I keep getting the updates icon popping up asking me to install software that is either already installed (Adobe Flash Player 10.1) or something that fails when I actually try to install is but I am sure it is also already installed (RPM Fusion Repository Config -free and nonfree). When I try to install the RPM Fusion packages it asked me for a Software Signature and then fails with the following message: failed to install signature: Traceback

I have the flash player installed already and I am sure I already installed RPM Fusion. how can I resolve this and stop it from constantly asking me to install these packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: NTFS Error Stops Dual-boot Install On Fake-raid?

Feb 23, 2011

I am attempting to install Maverick on an older pc. It has (2) mirrored 153 GB SATA drives. I set aside 33GB for a linux partition, by shrinking the partition in Vista.

Choosing to "Install along side windows" is not an available option. I can only choose use who disk, or use empty area. I choose use the empty area, and the Ubiquity installer gets hung up when attempting to format the empty space as EXT4. When I scroll up on the output I notice some error messages referencing NTFS. When I use Gparted it shows a possible problem.

The device /dev/sda1 doesn't exist
ntfsresize v2.0.0 (libntfs 10:0:0
ERROR(2):Failed to check 'dev/sda1' mount state: No such
file or directory
Probably /etc/mtab is missing. It's too risky to continue. You
might try an another Linux ditro.

Unable to read the contents of this file system!Because of this some operations may be unavailable.

The following list of software packages is required for ntfs file system support: ntfsprogs.

I ran chkdsk /r on the Vista partiton, in case there was a problem there. The issue still persists.

General :: Debian Synaptic Package Manager Error: Xserver-xorg Stripped?

Feb 10, 2011

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former. In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files´┐Ż47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attachedDebian_error_msg.png? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

Ubuntu :: Install Backuppc Using The Synaptic Package Manager?

Jan 5, 2010

In a moment of temporary insanity I tried to install Backuppc using the synaptic package manager, but started to panic when the installer tried to set up an Apache web server on my PC (which I do not want). At that point I tried to cancel the installation, but got an error message. I then marked the package for complete removal in the package manager, but every time I click the apply I get an error message, "E: backuppc: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2" and the package, which did not install correctly in the first place, refuses to go. When I ran the update manager today, to install the latest updates, the manager tried to continue with the Apache installation stage of the Backuppc installation. How do I get rid of it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Package Upgrade ?

Feb 23, 2010

I am trying to get Ubuntu up and running on my Dell XPS 400 desktop. I verified the checksum of the iso (ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso) I downloaded, and I ran the cd check before installing. I also ran a memtest for 16 hours with no errors.

So I install Ubuntu, and everything seems ok. Now, I try to update my software packages, and the upgrade always fails after all the packages are downloaded (sometime during actual installation). So, I have to reboot, and the file system will not mount. I run fsck and reboot, and now I cannot even boot normally or to a shell... This has happened to me twice in row.

What is the best plan of attack when a package fails to install midway? I want to use Ubuntu, but this is making it pretty hard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Package Tab Greyed Out

Jun 24, 2011

ubuntu 11.04,Windows 7 dual boot. Almost total linux / ubuntu novice.I just installed ubuntu 11.04 this afternoon. The installation went smoothly but I did not get wireless internet connection. In the top panel : Network device not working (firmware missing)Some hunting indicated that one needed to remove some files and install some others using synaptic. Found synaptic, loaded it by clicking and found the file to install. However the Package Tab was completely greyed out. Any suggestions where I am going wrong?

BTW the 11.04 is different enough that I have not yet even found the terminal so any suggestions re it, please include a suggestion on how to find it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Connect To Synaptic Package Manager?

Jan 1, 2010

Have a new Dell Vostro A90 that came with 8.04 and I have installed 9.10 from a CD that was mailed to me. I can connect to the internet with a wired connection, but I cannot connect wirelessly. When I've tried to install the broadcom driver by going to Synaptic Package Manager and hitting reload, I get a message that 1 of 15 packages is downloading, but nothing downloads and I get a failed message for each of the jobs. Any clues as to how to proceed from here? I am very new to Ubuntu.
