I am having great difficulty viewing a series of educational videos (MMS streams) in Ubuntu 10.04, which view perfectly in Windows XP. All I get is a black screen. No matter whether I use Firefox or Chrome or Opera, No matter whether with MPlayer, Totem or VLC.
I have tried everything I could find by googling (basically trying different media players and plugins) but nothing works. This is my final attempt! Anyone have any ideas, or similar problems?

I'm experiencing a sudden black flash before video play back with VLC. The whole 3 screens just flash black and come back, and then the video plays fine in VLC. This doesn't happen with other media players, such as mPlayer and Totem.
I'm running an XFX Radeon 5450 (ATi) with the propriety 10.7 drivers. Running 3 17" (1280x1024) in "EyeFinity". I've had a look on the unofficial bug thingy for ati drivers for linux, and there is a bug back from 2008.[URL]...
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, of tips to start looking to try and solve my little issue, I've spent hours and hours looking though xorg, syslog and other logs in /var/log/ and nothing seems to stand out.
I recently swapped a hard drive from another computer I was using.The previous computer had nVidia video card (i think it was 9500? something like that), and the new computer has an ATI Radeon 4200 HD video card. Now, when I boot it up on my new comp using the same hard drive, I get a black screen and my monitor just switches from digital, analog, hdmi. I'm guessing that the video card drivers are still installed, but I cannot switch back the hard drive since my other comp is far away from where I live. If I boot up with ubuntu CD however, it loads fine.
I have many important files on the previous install though, and I'm not sure how to get to it. I wouldnt mind reinstalling ubuntu as long as I can get those files back.
i've got a mythbuntu 10.10 box connected to my tv; sometimes i want to use it to watch internet tv. owever, when i try to resize videos to full-screen, sometimes black bars intermittently flash across the entire screen. this does not happen when the video is in a window or on the web page, only when going into full-screen mode. unfortunately, on some of these sites, even the "large" in-page video selection is still too small to be comfortably watched from the couch.
i'd suspect it's something with flash, but a similar thing happens when i'm using skype inside a windows xp on vmware. black bars flashing across when in "full-screen" but just fine when zoomed up inside a window. and i don't think vmware video output is flash-based. so it may be something else entirely.
also, this doesn't happen on all internet video - i've only had it happen on video from nbc.com and nfl.com (i haven't really had the opportunity or reason to try many other sites yet), and it was only a little noticeable from the nfl.com but nearly unwatchable from nbc. yet if i go to videos, i have no trouble getting any of their videos running full-screen.
i have an integrated geforce 8200 graphics, and i'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers version 256. i'm not running 260 since its vdpau capability is questionable, and i need that for mythtv. i have a 64-bit system.
does anyone have any ideas regarding this? the fact that i'm getting consistently good results from videos yet consistently bad ones from the tv networks makes me wonder if it's something i'm even going to be able to fix.

If i go tosystem>administration>Additional drivers, the dialog comes back with "No proprietary drivers are used on this system. Ok so now I go to Ubuntu Software center and search nvidia..... I get the option to installl Nvidia binary x.org driver (version 185), I do so
Now in the Additional drivers dialogue it tells me "this driver is active and currently in use". Awsome, Now when I click on Nvidia X Server settings under system>Administration I get the following dialogue."You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."If i do what that last message said, run sudo nvidia-xconfig in the terminal, It gives an error saying the xconfig file is not there, and it will create one. The next time I reboot Ubunut just shows a black dos like screen asking for username and password. If i put it in, it does nothing, I end up having to re-install ubuntu.
My EVGA 7600GT video card suddenly died. A friend gave me an EVGA GeForce 8400GS to replace. I'm running a homemade AMD Athlon 64 3700 box with 2 GB memory and 2- 250 GB WD hard drives. First drive has Win XP OS and second drive runs Ubuntu 10.04. I was using Ubuntu about 99% of the time before the video failed. After installing new vid card, I deleted old driver in Win and installed new driver off the CD that came with the card. Windows system was then 100% back to normal.
My grub booter is set up to default boot to Ubuntu with Windows the last choice which can be done manually. After installing new Win video driver and confirming it worked, I re-booted the computer and let it go to Ubuntu. The results was the usually flashing cursor for about 10 seconds, but instead of the Ubuntu splash screen popping up, the monitor went black for about a minute and then shut off the same as if I had shut down the computer.
That was over a week ago, Since then I have tried everything I can think of but nothing changes. I have read and tried numerous ideas from other posts on these forums (such as hitting ctrl, alt, +/- to change screen resolution) but I still have a black screen.
I tried booting up from my original install CD which is ver 9.10, not 10.04 (I upgraded to 10.04 by directly downloading online and never made a 10.04 CD). I can get into an Ubuntu desktop with that old CD and I checked to see that it showed the highest resolution for my monitor (a 22" wide flatscreen whose native resolution is high-1920x1280?? don't exactly remember at the moment). I also tried loading the generic Nvidia 185 driver but it didn't seem to take. I downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for Linux onto a thumb drive and tried to install it here, but was refused because the message said it had to go into "root" and I didn't have permission. I don't know how to establish permission when booting from an old install CD. I'm sure I have administration rights under my regular 10.04 installation but can't see it due to the blank screen.
I've tried at boot to go to the recovery mode listed right below the default Ubuntu boot option, but when I do, a whole series of text flashes on the screen and rolls down to the word "done" with a flashing cursor at the very end, The cursor flashes for about 5 seconds and then the screen goes black. I've tried to enter some quick text at the cursor to keep it from going black, but it doesn't stop it. It wants to go black and it does so.
I'm install CentoS 5.3 but I've not a GUI... when I swith , screen is black... maybe problem in Video Card... I'm download this driver, but I don't know how to install ... Driver is NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.42-pkg1.run - how CentoS 5.3 work in 256 mb card...

My problem: while working on my laptop the system Offered an update to my ATI video card............so being the nube that I am I said go ahead and install it............yep that f'd it up. it ran for a while then froze up to the point I had to hard boot the machine. on restart the desktop splash/load screen displays but nothing else afterwards. I can get into restore mode and even terminal but can't seem to find anything........there is an autofix video option but that did not work either.
I spent a week loading and configuring this thing and do not want to start back from scratch...........I have too much stuff to lose on a new install. funny thing is that I just had set the system to do a complete backup of the ubuntu instance for tonight so I would have some way to restore this if something happened...........well it happend before the backup ran tonight........go figure.
Is there a way to reload the default system without loosing my files and such? I would just have to load vmware back on and some other programs but I a okay with that.
I installed Skype 2.1.0.81 using Software manager on Ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working fine with exception of incoming video. All incoming video is displayed as a black screen. From Google I learned that this is a typical issue with Skype on Ubuntu. I tried the instructions but none of them are working for me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter having a lot of trouble with vista and no chance of getting Windows 7 anytime soon, I decided to get Ubuntu and use dual booting with vista. I had recently installed it about two days ago and for the most part it worked pretty well. That is until I installed the driver for my video card, an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro, then things went down hill for me. Every time I try and boot Ubuntu it now goes to a black screen after the logo comes up and i am unable to do anything. I have tried to look up some solutions, but I am still relatively new to programing and some of this stuff seems a bit complicated for me. Is there a simple solution to this that does not require a reinstall?

I installed a video driver and after restarting I got as far as the login screen where I saw that the driver did not work: screen is mostly black with random bars of color. I was only able to restart in recovery mode mode. I tried the fix graphics option, which did not work and also some commands that I've seen posted in other threads. So far, still cannot delete the problematic driver or boot up normally successfully.

I just got done installing Ubuntu on a new harddrive and set it up to dual boot with grub loader. However, when I boot into Ubuntu, the screen goes black. I can however login (blind) by hitting enter and typing password. The login sound goes and it logs in, however, the screen stays black. I am running a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 Video Card.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed jessie amd64 lxde to a thumb drive to use with a laptop. Vanilla install using the amd64 lxde live cd. Upon booting the usb system, I am presented with a black screen with blinking cursor. No grub screen, no ability to type any commands and no ability to switch to another terminal. I tried booting into the live cd and I could get into the intro splash screen. Booting to the live system from there would also hang at a black screen.
However, using the kernel parameter "nomodeset" from the splash screen did allow the live system to boot to the desktop. I booted the live system, mounted the usb system and chrooted into it. I edited /etc/default/grub to include "nomodeset" in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX variables and then ran update-grub.
Upon reboot to the usb system the problem still occurred. The video card in question is a amd firepro 5800m which has an lspci line of mobile radeon 5000 series. This card was supported in wheezy and apparently works with the live system.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOpenSuse 11.3 with nVidia drivers.I have the screen working fine though it only runs in 1600x1200@75 using the nVidia driver (GTX260 card).When I play a game in full screen mode all seems OK but when I exit the game then I just get the mouse pointer on a black screen.There must be something present since the cursor changes as I move it, normal pointer -> hand over a link etc. It's just that black on black isn't very readable.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi installed Fedora 12 on an external hard drive. Everything went fine with the installation and it was working perfectly until i tried to install my video card drivers. I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?

I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

I have tried using Cheese to capture video and it captures maybe 2 seconds of movement, then goes black and/or the image freezes. I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 in my old desktop, i.e. Compaq Evo D510 e-pc:

The above is my setup and Ubuntu runs perfectly fine when it is being cold booted, i.e. I shut it down during the night and boot it in the morning, it boots perfectly fine. But while using, it suddenly freezes and I'm only able to move my mouse pointer and nothing else works on the screen. I tried doing the Ctrl+Alt+(F1/F2/...) but nothing works.
So when I restart it using the power switch, it goes into the black screen and nothing loads up. I'm stuck over here. And if I turn it off for around 30mins by removing the power plug, and then reboot it again, Ubuntu loads without any problem and runs for sometime, then again the same freezing problem happens and I have to wait for another 30mins to boot it up again.
I have a 28" monitor connected to it and it runs at 1920 x 1200 (16:10) resolution at 60Hz.
