View 3 RepliesI have a problem with my wifi adhoc network which I previously had under Windows. I go to network connections, edit connection ,wireless, add then change to adhoc then I cannot press the add button as it is not highlighted, I don't want any security so have not enterd any WEP or WPA information, also How do I do a scan for wireless networks/devices in my area?
I have a number of devices plus the chap next door who connects to my wired internet connection using my wifi adhoc network that are unable to do so at present.
Not for illegal purposes of course, it's just my computing teacher bet me that I couldn't obtain the schools wireless key without actually asking someone for it. Now I am an idiot and can't get anything like airsnort etc to work. So I was wondering if there is a nice simple"click here then click here then done" GUI I could use. O btw the encoding is WEP.

View 2 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago I decided to install Ubuntu and try it. I was really exited about running Ubuntu in my computer. I was all fired up about the new software I installed. I found that I needed an internet connection to get additional software.
So my first task was to get an internet connection, I did a lot of research about this subject and I encounter small but a lot of difficulties.
I was trying with an internal modem in my computer and with a WiFi antenna with no success.
I don't want to give up, at least not yet, I hope that someone in this forum can lead me to get a successful internet connection.
The equipment I am using is as follows:
Computer Compaq
Internal modem
WiFi driver in tar.bz2 format.
This is the WiFi description: External Antenna USB WiFi Wireless IEEE 802.11G/B WLAN 54Mbps Network Adapter USB2.0 Wireless Lan USB Adapter for Laptop Noteook Desktop PC Suport Vista/Windows 7(32bit & 64bit)/Linux.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my Dell studio 1557 with a broadcom 1394 wireless card.
I am wondering if it is possible to set my laptop to autojoin open wireless networks. I like traveling and it popped into my head. I am a novice linux user, long time windows user. I know its possible just how. like a terminal script or just a check mark somewhere. i broke my right hand and arm in a motorcycle wreck recently.
I have installed network controller driver(iwlwifi) in debian jessie and connected to wifi, but I could not connect to any web sites. I installed network-tools and input "iwconfig" it did show a wlan0 there.
Then I opened resolv.conf ,but there were 2 resolv.conf in my /etc,one contains "search lan nameserver 192.168.199.1",one contains "nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4".
I changed the content of the first one to 8.8.8.8 and restart networking, but I still could not open pages with wireless network.
And I open the first one again, and it changed back to 192.168.199.1,and an extra line "domain lan"above the line"search lan".
I'm travelling currently so the last network i connected successfully to was my home wpa-psk network. I hadn't tried anything until i got to my accommodation that is an open network (that I'm on now on the Win7 partition on my laptop).
The network (and a similar archetypical 'linksys' open network, aswell as some protected local networks are correctly displayed in network-manager and upon selection, it happily spins around to its hearts content for a while before saying 'no chance boy'.
/var/log/syslog spills out the usual combination of wpa_supplicant and kernel messages, the most interesting of are that the kernel deauthentication reason 6 response. 6 apparently means class2FrameFromNonAuthStation...Client attempted to transfer data before it was authenticated.
Anyone seen anything like this? I've already tried going closer to the router to no avail. I don't remember seeing this any other time I've connected to a open AP, even if that AP is far away. (Signal strength for this AP is good, kismet says its around -57dBm, well above the threshold of -80dBm, and I've tried all the suggestions from the 'Related Questions' code...
I have no problem with my wireless network at home, or visiting friends, but it won't connect to public, open, unsecured WiFi networks, eg hotels, trains, ships.I'm using Ubuntu v9.10, NetworkManager applet v0.7.996, on a Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop. If I left click on the NetworkManager, the available wireless networks are displayed and I can see the relevent open networks, named as expected and shown without the lock icon. I click on the relevent entry, watch a spinner for 30 seconds or so and then it drops off and I have no connection. This happens for "all" open connections. If I look at my defined Wireless Network Connections now, I can see, eg, "Auto Internet@Sea, Last used: never". Editing that connection:

I have to setup a WiFi network for a hotel. There are several possibilities, but for me the best one is to setup a open Wifi network with web authentication for single user. What is the best solution in terms of compatibility, security, reliability, etc? I don't know many solution for web authentication, only the RADIUS project.

I am trying to set up a wireless 'test' box to use on a private club (11,000 acres). The initial tests won't need anything fancy, it will just be checking the visibility of a hotspot from a high-point in the middle of the property. But if it proves to have good visibility, later tests will be (hopefully) promoted by the club and made aware to members. I would like to set up a captive portal to redirect them to a comments page where they can post a quick message if they were able to connect ....
Most of the examples I see online of captive portal are based on having an internet connection and/or a NAT scheme set up. I just need a hotspot and a single web-page for these promotional tests. If possible, I would like to trigger any devices capable to suggest or otherwise open a browser to go to the promotional landing page ...
Also, one more quick question, this is to eventually be an 'open' internet for this test - most of the wpa set-up examples show using a passkey. Is making an open wifi as simple as not including the passkey or is there something else I would need to be doing?
My laptop has an internal wireless device and a button to turn it on/off, but since it has bad reception I use an external USB wireless adapter. The problem is that if I turn the internal wireless device off using the button, it also turns the USB wireless adapter off.Is there anyway to use the killswitch (the button) only for the internal wireless device? This only started to happen in Ubuntu 10.04.

I have a pc which has 2 network cards, 1 wifi and 1 ethernet card.
I'm using wifi card to connect to wifi network (internet) and i'm planing to share this wifi/internet connection via ethernet to wireless router (siemens sx763) so i can have internet on my other devices, e.g. mobile phone, laptop.
I was wondering if there's any way for a laptop to be both simultaneously connected to a wireless network, while at the same time acting as an ad-hoc network with local access to serve as a wifi connection for my mobile device, which would be ssh-ing into the laptop and using local resources.

I have an old PowerBook G4 that I would like to use as a 'dummy' computer for learning wireless penetration (WEP/WPA attacks) more effectively. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

I recently got a nice, lightly used IBM Thinkpad laptop. It has wireless capability for the Internet. Linux is the only OS in the laptop. At home, I don't have wireless-- I have a wired DSL connection for my laptop and for my IBM desktop (which also only has Linux as OS).
When I took the laptop to the public library, wireless is provided there for free and I had no trouble connecting to the system there. But since I'm new to wireless, what do I need to have installed to have a secure laptop when in the public library (or when I'm anywhere else that offers free wifi) using the wireless connection? [I use Firestarter as my firewall in the laptop and in the desktop.] Do I have to install some software to make sure my laptop is secured from spying and invasions when in the library or is the Firestarter enough? If Firestarter is not enough, what is that wifi security software by name?
[My OS is MEPIS 8.5, a Debian-based distro.]
I have installed Xubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) on a PC at my uncle's. He is the happy owner of a Netgear wg121 wireless usb-adapter.
I have followed the instructions concerning installation of the ndiswrapper here:
[URL]
The wg is up and running and everything seems to work perfect... except that, when I reeboot and log in, I have to issue the following commands again, to make the network initialize the wep-encrypted connection. If I do not issue these commands, the wifi-part of the Xubuntu network manager (I don't know the exact name of the program) is invisible in the menu or anywhere on the desktop. (It just says no network where the wifi should be appended). But when I issue these commands in a terminal, then the adapter (wg121) opens and connects to the network:
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
I have tried the command:
sudo ndiswrapper -m
in order to make Xubuntu connect automatically on opening, but no success. When i look through the log it says something about a .conf file, but not which and how, so I'm a bit lost.
I have a Synology home server at home. I have a laptop with Linux Mint 8 (Helena) installed. I can access my server's shared files using LAN through Places>Network>Windows Network>Workgroup>Server>Shared files. I can also access the files through a web browser. Samba is installed. The problem is when I use the wireless lan of my laptop, I cannot access the server and the files anymore locally even through a web browser.
I tried Connect to Server through Windows Share but what I get is "Could not display "smb://server/".".
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a 15' Dell Studio After doing an update my internal wireless will not connect to my wireless network. The card is on, I can see networks around me, but it will not connect to mine. It just acts like its connecting and then disconnects.
