Ubuntu Networking :: No Ethernet Connection Recognized - No Such Device

Jun 17, 2010

I just installed 10.04 on my new netbook and I am suprised to see that the ethernet is not recognized. When I run

Code:

ifconfig eth0

the result is

Code:

no such device

The machine was working fine before I installed Ubuntu. I am suprised to see this problem as I have already installed it on a few machines without any problem such as this.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Lan Port On The Computer Seems To Not Be Activiating As No Wired Connection Is Recognized

Oct 6, 2010

while my brother was browsing the web on my windows partition he had a blue screen pop up, one of the soft/hardware error ones, not a true BSOD, anyways, ever since my lan port on the computer seems to not be activiating as no wired connection is recognized. The lan port/card is directly attached to the Mother Board, it's a gigabyte motherboard in a self-build computer. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to troubleshoot this and see if it is truly a hardware problem or if its something else.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Port Not Recognized?

Jul 27, 2011

I am running 11.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 (the first gen.). I was using my Ethernet port to connect to the internet until about two weeks ago - suddenly the system no longer recognised that port even existed and just kicked me offline. I am able to get online now with a wireless card (replaced the broadcom card, that was a whole different can of worms...).

why my system is unable to connect with the Ethernet port? If I plug in the cable nothing happens.

Ubuntu Networking :: VMWare Workstation 7 On 9.10 - Can't Find Ethernet Device

Aug 29, 2010

I just upgraded to VMWare workstation 7. I was previously running v.6, and an older linux version, and everything was working fine. I moved over the same VM files to the new computer, and it doesn't find the ethernet connection. When I start up the virtual machine, I get an error message:

Could not connect Ethernet0 to virtual network "/dev/vmnet8". More information can be found in the vmware.log file.

There log file doesn't say much more:

Jan 07 17:31:36.928: vcpu-0| VNET: MACVNetPortOpenDevice: Ethernet0: can't open vmnet device (No such device or address)
Jan 07 17:31:36.928: vcpu-0| VNET: MACVNetPort_Connect: Ethernet0: can't open data fd

[code]....

Once xp has booted, I get the "new hardware" wizard, saying that it found an ethernet adapter. However, it can't find any driver for it. I think this dialog started appearing after I added a new virtual network entry using the "Virtual Network Editor". Originally I didn't even have a /dev/vmnet8 file. Now I do.

Networking :: Ethernet Interfaces - Device Activated On Reboot

Dec 28, 2010

The ethernet configuration files are under
"/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts" such as "ifcfg-eth0:1" etc.

The file looks as follow:
Code:
DEVICE="eth0:1"
BOOTPROTO="static"
ONBOOT=no
IPADDR="172.23.17.10"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
ALIAS="yes"

I've set the ONBOOT=no. This means this device should not be activated at boot-time. But as I reboot the machine, this device is activated again. This means the option ONBOOT doesn't work. Seems this is a bug of RedHat LINUX?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Ethernet Connection In 10.04?

May 11, 2010

I installed 10.04 today, and I can't get any connection through the LAN. I've tried some stuff on my own, but I've been unsuccessful so far. It's not a hardware or connection issue, as it works perfectly fine in Windows 7. I haven't had this issue in any previous version of Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter).The weirdest part is I booted from the installation CD as as LiveCD, and everything worked perfectly fine. It only stops working after I actually install it. Here's the results of ifconfig:

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi USB Not Recognized - No Internet Connection

Apr 21, 2010

I've been having 2 issues with my internet connection on ubuntu for as long as I can remember, I've tried updates but they haven't seemed to work so great and am pretty fed up with this. So I have a Netgear wg111t wireless usb dongle which I got working through ndiswrapper. The 2 issues I am having are:

1. After a random period of time my internet just decides to disconnect, the strange thing is the bars at the top still say I'm connected. The only way to get the internet working again is to turn the pc off and on. Another way I have experienced this happening is usually when I'm downloading something off a torrent.
2. After restarting my pc the wifi usb isn't recognised and I can't connect to the internet.

Ubuntu Networking :: (wired) Internet Connection Not Recognized In 10.04?

Nov 4, 2010

I've just installed the 64 bit 10.04 onto my new netbook, with ample specs to run the full desktop version rather than the stripped down netbook version. My only problem (at the moment) is that my wired internet connection is not recognized within the operating system, yet while I was downloading/installing Ubuntu it had no problem finding and using the connection then. When I boot into Windows 7 or plug the ethernet cable into my Mac, the connection is established immediately, and no need for manual entering of anything because everything is auto-detected. The really strange thing is I've run Ubuntu off a USB stick and when booting off that the wired connection was immediately recognized after startup.

Networking :: New Ethernet Connection On Old (gutsy) Ubuntu?

Jul 23, 2010

i've just got a new broadband/wireless connection from Virgin Media and am trying to get this very old laptop online. in the past, cable connections have been easy, and wireless has given issues, but this time its the opposite. so, i have a new cable connection that is all plugged in. called customer support, they have no support for linux as usual, but they 'manually activated' the modem and thats all they can do. i am not trying to setup the wireless network yet, i'll do that with a pc later, for now i just want to plug in and go. on Network Settings, i have set the wired connection to dhcp. thats what i've done before ... not sure if i need to get static addresses from the ISP? i can go online now using the erratic but generous neighborhood free wireless.

ifconfig -a gives:

Code:

Networking :: Increase Storage Space Of Server With NAS/DAS Device Via Gigabit Ethernet?

Feb 8, 2010

Cost effective (the people want cheap) solution to increase server storage space with as little impact on throughput (what I want) as possible. I have a server that sends instructions to 20 clients to perform certain tasks. The clients send gigs of data back to the server for storage.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Network: Gigabit Ethernet
Clients: (20) HP, Solaris, Linux
Linux Server: Dell R805 PowerEdge (QUAD Core Athlons 16 gigs of ram, 4 gigabit ports.

Selected directories are mounted (NFS) by clients. One directory to be mounted by the clients contains executable files. Mount commands are sent from the server (rsh) to the clients. Yes I know (ssh) but this is how the software was originally written so let's go with it.

The clients then receive commands to execute the binaries contained within the mounted directory. The binaries basically create an image of the clients filesystem including special applications. The client then sends the files and directories to the server which stores this image. This process can be reversed to restore a client to the initial baseline image.

In a nut shell, 20 clients are sending gigs of data to the server for storage. I need to attach a NAS (gigabit) to extend the storage capability of the server. The server would mount (NFS) to the hard drives on the NAS. The NAS, configured as a direct attached storage device (DAS), means the storage device is connected directly to the server and not the network (which makes it a DAS). This would provide direct storage expansion for the server. However, this configuration cannot be a bottleneck that significantly hinders performance.

Clients <---data---->Server<----storage---->DAS/NAS

1) Will a low end NAS (gigabit port) work? (NetGear 1TB ReadyNAS Duo, RND2110-100NAS) or something with a higher rated throughput (QNAP TS-239 Pro II)

2) Low end won't work, go with ?

3) Does the processor on the NAS play any role that would determine the performance of this configuration given that the server would mount directly to a directory on this device (DAS/NAS)?

Ubuntu Networking :: Looking To Share Internet Connection Through Ethernet

Aug 5, 2011

After some fiddling around, I have come to the conclusion my current wifi access point hates my other computer's Broadcom chip or the drivers thereof. So, my current idea is as follows. I would like to use my netbook to connect to the wireless network, and then connect my other computer to it through ethernet. My netbook is dual boot XP and Ubuntu (think Ubuntu is a version behind) and I would be fine to set up this sharing in either and just leave it on as a repeater station. My other computer is dual boot XP and Fedora and I would prefer this work to allow me to have network in both. I have a straight-through cable and have verified that my network card supports the automatic crossing over behavior.

Networking :: Testing The Ethernet Connection Continuously?

Nov 2, 2009

My program is working. However, I would like to add in some features. Let see my code first

Code:

if (returnresult<=0)
{
printf("Connecting....
");

[code]....

When the ethernet network connected, it will go into the else loop at line no. 13. The system will send status and display the status at control panel screen. If at this point, the ethernet disconnected, it will go back to the if loop at line 1. The system will keep trying to connect to the network and keep loop the if loop until it is connected.

Question now is I need the system to test the connection too after going into the operation loop that is start from the line no. 47. If the system went into the for (int c=0;c<cCOL;c++), it will need to do all the operations as indicated by cCOL times before it exit that loop and go into the previous loop.

I need the system to detect connection everytime an operation is going to happen or ended and if there is no connection, it will trying to connect. Before it is connected, it will not continue the operations. I tried to put the function "Connect (szPort, szAddress)" into each loop. Yes, the operation stop everytime the network disconnected. However, it shows on control panel screen "New Connection...." everytime it execute the statement. In fact, the network never disconnected.

I tried to look at the Connect function code, it is as below, I cannot figure out any statement that can stop the appearance of that "New Connection...". It may be hidden at the library source code, it is too hard for a beginner to modify the library code.

Code:

int Connect (char *szPort, char *szAddress)
{
/* Set the remote port */
int port; /* port number */
