Ubuntu :: Power Cord Makes Screen Flicker?

May 25, 2010

I have LucidLynx installed on my eeepc 1005PE. I am currently using it under the gnome interface but i also have the notebook version of it installed (probably because i got a notebook remix of it, not quite sure). All is well except for the following: after i power up my notebook, login and i can see the panel i plug the power cord in. And the my screen starts flickering in orangeblack colors. Nothing i do seems to take it out of this state but a good old hard-reboot.

Ubuntu :: Get Screen Flicker Randomly After Every 1 Min

May 13, 2010

I have downloaded the ver10.04. I am running it on my laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce GO 7600 128MB graphics card. I am using the NVIDIA driver on the system. The screen flickers randomly after say every 1 min. By flickering I mean it just refreshes and goes blank for say 1ms during the refresh. It happens even more if I turn on CompViz option.

There is no notification of an error. It doesn't matter if I try the recovery console or safe mode there is the same issue when I try and login with this user. However, I can login with a different user open a console and su to that user that wouldn't login at the GUI.

I'm getting the occasional full-screen black flicker on my laptop, it's an Asus G73JW with an nVidia 460M card, running the restricted drivers. I've installed Gnome3, and so far like it more than Unity, but the flickering needs to stop

I've also noticed that some animations aren't as smooth as they should be, like when I hit the top-left corner to bring up the dock it studders just a wee bit.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dell Monitor Screen Flicker - How To Fix It

Sep 11, 2010

I was on earlier 9.x version of ubuntu with following configuration working perfectly: IBM ThinkPad T60 with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400 VGA graphics card (found it from lspci) With an external Dell 19" monitor attached to it. I upgraded yesterday to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and now the Dell monitor screen keeps flickering all the time! I always work with an external bigger monitor attached to my laptop as working for long hours on the smaller screen of the laptop gives me headache. The frustrating point is, this setting was working perfectly until I was on Ubuntu 9.x, I upgraded to 10.04 LTS and this has stopped working.

Ubuntu Installation :: Distracting And Unusable Screen - Flicker In 10.10

Oct 13, 2010

Screen flicker Ubuntu 10.10
After installing Ubuntu (Version 10.10 DVD amd 64Ubuntu 10.10 live DVD).
On the following hardware
Gigabyte GA-K8VT800-RH motherboard
3GB ram
AMD Sempron 3400 cpu.
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro Video card. 256M ddr2 AGP VGA/TV0/DV1-1
p/no 882c85-03

The screen resolution looked very good with all screen resolutions working well The colours and fonts very clear. All other device drivers worked 100%. But unfortunately the display flashes about every 10 seconds and the partial beak up of the display only lasts a fraction of a second and very distracting and is unusable. Testing with Ubuntu 10.10 live DVD. With this months Linux Format Magazine also exhibits this problem. However deleting the partition and installing Ubuntu 10.04 Beta1 DVD -386. And all updates downloaded. Works 100% with no screen flicker.

Ubuntu :: GTX 460M: Clock Changes Make Screen Flicker?

Dec 6, 2010

My G73JW works really great except for 1 thing. A change in the performance level causes short black flickering on the display, which is absolutely inacceptable (e.g. with compiz). Setting the preferred mode to "performance" locks the performance level and helps but seems like a bad solution (batter life and heat).

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting To CDROM Makes Blank Screen?

Jan 19, 2011

When I start my system on the Ubuntu 10.10 CDROM I get a tiny icon at the bottom, then the screen shuts off due to no signal. So I cannot run the Live CDROM. Relevant here is that Debian CDROM runs just fine. (Lenny installs and runs good, but squeeze does not) Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) gets me a pretty graphical welcome screen, then the monitor shuts off just like Ubuntu and Kubuntu.WinXP installed and runs without a hitch.

My system: Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G with 4Gb ram, 750 Gb SATA HDD, Nvidia Quadro video card.I have gone through the BIOS settings looking for clues:SATA AHCI mode is set to IDE (versus AHCI)SATA port 0-3 native mode set to enabled (versus disabled which would be legacy IDE mode)Azalia codec set to auto (verus disabled)

Fedora Security :: User "jetty" Is World-readable - Screen Started To Flicker Some Time ?

Oct 3, 2010

This morning I ran sectool (in terminal for the first time. Before that I used sectool-gui) and I got this (written to file)...

See attachment please..

I think... the user "Jetty" may be a part of (or has something to do with SQL?).. This machine I have is not a server (in fact I know pretty much nothing about web servers).. this machine is used purely for local app development (python PyQt4/ and C++/wx - making games, general utilities, specialized calculators...etc)

So... Can anyone please tell me who the user "Jetty" is ? (The others are safe, I compiled python/SIP/PyQt4/wx/aliens from source... so that;s probably why it doesn't belong to packages.

Plus, My screen started to flicker some time (could it be possible someone is messing w/ my xorg configs?)

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Flicker During And After Installation

Jun 15, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 alongside Windows. During the installation process, everything was black, then it flickered for a couple of seconds, then went black again. This happened many times. After the installation, I was hoping it would stop, but the same thing happens at the login screen. It flickers for a couple of seconds, then goes black. I figure it has something to do with my display drivers, but I don't know how to install them without using Ubuntu. If it makes any difference, I have an ATI Radeon 4890 video card.

Red Hat :: Black Screen (power Saving) Is Not Coming Up On Login Screen?

Nov 24, 2008

I have a few machines set up and running Red Hat 4.1.2-42 in a computer lab. I also have a single test machine running the same version. The machines in the lab work flawlessly. However, when machines are on the login screen, they don't go into power saving mode. That is, after a certain amount of inactivity, the idle login screen should be replaced by a black power saving screen. But this does not happen. The monitor should go into standby (the little green light becomes orange, and the whole screen shuts down until you move your mouse again...you know the drill).I know this is supposed to be the case because this works on the test machine. It just doesn't work in the lab. I think it has something to do with gdm, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

OpenSUSE :: Possible To Have Trackpad & Cord Mouse Going At Different Speeds?

Mar 13, 2010

I've got a few things I need sorted out with my openSUSE installation:

1- I've read all the tutorials, done all the walkthroughs. How do I install APT, Synaptic & gdebi? To get Synaptic & gdebi, I need APT & everything tells me it's in the repos if I search for it. Nothing. How do I install it?
2- Is it possible to have my trackpad & cord mouse going at different speeds? My cord mouse is fine speed, but my trackpad is lightning fast & hard to control.
3- I have a secondary monitor.
4- Banshee doesn't play anything. It's a similiar situation to APT, but I still can't find anything. I've resorted to using Songbird (which I'm fine with), but it's podcast support is REALLY shotty.
5- Has anyone figured out how to manage an iPod Nano 5th gen yet? I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but... maybe...
6- Am I able to replace my HOME folder with an external hard drive? So that when I download something it goes to the hard drive, rather than the downloads folder.

I read that I need to download an ndiswrapper but I dont know where to find this download AND even if I could download it to a zipdribe, I have trouble opening a USB flash in Linux becuase its not a "valid block device". This is after the command "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbflash"

Ubuntu :: Power Management Screen Not Turning Off?

May 12, 2010

I have an issue where the screen on my laptop will not shut off with the power management tool. The Default Power Manager does not have an option for this.My screen will go blank after a set amount of time, but the lcd-backlight will remain on. I would want the power manager to shut the screen off completely (including turning off the lcd backlight) without shutting down the computer it-self. So the computer can continue to do what I left it to do in the case I forget to close the lid. With the screen shut off completely, will preserve the life of the back light and reduce power consumption.

Is there a better power manager app that will allow me to do this a tweak to the existing default power manager that will allow the functionality I am seeking? laptop was perfectly able to do this under a win-xp environment, so I know the machine is physically capable of doing this. Note: My WinXP OS and Ubuntu OS are on seperate physical drives so there is no dual boot issues. So when I am using one there is no trace of the other present

Ubuntu :: Use PC's Power Button While Screen Is Locked

However, if a client has to shut down the box, they can't. Note this is a headless unit, no monitor, keyboard, or mouse. It will ONLY be used to play streaming audio. I need for the client to be able to safely shutdown the unit by pressing the power button. But, when the power button is pressed, ubuntu asks for the user password. Is there a way to just make the system shutdown without entering a password?

Ubuntu :: Screen Doesn't Go Into Low-power Mode / What To Do?

But the problem is that it never goes to sleep. The screen saver comes on after 10 minutes, as scheduled, but when I come back even after a long period of time, the screen hasn't gone to sleep (it hasn't gone into low-power mode).

Please let me know what specific config information I should provide to help debug this and I'll post it here.

Ubuntu :: After Power Failure Boots Into Blank Screen

Jun 23, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, which is installed to a second hard drive on my desktop. Earlier this afternoon, there were two 10 second power outages in my neighborhood. The first caused the system to restart with no effect, but after the second outage Ubuntu no longer boots properly. The problem is this: When I boot, I get to the grub screen. I have tried choosing four different options (the most recent kernel, a slightly older kernel, and the recovery mode of each). For each, kernel begins loading, but at a certain point the input to the monitor dries up, and after a few seconds the monitor enters standby mode. When I boot into recovery mood, the last message I see before the screen goes blank includes "udev starting version 151" followed by three lines that read "assuming [something that I can't read before the screen goes blank]." The computer itself remains on, but I have no way of knowing exactly what it is doing.

There seems to be no hardware damage as I can boat into Vista, and I can also boot into 10.04 from a USB. I've used fsck to check the partitions on my hard drive and the test came up clean for all of them. Since I only installed 10.04 a week ago, I could just copy the handful of useful files I have to my external drive and re-install, but I'd like to get some experience troubleshooting this problem. My first assumption is some kind of problem with the video drivers or GUI.
