can't access internet. The up and down icon appears by the network connection (upper right hand corner). When I review connection properties, I see that the computer has a valid address, subnet, gatway, dns, etc... But it still can't connect to the internet. I can't ping external addresses either. But I can access internal addresses (local router).

if i'm connected to my wireless network it only gives me internet acces for a few minutes. The connection with my network stays but i have to close it back of and reconnect before i get back online.

im using mandrake linux 2010.0 , and i connected my router cable (dlink) to the computer, and it detects without needing configuration to the 'eth0' and it shows me the ip the dns and gateway, everything ok, but then i go in firefox it says that i couldent connect because theres no internet connection,ive looked at the proxys the firewall, tried to uninstal the eth0, the ppp0 and install then again and still the same,does any one have an idea of what could be?

I've been using my upstairs computer with no problems recently up until this evening, when I rebooted it did an automatic scan of my disks, so I left it to it's thing and when I came back ubuntu had successfully booted, and had seemingly successfully connected to my wireless network as usual.
I've been through the wireless troubleshooting guide, paying special attention to sections 4 and 6 but to no avail, while I'm apparently connected, and have been assigned an IP by my router I'm unable to access anything outside my computer, including the router itself. This happened before, however I solved it by reinstalling ubuntu, and I'd rather not do that again!

I have installed ubuntu 10.04 and STA wireless driver. I am using a wimax modem, the wireless is connected (have IP addresses) but I do not have access to the internet.I also have installed a windows XP as a guest OS (ubuntu is the host) on vmware. By using a bridged network connection, I am able to access internet. So I guess the problem is related to the ubuntu wireless driver.

View 2 Replies View RelatedInstalling from Live USB: Installing from USB on my desktop (used this method for laptop install) goes without a hitch. EXCEPT, I notice there is no support for my wireless card chipset (Atheros 7413, used /bin/lspci to find). I download the drivers for Linux, but I need Make to build the drivers...ok. I download the Make files from my laptop, make coffee, slap the makefiles onto a flash drive and run the configure file on my desktop version of SUSE. Whoops, need a c compiler (odd that openSUSE did not come with gcc? bit confused on that). If you can't tell by now, I've been using linux for less than a month so I am what you would call a noob? After the lack of c compiler, I drove to my office to snag some DVDs to download the DVD iso image, hoping it would have some form of c compiler/make packaged, since the description does say the DVD has more software (can't find any prebuilt versions of either...?)
Installing from DVD: This was my next step. I wrote the iso image to a DVD and proceeded to boot from DVD. The installer fails at the system analysis, saying it cannot "create a repository". writing the iso to a second DVD produces the same result. Googling has not yielded a solution. tl;dr can't use openSUSE on my desktop because my wireless chipset is not suported by SUSE. I need Make to build the drivers, but I need a c compiler to compile Make, and I need the internet to get both for my machine.
I have internet from KabelBW (cable modem which doesnt require any username,password,dns,mac...) they gave me a cisco modem, I connected it with my asus router and it has been working fine since today! when I woke up I turned on my lap top and loged in skype, but I couldnt open google, then I tried yahoo..nothing! I havent made and changes yesterday! I dont know what is wrong! I am new to ubuntu and I dont know what to do! when I connect directly to modem I have internet it works good, but when I connect through my (LAN or Wireless) router I cant view web pages. View 9 Replies View RelatedOn the 25th of January, one of my computers randomly stopped being able to connect to the Internet. It was running a dual boot (Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS & Windows XP SP2), and is connected to the network via an ethernet cable (no wireless). According to the Network Manager, everything is working okay (there was no change from when I was able to access the Internet).
When I would use Firefox, I would get the message "Waiting for (page)...". However, this is not a Firefox only problem, as every program requiring Internet access (e.g. Evolution) is unable to connect to the Internet.
I compared the Internet settings to those of my father's Windows XP SP1 computer, which is able to connect to the Internet. There was no difference, except for the IP Address and Hardware Address. Because of this, I incorrectly deduced that either the actual Ethernet cable or the wall plug was faulty. I tried using a different cable and connecting to the Ethernet wall plug used by the aforementioned computer. Nothing changed. I was still unable to connect.
I didn't worry about it until Tuesday, when my other computer had exactly the same problem. It is running a triple boot between Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP SP2, and I am unable to obtain Internet access using any partition. As with the previous case, my computer showed no change in the Internet settings, and the computer also shows it as being connected to the network. It is also connected via an Ethernet cable.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000, and I installed Ubuntu before and it worked flawlessly until I decided that I had to go back to Win7 because of certain program compatibility issues.I'm back here trying to set it up and am having no issues except for with my wireless. I can see all of the SSID's, I am able to connect to my wireless, and it displays that I have been assigned an IP and all of the other settings given by DHCP.
I have been trying to fix this for hours, googled, searched these forums, and have spent time with some people on the Ubuntu IRC channel and we are unable to come up with a fix.

The strange thing is that although nothing will load when I try to visit facebook.com, google.com, or any other website... I opened the update manager and I noticed that it would download for 30ish seconds, stop and do nothing for 60ish seconds, resume for another 30, stop, resume, etc. until it finished. I am able to ping my router, and 8.8.8.8, but I am unable to ping [URL].
I upgraded to 10.10 the day it came out, and haven't had any problems with internet stuff. My wireless card works without any proprietary drivers. Last night, the computer stopped connecting to the internet. I am still connected to my wifi network, but I can't do anything online. I had assumed that my internet connection was just down in general, and tried resetting the computer, shutting down the computer and then turning it on again, and rebooting the modem, but then my Xbox connected, and my laptop running 10.04 connected, so I'm confused as to what is going in. Any ideas?

I just installed a dualboot win7/F15 on my laptop (dell XPS 15) and everything seems to be working fine except that when I connect to my network it is connected and the network is accessible (I can visit my gateway/ router) but when I try to visit a website it simply never ends loading it.Internet is working on win7 so it isn't my network's fault.Now I found somewhere that updating could help but since I dont have internet I can't update

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with fluxbox installed. Occasionally my internet connection will stop working, but when I check on wifi radar, I'm still connected to the network. The router is not plugged into a computer at the moment, just the cable jack. It is likely a hardware problem however, since my other laptops also experience disconnects. Any help beyond "change the cable" would be greatly appreciated. For instance, even though I am connected to the network, I cannot post at the moment due to lack of internet connection.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can connect to my school's wireless network using the standard network manager, but often (not always) it repeatedly disconnects and reconnects every few minutes. Occasionally it also prompts me for the security information again (even after it previously connected successfully).
By running iwconfig when it's on the fritz, I can see that it's often switching access points for the network - which is what I think is causing the problem. It disconnects and reconnects even when the signal strength for the current AP is fine, and it will often switch to an AP with a weaker signal strength.

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection
I have a wireless network (192.168.1.0) that's bridged to the Internet and a wired one (192.168.0.0) that's only local. When I am connected to both networks, Natty wants to route my Internet traffic through the wired, local-only one.
Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?

Afterwards my computer has no Internet connection although the network manager and the icon on the upper bar says that i am still connected. I tried editing the /etc/rc.local and /etc/resolv.conf as mentioned in other posts in here bit no luck so far.

I've tried with iptables enabled and disabled. selinux is disabled. This server has multiple network interfaces, one public and two private. The public has a WAN IP address (1.1.1.1), the private is 10.1.10.2 and the other private is connected via crossover cable to another server 192.168.100.1. I think route -n tells me the WAN interface is used to access the internet, as its gateway is my ISP's upstream gateway. CentOS 5.5.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHeres the set up I have: one eeepc running ubuntu netbook. with a usb wifi dongle, this is connected to a parabolic antenna i made out of pizza boxes and tin foil. One fujitsu laptop running ubuntu 10.10. the eee connects to the internet via the dongle. then the laptop connects to the eee. I set this up by using network manager. I created a new wirless connection and called it "UbuntuAdhoc". The on-board card connected to this without issue and the laptop was able to connect to the new wireless broadcast by the eees on-board card.
This worked perfectly untill I rebooted the eee. Now the eee is unable to conect to the internet if the on-board caard is conected to "ubuntuadhoc". also the dongle now wants to conect to "ubuntuadhock" too.
I have recently installed ubuntu 9.10. Earlier I had ubuntu 9.04. On that my internet was running perfectly well.After installation I created new connection as I had done for 9.04 version using "Network connections , Edit connections". However, after configuring connection(uname , password etc.) I wasn't able to access Internet.So I tried using "pppoeconf" utility. After using this now whenever I click on network connections applet on top panel , it shows in menu "device not managed".Can somebody point out what went wrong and what to do so as to be able to acess Internet in ubuntu?

It worked a while ago (1/2 year or something) but some update must have messed something up so it doesn't work any longer. Situation: There is a laptop that is running windows 7 and is connected to the internet via cabel. A open ad-hoc network is configuered with sharing of internet connection, status of the ad-hoc network is "waiting for users to connect". I want to connect with a second laptop that is running ubuntu 11.04. I can find the network and connect to it.
