I have the latest version of ubuntu, my problem is my desktop background is black, when I shut the PC down the desktop background (the picture set as my background) flashes up, (the picture will change when I change the background). Looks like the black desktop background is hiding it. Also when opening emails with attachments the attachment opens then gets covered with the black background.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and played around a bit and have got it booting into cli instead of the login screen. gnome is my default desktop environment but i wish to run kde along side to play around with. When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm able to set it up but everytime I reboot or logout it goes to the default Fedora12 picture. My pictures is in the list so have to select it everytime in system/preference/look & feel/apparence/background. I didn't find any file to edit in my home folder to fix this.
btw I'm unable to edit the menu when I right click on mainmenu icon
I just installed 9.10, and the "File Manager" seems to not be working. I cant get ubuntu to display a background picture on the desktop, and anything I put on the desktop is not selectable. If I try to access anything under the "Places" tab, it tries to open a window, which read "opening whatever" but nothing happens. I can access files via terminal just fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI did remake my minimal installation. My window manager produces no background picture else I did add someone. So i will do it using xorg-xli. I did find the (in other cases usual) xinitrc as /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc but in only refers to an other script
and the other script (/etc/X11/Xsession) does not include some usuable steps to include easily supplementary starting commands.
Where is to do that in Debian SID actually?
I added an entry to grub's menu.lst and reran grub (grub-install hd0) and now my background is gone and the entries just show up like on a normal console.
I searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it?
I have not changed anything in menu.lst except for adding the new OS.
When Ambiance is selected as the theme, the broadcast box in the "Me Menu" is black text on a near black background. Changing the "Input Boxes" color changed the color of that boxes background on every theme except Ambiance. The problem seems to be with having "Controls" set to Ambiance, because having any other theme customized with Ambiance controls selected causes this bug again.
I really don't want to use any of the other themes because I find them horrid in comparison. how to fix this bug, or if someone would be kind enough to post a proper bug report for this? Can anyone else recreate this error on theirs?
I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi just fixed my old-ish laptop (pop accident) and instead of putting window on it my dad talked me into trying ubuntu out, gotta say love it, fast and everything but having major problems. i have a lenovo 3000 v200. everything is the same as out of the box except the keyboard, only thing i really needed to replace.
ok problems
1) wireless is not working: i have the switch on (side of the laptop) and bluetooth lights up but wireless doesnt. (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG). now i just learned about 'rfkill list' it shows that there is a soft block on the wireless. tried " rfkill unblock 0" nothing happened. also when i tried finding out wat kernel im using " uname-r" to find out more on why its not unblocking, the CLI says "comand isnt found" next two problems are small but are still frustrating
2) built in camera: the green light is on next to the lens but when trying to test the camera on skype or a photo program the video feed/ picture is black, or blank. not sure what i can do to fix that.
3) fingerprint scanner: yes i have one, i know its not efficient but I still like using it to login in instead of typing. im not sure how to get linux/ubuntu to recognize it if it even is. not sure how to set it up if it is recognized.
i would like to fix the wireless more than anything, if i can fix the camera and scanner then yeay, otherwise i can survive. oh and note i did try using the "additional drivers" app. nothing popped up.
Since August of 2009 I have been under attack by corporate Black Hats. I found a 105GB FAT16 Hidden partition on my hard drive. Seventy four percent full (78GB). What led me to this was the fact that I couldn't help but notice that my Internet connection was a revolving door that never stopped spinning. So I went looking for why.
I removed the hidden flag, and patched the partition, but couldn't open that thing no matter what I did. I tried for a month. The attacks started as soon as I stopped these guys from accessing that data. At this point we are 9 months into 24/7 attacks. I have interviewed with the FBI, and local law enforcement, but they are intent on making me out to be a conspiracy nut. I am not at all. All they wanted to do is quiz me on my computer skills. If I managed to draw the attention of a corporate security group they killed it.

I just upgraded to karmic and now my background is black and I can not change it. The back ground shows through the program panel when it is set to transparent. Sort of weird

I have just upgraded from ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10. After rebooting my computer i found that the background is now plain black. I have tried changing it in the appearance settings, but no matter what I change is to it stays black.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was configuring the vnc server or remote desktop using the "gconf-editor" -- "desktop - gnome - remote_access" pane, and first I clicked on "disable background" to see if it was usefull or not to disable it (in terms of speed). It worked fine but sometimes when closing the connection, the background refuses to reenable, mantaining the black background...
That's ok, I decided to disable the feature and share via vnc the background as it is a wired net and I do not really need this feature.
My surprise is that now, whith the feature DISABLE (box unchecked), I cannot set a background, it is always black and I find no way to go back in this...
is this common, or something that can be "easily" fixed?

The only way to see the files is to click and drag my mouse over the files in the system. Is there a way to fix this? I've attached a screenshot for clarity.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed xubuntu natty, and the gdm theme (xubuntu-gdm-theme) has somehow reverted to something ugly. The background is black instead of showing xubuntu-greybird.png, the panel bar is light gray, and the shutdown button is now gray instead of a red/orange power icon.
The problem appeared while I was tweaking my account settings, possibly when I used the users-admin tool, but I'm not sure.
I tried purging and reinstalling the following packages:
gdm
xubuntu-gdm-theme
xubuntu-artwork
xubuntu-default-settings
xubuntu-desktop
...but that didn't help.
For comparison, I'm attaching screen shots of my (broken) gdm screen and a correct one from a virtual machine. (Try to ignore the fact that they're different screen resolutions.)
I've been running KDE4 with Suse 11.2 for about a year or so now, with no problems. Yesterday, the background to my screen suddenly went black. Open windows were unaffected, but I could see my theme, the task manager, etc. I couldn't open any programs other than the ones already open (and ones that they launch).This problem was system-wide, in that it affects all accounts on my machine.I thought I'd solved the problem after discussion with someone by email, by forcing KDE to recreate itself. I did this by
mv ~/.kde4 ~/oldkde4
then relogging. This, in itself, seemed to make matters worse, so I went
mv ~/.kde4 ~/newkde4
mv ~/oldkde4 ~/.kde4
and relogged. To my surprise, everything worked thereafter for a few hours.
I think this was coincidence, because, after a few hours, the same thing happened and the "fix" didn't work anymore.I checked .xsession-error and it says

Whenever I use code completion in Eclipse for a function, the function's PHP help/docs cannot be seen because it has a black background. How can I change this? I'm using Ubuntu 10 64 bit, default theme. Default eclipse theme. I've tried changing all the black colors in the Eclipse preferences under both Appearance and the other colors area to no success.
This is very annoying, as I cannot view help for any PHP functions without using my web browser.

View 3 Replies View RelatedToday I decided to customise my Ubuntu by installing my own picture over the default picture used in the log-in screen. I did a search and found it (in /usr/share/backgrounds). I looked into it a bit and found that the image was a .jpg with the name changed to a .png extension. I though I copied the title of it but must have hit the wrong button.
I put my picture in the folder. I then copied the name of the file, then deleted it. I went to paste the name over my new picture, and then found that I had hit the wrong button to copy it. When I delete things I usually hold shift to perma-delete it, so it isn't in the bin. Oh btw, I did this before in 10.04 and it worked in case anyone wants to do the same. It just needs to be a .jpg file, renamed to end with .png

i used to have 9.10 but now upgraded to the latest version. Back then I changed the background to full black for both the preboot screen and login screen.Now after upgrading it changed it to the purple color screen. I am wondering how I can change back the background color?
