Ubuntu Servers :: View A Physical Terminal On A Remote Screen?

Nov 9, 2010

how to get the terminal displayed on my serverbox to show up in a terminal on my laptop. I have a minecraft server running on ubuntu server edition 10.04 on a headless server. I also have a monitor, but it's a big bulky CRT and my girlfriend doesn't like having a huge amount of stuff tucked behind our chair where the router is (wifi wasn't working right, nor is it stable).

Essentially, when I ssh into the box, it creates a new terminal for me to input things on. That's nice when I need to edit stuff in the background, but when I want to input commands on the server directly, there's no real way to do that without blindly typing on my keyboard on the box itself. Not to mention, I can't see anything if something goes wrong. A friend of mine mentioned the 'screen' command, and that sort of works I guess, but it still doesn't show the minecraft server output, nor let me input.

tl:dr;

is there a way to get a physical terminal output to display on a remote ssh terminal screen?

Ubuntu :: Can't Turn On Terminal Bell In Gnome-terminal Using Remote Screen Session With Irssi

Nov 6, 2010

I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.

My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.

My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.

I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc

And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.

No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.

I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Setting Physical Screen Controls On 2 Monitors

Jun 20, 2011

I use 2 screens. The one that is giving me problems is 5:4 1280*1024, 60Hz monitor. These settings have been automatically detected and do match the manual's screen settings. The mouse disappears off the top of the screen and yet when a window is expanded to full screen it stops at the physical edge of the screen. The mouse stops at the bottom and left side of the screen (the other screen is on its right)

Messages that a new email has arrived are mostly hidden above the edge of the screen. I have tried the physical screen controls but they do not allow me to change the size of the screen, as I am running the monitor in digital mode. I am using the nouveau drivers. What can I do to bring the boundary down to the physical edge of the top of the flat screen?

Ubuntu Installation :: No Terminal View After Update To 11.04?

May 3, 2011

After the update to 11.04 I don't see the non-graphical terminal view any more. I run a fully encrypted system that requires password entry after the grub boot option selection. I can blindly type in my password and the system boots fine into the KDE logon screen. However, I can't see any terminal output when I use ALT-F1 to go to the non-graphical shell. It is there though, because I can blindly type in my login info and run commands from this "hidden" shell.

how I can get back my non-graphical display?

When I boot the old kernel, everything works as expected. No strange black screen but the usual text console.

I've setup a second wireless router, dedicated to the MAC address of my laptop (debian) and using ssh I can view my email (thunderbird), but I'm not sure what to do to view woodworking videos without downloading. So, do I need to setup tunneling, do I need to view the windowmanager or is there an way to run videos? Anyway I've come along way using HOWTo's with breaking debian. Not sure how to proceed.

Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.

Debian Multimedia :: Graphical Application To View Logs On Remote System

Jan 16, 2015

I have a web server that hosts multiple websites. Am looking for an application that can be run on my workstation and makes it possible to watch Apache logs live.

It should have a tabbed interface. When I launch the application, it has to connect to my server and should automatically open all access.log and error.log files and display all changes in real time (similar to tail -f command).

Does anything like this exist?

I'm tired of logging in many times in Konsole and executing tail -f commands to see parallel logs.

General :: Launch A Terminal By Clicking On The Terminal Icon At The Top Of The Screen

I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.

1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2

I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.

General :: Terminal Proxy Or Screen Without Terminal Emulation?

May 26, 2010

How can I make terminal applications immune to terminal emulator close, but still able to use all virtual terminal features?

egin{UPDATE}I want my terminal application remain alive and accessible if I accidentally close terminal emulator. This functionality is provided by screen and tmux, but they have issues with colors and they flush screen.Yes,I can run the shell inside screen, but I do not want the shell remain alive unless there is some other program running.

end{UPDATE}I see this must be something like screen, but without VT100 terminal emulation, something which will just apply whatever application does with "terminal proxy"'s terminal (like outputting something to stdout/stderr or using stty to set terminal options) to the terminal this proxy runs in.

// I know about screen and altscreen on, but it makes either this (screen with TERM=screen):

or this (screen with TERM=rxvt-unicode):

while I want this (rxvt-unicode without screen):

I have figured out that everything looks fine if I compile rxvt-unicode with USE=-xterm-color (in fact vim looks like on the second picture even without screen if I add this USE flag) and set TERM=screen-256color, but I do not like this workaround because it actually changes colors and I can't be sure that it will always change them only this way:

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't View Samba Shares?

Jul 23, 2011

I have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS I have installed Boxee on it that is all and I am trying to set it up as a Samba Server. I have followed the instructions on following page:[URL]..On the box that I am trying to setup as a Samba Server using Nautilus I can view the shares no problem. On another Ubuntu box no such luck. I can get too Windows Network and I can see my workgroup. When I try and open the workgroup I get the following dialogue box for some time: Opening "WORKGROUP". You can stop this operation by clicking cancel. And then this error dialogue box:

Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server I have spent sometime trying to resolve this myself but have had little luck. As far as I know I have no firewalls in place; Ubuntu does not have one by default is that correct? At this time I don't have a Windows computer to try to connect too the server at this time, but plan to in the future that is why I want to use Samba.

I am connecting the two boxes with an D-Link DIR-825 router; both boxes are on the same subnet. Are there settings in the router that could be affecting this?
