Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection Sharing : 3G/4G USB Dongle And Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router?

Jan 1, 2011

I have internet access through 3G/4G USB dongle direct into my Ubuntu 10.04 box. Works great! Now I would like to share this connection out through my Netgear WGR614 wireless (and wired) router. Any clues? I've tried the simple (GUI) instructions using Network Manager, but just can't seem to get it right. Previously, I had DSL and this plugged nicely into the WGR614 and internet and ethernet access was had by all. Now, I'm a bit confused on how to get the sharing (ethernet and wireless) between my Ubuntu box and the wired/wireless network while at the same time getting Internet access to all through the Ubuntu box.

Networking :: Can Use Nautilus Or Terminal For LAN File Sharing Through Netgear Modem Router?

Mar 19, 2011

For my broadband Internet I have several computers connected by cable to a Netgear DG834Gv5 router which has its own firewall.I have the wireless turned off by choice. My desktop and laptop are Linux only. (Ubuntu lucid lynx) I use the same username and password (very strong password) on both. What I want to know is can I set things up so I can browse and copy files between the computers using say nautilus on either computer?if not nautilus then I would happy to be able to do the same via a terminal window.I am not necessarily wanting to be told how but either what to Google for or where to find it.

Networking :: Setting Up Linux Box As IPv6 Router To Replace Netgear WNR1000 Wireless Router?

Jun 18, 2011

I want to set up a Linux box as a wireless router to replace our existing Netgear WNR1000 router, as I believe the Netgear does not support the coming IPv6 protocol. Unfortunately, it is not flashable with OpenWRT or DD-WRT presently.

As we have Comcast, our cable modem acts as a dumb modem according to the customer support guy I talked to, and our router is the one that asks for the IP address from DHCP. Thus, when Comcast switches over to IPv6, I don't believe my existing router would work, correct?

My idea is to take a Linux box and put two NICs and a wireless adapter in it, using IPCop or Smoothwall to set up a router. I could then enable IPv6 support for when we have IPv6 with Comcast. Is that possible? Would there be a way to get BIND to hand out private IP addresses in the same subnet on the both the LAN NIC and the wireless card?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Wired Internet Connection To Wireless

Aug 29, 2010

For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.

- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Sharing Via Wireless Adhoc Connection

Nov 3, 2010

I am trying to establish an adhoc connection in my ubuntu 10.10 and share my cable internet throughout this connection with my Android phone. I have read some guides but I couldn't be successful. (I have another windows mobile, and it couldn't connect too). I have installed Firestarter in order to enable internet sharing. My main Problem is that, no one can obtain IP adress from the adhoc connection, whether Firestarter is active or not. What should I do in order to make the other devices gain IP address from this connection. If I have to set static IP what should I do exactly?

Same problem for the Apple Macs in the house. We called Dlink. The fix for a Mac was to add DNS servers (4.2.2.2) under TCP/IP But there doesn't seem to be anywhere to specify a DNS server in Ubuntu.

I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Router - Netgear DG834 - Connection Often Being Dropped

Jul 12, 2010

I have a Netgear DG834 ADSL router (v3) which I have used for a couple of years. Prior to that I had a v2 of the same router, but upgraded for the one that supports ADSL 2+ (here in the UK).

Recently I have been having problems with the connection often being dropped, and when I access 192.168.0.1 for the router admin page, when it is not working I get no IP address listed for that of the ISP's server, and sometimes as well the upstream and downstream speeds are listed as 0 kbps.

Usually this was resolved by rebooting the router.

However, for the last couple of days, when using Ubuntu 9.04, the page of the router at 192.168.0.1 will not load. I have tried numerous different browsers, and none of them will give the router admin page.

When I tried booting from a live CD of Fedora 13, the router admin page came up just fine, no problems (although still not getting a proper connection to the Internet).

I was going to try to use the older router I had, but so far, as I cannot access the router admin page in Ubuntu, I have not done so (not had the time, and now I am at work posting this).

So there must be a problem in Ubuntu that is preventing it showing the router's admin page. The Network connection details show that the router has given the PC an IP address of 192.168.0.6 and the DNS servers are listed, so I know that Ubuntu is talking to the router, but it is not allowing me to access its settings in any way.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing 3G Mobile Broadband Dongle Over Wireless

Jan 18, 2011

I had previously been sharing my ethernet connection over wireless using Hostapd & dnsmasq on my headless server as this tutorial shows: here which had been working fine. I now wish to share my USB mobile broadband over the wireless. I using a ZTE MF112. I was able to get the connection working using the application wvdial.
- Firstly I had to create a hard link between /dev/gsmodem & /dev/modem
- wvdial then made a new connection ppp0 which would work for internet access.

Changing the interfaces to have the br0 port like so:
Code:
iface br0 inet static
address 192.168.1.1
network 192.168.1.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
bridge-ports eth1 ppp0 wlan0
Flushing the IPTables & then adding:

Code:
iptables -A FORWARD -i br0 -s 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp0 -d 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -j ACCEPT
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE

Doing so works fine, but I'm not entirely sure how to make this all automated. I could try making a script to launch, but I don't have a huge amount of experience writing scripts. Is wvdial the best application to use? Keeping in mind I'm using a headless server. I use Squeezebox server & the scrobbling didn't seem to be able to connect to last.fm. Do I need to specify which connection Squeezebox uses?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing 3g Connection On 10.04 And Vista Via Router?

May 28, 2010

i'm totally new to Linux and Ubuntu. I own a huawei 3g modem through which I connect to the internet. I plan to share the internet from that connection between my Vista pc and another pc running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. The computer I plan to use to share the internet, let me call it Server, is equalling running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. My Server perfectly recognises my modem and connects to the internet using it and I can browse.

I plan to connect the routers internet port to my Server using my servers network card. Then i intend to let the router do the sharing of the internet to the other computers on its own. I don't have any idea how to go about doing this. Originally, I tried a direct connection between my Server and the other pc running Lucid Lynx without bothering with the router and using the following settings which i found on an online tutorial:

Server ip 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
and no gateway
then on the client
client ip 192.168.0.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
I used open DNS servers for the DNS

However, i was unable to browse the internet from the client even though a connection between the two was established. Then I thought to myself, why go through this trouble, I have a router so why not go ahead and use it. But then I do not know how to do that. Using the router will enable me to effortlessly connect all my computers irrespective of operating system and ease the network creation process.

Ubuntu Servers :: DHCP Connection Sharing - Connected To The Internet Via Wireless?

Dec 29, 2010

I did search, but could not find a solution.Right I've installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 on an old machine, installed fine and the system is running. I have a windows 7 desktop that is connected to the internet via wireless. The desktop then has an ethernet connection which is shared to the ubuntu server. The network looks like this.

Modem > Router > Desktop > Switch > Ubuntu Server My problem here is that there appears to be no connection from the server to the desktop. The server cannot connect to the internet.

When i ifconfig the ubuntu machine shows.eth0 link encap:Ethernetinet address: 192.168.137.2 Bcast:192.168.137.255 Mask 255.255.255.0 However on the windows desktop (the machine sharing the internet) these are the details for the connection to ubuntu server.ip 169.254.170.50 mask 255.255.255.0

is this a dhcp problem? is my server configured wrong?

Networking :: Internet Connection Sharing In Ubuntu

Mar 5, 2009

A friend of mine is trying to setup internet connection sharing in Ubuntu, which is something I've never dealt with before. Here's the situation:One desktop PC is dual-booting Ubuntu and Vista. This box is connected wirelessly to the router and can access the internet just fine. The desired setup is to have an xbox360 connected (wired) to the desktop PC, allowing it to share the internet connection.

1) A crossover cable would need to be used between the desktop PC and the xbox.
2) The xbox would still have the router's internal IP as the default gateway (I have zero experience configuring networking on an xbox... I hope these options are easily available).
3) The internal IPs can all be on the same network (i.e. router = 192.168.1.1 ; desktop = 192.168.1.100 ; xbox = 192.168.1.101)
4) IP forwarding would need to be enabled on the Ubuntu host

Is there anything I'm overlooking or just oversimplifying, or should that just about do it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection Sharing Via Firestarter?

Feb 5, 2010

At my home I am using firestarter to connect my XBOX 360 to the internet and it works perfectly, never crashes etc and I get a moderate NAT which I've never experienced any problems in having.

I have my devices set up like this

eth0 - ifconfig eth0 192.168.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.2.255
XBOX - 192.168.2.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.255 gateway 192.168.2.1

This configuration works perfectly on my router at my house which has the IP of 192.168.0.1

However at my friends house he has a router with the IP adress of 192.168.2.10 or 192.168.2.7*, I don't remember exactly but I'll find out tonight. I have tried changing my IP settings on my xbox and eth0 to no avail. I noticed instantly that the XBOX IP is the same as my friends router. what the new settings would be, or simply changing the router's IP.

However there is also an issue with the DNS servers. I can't find them anywhere on the router or on the router box itself. I heard that I could point it towards my default gateway however.
