Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To External USB Hard Disc?

Aug 30, 2010

I have a few computers all connected to the same router both wireless and wired. All at the moment are running Ubuntu. There is no problem sharing any of these computer's local drives through the network. However I have one desktop with an external USB Hard disc plugged into it. I would like to share this external hard disc on the network. I set it up to share but when I try and access it from one of the other computers on the network, although it shows up, I get the message "Unable to mount location. Failed to mount windows share".

From Ubuntu I know the two commands:

What are the corresponding cmds in CentOS?

Ubuntu :: Wireless And External Hard Drive Not Connecting

Aug 17, 2010

I am running the latest Ubuntu on a partition with windows 7 as my main OS. I got my wireless drivers installed and it seems to pick up on all the wireless networks, whenever i try to connect to mine it tires and then fails and asks for the password again, even though its definatly the right password for my wireless.

I am also having trouble connecting to my external hard drive, i am completely new with Linux and would appreshiate -retard proof- tutorials if you need me to run anything, and such. Its fully updated and drivers are up to date (apparently) so i cant understand what is wrong.

Hardware :: Test Integrity Of External Hard Drive / Without Removing It And Connecting With SATA To Motherboard?

Jul 28, 2009

I have a seagate SATA hard drive that was running a mythtv distro. It had 3 partitions, EXT3, swap, and XFS. I started having I/O errors on boot and saw error messages on both the EXT3 and the XFS partitions. I also heard some clunking sounds on the drive when it was reading, so I thought hell, the drive is dead.

I have since replaced the drive and everything is back up and running on the replacement drive. I thought hell, the seagate drive is toast, but I just want to verify it with some sort of tool. I have the hard drive in a Vantec NexStar external hard drive case (SATA->USB) and found there was a tool called badblocks. Ran badblocks on it, which ran for 24ish hours and found no bad blocks. I also didn't notice any clunking sounds while it was running.

I ran
Code:
badblocks -n -v /dev/sdb
Is badblocks a proper test to run on external hard drives or was I just wasting my time? Is there any way that I can really test it without removing it and connecting it with SATA to the motherboard?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Can't Find Grub Without Disc / Boot From Hard Disc

Jan 1, 2011

I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.

I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home

There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

Fedora Networking :: Sharing An External Hard Drive Using Samba?

Aug 9, 2011

I installed Fedora 15 5 days ago after using debian-based distros for a few years, and until now I've had the habit of sharing many files (mostly multimedia) on my home network, except since I'm the only one using Linux, I have to do it using Samba. In Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Linux Mint, this worked like a charm.

Two things have changed this week: I switched to Fedora 15 like I said before, and I bought a new USB external HDD. I previously used a 500 GB Western Digital, and changed for a 1.5 TB SAMSUNG which is linked to my station via USB. The drive works well and I cp'd the 450 gigs of the ancient drive within the new one without a problem.

Ever since I managed to set up fedora and GNOME 3 as I would like it, I've been trying to setup the network sharing via Samba, and that's a genuine 4-day long headache now.Thing is, yesterday, it worked. After setting everything right, creating an automount of the external HDD in a maybe-too-much permissive folder, allowing Samba through the firewall, getting to know that buddy called SELinux I had never met before and which I struggled to tame ; after setting everything up, it worked seamlessly, I streamed music from the Windows PCs of my network and began watching a film.

Except I had a problem which had nothing to do with Linux: letting the USB drive plugged in on startup prevented the BIOS phase from going well, and my station was stuck on my motherboard splashscreen. To fix this, I had to disable the USB Legacy in my BIOS. Did the trick. Yesterday night, I rebooted like that, and everything was fine. This morning, Fedora wouldn't boot. Since the new BIOS parameters didn't switch the drive on on startup, fstab was trying to mount a drive which wasn't there, and thus crashed, switching to emergency mode.Had to remove the ftsab line concerning the USB drive for Fedora to boot again.

Alrite, that's fixed, I thought ; I just changed the fstab options adding noauto, user, etc. and I thought it would be ok, but it ain't.It's now been 3 hours without me finding any clue as to how to get this working.

IMO, the problem comes from the fact that Samba is missing the right to access the drive. Samba seems to be OK: from the Windows station I can see my Linux station on the network map, I can access it entering the Smbuser I created for this, and the "ext-hdd" dir is present (that's the alias I used in the Samba config files), but when I try to access it, Windows says it can't access it.

I'll try to add as many pieces of information as possible that might be useful:

SELinux config:

Code:
[norfen@norfens-station ~]$ getsebool -a | grep samba
samba_create_home_dirs --> on
samba_domain_controller --> on
samba_enable_home_dirs --> off
code....

General :: Data Recovery From External NTFS Disc?

Mar 19, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and am trying to use it to recover data from a failed External HDD (NTFS).

The drive failed with an accompanying smell of electric burning and subsequently was not recognised by Windows. It would recognice the enclosure, but told me that the drive had to be reformatted.

I removed the drive from the external enclosure and hooked it up to my PC with a power cable and USB to SATA connector. I can mount the drive in Ubuntu (eventually) and I've learned enough about BASH to navigate through the files on the drive.

Those that I can access I am able to copy across to my internal drive (VERY slowly, but it does do it) but a lot of the directories show up with an Input/output Error when I run the ls -l command.

Is there any way for me to be able to access these files or to recover them? Should I be trying a different technique rather than just attempting to access and copy the files?

Ubuntu Installation :: New 10.10 Won't Boot From Hard Disc

Mar 11, 2011

After happily running a persistent install from a USB stick for a week I decided to delete my Windows install and replace with Ubuntu.

I did the install from the USB stick, selecting the option to use the whole drive.

When the install finished I was prompted to restart. I removed the USB stick and did so. The machine rebooted... and nothing. Just a flashing cursor top left of a black screen.

I've booted the USB stick version and looked at the hard drive. Stuff has been installed sure enough, but it will not boot.

Machine is Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. Running Ubuntu from USB stick has been smooth as silk with no issues.

I'm not technically minded, so I'm afraid that any assistance (for which I would be eternally grateful) may need to be n00b-style dumbed-down.

General :: How To Partition A Hard Disc

Mar 6, 2011

My computer has two hard discs; one contains Windows 7 and the other is completely empty and has a capacity of 160 GB. I want to install Ubuntu and another distro - possibly Fedora - on the empty HD but I am stuck as to how to go about partitioning the drive.Should I partition the drive first so that it is ready for two distros or should I install one of the distros first and then let the second one do its own partitioning? If I should partition the drive first could someone in the direction of a step-by-step guide to this;preferably a guide for dummies. I already created /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdb2 thinking that these would be the equivalent of two logical drives in Windows e.g. D: and E: but this didn't seem to be the case because when I started to install Ubuntu it asked all sorts of questions to which I did not know the answers so I have now returned the drive to its original state.

Debian :: Installing Win7 On Second Hard Disc

Aug 15, 2009

I have two sata HDs. One of these has Debian an Winxp installed. Grub is the bootloader. Grub resides in MBR (on the same disk). Now that I've added that second disk, I would like to test win7 on it. What I would like to do is to be able to choose -at boot time (maybe in bios setup)- between booting from the disk containing win7 or from the disk containing Grub with winxp and Debian. I thought that when installing win7 it would let me choose the disk where to install it and here is where the problem arises.

Win7 installer detects my partitions and lists them as if they were not on different disks. What would happen if I choose to install win7 on the partition I want to (second disk, partition1)? Will win7 create a new bootloader? Now I am a little confused and don't want to keep on going not being sure the results are what I expected. What steps should I follow to install win7 on the second hard disc not affecting the disc with winxp, debian and grub letting me choose between these two Operating Systems?
