Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection Dying If It's Idle

Jan 23, 2011

I'm using BSNL 3G USB datacard in India. After connecting to internet, if I leave without browsing, the connection is dying. But if I'm running any downloads in the background, it's staying alive. I'm facing more of this problem when I'm using Ubuntu. And if I'm browsing the download speed received is less than the speed received while downloading using a download manager.

Ubuntu :: Internet Connection Breaks When Idle?

Aug 9, 2010

I ve been a loyal fan of RedHat Linux for last 5 years.I switched to Ubuntu just few days back.Let me tell you, I ve already started loving it.However I m facing few issues while downloading from the Net.While downloading some softwares from the net using 'Package Manager' or 'BitTorrent Client' or directly through Firefox, I m getting the following error if my computer remains Idle for around 20-30 minutes.Error Says, Check your internet Connectivity'.I then need to Redial to connect to Internet.I never faced this issue in RedHat or Windows.I use to put my machine to download for the entire night and never faced connectivity problem.Where as if the computer is not idle and I m hitting keyboard keys, the download happens smoothly. It seems like some thread is checking my status. and if my status is Idle its disconnecting the net

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Internet Dying And Computer Freezing On Unplug Of Usb

Jun 8, 2011

I am currently using opensuse to run a server, however I am experiencing some difficulties. Every once in a while, and I mean completely randomly. This will occur out of no where, and then not happen for five days, then occur twenty times in a row. What happens is the computer runs fine, and all is well but suddenly it wont connect to the internet. All applications are fine and everything is working. It isn't frozen, just won't load webpages. I am using a belkin 111v2 wireless g adapter and it usually works fine.

So when the internet freezes, if I unplug any usb the computer freezes. The mouse stops moving and the keyboard won't respond. The caps lock light won't even turn on. However the laser on the mouse is on, but the computer won't respond. Its like its shutting off the usb hubs. The only thing to do is force shut it off and restart until i no longer have the problem. Sometimes it helps if I open it and re-seat the ram, but that gets old. Does anyone have a solution?

Networking :: Use The Laptop With The Wireless Connection To Share The Internet Connection?

Feb 4, 2010

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection: 'Work Offline' - "No Network Connection"

Oct 31, 2010

I have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.

The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:

Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 001:aa0:91:a7:51
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets: 0 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier: 0
collisons: 0 txqueulen: 1000
RX bytes: 0 (0.0 B) TX bytes: 0 (0.0 B)

If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Networking - Connection Works But No Internet

Jun 1, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.

Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

The output of some terminal commands are below.

However a pint to that ip address (my router) is successful.

Hosts.allow and hosts.deny are both fine (not blank but no entries)

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection Keeps Going Off?

Jun 17, 2011

OS is Ubuntu 10.04. I have HomePNA-connection which is converted to Ethernet by Netsys NH-300 HomePNA-Ethernet adapter.

The problems that I have: Sometimes when I boot I don't get IP from DHCP. If try to ping any address I am told that host is unreachable. Sometimes this I can get IP by using command dhlient -r and dhclient to request new ip. Sometimes only way to get my connection to work is booting the computer.

Sometimes the connection works fine from the start but disconnects later for short time. Sometimes this happens every ten minutes, sometimes less often. If I wait for a while the connection might start working again, if not dhclient -r or reboot helps usually. But not always.

Fedora Networking :: Wired Networking Not Connecting In 12 With Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

Jan 16, 2011

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.

Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Fedora Networking :: Networking - Connect To The Internet Using BSNL Broadband Connection

Mar 6, 2010

I have installed fedora 12 recently. after installation i tried to connect to the internet using BSNL broadband connection. I filled in the details such as IP, Netmask, Gateway and even DNS servers. In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.

There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Network Or Internet Connection When Using KDE

Jan 18, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the default setup (Gnome I think) and on my Gateway Notebook using a wireless connection. It appears to be working great and I can even see my Windows drives and network storage on my home office systems.I have also set it up to run my favorite Bible software on Windows running under VirtualBox. I then installed the KDE Desktop so that I can select either desktop when logging on.

However, once I am in the KDE desktop, I cannot connect to the internet. I have checked and double-checked and the wireless settings seem to be the same on both the Gnom and KDE Desktops but still no network or internet connection when using KDE. I might mention that I am using the 64 Bit version of Ubuntu.

I've just installed Ubuntu 10 as a last resort to save my laptop from the bin. However, I'm having similar issues to when I installed 9.x a few months back. First off, I have no network connection at all (using another laptop just now). I've plugged in the network cable from the modem and although it looks to be doing something, it doesn't establish a connection. The wireless is also not connected due to Firmware not installed. I remeber this was a common issue with the Broadcom 43xx modem but I need to get the wired network going first to be able to download drivers *I think*.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Use Internet Connection With 10.10 And 10.04

Nov 21, 2010

recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. Everything seems to be working fine on the installation except I have never been able to connect to the internet (I'm on mac connected to the same linksys router at the moment). I've been working on this for several days and have exhausted all the possible causes. Here is my setup.

My setup:

-I have tried running both 10.10 and 10.04 (I have 10.04 installed at the moment)

-I have windows xp on a separate hard drive on the same computer and the internet works fine when I boot in windows

-I have tried both automatic DHCP (which my windows uses) and manually connecting to my network under the IPv4 settings

-my "Connection Information" info under networks manager has all the correct information listed as far as my driver, IP address, Bcast, mask, DNS serves are concerned (except I don't know what 'default route' is for so I can't verify that that is correct.)

-my ethernet connection is wired connection that is connected to a linksys router

-my ethernet driver is sis190

-I can ping my router successfully, but I cannot ping anything (i.e. websites) on the other side of my router
