Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Will Not Connect To Any Access Point

I installed it alongside Win XP, using Wubi, and it seems I use Ubuntu 10.04.Everything worked out as expected, and my wired internet connection works like a dream.However:My wireless connection seem a little buggy.I can see all networks (except WPA2) so even if I want to fix the WPA2 problem, I'd rather just open my network for now.
So my network is now open, I see it in the NetworkManager list, and as i try to connect, the following happens:The wireless symbol start flashing. From here it keeps flashing, untill it gives up.I use RT2870 drivers, and D-Link DWA-140 USB wireless adapter.
It goes without saying I am a freshman regarding Linux, so if anyone knows what to do, and cares to take the time to tell me, please do tell me in a detailed manner.I do know the basics of the Terminal, and yes, I do know how to copy/paste commands I find linux way more satisfying than Windows so far ... I just installed the wicd network manager and when i was setting it up it said it couldn't find the ip address so when i input the address its saying it can't connect to a wireless access point. I am using wireless that has worked with the default network manager but will not work with this one.
10.04 in a couple of identical lenovo laptops (of friends) suddenly have stopped connecting successfully to wireless, coinciding approximately with a mains power socket fail at the modem router, now fixed. presumably the machines were trying to connect to the access point, which may or may not have been working, but themodem router was not. Now, internet connection and wireless access point is fixed ok and is back up, and i can connect wirelessly to the access point ok using an eeepc with 10.04.2 with no problem so the access point is working ok
the target laptop/s are still ok via wired ethernet, and can *also* connect to a neighbours open wireless (a british telecom so called fon network, it asks for an account password), and all local wireless networks can be seen normally, and the home access point ssid can also be seen ok. so the aptop wireless is connecting ok, but not to this particular access point now. maybe someting has got screwed up? it is wpa2 and when clicked, after a long-ish time, the authentication is requested, then given, correctly, and still not connecting, asks for authentication again etc etc. no local secure wallet is being used.
when upgrading these laptops for my friend some time ago from 9.04 i have a small recall that 10.04 had a odd thing with wireless authentication (?) bug? i have deleted the network connections gui listing for this ssid and restarted the laptop, still no joy.
I have an Intel PRO 2200BG wireless card and can connect to my router when logging in via gdm (using Xubuntu.) No problems there, connection never drops, very reliable!
But I've since had the need to shutdown X and keep a simple terminal instance open but as soon as I stop gdm the connection to the router drops. Trying to connect via the terminal using wpa_supplicant has so far been unsuccessful.
I know for a fact I'm doing something wrong, just don't know what and would appreciate some help!
I am using OpenSUSE 11.2. Knetworkmanager seems to connect to AP with the highest signal most of the times(even after choosing others from the scan list). But I want to connect to another AP which has a lower signal but lesser number of users. how to ALWAYS connect to a specific AP(I know the address of the AP) using the command line or some other method.
I have a complicated situation due to my goals and network structure. I have in mind a potential solution, a bridge, but I do not know whether it is feasible or what hardware it will require.
My apartment community provides residents with free Internet access through an ancient T1 line. We do not have the option of other Internet providers, so having a router and modem in the home are not an option. The T1 line is split among some 24 switches, one for each building, and each switch has one port per floor. At each floor, there is a D-link WAP, and each has a separate SSID and WEP key. Additionally, they control access at the switch level using Access Control.
I'm used to being in control of my networked environment. I like to have friends over often, and most of them have a laptop, a smart phone, or both, which makes Access Control a pain. I don't want to have to think ahead and get their MAC addresses to the IT consultant while he's here during business hours. My wife and I have 6 devices, two of which require an Ethernet connection. I use a few applications for streaming that utilize UDP (I'm not sure if the WAPs are smart enough to even handle this) and I don't like having my traffic muddled with my neighbors.
I should note that I tried extending the network with my Airport Extreme router, which apparently only works with other Apple devices. I've also looked into WDS, but that seems to require an unlikely amount of cooperation from the IT consultant on site.
The potential solution: a Linux server that acts as a router. Ideally, it could act as a webserver for a small static site as well, but let's focus on the routing. I'd like to bridge two NICs and use masquerading (Internet Connection Sharing). The public interface would connect to the WAP using WEP. The private interface would allow up to 8 devices to connect to the server.
It seems easy enough to configure the public interface, and even to bridge the connections. What I've never done before is purchase a wireless card that can accept multiple clients. Maybe they can all do this?
I am quite new in Linux and start trying by using Fedora. I installed Fedora 10 on an old PC. I installed once and Fedora 10 recognized my wireless USB finger. Well after some setting but I cannot recall teh exact details. Due to certain reasons, I have to re-install Fedora 10. However, this time the wireless device is not working (The system recognized it and the driver is working ok but not able to connect to the access point and I caanot find a place to check the available wireless network list. I used WEP password protection so need to see the network list and select the network for prompt of the password entry.)

I'm able to configure my Wireless network to connect with an AP with WEP key but...
Now I'm at home, I've a WPA2 key (my router now is supporting both, WPA and WPA2). I used WICD to connect but no success at all! It just stops with "Connection failed: Could not contact the wireless access point"

Install Fedora 12 on my laptop and having problem connecting to access point using WEP . I complied with wireless setup with key but will not connect. Works with security disable, the router is a Westell 327W from what was Bellsouth.
I have a Sonicwall access point, which I am able to set up through the interface, but after that I am unable to achieve a connection through my wireless card. I have a good understanding of everything involved, but really have no hands on experience when it comes to networking.
Also, I should have mentioned that @ the interface for the Sonicwall it said that "no DNS server had been specified", but I set it up for DHCP, and I thought my ISP is using PPPoE (which I also thought used DHCP).

I also have a second problem, which is that I want to use WebMin to manage this server, but I cannot figure out how to get the ADSL client module configured -- RP-PPPoE version 3. It seems to expect to work with pppoe-start, pppoe-stop, and pppoe-status, but when I try to run pppoe-status it says "Link is down", even though my ppp connection is actually working.Is is possible to use the WebMin ADSL client module with Ubuntu? I spent a lot of time trying to get pppoe-start, stop, etc. working but it was a complete mess and never seemed to behave. Finally, I just put the ppp startup commands into the /etc/network/interfaces file and that worked, but now the pppoe-* commands no longer seem to function.
I'm going to be working in an office with no wifi and no 3g signal but my laptop will be connected to the web via a wired network.Any way I can use the wifi card in my ubuntu laptop to create a wireless access point so my phone can connect? Would have to be easily selected and deselected as I'd then want to use wifi to connect to the internet at home.
I'd like to create a wireless network so that I can connect my iPhone to the internet. I made a new network, the iPhone sees the network and apparently connects, but Safari doesn't work. It doesn't work with the default settings, and I don't know what to put in the fields. Could anyone give me a small tutorial?
I am in a situation at the moment which means I am going to be without an ISp for a week or two, and I can't survive that long without the intenet!!! I have configured my router to behave like a wireless access point. I'm using hostapd as the utility to manage the access point. I am able to connect to the access point from my android phone.Now i need to send a file to the android phone from the access point.
OK, what I want to do, I think is possible but I dont kno name of it or how 2 do it under even windows for that matter. I have my current PC connected via Ethernet directly to my house router. Now on this Motherboard, I also have a wireless nic that I have no plans on usin. Can I turn it in2 an access point/wifi for other devices like iPods, Wii, Labtops, ect?Also, how would I do it if not Wifi, use the other Ethernet port to plug up say a labtop. In which the labtop uses the net I am getting from the router?
i ahve just installed fedora 11 kde edition and i used to use fedora 10 after finish installation i edit the connectons to connect to my network im in lan network but i connect my cable to an access point to free using my laptop anywhere after adding every thing (wep key ,static ip's,) as i used to do and i have the connected sign at the system tray.i open the browser but no internet connection pinging the gateway returns "Destination Host Unreachable".
I have a laptop with Fedora installed and an iPad.The only connection to internet in my house is wireless router. It has strong signal to catch it with laptop in every corner in my house, but not strong enough for an iPad..Since my iPad is mostly near my laptop, I'd like make my laptop to be turned to wireless repeater or that serves as access point so I can connect to network with an iPad.How can I do that from my Fedora machine?
I started using Arch just a few days ago. forward traffic to the Wireless access point I created on arch. i am using cable internet (ppp0) which I want to share via a usb wifi adapter running as a WAP. I followed the instructions in this link to enable the AP mode. Afterwards I followed the instructions provided in the Arch Wiki to forward the traffic but because of my inexperience I am still unable to connect to the internet. I have Ubuntu command line only installed on my HTPC (it is XBMC Live installation). Kernel is 2.6.31-16-generic. My wi-fi card is AW-NE770 from AzureWave (mini-pci on Zotac Atom motherboard). I have successfully configured wireless connection to my router. Unfortunately, after short period of time connection drops. When I restart /etc/network/interfaces all goes back to normal. When connection is dropped, iwconfig shows that access point is not assigned. I have already tried installing backport drivers, removing security on the network (WEP and WPA), assigning static IP or using DHCP. Nothing works. I know it is not the router or my internet because I can be at the same time on my laptop and that works fine.
I have a windows 7 (64bit sadly) desktop computer with no wireless capability. Now before I go out and spend money on a wireless usb thing, I was wondering if I could use my laptop (Ibm think pad T60 running ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with crunch bang) As a wireless access-point and connect via Ethernet cable the laptop to the desktop (Probably through a modem?) so I can use the Internet for games on the desktop computer. (Games that wont work in wine, sigh). Just a note though, 64 bit windows 7 will NOT run anything.
I'm trying to make my F10 Laptop a wireless Access point.
When I 'iwconfig wlan1 mode Master' I get: SET failed on wlan1; Invalide argument.
wlan1 is a Netgear WG111v2 which worked as soon as I plugged it in after I installed F10. I don't know is it not supported? What is? Is there a different driver I can put on that will work in master mode.
I'm new to Linux and I have a problem with the Wireless connection.I've already searched for this problem but found so many threads it was impossible to sort it out.I've just installed Fedora 13 (Live CD - Install to Hard Drive) and apparently it's kinda... "empty". But my problem is with the wireless connection. There is a free network provided by my city for all the citizens. It is Open (authentication) for all. The problem is I can't "see" the network in Feodra. In Windows 7 I can "see" it just fine with 3 bars signal strength. It is great for surfing and emails. It is not intended for heavy downloading.
Why can't I "See" this network? There is another weird thing. The neighbor above me has a Wireless access point closed of course but I get 44% signal strength in Fedora and Full bars in Windows. Does it have to do anything? Maybe the low signal of the free network is the problem and Fedora makes it disappear completely?
