Ubuntu :: Recovered Files / Folders From USB Are Locked?
Apr 15, 2010
I have recovered most of my USB drive, but a couple of folders are locked and look like files. I'm unable to change permissions on them and "You are not the owner so you cannot change these permissions." appears in the properties tab. The owner is "184444735 - user #-184444735" and the group is "17414907" which makes no sense to me. Most other folders and files are OK. The disaster I recovered from was a partition move that failed. I used fsck to get most things back. Any idea how I get these couple of folders (the most important one is one of them "Documents" of course). to be visible?

I had lost my emails and contact after using Evolution. some of forum user recommended to use photorec to recover all the files. I used and have stored all the files in a folder. Now my problem is there are over 1500 folders and in there over thousand and thousand of text files. How should I recognize which folder contains email and contacts and how to import to Evolution ?

I managed to very stupidly (and avoidably) overwrite the hard drive that contained all my stuff--music, photos, home videos from the 80's that were painstakingly converted to digital movies, etc. After running Photorec and recovering much of the data to another disk, I'd like to be able to rename the music files using whatever exif data/tags are available.

My spare laptop refuses to load into the OS (it's running 10.10) or even give me a log-in screen - it sits there with a blinking cursor in the corner of a black screen. It's a 7 year-old laptop I mainly use as a mediacenter, which means I keep very little on it so I figured I'd just do a complete reinstall and move on.
So I threw in a livecd to grab the one folder I needed before I was going to wipe the drive, but apparently at some point this folder got permission locked, and it won't let me open it or copy it to an external through the livecd. Is there any way I can get at this folder?

I just converted to Fedora from Ubuntu and I have some questions:
1. How can I install nvidia driver? There is no 'jockey-gtk' in my fedora :3 (video card is nvidia 7200GS)
2. whats the equivalent for 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' in fedora? (ubuntu-restricted-extras is a package for A/V codecs, Java, microsoft fonts and Flash plugin)
3. I just move data from other hard disk to the fedora ones and now all the folders are locked (lock icon).
I try with:
su
chown -R fedora:fedora /home/fedora
but the permissions are denied for gvfs.

I want to use my flash drive, but I had files I put on using Ubuntu a few weeks back. Now I can only open them in read only copies and can't remove them, from the flash drive. I also have had some issues with file permissions on the hard drive. I was planning on reinstalling after a backup but now I don't know if that would be logical because the files might all be locked. I wanted to reinstall because I have issues with USB and these file issues.

I've just started using the amazingly useful Ubuntu One, but I can't sync files from my computer, due to the pesky locked keyring, default, which wishes to be unlocked. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the password for the default keyring is. Is there any way I could find this out? I've included a screenshot, just in case.

I have a laptop that I have been running 64bit lucid on after some problems with NFS Samba and SMB the installation got a bit trashed after some workarounds I removed nautilus completely and rebooted and got the looping login screen........ then I tried a suggestion to purge gdm but that left me with a blank grey screen and a mouse pointer. X11 has failed so I have no graphics
I can login properly to the drive from the terminal and can access my drive contents... I cannot load dolphin or nautilus from the terminal. So I have booted from a live cd and have moved some of my data to another partition but some is locked to the owner (me). How can I get my locked data opened so I can copy or move it to another drive, so I can perform a fresh install.

Nautilus problem in ubuntu 11.04 I recently upgraded and now having problems with nautilus.
1) I don't know for sure if it's related but all of the icons on my desktop (files located in desktop) have little lock symbols in the upper right-hand corner of the icon.
2) I cannot open files from the desktop (because they are evidently locked)
3) I cannot open any of the folders listed when I go to "Places" (between Applications and System top of the screen) Running nautilus from the terminal, I CAN go to different folders and open files in the usual manner.

I have noticed that the files and folders search in Unity, only shows up those files which have been amended (or possibly just opened) since the install.
i was wondering if there was a way i could have the search index (or something vaguely equivalent) all the files on my machine. This is especially important given that i reinstall the OS every six months on a new distribution cycle, copying all my old files across.
Without being able to see my old files the search is pretty much reduced to a recent history search.

Whenever I save a text file edited with LibreOffice, I get a new, locked file which can be identified with its "~.lock" file prefix. This locked file prevents access (probably for security reasons) to the original file. However, this is a serious impediment as it forbids any further editing of the original file or document so long as the locked file has not been removed. Though erasing this locked file (which can be made visible with "Ctrl-H" if hidden) should free the original, this in fact is not the case. how to unlock these locked files?

I have just recently setup our network with an Ubuntu server which is being accessed by one Ubuntu workstation with nfs, & one XP workstation with Samba. Following instructions from the web, I set permissions like this:
sudo chmod 777 /media/Data sudo chown -R curley:curley /media/Data The problem is that files created in Samba are locked from nfs & vice/versa. I am assuming I need to add the nfs network share to the Curley group or use something more global than curley to make this work?
Samba is working ok from Ubuntu when browsing through Nautilus, but there is no access to shares when doing things like uploading or downloading files to the web (the "save file" window only shows local folders). So I guess I wouldn't mind just using Samba if I could map a folder in Samba to solve that problem.

I dual boot into Arch Linux and OS X 10.6 on my MacBook pro. I synced my UID between both OSes and created an HFS partition (with no journaling) to use as a shared home/Users partition. For the most part it works just as I'd expect, but sometimes when I'm booted into OS X certain files are "locked" (when I get info on a particular file the "Locked" box is checked under the "General" pane. I can resolve the issue by manually unchecking the box) and/or I get "Operation not permitted" when I try deleting or chmod'ing a file. In both cases I don't see anything out of the ordinary on the permission bits displayed with ls -l, except for a trailing '@' character in the position where the sticky bit would normally occur:
This '@' character shows up on ALL normal files, so doesn't seem to be linked to the locked/operation not permission situation.
On the Linux side of things I never have permission problems. To the best of my limited knowledge and experience with ACLs I've not found any ACLs on any of the files in question.
For what it's worth, I do most of my file editing using emacs (Aquamacs in OSX), is it possible it is setting weird permission bits?
What is the "locked" setting that OS X uses and does it have a permission bit equivalent (so at the very least I could recursively unlock all files in my home directory from the terminal) why might some, but not other files get "locked" when booting into OS X what is the meaning of the '@' character?

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.
The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

I found this command that works great finding and replacing a simple string to another in files located in that folder and all sub-folders.
Code: find . -name '*.php' | xargs perl -pi -e 's/OldText/NewText/g'
The problem I have is that I need to replace a more complex string, like this: Old string: /mnt/stor6-wc2-dfw1/627896/982574/ New string: /mnt/stor8-wc2-dfw1/369587/302589/ There I don't know how to do it... since the / is what separates the old from the new strings, and the strings that I want to replace have / in it. Also, I would like to know how to specify under what folder replace the files, for example, I want that it search/replaces all files under /var/www/mysite/htdocs folder.

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 from clean and installed Gnome 3 without any errors. If you don't want to read all the chit-chat, you can just read the "Resume" paragraph. I received an Upgrade, but could only partly upgrade. I thought "Yay, updates! It can't hurt, can it?". While I upgraded, a friend of mine contacted me to tell me not upgrade, because it broke his Ubuntu. Too late, pal. When it was done upgrading, I could just sit there looking at dialog box saying: "Click restart to buy your tombstone". I finished my work and restarted to find that there was no problems what so ever. I booted up and logged in to find this message covering the entire screen: It is in Danish, so let me translate it for you:
[code]...
I then discovered something strange. I could press the Super-key and see the Gnome 3 interface. I could run programs, but as soon as I chose a desktop, the message from above would lay on top of the entire screen once again. I managed to save some screenshots by holding Enter, while clicking on the "Save screenshot" window......

I have an 8x1TB raid6 array that I finally got back to a good state (see my other post here: [URL]..This is on a 9.04 server Now I can assemble the array no problem, but mounting is the issue. I think the reason might be because the array order changed. In the process of recovering I removed the /dev/md0 array and created a new array. In the create array command it told me:
Code:
mdadm: /dev/sdb1 appears to be part of a raid array: for each device in the array. I confirmed that I wanted to continue and the array was recreated. I think this overwrote the superblock, but I'm not sure.
After the sync I tried to mount the array using:

I got a free flash drive from Columbia College that has some files I want to remove. I did the right click thing and they are read only. I tried to change to read and write but I got. Sorry, could not change the permissions of "ColumbiaCollegeViewbook.pdf": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system
Now this thing only shows up as 5.4 MB Yea that is right Megabytes! But I have a plan for it. So is there any way to get the files off so I can put mine on it?

I am trying to find out how to search for folders that do not contain certain files. My music collection of 20+GB a is organised into folders (Artist-Album). I would now like to ensure that every album folder contains the respective cover art image as a cover.jpg file. Quite a few do already, but many don't. So I would like to find all folders (not files) that fulfill the following criteria:is a subfolder of /home/user/Music;
Does not contain further subfolders (i.e. don't want to find artist folders);
Does not contain a file named cover.jpg.

What I've noticed recently in file managing is that sometimes one file might fit multiple categories yet you must fit it into just one (without linking the file). It is most essential when managing an ebook library or a project library (for example have I placed a particular script under PHP_Scripts folder or CMS folder... I tend to forget).
What I'm looking for is a Tag categorization type of management for files. The PS3 file manager is a good example for this since I could make it generate folders by the artist's name, the year etc. for music files, then I would just navigate to the particular folder to find what I was looking for. Now my question is if such thing already exists as a nautilus extension or as a stand alone application... If not would you guys think it would be worth creating? If you do should it be approached as:
* A Nautilus extension? * or as a python script? For example one that creates a folder with folders in it, made up from the [nautilus] tags of the files you want to browse, then creates links of all the files [you wanted to browse] automatically to the appropriate tag folder[s] generated.

Although I've been using Ubuntu for a while, I haven't really done any scripting thus far,but now find myself needing to do (what I thought was) some fairly simple stuff. However, despite much searching, I have been unable to find a solution to my problem.I need a script which will delete all of the files/folders from a directory except those I specify. From the command line, I am able to use:rm -r !(constant|system|*.msh|)
which works fine, deleting everything except the 'constant' and 'system' folders (and everything in them) and any files ending in '.msh'. I have tried to put this into a script file, specifying to use the bash shell, and escaping the required characters, but I just get the message 'cannot find !(constant|*.msh)'.I have read that using the find command may be a better way of doing it, but so far I have not been able to make the command work in the way which I need (I have easily been able to delete ALL the files/folders in the directory!).

I need to backup my data through the cloning or echoing option, which means I want to have my new files/folders in the left copied to the right, replacing older files if that's the case, but I also need the deleted files and folders on the left to be deleted on the right.
I'm using Conduit right now, but it doesn't clone folders/files, also tried Synchrorep but the same issue. Should I try Unison or Rsync? Will they offer this option? Other options?
