So i was searching around my big desktop was working fine by default but I couldn't figure out how to switch my primary monitor and all the threads on this topic where real old and the fglrx drivers kept messing me up
so I went to my profile and showed hidden files and found a cool .xml file called monitors under .config
opend it up and chooses the primary monitor I wanted

When my netbook has an extended screen, using an external monitor, all of the panels stay on the netbook, not the big monitor. When I connect an external monitor, I want to use it as my primary screen. I only really intend to use the netbook screen for skype calls (so I am looking into the webcam, and not away from it) since it is so small. I wish the secondary screen to be the netbook, not the external monitor. How can I do this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.10 this evening. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8500GT video card with two monitors hooked up (one to the cards VGA, the other to the DVI). I installed Nvidia drivers and Ubuntu is working with both monitors fine.
The problem I am having is it chose the monitor plugged into VGA as the primary (uses that monitor for the toolbars) when I really want them to go on the monitor that is plugged into DVI. Is there anyway for me to switch which monitor Ubuntu treats as the primary?

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a laptop. I have a 19" Acer monitor and in the past have successfully configured my xorg.conf to handle dual monitor setup with 1024x768 on the laptop and 1600x900 on the Acer monitor. What I have done now is run the laptop through a KVM switch. Due to this, I would like to set the Acer monitor as the primary monitor and just shut the laptop. How can I project my laptop screen to my Acer monitor so that I can use the 1600x900 resolution available rather than just cloning my laptop and using 1024x768?

When the video is full screened on the TV, the actual video uses the resolution of the primary monitor and not the second.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ASUS 1000HE laptop running Lucid 10.04 (Desktop not netbook version) which I have connected to an external display (LCD). I don't intend to use the laptop by itself anymore therefore I have configured the display properties to turn off the laptop display and use the external display as primary. However, when the PC enters 'locked mode' or the display powers down after a defined period of time (as set in the properties) when I wake the PC and the display, it turns the laptop monitor back on .... switches the laptop screen to primary display (i.e. with the panels etc displayed on it) and extends the desktop to the external display! The only thing I can then do is go back into the configuration utility and turn the laptop monitor off again and boom, everything is fine and dandy displaying on the external display again! I don't really want to have to do this every time I come back to the PC after it has been locked nor do I want to write a script (if it can be avoided) to deal with it!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Radeon HD 5830, running 3 monitors on 10.10 64bit with the 10.6 video driver. The three monitors ( from left to right ) :
DFP1 : 1152x2048
DFP2 : 1920x1200
CRT1 : 1360x768
The problem I'm having is getting the middle monitor to be the primary one.
Running
xrandr --output DFP2 --primary
puts the panel on the middle screen but my docky and icons stay on the left screen. Flash videos also open up on the portrait left monitor which looks awful. Ideally I would like the icons on DFP1, docky on P2 and flash videos to open on P2. But I would definitely settle for everyone to be on the middle screen and drag it around as I please.

I have google'd the crap out of this and have yet to find a "solved" forum. I currently have 2 sapphire ati 5770's in xfire. I also have two monitors. My (preferred) primary display has a dvi input and my other display is hdmi. I have them both plugged into only one of the cards. For some reason it keeps setting the hdmi display as the primary. And I want them in extended view. The ATI CCC suite does not support changing the primary monitor and I have tinkered with the xconfig but I do not really know what I am doing, so I have ultimately not been successful. here is my xorg.config file.

I have two monitors, the internal LCD of the laptop, and an external 23". It is working well, but sometimes dialog boxes pop up on the laptop screen inconveniently. The Gnome panel is on the big screen. For example, Firefox is running on the "main" external big screen, I select Edit|Preferences and the dialog box comes up on the laptop screen. 9.04 didn't do this. Is there a primary monitor setting or something to fix this?

I've got a 19' Sceptre monitor, and a 24' Samsung SyncMaster P2450.I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card. I'm using 2 DVI ports to connect the monitors.Currently, all of the icons and menu bars are appearing on the Sceptre monitor. The Sceptre monitor is also to the left of the Samsung monitor. I've looked all through the Catalyst Control Center preferences and can not find anything useful.

10 minutes (screen), 20 minutes for suspension.
After around 30 minutes, I came back and switched back on the pc.
The primary monitor (VGA) was not detected, even after a system reboot.

I have an Nvidia card, but currently I am using nouveau drivers.
Two monitors: VGA (primary) and DVI (secondary).
Later I could get my primary monitor to work by switching tty (ctrl+alt+f3 and typing "startx" in the console).
I guess this is related to Xorg configuration (/etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty), but I am not really sure.
I believe I'm right in thinking the type of graphics card I have is relevant somehow to this, so after some googling I think I worked out mine is Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with the nouveau driver in Fedora 15 Code: lspci | grep VGA 40:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV41GL [Quadro FX 1400] (rev a2) The problem is that when I boot a Fedora 15 live Cd, either gnome or xfce, the monitors initially seem to work in that they display at the proper resolution, both as the CD boots and as X initially starts. I can see the background and the mouse cursor - it is "busy" ...
As the desktop finishes loading, however, my primary monitor becomes disabled. With gnome the screen goes black, with xfce it goes white. I can still see the mouse on my secondary monitor, but I can not seem to open any applications (such as a terminal) or change to a console (ctrl-alt-F1 or ctrl-alt-F2). I can boot into safe mode. Adding the boot option video=xxx sets the resolution on the console as it boots, but does not help running X.
I installed openSUSE 11.3 on my Dell studio laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 4500 graphics card and everything worked straight out of the box.
Now.. I am connecting my tv through HDMI cable as second monitor. Basically I just want to play movies on my tv while still having the laptop screen free to work. This also works, I just plugged it in and I had two screens.
My problem is that my tv is the primary monitor so basically my laptop background (and all the buttons that go with it) moves to the tv and my laptop background is just a background. See attached image at the bottom of this post(Laptop on the left and tv on the right).
This is exactly what I want but the other way around. I can't seem to change this in System Settings/Display. Is there a file somewhere I can change this?

I have two monitors attached to my video card. Primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1280x1024 and second has 1920x1200. My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show login screen always on primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? I use Ubuntu 10.04.Now I'm ready to modify gdm sources if there is no such option in configuration files.

The settings seem correct, primary is set to yes on the monitor that I want but it doesn't seem to be working as well.
I've a high resolution monitor(2560x1440) on my laptop running Debian testing and would like to change the font size in X. I manage to change most of the fonts to a readable size through the openbox configuration manager. But the font in my login window and for example in apps like vlc is still very tiny. How this could be changed ....
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am posting this to hear if there are others with display issues on Dell E6500 laptop with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160 driver. This problem is starting to annoy me a great deal, but I am uncertain how I should move forward. In short; I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed on my Dell E6500 laptop. When using only the laptop, everything works great. The second I plug it into the docking station (the laptop lid closed) and want to use my two external monitors (Dell 2001FP) I'm in trouble. I cant see anything and what I get is a 'DVI: Cannot Display this Mode' on the primary monitor - If i try a regular VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.
I have played around with the Nvidia config but it cant find my monitors and therefore I cant do much. I am aware of the various "hack the xorg.conf" options, but I before I do that I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing. I had hoped that we were pasted the hack stage and that primary functions such as display would work by now.
I have openSUSE 11.2 KDE with NVIDIA drivers. I have a TV on the left and a monitor on the right. In the Nvidia drivers this has also been setup as stated. The TV is on position 0:0 and the monitor is in position 1920:0. The monitor has been ticked in the drivers as the primary screen.
My problem is that all application open on the secondary screen and not the primary screen (monitor) as I expect. How to the OS/drivers that will ensure that application always open on the monitor situated on the right are welcome.

I'm using kde 3.5.10 on a Debian Lenny with xorg from backports and nvidia proprietary driver (195.36.15) on my laptop. Nowadays I have received a 2nd monitor, end my purpose is to attach it to my laptop. TwinView or separate X screen work fine but clone or extended view modes for my mind are not so usefull. I think there is the possibility to assign one virtual desktop to one monitor and another adjacent virtual desktop to the second monitor. how to obtain this kind configuration.

I can see the larger monitor from the rest of the room and use it as my TV, for playing DVDs and various types of web video. However, it isn't ideal for Flash video. For instance, if I watch a video from Hulu or any other Flash-based site, I can expand it to full-screen mode.
However, no matter which monitor the browser window is on, the full-screen mode is always on the laptop LCD panel, which is both too small and not visible from most of the room. Does anyone know of a way to force the Flash video to play full-screen on the monitor I select instead of the primary? My video chipset is NVidia, using kernel 2.6.31 (Ubuntu).

I have one Gigabit Realtek chip integrated on my Mainboard (which I use for internet connection), and one aditional 100Mbit in PCI slot. So, I basically want to use this 100Mbit for testing purposes, but when I connect something to this 100Mbit NIC adapter, it becomes default and I can not access internet. So, I want to set my eth0 (gigabit integrated adapter) as default adapter.
P.S. I've tried to edit /etc/network/interfaces and iftab, but nothing worked.
I have first installed Windows7 to sda2 (sda1 being the MBR). Then I installed Ubuntu as follows: sda3 /boot, sda5 swap (sda4 being the Extended partition), sda6 /, sda7 /home. So far so good. Windows and Ubuntu worked fine. I also planned to create another partition for data and two more partitions for Arch Linux. And here is the problem.I just assumed that the Extended partitions were created logical but actually they are also primary. So, as things stand, all my 7 partitions are primary and I cannot create any more partitions.I must've erred somewhere during the Ubuntu installation. Is it possible ti change the Extended partitions into logical, without affecting all the stuff within? Any ideas? Otherwise I will have to delete everything after Windows and install Ubuntu again, making sure that I create logical partitions in the Extended part
