Ubuntu Security :: Chromium Still At 10.0.648.133 - Hasn't Updated

Mar 27, 2011

There was a security update (to fix compromised HTTPS certificates) to Chromium on 17 March (10.0.648.151) but my Chromium still hasn't updated. Did Ubuntu drop the ball here or is this just affecting my box? I'm considering switching to Google Chrome--to get security updates promptly.

Ubuntu :: How Often Is Chromium Updated

Jan 8, 2011

i did some looking online and read that chrome/chromium will tell you if an update is available by showing a small orange dot by the settings wrench. i have never seen one. but it seems that (as far as i was able to figure out) i do have the latest version (8.0.552). i do remember seeing chromium having been updated through the Ubuntu update manger, but all i remember seeing are security fixes, not updates (although i might not have seen them). i also read that chrome/chromium has a 6 week release cycle. Its been awhile since ive seen chromium updated (unless update manger is doing it and not telling me). is there a newer version of chromium? or am i just too observant/impatient?

Is this Real or Fake? Just wondering if it is one of those fake spyware alerts, like from windows.

Ubuntu :: Chromium Security Page Overly Aggressive?

Oct 13, 2010

I connect to the internet through a password-protected network which stores my login for one day (basically every morning I get a redirect to a website that prompts for a username and password). The problem is that since my homepage is also 'https://' I get chromium's 'This is probably not the webpage you are looking for!' message. Quite simply, I want chromium to trust the login site enough that it will simply proceed to it without confirmation without applying this reduced security to other sites.

Ubuntu Installation :: Keeping Software Updated For Security Reasons?

Jan 7, 2010

I've recently built a VM appliance using Ubuntu 8.04 that is given to customers for an easy deployment of our software. Ubuntu works great in a VM and its perfect for our software (which is a web application).

Some customers are paranoid (rightfully so) and they will run a vulnerability assessment on the web application. A particular customers' assessment fails as it finds that the appliance isn't running the latest version the Apache web server. I thought that just running "apt-get upgrade" would upgrade all of the software packages to the latest so that failures in the assessment caused by outdated software packages would be resolved... However this is not the case...

I realize that there is a probably a whole process for submitting/approving the latest versions of software packages in Ubuntu, that then get pushed to the repositories - But how does this work? What exactly does "apt-get upgrade" do if it doesnt upgrade packages to the latest?

For example: I need Apache 2.2.11 to fix a particular vulnerability. But when running apt-get upgrade, it doesnt actually upgrade the Apache version number (or any of the other packages). I'm stuck on Apache 2.2.8, and I can't find a .DEB installer for 2.2.11 or later.

Security :: Why Rsync Updated Password Files

I synchronise my data disk to a backup disk daily. Yesterday I noticed that rsync listed in its output my password-managers directory, which contains an old Keepass database and other Windows password programs I used long ago. I haven't accessed this directory in ages, so I was wondering why rsync felt the need to list itthe directories it updated.Modification dates and last accessed dates are what I would expect; nothing recen

Ubuntu :: Chromium Application Shortcuts In Unity - Not Including Most Of Chromium's Toolbars

May 2, 2011

I often use the option in Chromium to create 'application shortcuts'. These are instances of Chromium that make a website look more like an app by not including most of Chromium's toolbars. I use it for gmail and google docs and spreadsheets and calendar. In 11.04 I have set up Desktop launchers and copied them across to the Launcher (what an odd way to add something to the launcher, why no right-click 'add launcher' option?)

The problem is that the launcher thinks all these apps are chromium (which they are really, but I would like them to be seen as separate apps). If I minimize my gmail window, a little triangle appears next to the chromium icon, not the gmail icon. To get the window back, I have to click on the Chromium icon. Clicking on the gmail icon launches a new instance of it (also tied to the Chromium icon).

Dec 2, 2010

if i run chromium with --enable-gpu-rendering flag chromium's display looks like it's shattered into thousands of pieces and I can't understand a thing. This doesn't happens if I have a previous instance of chromium opened in the usual way, without any flag. In this case if I open another chromium window with the --enable-gpu-rendering flag it's display looks ok, but I can't figure out what's the problem and how could this be fixed if there's solution for it of course.

I have recently thought of uninstalling it since I can't tell what is out of place and what isn't, but before I do that I wanted to ask everyones opinion regarding what would be the best way to handle such a program on a desktop that has some core files changed reguarly. This sytem is running Gentoo, so updates affect a number of directories.

Is it possible to force AWN to group this specific chromium window under the Grooveshark launcher that I have in the dock? Turning off grouping does not solve this either, as it just shows grooveshark as another chromium window.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Access 10.04LTS - GNOME Hasn't Been Installed Correctly

Jun 6, 2011

I cannot access ubuntu anymore. I have ubuntu 10.04LTS Lucid Lynx. Ubuntu always prompts me to do updates. On the last update, the system wasn't able to find 4 files online. So it aborted the update and reverted to the previous state. On the next startup I could still access ubuntu. But the startup after that I got the inlog-screen (with username and password), and even with the correct username and password that's as far as it goes. In the lower right corner it says:

Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly contact your administrator. What can I do to access ubuntu again? I can, when I reboot, start up in recovery mode (but I have no clue what to do with the prompt). I can also start up older 'kernels': kernel 2.6.32-30-generic, 2.6.32-29-generic, 2.6.32-28-generic, 2.6.32-24-generic. Each of them also has a recovery mode. Not sure if this is useful at all though. Laptop: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MT-37, 1.99 GHz, 1,00 GB RAM.

General :: How To Tell When A Machine Is Fsck-ing And Hasn't Had A Kernel Panic

Jul 31, 2011

I have a server with Debian on it that I regularly reboot after upgrades. Sometimes (on schedule) fsck will check a disk when the computer is booting. With the exception of sitting in front of the console to observe the fsck, how can I determine the difference between a problematic halt and an fsck (besides waiting out the fsck, hoping it is an fsck)? When I send the computer down to reboot, I will usually have a terminal window open pinging the computer so I know when it has come back up. My first thoughts drifted to fantasizing about hacking fsck to respond to pings with some special magic byte so you could tell via ping that a computer was fsck-ing, but I'm thinking there have got to be easier ways..

Software :: "Previous Installation Hasn't Been Completed"?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm a newbie, but will post this here since it mentions specific software programs. Obviously, if I'm posting to the wrong forum topic,Trying to view linked items in firefox (sometimes media, sometimes other things, sometimes just loading pages which i believe have embedded elements) results in an error which doesn't include links or suggestions or even a complete error code.I can't remember in which app, but not firefox, I was getting an error that included a file or app or utility which wasn't installed which began with gt or possibly gtk.Going to ubuntu software center and searching for "gtk..." or trying to install media playing software such as GnomePlayer, I get the following error:Previous Installation hasn't been completed. The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.

As a newbie, this is meaningless to me without some kind of indication of what to do next. I get this error for basically every installable option in the software center that might fix the issue of not being able to view/subscribe/download media. (eg, Gnome Mplayer, DVD::rip, Avidemux gtk+, pulse audio device chooser, gftp, bluetooth manager, geany, miro, gtkpod... the list is seemingly infinite)
