Ubuntu Servers :: Set Up The Route Table?

Sep 17, 2010

There are two connections in my Ubuntu server: eth0 is a normal interface and, eth1 is configured with an static IP, and has an domain name with that IP. But this connection is charged by bytes, very expensive.

how to set up the route table so that: everyone can access my server with the domain name, and let the traffic goes from eth0 as much as possible(I have a proxy service on my server. At least, let the proxy traffic goes from eth0)?

Networking :: Incomplete Route Table: Centos5.5 / 64 On ESX

Feb 10, 2010

Going haywire on a new Centos 5.4 64bit install on vmware esx 4. I should know, but my mind is obviously fucked up today. I get the "distination unreachable", indicating something ICMP related, checked network setup, all looks like usual. Except my routing table lacks the and def. gw entries, as in this working box example: U 0 0 0 eth0 U 0 0 0 lo UG 0 0 0 eth0

FWIW, during install, did the usual basic firewall steps, not'n extra added but SSH. Tried with/without iptables, no change; no wonder given the lacky routing table. Sure, I can add what's missing, but I'd like to know why it's missing; i.e. what I missed on basic setup, as I'm going to repeat this with a nof Centos/RHEL installations (replacing SLES).

Fedora Networking :: Route Table Change Disconnects From Secure Connection

Oct 21, 2010

I use a secure connection to reach company network from outside. There's a client application "Juniper network", which creates the secured tunnel to a company network. However, the connection never survives more than 8 seconds, when it goes disconnected with the message "Route monitor alarm". From my recent search for a solution I've found that this error is caused by a change in a route table, which violates a connection policy.

"This disconnect is typically triggered by a change in the routing table of the client machine, the change is such that the split tunnel policies defined by the administrator will be violated" - from [URL]

This is how a routing table looks before, during and after the connection attempt:

[vs@dilbert network-scripts]$ route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface * UH 0 0 0 ppp0
xxx.xxx.xxx.0 UGH 0 0 0 ppp0

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Make The Server Route Between

Nov 9, 2010

For the last couple of days I've been building on a server built from an old (well, not too old) computer. My goal is to use it for multiple purposes like a webserver, home automation, and possibly a future media center (if I get my TV card to work). But perhaps the main reason is to get wireless access to the internet for my laptop, and to connect it to my other (stationary) computer. When I'm done I'm also planning on writing a guide for setting up an access point with the rt61 chipset, as there seems to be many people looking for this. First I just need to get through this problem though .

For this I use two wired NICs, eth0 for the local interface to my computer, and eth1 as an external interface for the internet. Moreover I use a wireless NIC (DWL-G510 using the rt61pci driver) in conjunction with the daemon hostapd to provide a wireless interface for portable computers to connect to. eth1 gets its IP through DHCP from my ISP, while eth0 and wlan0 have static IPs on two different subnets like this (copied from /etc/network/interfaces):

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Route SMTP Port 25 Through VPN

Nov 13, 2010

I have a server set up with a VPN (openVPN with DynDNS). My emails are located there and I can check them from home, office, where ever really, with different computers, no problem. However, due to restrictions of some ISPs I would have to change the SMTP server used, depending on where I am with my laptop.

Now, I thought about using the VPN to also tunnel the SMTP traffic through that. But how am I doing that?So far, when I'm connected to via VPN I simply have a local (from the server point of view) IP address to connect to my IMAP server. But how can I route the SMTP port 25 through the VPN?Is that possible to do, also in a way that I don't have to change anything depending on where I am, as in within the network of the server or outside? Since when I'm within the network the VPN obviously isn't connecting..

Ubuntu Servers :: Route Command - How To Get Internet To Clients

Apr 24, 2010

I do not understand this command well. Yes, I have looked at man route and that whilst that gives lots of information about the switches I cannot see it in context. I have a server with two nics. One to the Internet (eth1) and one to the lan (eth0). I use pppoe and when it is running I get a virtual adapter appear in ifconfic called ppp0 which shows the public DNS and ISP session IP. I entered the command:
route add -host (gateway IP) dev eth1
and get the Internet to appear on the server. However, I do not get the Internet to the clients. I have turned off the firewall to be sure that this is not the problem.

Ubuntu Servers :: HOW TO Be In Two Places At Once A.k.a Ipredator Independent Of The Default Route

May 4, 2010

I have a home server running Lucid which basically runs our home lan, but I also wanted to be able to run transmission-daemon over an ipredator VPN connection completely independently of the ethernet port (as far as the application layer is concerned anyway). Most of the howtos for setting up VPN use the VPN as the default route, however I still wanted to run a webserver, dnsmasq etc, not to mention free bandwidth access to my ISP etc.

Thus, this howto. The ppp connection still tunnels through eth0, but as far everthing else is concerned my server has two independent network ports eth0 and ppp0 and applications use the default route via eth0 to our router unless explicitely directed down pppX. I assume that you already have transmission-daemon installed.

Networking :: Route Eth2 TCP Packets To Tun0 With IPTABLES And IP RULE/ROUTE?

May 8, 2011

I have 3 network interfaces on my Linux Router :

Interface - Gateway - Type

br0 - - Internet
eth2 - - LAN
tun0 - - VPN (via br0)

What I'd like to do is to route all TCP packets coming from eth2 to tun0 where a VPN client is running on If I delete all default routes and if I add a new route to tun0 like :

route del default
route add default gw

Everything is fine, and everyone on eth2 can reach the Internet using the VPN access. Now the problem is that my VPN client does not allow any other protocols other than TCP. And I also want to allow VPN access only to eth2, no other LAN nor the router itself. use iptables to filter any TCP packets and mark them, so they can be sent to tun0, while any other packets can reach the Internet via br0 ( I found on the Internet that we can mark packets before they get routed. Using the following commands :

iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -j MARK --set-mark 85 -i eth2 -p tcp --dport 80
ip route add table 300 default via dev tun0
ip rule add fwmark 0x55 table 300

First of all, --dport 80 never work... :/ I wanted to filter TCP 80 packets coming from eth2, but none of them seems to be HTTP packets... oO (very strange...). Nevermind, I decided to forget about the --dport option. I use the "iptables -L -v -t mangle" command to see how many packets are marked, and it is working fine, all TCP packets coming from eth2 are marked. Now the problem is that none of them are routed to tun0 they are all respecting the "route -n" rules... and not the "table 300" rule I have created.

Ubuntu Servers :: Program/Process Route To Specific Network Device?

For example, I wish for irssi to route through eth0 and w3m to route through eth1. Keep in mind these devices have dynamic IPs, so I cannot attached them to an IP.

The solution cannot be accomplished through route since route pivots on IPs not devices.

Ubuntu Servers :: 9.10 - Routing Table Getting Corrupted

Jul 25, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server installation which have been working flawlessly for some months. The server runs bridged networking, because of some VMs that runs on it. But, a couple of weeks ago the network connectivity have started to disappear now and then (usually once a day or so). Running "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" always kicks it back to life.

After a bit of debugging I noticed that when OK the routing table looked like this:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface * U 0 0 0 br0 * U 0 0 0 virbr0
default UG 100 0 0 br0

While when in the non-working state it looked like this:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface * U 0 0 0 br0 * U 0 0 0 eth0 * U 0 0 0 virbr0
default UG 100 0 0 eth0
default UG 100 0 0 br0

Deleting the two routes to eth0 restores the networking again. Why these "erronous" routes gets added, and what adds them? How to further debug this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Trying To Insert JPG File Into MySQL Table

Mar 12, 2011

I would like to store JPG files in a mysql database table. I figured that using BLOB fields on the one hand and the 'load_file' command on the other would do the trick. Here is how I set up the table:

mysql> create table blobtable (id int(10) not null auto_increment,
fileName varchar(15) not null,
file longblob not null, primary key(id) );
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.51 sec)

Then I tried to enter the data:
mysql> insert into blobtable(filename,file)values('pic',load_file('/var/www/temp/IMGP4764.JPG'));

Which got me the following error signal:
ERROR 1048 (23000): Column 'file' cannot be null

It seems to me that the file path to the JPG file (although correct) is the source of the problem, and is causing the load_file command not to work. My first attempt was with the JPG file in my PC's home directory. When that returned the same error message, I figured that maybe the file had to be in the PC's (server's) web area so I put it under the 'www' directory.

Ubuntu Servers :: Raid5 Repair Partition Table - Recognized Too Late

Feb 27, 2011

I opened GParted to create a new partition on a new drive. He wanted me to create a partition table first which I did, and it was created directly without any prompt like im used to see when creating partition. So I recognized too late, that i actually created a MBR on one of my 6 1TB raid5 drives. Not beeing sure if the ne MBR was really written, I have opened ubuntu disk utility and clicked on the check raid button. It directly made a resync. After the resync, mdadm --detail /dev/md0 told me everything is ok and synced. Then I wanted to mount it with:

mount /dev/md0 /mnt Then I get the following error: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so" I think I just killed my raid5 ;(

I shouldnt work on my server when im tired and when I actually have no time ;( My last hope is the fact, that "Disk Utility" shows that there is a .0 TB ext4 volume on my raid (see screen below) [URL]

Ubuntu Networking :: Error - "route: Netmask Does Not Match Route Address"

Jan 25, 2011

Having trouble getting my Netgear WNA1000 working thru wireless router. Have tried lots of suggestions from other threads to no avail. Someone suggested that th routing table isn't set correctly, so have been trying to use the follwing to make the proper entry in the routing table: sudo route add -net netmask dev wlan0

Result: error message stating with:
"route: netmask does not match route address"

followed by "Usage" instructions which tell me to do what I just did. Any ideas on how I can populate my routing table with correct entry for my wireless card? Not to complicate matters, but I temporarily turned off encryption on my router to eliminate that as a possibility until I get connected. So maybe it'still trying to connect via encrypted mode - do I need to turn off encryption on my (client) end?
