Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Only Work After Restarting From Windows?

Jul 23, 2010

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 in one of my notebook's HD partitions. It all runs smoothly, except for wireless. For some reason, Ubuntu only finds my wireless connections after I boot into Windows and then restart. If I boot straight into Ubuntu, I always get the 'device not ready' or 'disconnected' message under 'Wireless networks'.

Does anyone know what might be the cause of the problem and what can I do to solve it?

Below are some information about my computer, as requested in the 'How to post a wireless issue' thread.

These are the results AFTER restarting from Windows.

Machine brand: Mirax - XT8000 NTL 243200

Code:

02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

Ubuntu Networking :: Rebooted And On Restarting The Wireless Connection Will Not Connect

Oct 24, 2010

I have been running Meerkat in its various forms for the last few weeks. Wireless connection has not been a problem at all. I rebooted about 15 mins ago and on restarting the wireless connection will not connect. I checked to see what the problem was and clicked on Edit Connections and on the wireless tab.

My wireless is set to auto and its name is SKY 24550. I now have 2 entries in the same name and the one that is trying to connect is asking for wep 128 bit security details to be entered. My connection used WPA&WPA2 personal.

Ok, I thought I'll delete the new one (with the different security setting) and try again.

No good, it still asks for the same security details.

So I go back into edit connections and the new one is back again! I can't get rid of it, and while it's there the one that should connect isn't getting the chance.

Fortunately ethernet is working ok and I also have a Natty install which also connects ok through the old wireless connection, but not in Maverick.

Fedora Networking :: Enable Wireless Networking Does Not Work In Windows?

I've been experiencing a problem with Fedora in which when I enable Wireless in Fedora, Wireless networking does not work in windows. HOwever, when disabled, it works correctly. Windows claims it is "not able to find any networks to connect to"

EDIT: It seems that when wireless is disabled manually on fedora before shutdown, there are no problems in windows.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Ad Hoc Windows XP ICS - Ping The Desktop Doesn't Work

Feb 8, 2010

how to go about getting Ubuntu to receive an ad-hoc wireless ICS enabled connection. The internet connection is shared through a virtual machine running XP (with the USB wireless dongle under XP's control), on my desktop PC, in order to escape my ISP's no NAT policy. Ubuntu is on both the desktop PC (the sender), and the laptop (the receiver). The desktop and laptop also run windows 7. I managed to get my laptop Ubuntu to connect to my virtual machine XP, by setting the IP, subnet and gateway of all wireless devices, as was suggested in [URL] - I did use the Network Manager GUI, but pinging the desktop doesn't work.

Even with the IP configuration, Windows 7 on the laptop receives the internet fine. The next step is getting Ubuntu to receive. I can do any kind of configuration in a virtual machine, such as install Ubuntu. In virtual machine XP I used 192.168.0.1 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 1.1.1.1. On the laptop Ubuntu 192.168.0.2 same everything else. I understand nothing about networks. I know there is stuff I can do in the console, but how will Network Manager cope with me doing that?

Ubuntu Networking :: LSUSB Command Doesn't Work As Well As Windows Wireless Drivers?

Sep 1, 2011

I can get the command program to work, but not the desktop program to work. Windows Wireless Driver was working, but now every time I try to start it, it won't load, and will just be an empty window. This happened after I tried to installed a driver (which was the wrong one), and I restarted the computer. After this happened, I tried to reinstall the program, but to no avail.

The command program works, but I can't use the command lsusb, because it just pauses and doesn't do anything. Do I have to wait for it to kick in. I'm pretty sure that this is not it, because when I try the lspci, this works fine (but it's not the one I need). Please help, and don't make any stupid replies.

Ubuntu :: Internet Won't Work Without Restarting It After Startup

May 16, 2010

After upgrading to 10.04 I've had to run /etc/init.d networking restart to get my internet connection to work after startup on my desktop computer. Any ideas on how to find out what's wrong and how to fix it? I didn't uprage my laptop yet and it still works just fine so I'm thinking this is related to the upgrade. Softwarewise the only relevant networking related difference between my desktop and laptop is the ubuntu version and that I have openvpn set up on the desktop for work related stuff.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Restarting Windows Messes Up Grub

Nov 12, 2010

I dual boot my ubuntu 10.04 with my windows 7, I had 4 partitions on my machine, 2 ntfs and 2 ext4 partitions. But I noticed I still had an unallocated 10gb on my hdd, I couldn't see this unallocated space from ubuntu, fdisk, gparted etc. So I used diskmgmt in windows to create the 10gb ntfs partition, when I restarted I couldn't boot into either windows or ubuntu. I used my livecd to reinstall grub and everything was fine until I booted into windows 7 and restarted. Again my grub has been messed up.

Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get Wireless Network Adapter To Be Read By 'Windows Wireless Drivers'

Nov 24, 2010

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).

1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal

I think that is is booting up the recovery partion of Windows. I don't know how to change it so that it is looking at the correct portition. I know it has something to do with the menu.lst file but when I try to open it says that I do not have premission. I am not sure where to go to edit it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Restarting DHCP With Www-data User?

Jul 21, 2011

I'm attempting to write a web service that works only on my LAN and is not accessible via the internet. I need to restart the DHCP service without granting full root access, but I'm having trouble using the [/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart] command. It gives back a failure message that reports nothing:

$ /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart
dhcpd self-test failed. Please fix the config file.
The error was:
$

Looking at the script itself, I found the command its trying to execute, and it came back with this:

$ /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -cf /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf
drop_privileges: could not set group id: Operation not permitted

So I went and changed the dhcp: and dhcpd: AND www-data: in /etc/group so that www-data (The apache user) was part of the group, and still the init.d script wouldn't run.

I would prefer to NOT give passwordless access to the www-data user as I do other web services on this machine, however, giving access to stop my DHCP server is a risk I'm willing to take.

how can I restart the DHCP with apache so I can apply changes?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Wireless To Work At All

Mar 6, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu 9.1 on my Acer Aspire One ZG5 that was previously running Win XP with the wireless working fine. In ubuntu, though, i can't get the wireless to work at all and I don't really even know how to troubleshoot it. I've opened a terminal and used sudo to update various packages, but still nothing. It does appear as though the system recognizes the card since I can configure it, but I'm not keen on playing wi8th the BSSID and MAC address stuff because I just don't have any confidence that it will change my situation. Has anyone had any success with this setup (ubuntu 9.1 and acer one)? Is there a step-by-step wireless troubleshooting/ configuration process that's generic to ubuntu?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Wireless To Work?

Apr 6, 2010

Let me start off by saying that I'm a complete Linux-noob. I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm really enjoying it. I was planning to install it for quite a while now but now that I have my own computer, I actually could make it happen. That being said, it's a whole difference with Windows though and sometimes it's hard to find my way in this new system. My main problem is that I can't seem to get my wireless connection working. From what I've read online this problem is not uncommon with Ubuntu 9.10?

I tried searching for my wireless card drivers in 'System > Administration > Hardware Drivers' but that didn't really work out. It did find a wireless card driver but when I try to activate it, it returns an error message. All the other drivers seem to be installed so I can't really see what the problem is. Can anyone help me with this?BTW, I think I also have a problem with the graphics card driver. When I try to active the 'extra' desktop effects is says this can't be activate. I already tried installing Compiz and the Composite Manager.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Wireless To Work At All?

Aug 4, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a computer I can't get the wireless to work. I looked into it, and I believe the problem is that I don't have the right driver to work with the wireless card, but I wasn't able to tell what my wireless card is properly. And when I got the bcmwl-kernel-source package and installed it, the driver still didn't appear under "hardware drivers". Compounding the problem, I can't use any sudo commands for some reason because when it prompts me to enter the sudo password, the keys other than "enter" don't seem to work. I probably don't have the right information up there.

Ubuntu Networking :: Restarting The System / Wifi Conections Aren't Able To Be Detected?

Jan 3, 2011

I have a problem with my BROADCOM BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN... I made a clean installation of Maverick Meerkat and everything runs perfect except the card drivers... then I investigated almost a week on the net and finally the problem was solved (I made the installation of some drivers on Synaptics tool, then I wrote some codes on the Terminal to activate the light to turn it blue and the Wi-Fi IS ON AND WORKS!).

I thought everything was ok, but when I restarted the laptop, the wifi conections aren't able to be detected so I must re-install the card driver to get it active again :S. I really don't know why the card drivers works only when I install them, because restarting the system make them simply don't work.

I read something about changing my user's state (it was 'personalized') to 'administrator', but nothing happened.I searched on Ubuntu's web but nothing works. It's a Compaq Presario V3000.
