I have 11.04 installed, Gnome 2.32.0 - life has been good until I responded as normal to the update manager this morning. Upon reboot noticed my main menu, system menu and places menu are gone. Other icons and stuff like power button remain on the top toolbar but again, no menus.Googling around I found solutions that were years old and/or did not work for me (like installing XFCE - which did nothing).

Whether it is just made unconfigurable or difficult to configure I don't like it. Can't move the panel from top to bottom, Firefox did not have pull down menus for bookmarks etc. Where the did the Application ,Places and System panel menus go? In 10.10 and before I could right click on the desk top and add to the panel but, 11.04 does not even respond to right click.If this is a bug that has a fix please help but if this is normal for 11.04.please let me know how I can make 10.10 the default partition to boot.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have fedora 12 and I tried to change the screen resolution under the system menu to a higher one and it changed but now I dont have any menus and I'm not sure if I can use quick keys to go back to the display preferences to reset the screen resolution. Is there anyway I could run the display preferences by running a command in the bash shell or is there a quick key that allows menu access.

Choosing Main Menu>Places>Downloads, for instance, generates a little disk activity, but never displays a window with the contents of the Downloads directory. I had to reformat my hard drive because I was trying to run windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 on the same drive which caused many problems. After re-installing ubuntu 10.10 alone I noticed that I no longer had access to any of the "Places" sub menus, Home folder through Ubuntu one.

Suddently, a message was shown:
"no main file system chosen. Please solve this error from the partition menu."
And it wouldn't continue!
how can I find the partition menu and set the file system for the ubuntu?? An idea would be to enter the installation cd for windows (as if I would wanted to format the pc)...wouldn't then the partition menu appear?

how to reproduce:
open firefox, download and install some plugins/addons that generate menu entries with an icon in front of them.
e.g. "downthemall" (down them all)

there is however space for these icons in the menu. and I can see icons in the bookmark and history menus. (web page favicons)
these icons improve the usability greatly because they offer a visual guide to the menu not only to the item they belong to but also to other items because I know that the item I want is e.g. one above the green triangle.
I have a slightly impaired vision so this a far greater issue to me than you well sighted folks may think. Just put on some glasses with lots of fingerprints on them and you will see the difference.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't know how this happened, been using Ubuntu for a few years now (but I still consider myself a newbie): Using 10.10. In the "places" drop down menu, when I click on locations such as Home, Documents, Downloads, etc, the Totem Movie Players runs, and tries to "open" the files in the respective folders --- instead of a Nautilus file manager window opening up.
How could this have happened? I looked in both Nautilus and Movie Player "Preferences", but was unable to find any customizable options that could be related.
There is a problem that I'm experiencing, and that is that the link to Documents and the link to Pictures is missing from the Places menu, and I don't know how to put them back.

"[STOP Sign] Could not open location 'file:///home/pilotferdi/Documents'
Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/digikam" (No such file or directory)" (I had digikam installed on my computer, then I decided to remove it.)When I open a Nautilus file browser, and choose "Information" from the side pane, my home directory is listed with these three options (buttons) below:
1. Open with digikam
2. Open with Gwenview
3. Open with Open Folder
Somehow, the default choice, "Open with Open Folder" has been replaced with "Open with digikam", and I cannot access the bookmarks anymore. I think I need to make "Open with Open Folder" the default option when I click on a bookmark, but I don't know how to do it. I tried without success to use alacarte to make the changes.
In F11 the administration menu had more things in it IIRC. Seems that in F12 a lot of tools are missing.Specifically the SELinux config tool is missing, but getting the rest of the menu back would be nice. I can't remember what it had but I'm sure I'll need them at some point.

I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? I'm new to Linux and wanted to get experience with Ubuntu Server for my new build NAS, because just a NAS OS wouldn't be enough for me. I wanted a server so I can also setup a PDC and webserver.So currently I'm installing ubuntu server 10.04 onto my newly assembled server via usb stick(didn't build in dvd rom drive) I checked the BIOS before loading the OS onto the computer and everything is detected.
there's 1 thing that keeps bugging me. After installation i get a message that the install is complete and usb sticks and all devices should be removed to prevent it from booting the install again.However when i remove the usb stick and I reboot the server I get the following message on the screen:
missing operating system
or
can't find operating system
When I do let the usb stick in, it boots into Ubuntu Server and i can see all my configurations that I made eventhough during install I chose to install it on the HD and paid attention to it I wouldn't touch the usb stick.From here on i could configure the rest, like samba, and give my server an static ip address via the command line.Back to my problem: what can i do to make my server boot from HD without that I have the usb stick in?
I believe I have an old operating system of netbook Ubuntu and I am trying to upgrade to the latest 11 version. My netbook doesn't have a cd drive. I have tried using UNETBOOTIN with my usb drive (2GB) and have encountered problems with the install.
When I boot in it says" missin operating system". Sorry I don't have time to search I am on vacation and internet is sparse. Also i am loading unetbootin with a iso image of the latest version.
I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using the automated distro upgrade, and my resolution has been changed to 1024x768. I tried to go to System -> Preferences -> Display to see why this might be, but that entry is missing from my Preferences menu. I am using a Radeon HD 4200 video card, but I am not using any special video drivers right now. /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist.

I thought, because of a previous experience, that my music and pictures were ok in the windows file system because I would be able to access them. Well I can't. I don't even see the the Windows c: drive. I know its still there because I can boot windows.
So what do I need to do to make the c: volume / drive reappear.
I just upgraded to 10.04, and now I can't figure out how to customize the color of the system drop-down menus (Applications > Accessories, etc.). After I made a change to the appearance, the colors became all washed out (as in the screenshot), and now I can't figure out how to darken the drop-down menus. Anybody have any tips? My ultimate goal is a darkened version of the new Ambiance theme (think XFCE Dusk colors with Ambiance buttons and layout).If it helps, I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04, and I've had KDE, XFCE, and GNOME all installed (and most of each set is still there, as I'm experimenting with each one).Also, the system tray is no longer home to a sound volume button, is it supposed to be that way? How to I get one back up there?
