Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up An LDAP / Windows Users Be Able To Log In To Their Machines Using Domain Controller?

Im an IT manager for a small company with a small ammount of users. We already use linux for our data server and I would like to implement a domain controller. All of our user machines are WIndows XP pro.
Ive been reading up on using OpenLDAP as an alternative to active directory.
What I want is just a simple active directory like server, with a GUI if possible.
What do I need to look at and how would I go about setting this up? Im fairly proficient with Ubuntu already, I just need to be pointed in the right direction.
Is it even possible to have my windows users be able to log in to their machines using an ubuntu domain controller?
First of all I am new user on fedora forum and I love Linux (special Redhat flavours) and want to replace windows into Linux Everywhere. I am having some issue in configuring PDC on Fedora,I want to replace my company Windows Domain controller and file server into fedora file and PDC, I tried from web and through 389-directory server but didn't succeed even once, how to configure PDC with Samba 4 + 389-directory Server, I have heard samba 4 is having awesome support and its better then windows DC, configuring Complete PDC. (Whatever need to configure PDC i.e. DNS, SAMBA 4, SWAT, WEBMIN, 389-Directory Server, Windows sync,).
I am looking for a way to deploy Linux in the same manner as a MS network. I want my desktop clients to authenticate against a DC, but Im not sure what would take the place of a Domain Controller in Linux. In addition, I am not sure if I could be able to manage user rights via a central server.
I have read about Samba as a domain controller, but Im not sure if that is what I want. In addition, I have read about LDAP, but again Im not sure if that is what I need to use. When I researched RADIUS servers, I was even more confused.
I'm working for a smallish non-profit that has gone through some recent growing pains. We have two sites that are currently without a domain controller, and no money for MS licenses, so I was thinking of trying to add a couple of additional Linux machines (we already run Linux for web services internally, and I've set up a test case previously to see if I could get a server to join the domain, which was a success) and was trying to find out if I can get them to act as Domain Controllers without replacing the domain. The main issue that I'm having at those locations is drive mappings are not happening correctly against our DFS file servers. The one other location that had this issue had it go away when we added a local DC. The domain is a Server 2008 domain.
I have setup Ubuntu servers as LAMP machines but that's pretty much it.
I need to work on an existing CentOS server that I will see for the first time tomorrow. I am told that, as of right now, it is "just serving the internet." The goal is to set it up to be a primary domain controller by which I mean:
1) A user should be able to login to the server from any of the workstations and then see their server stored documents
2) The clients will be a mixed bag of Linux, Windows and Mac machines
I could use a push in the right direction as to what I need to do to get this all setup. I know how to setup users and home folders (I use webmin typically and I understand that there is a version for CentOS) but clearly there is more that I need to do. I am really curious as to how I would map the necessary drives on the client machines upon login and have the users have automatic access to their data regardless of the client machine they log in to.
I am using Unbunto desktop and installed "likewise open" so that my linux client can access windows active directory(join the domain). On server side i have windows 2003 server. On windows 2003 server in active directory i have assigned each user a disk space. I have sucessfully joined linux (ubunto) box to the active directory domain but my linux box has access ($ it can use) to all other user diskpace ( they can browse other users) and when i joined windows xp client with the same server it works properly( xp client cant access or use other diskpace)
Filter access server through the net only to authenticated users from domain controller (Win2k). I wish to promote a "normal" installation of Suse as a domain controller with LDAP so the other computers in my network need to use a centralised username and password to log onto the machines.The only documentation I can find refers back to suse 9.
I've got a home server running Ubuntu Server 9.04 and several machines running Ubuntu Desktop (9.04 and 8.04) and Windows (XP, Vista and 7). Now what I want to do is to create a domain and directory server similar in function to Windows Server w/ AD and join my other machines to the domain, but am not sure where to start. I was just curious how Ubuntu interacts with domain users when on the windows domain. For example, if we have an Ubuntu machine on the Windows domain with a local user "administrator" and that's it, would any domain users be able to log into the Ubuntu work station, similar to how it is on Windows?
My Windows 2003 domain has three domain controllers. All of them are configured as global catalog servers, but my krb.conf and krb5.conf only contain a reference to one of them. What if the DC referenced is down? Should my files reference the other DCs? The contents of my files follow...
I have 15 or so debian lenny machines, and a xen server that I would like to join to the windows 2003 AD domain controller. The main goal is I would like the windows / linux user names and passwords to be the same on each system. Only 10 or so users need access to the machines but the passwords sometimes are different. How should I go about accomplishing this ?
I was told that openldap may be a solution. But from what I've read about it sounds like its just a mimic or window AD and doesnt sync with it, at least natively ?

i need to configure Redhat Linux as Domain Controller in my organisation, whee all of my clients PC's will be Windows XP or Windows 7 ( where i can login through Domain users ). what exactly i need to configure in Redhat Linux, i heard Configuring Samba as PDC is quite enough ? is that right ? then what is Open LDAP ? should i need to Configure Open LDAP also ?
I have Ubuntu 10.04.2 (Linux 2.6.32-33-server on x86_64) with OpenLDAP 2.4.21 and Webmin1.550. I converted my ldap database from another system with the older style schema (OpenLDAP 2.3.3 with slightly older Webmin version 1.480) and no longer use slapd.conf, but the newer slapd.d format.
It all works fine except for one thing. When I add a new user, it lets me type in the additional LDAP fields:
But when I click the Create button, all the fields get jumbled together in the Title/Position box with a diamond question mark delimiting the fields:
Modifying existing users (which have the Additional fields displaying correctly) also has the same result - it moves the fields all into the one Title/Position box with the diamond shapes with question marks inside between each entry. Is it a problem with my schema files? I tried reverting to the older shema files and slapd.conf and it still did the same thing on the new system. I am really at a loss.

Previously added users that show the fields properly have "description:" and then the field listed for each Additional LDAP field. Also shouldn't the "title" be visible in plain human readable text here? - it looks like it encrypted it somehow - similar to a password hash. The older system works fine and the fields are all readable and in their proper locations. But the new system just doesn't work right.
I installed and configured LDAP server and client on RHEL5 successfully. Problem is that when I add more than one user on server and clients, It shows error 'invalid user'.When I run the command:-#chown -R user:users /home/user, It shows error 'invalid user'. by step for adding and modifying more users in ldap servers.
how to export normal unix user to ldap I've unbuntu ldap server with some local users. I want to export all my local users to ldap database as a ldap users. Or if there is any configuration so that when ever a normal user is created then automatically an ldap user with the same name as the normal user will be created
I have server 9.04 and joined thru winbind to Windows Domain and subversion installed.Windows AD users can use their own credentials to join and everything is working fine.However the group svn which is used to access the repos in /etc/groups has some users.However I would like to add the domain users group to the svn group but the domain users contains Space. And /etc/groups does not happend to read the space any ideas on how to add "domain users" to the svn group in /etc/groups
I have created a mail server using citadel that seems to be working nicely. My only problem is the only way to access the server is to go to 126.96.36.199:2000 (it's running on port 2000). I have Ubuntu server 10.04 joined to a domain using Likewise Open. I can login using my domain credentials and have added my domain account to the sudoers file. Now that I've got it joined to the domain I want to add some samba shares and have domain members use their accounts to access them. However, no matter what combination of my domain name and the domain user or group I use in the valid users field it won't let me in. What's the proper way of inputting a domain user or group in the valid user field?

I am looking for ideas for getting windows users into an ldap server. I am currently running a Linux server for my department and need to create an LDAP server which mirrors the username/password information for all of us as they are stored in the windows server here. I have the openldap server up and running on Ubuntu 8.04 and it works great; I now need to find some way to import user info into this from windows. I've seen discussions of using ldifde.exe to export the AD users into an ldif file. Is this the simplest way to go about it?
Our Linux server is currently providing us with much needed services using apache, and apache is authenticating using LDAP to our windows server (Using our windows username / password is required functionality). This windows server has some problem which causes it to delay for inordinate amounts of time between authentication requests and responses. The situation is such that this problem will not be addressed by IT staff. However, I have control over the Linux server so I am looking to just mirror the windows server on an LDAP server of my own. I could get away with updating the passwords in the Linux server.
If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.
