Ubuntu Servers :: List Options Available For Server Redundancy?

Jan 20, 2010

Can list options available for server redundancy? (i.e. fault tolerance methods so that if a server goes down another server can take over). Also is it possible to implement RAID1/disk mirroring across servers?

Ubuntu Servers :: Mount Does Not List CIFS Mount Options On 10.04.2 LTS?

Apr 4, 2011

Linux box info: root@mytestbox:~# uname -a Linux mytestbox 2.6.32-30-generic-pae #59-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 1 23:01:33 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

Windows box info: Windows Server 2008 SP2 Enterprise I've verified via --verbose output that mount.cifs is indeed processing the passed on options.

root@mytestbox:~# mount -t cifs //10.1.1.10/Test /root/testwin --verbose -o credentials=/root/testcreds,rw,nocase,noperm,noacl,nounix,noserverin o,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777

[Code]...

Yet, when I type mount all it reports is (rw,mand). The share works just fine, and I can see the masking (all files are showing as rwxrwxrwx as expected etc) but mount is not listing the options?!

Is this normal expected behavior? Is there a bug report on this? I've google'd to the best of my capabilities and could not locate any such information which is why I decided to hit the forums prior to filing a bug.

Red Hat :: Geographical Redundancy - Software - In Order To Have The Four Servers Running Active

Mar 24, 2010

I have four Red Hat 5 servers located in two different geographical sites. they are working active/active on each site.

Is there any software that I can use in order to have the four servers running Active/Active Active/Active in the same time, and if one site has been destroyed the other two servers in the other site handle the traffic?

Basically the traffic is a Web traffic.

Server :: Redundancy On Nic - Switch ?

Apr 17, 2010

Evening, had a switch outage today, what a PITA. ok, that's behind me, my next project is to have the least amount of single point of failures.

So the current scenario is the following; ISP -> linux firewall -> 3 network subnets.
1. load balanced network
2. public servers (ftp, etc.)
3. management network

I would like to change it to be more like; ISP -> switch, 2 patch cords to 2 seperate firewalls (right now using a basic linux box with iptables, works great), might go the endian or other route with failover. But, each server has a public IP and private 192.x ip, most server have 2 adapters 2 interfaces each, so I do have 4 ports already. I would like to send 1nic with public/private to switch1, the other to switch 2 but either keep them down, or better the same IP. So I guess, is this possible? I would say the word bonding, not sure if it can be used in this term. The webserver are running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, DB's etc are mostly CentOS 5.4 box's.

We have all dell hardware, switches, etc. but I don't know in my years, can you have 2 seperate adapters share an IP for fault tollerance, or would I have to down/up each of the nic's in the event of a switch failure.

Fedora Servers :: DHCP Server - Custom Options Not Working

I am trying to get custom options to work.

This is my Dhcpd.conf file

This shows that I have 3 custom option in RED.

Now when I try to pull an Ip from the 96.63.0.0/24 subnet I do not see the options in the DHCPACK from the server. The client gets an IP 96.63.0.12 but no options are present in the DHCPACK or any other DHCP transaction. I have confirmed this trhough tcpdumps on the server and client.

The server version I am using is:

The version of the DHCP server is :

Server :: Deadlock In NFS4 / Shared Servers Suddenly Stop Responding And Cant List It From Debian 5 Server?

Jan 4, 2010

I am connecting servers using NFS4 the shared directories are on servers running Debian 4 while the one who read from them is Debian 5.0.3. The problem is one of these shared servers suddenly stop responding and you cannot list it from Debian 5 server, also df hang, and the web application that is using it does not respond to requests that use this shared directory since it is blocked. Then the load on the server start to increase until the server cannot respond (over 90). I have found many entries in the syslog that refer to this like:

ma25555 kernel: [1200285.732919] nfs: server 10.xxx.xxx.xxx not responding, still trying
Dec 31 08:16:33 ma25555 kernel: [1200289.815378] INFO: task java:9702 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Dec 31 08:16:33 ma25555 kernel: [1200289.835249] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
code....

I have tried the connection between the 2 servers using ping for one day and all are OK (zero lost)

There are 3 other servers that are running Debian 4 and are working fine.

OpenSUSE Network :: Samba - Use The "read List" And "write List" Options With Groups Under Share

Apr 27, 2010

I have a Samba server running in my Lan (mainly for file and print service). This server will act as a PDC (don't ask why...). I have a question: Under a share I can use the "read list" and "write list" options with groups (eg @users). Is that group a Linux or Samba group? If it's the later, am I forced to use the net groupmap command, or it is sufficient to have a group name in the /etc/group file? Should I add samba/linux users to that group (with net rpc) or is sufficient to have the group membership set in the linux?

Ubuntu Installation :: No List Of OS Options On Dual Boot?

Jun 28, 2011

I just installed a dual boot win7-Ubuntu 11.04. When I reboot, there is no list of OS options displayed, it just boots to windows. Below are the details of how I got to this point.I Used GParted to delete all partitions off a hardard drive. Then installed win7 from CD. Win7 works fine. Then I formated an ext4 partion and installed Ubuntu 11.04 from the iso CD. But on reboot I don't see a list of OS options. When I boot from the Ubuntu 11.04 CD, I can view the usual Unix directories in the hard drive Ubuntu root (bin, etc, lib, usr, var) and the /boot/grub directory. So Ubuntu looks like it got installed. What else can I trouble shoot to get the list of OS options displayed?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Grub Is Corrupted - Does Not Display The List Of Of Bootable OS Options Anymore

Nov 28, 2010

I have a PC with three partitions: C, D, E. The C: and D: partition are NTFS and C: has Windows XP on it. D: holds my data files and folders in the Windows environment. E: has CentOS version 5.x. The machine is dual bootable. When booting up Grub gave me the options to boot to CentOS (by default) or to boot into Win XP (by selecting it).

Recently I used Partition Magic to resize the D: partition. I shrank the D: partition. The freed space space was then used to create a new NTFS partition.

After the partitioning was completed, I rebooted the machine. But now Grub is having a problem. It does not display the list of of bootable OS options any more. Instead there is just a black screen with the prompt:

grub>

What am I supposed to do here?

I am afraid that after I ran Partition Magic somehow Grub is messed up. How do I recover the previous boot options? Or at the minimum, how do I make the the machine to boot into Windows XP?

Ubuntu :: Redundancy The Ssd On Hdd?

Jun 16, 2011

I bought a brand new PC with 2 hard disk: a solid state 250gb and a 500gb sata drive. On the first one, I installed Ubuntu LTS 10.04.2.
My question is: how can I make the redundancy of the boot partition and / on the sata disk? I thought to clone the internal hard disk and then run a rsync before every shutdown. But the PC doesn't always boot from the ssd and change the boot sequence from the bios has no effect. I had also considered the idea of a raid 1 with mdadm, but it seems to worsen the performance.

Ubuntu Servers :: Options For A Larger File System?

Apr 27, 2011

I have considered a range of choices, but at the end of the day the choice I make can quite easily put into a situation that requires even more thinking.

The idea is to have an enormous file system for SAMBA that can scale from terabytes to petabytes. Such as a single directory with say 4 million MP3s in my iTunes collection. iTunes cannot use multiple drives easily.

There are lots of vendors that have offerings galore, I wanted to see what can be done with a roll your own approach.

Software :: Data Redundancy And Failover ?

Jan 3, 2010

The only issue that I have with doing this is that if the server happens to fail due to hardware problems, I am going to have a major issue. I wanted to set up a two node cluster so in the event of something happening to one of the servers, it will automatic failover to the next.

With so many ways to cluster servers, does anyone have any suggestions on the way to perform my needed task. The OS for Xen will be Red Hat and the VMs will have many versions of linux. Some of the VMs will have mysql, apache, dns, and postfix running.

We're moving some systems to autofs5 and I can't for the life of me figure out how to pass these options properly. There's no 'localoptions' in the init script anymore as there was for autofs4. I've tried adding the flags to the OPTIONS variable in /etc/default/autofs. That adds them to the global autofs process but then nothing in the automounter mounts.

Fedora Installation :: Using The F10 Live CD To Setup Software RAID 1 Between 1 Hard Drives For Redundancy & Fstab

Apr 15, 2009

I have been battering with FC10 and software RAID for a while now, and hopefully I will have a full working system soon. Basically, I tried using the F10 live CD to setup Software RAID 1 between 1 hard drives for redundancy (I know its not hardware raid but budget is tight) with the following table;

[Code]....

I set these up by using the RAID button on the partition section of the install except swap, which I set-up using the New partition button, created 1 swap partition on each hard drive that didn't take part in RAID. Almost every time I tried to do this install, it halted due to an error with one of the raid partitions and exited the installer. I actually managed it once, in about...ooo 10-15 times of trying but I broke it. After getting very frustrated I decided to build it using just 3 partitions

[Code]....

I left the rest un-touched. This worked fine after completing the install and setting up grub, reboot in to the install. I then installed gparted and cut the drive up further to finish my table on both hard drives. I then used mdadm --create...etc to create my RAID partitions. So I now have
