Ubuntu Installation :: Start The PC And Boot From The CD, Getting A LOGIN Screen Instead Of The Regular Option To Install From CD?
Jul 21, 2010
Got it on a CD and was using it as "Try Ubuntu" instead of installing it for good (I still wanted to see if there were memory issues or HDD issues with my desktop, before I installed it for good).Anyway, I would shut down the pc after about 2 or 3 days and redo the CD install (try ubuntu option) again and add all the plugins etc.Kids used this for playing some games on friv or nickjr.The real issue - of late, when I try to start the PC and boot from the CD, I am getting a LOGIN screen instead of the regular option to install from CD or Try the Ubuntu.

I want, when I boot up, to load and log-in automatically a default user. I get a login in screen with the option to login as root, I do not want this. How do disable the option to login to X as root and just load as me/default user?

A few days ago I updated my openSUSE installation on my Acer Aspire 5920G notebook from 11.1 to 11.2, but I haven't been able to get any kind of graphical shell loaded. Using the regular "desktop" option in GRUB results in a black screen. seems my PC is still responsive though as hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del like a mad man results in the PC getting rebooted after a while. I had the same "black screen" issue with the KDElive CD and the regular installation CD (Yeah, I should have known better than to do the upgrade...).
When opting for "Failsafe" in GRUB, I reach a command line. Before that it seems to try to load GNOME (you get to see the cursor) but fails at it a few times in a row. When I try to start GDM afterwards from the command line, it gets into a loop in which it tries to load, then crashes and then tries to load again, endlessly.I have installed the newest NVIDIA drivers "the hard way", and my card (NVIDIA 8600M GT) is on the list of supported devices on the NVIDIA website. SaX2 seems to work OK with it.

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I am trying to use a F14 network install CD to upgrade on an old HP Pavilion 9695C (Athalon 850MHz, nVidia NV5 RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro AGP) with F12 on it. This same disk successfully upgraded a HP Omnibook 6000 with F12. I boot with the network install CD and get the initial menu to select to install/upgrade, install using basic video driver, etc. After selecting either upgrade or basic video driver install, I see the CD being read, then nothing, just a blank screen. I had a similar problem with F12 network install on this machine. So I tried adding "vga=0x318 nomodeset" to the upgrade boot options. The only difference is a quick flash on the screen, then a blinking "underscore character" cursor. The "install using basic video driver" has the same result.
Have also tried:linux nofb
vga=791 [nomodeset]
vga=1 [nomodeset]
xdriver=nv nomodeset
xdriver=vesa nomodeset
However, I always end up with a blank screen or blank screen with blinking underscore cursor. I know this particular AGP has problems with the nouveau driver. On F12 I had to force it to use the nv driver. I submitted a bug but there was no interest on it as this was F12 and F13 was the latest at the time. I did try to upgrade to F13, but ran into this same problem. I was hoping F14 would be better.

When I boot my pc it used to take me to a prompt which asked which OS I would like to boot. Today randomly, some grub rescue menu came up. I read online that that meant I had to fix my grub menu, which I did. Now a regular grub menu pops and and I have no idea what to do with it. Whats a grub menu? How can I just get back to my regular boot screen? I run dual boot xp and ubuntu, is grub a program of xp or ubuntu? I have no idea what this grub menu is and whats going on with my pc!

I've been running openSUSE 11.2 within a VM using VirtualBox 3.1.2 with Vista x64 as the host OS for quite some time now with good results. Yesterday I went to reboot the VM and VBox made some comment about 3D not working and needing to install the VBox guest additions (which were already installed). After rebooting and seeing the openSUSE splash screen, I now get a solid purplish display with no activity. I've tried running "sax2 -r", re-installing guest additions, running the repair CD, and other things but this problem has not gone away. Aside from reloading the OS, does anyone have ideas on how I might fix this?

No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

I have a dual boot configuration (WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10) on a PC (my video card is an ATI Radeon 4850), i have been configuring ubuntu for the past 5 days and everything was working fine. Today i installed Screenlets (through synaptic manager), and i was adding a screenlet when the screen froze. I could move the cursor, but couldn't click anything. I left it for about 5 minutes to see if anything changes, and since it was still frozen, i did a hard reset (restart from the button).
In the grub menu i chose the normal linux boot (not the recovery mode), it loads up the welcome splash screen (with the tribal sound and the bar moving), and then the little circle cursor appears, turns into the normal arrow cursor and it hangs. I can move the cursor, but the screen is stuck with the ubuntu splash screen.I restarted (again from the button) and went into recovery mode, but in the recovery console i can't select any option from the keyboard (i tried hitting the cursor keys, enter, nothing happens). I hit ctrl+alt+delete and it restarted the system (so the keyborad does function). In XP i found a recommendation to restart the Xserver, so i rebooted in the Ubuntu splash screen, hit ctrl+alt+F2, logged in, typed the command i found:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorgrestarted (sudo reboot), and got to the splash screen, which after playing the tribal sounds, turned semi-transparent (i could see the desktop wallpaper, taskbars and a black rectangle where my cairo-dock should appear), but again it freezed, no cursor. I hit ctrl+alt+F2 to go into console mode, and uninstalled screenlets (since it was the last thing i installed before the initial freeze).Screenlets uninstalled properly (i used sudo apt-get remove screenlets) so i rebooted, but it still freezes at the ubuntu screen splash (this time it wasn't transparent, just the standard screen splash). So i tried getting into console mode again, but this time my screen displays lines in a lot of colors, randomly (probably a failure from the video adapter)

Hello guys, I've just ran 'apt-get dselect-upgrade' to upgrade some packages, there're few packages I want to keep.
However it changed a lot my customized environment like the login screen and the wallpapers.
I really like the previous login screen but how can I change it back?
The option 'Application > Administration > Login screen' is not enabled.

I had Kubuntu 10.04 installed, I screwed up a bunch of stuff in it and it would hang after the login screen. I reinstalled Kubuntu 10.10 (formatted the partition with Kubuntu on it) but I kept my /home partition in tact. NOw, when I log in, i starts to load, and then KICKS ME OUT, back into the log in screen. The user does exist, I can access the user from the console, but when I try to get into Kubuntu, it kicks me back out to login. What on earth is going on? I've tried failsafe mode as well as regular login. neither works.

My default desktop environment is Xfce 4.7 (older machine). Monday I came back to work to discover a 17 GB log file in /var/log that ate up my root partition and gave me trouble running. I deleted it, which solved the problem EXCEPT that now when I boot, instead of the Xfce login prompt, I get an X-Windows login prompt. This takes me to a terminal (which apparently reads my .zshrc file), from which I can start an Xfce session by running xfce4-session. How can I get back to booting into the Xfce login screen?

I used Ubuntu customization kit to "build" my own Ubuntu. It works as a charm. Completely recommended.
I install that custom ubuntu 10.04 on a 2gb pendrive, using usb-creator-gtk and it worked also good.
The only thing is bodering me, is when I boot that pendrive, it appear a window asking if I want to install the OS or if I want to use it live.
How can I remove that window on boot?
I want to boot directly on desktop...that way will be perfect!

have just installed Ubuntu alongside Windows 7. I just went along with the manual set-up all through the install. I was expecting to see an obvious option on starting up my computer as to whether to run Ubuntu or Windows but it just goes right ahead and runs windows exactly as it did before the install.

when I tried to boot into my PC yesterday, it would run through the normal loading process until it got to the login screen. There it loaded the splash screen,but the login box never comes up. I have rebooted several times, tried recovery, and run several reconfigure gdm options I have seen on the forums. Nothing seems to work.
I have restarted gdm, it goes back to the same screen again. If I startx, I was able to get to a desktop with several things missing, and unable to go into anything that required sudo permission. Also, the shutdown and restart optons were grayed out in the menu.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a vostro 1000 laptop using standard configuration.I repartitioned the whole disk for Ubuntu. Now, when starting up Ubuntu, it appears to log in fine, but right near the end of the theme and before the desktop loads, it hangs, repeating a slice of the intro music over and over again. What could be causing this problem?Note: On every ubuntu disk I use, it also says that modules/..../Kernel something is missing from the disk quickly before booting the live session.

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:
/etc/fstab:
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part6 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
[code]....
I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.
System specs:
Motherboard: MSI P45 Platinum
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Video Card: Radeon HD4850
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Patriot
HDD: Main: 250GB SATA Western Digital
