Ubuntu Installation :: Add A User, the Nessus Daemon Is Running On My Machine?
Nov 20, 2010
after some tweaking i managed to get nessus installed on my machine. However i'm running into an issue when trying to add a user. The nessus daemon is running on my machine, i've registered. I think everything is peachy in that regard, but when i run:
Obviously the command not found is my error, from what i understand there isn't a default user placed in the first time.So essentially i have thie program installed, but i can't access it.
I have a backtrack distro on a usb stick. I wish to do the following :- (a) Partition the usb stick to have a ext3 filesystem, so that the instln may be persistent for the changes. But the fdisk utility creates partitions as dev/sdb1p1 and /dev/sdb1p2. These however, could not be accessed by mkfs utility. How to overcome this problem. (b) Next , I downloaded the nessus .lzm file and put it in the /base/module dir. But unable to start the nessus daemon. It suggests an error regarding unable to create /opt/nessus and /etc/nessus/nessusd.conf. I think starting nessus as root would help but the problem persists!
Fedora 12 Nessus: 2.2.11-5 Authent: using passwrd Client: GTK version User: added with no rules nessus-mkcrt: has been ran Hosts.allow: hole made for localhost to nessusd with nessusd:127.0.0.1 (this took care of my ssl error)
Upon trying to log into daemon I get the cert then prompted with failed login. I am also not getting anything showing up in my logviewer (gnome). For most other daemons I have had them automagicaly pop up (denyhosts for example) how can I get nessus to show up as well.
I'm trying to get mySQL Daemon to start when the machine starts up (and it requires root privileges to run). The command to startup would be
Code: sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start however that would prompt for a password, and that would not be very well possible now would it? Now, if i try to start it up without being root, it will not start. So this is my problem, maybe someone out there would know a bit more about this than me.
I'm currently running 32 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. Apparently, my computer can support 64bit OS. My / and /home partitions are separated and exist on different physical hard drives. Is it possible to just install 64bit ubuntu over my 32bit existing installation? Could I preserve the customizations I've made? what about application settings like chrome, firefox, compiz, etc.? Would I have to meticulously reinstall all of the little things I've done to my ubuntu installation?
when calling 'top' dbus is having load of activity ('dbus-monitor --session') outputs also a lot of action (see attachement). this has effect that my machine is slowing down and normal work takes ages.I have no clue where the activity is coming from. I also had a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...or/+bug/441828. But there are no unnormal devices plugged in... (just keyboard + cordless mouse).when starting the machine the cpu load is ~9%. After a while (after 1 day) it goes up to 70-80%. the started applications do not change during that time. so i guess somewhere there is a leak.
i am trying to daemonize my (java) program on ubuntu. For that end i created a script based on /etc/init.d/skeleton script which obviously uses start-stop-daemon.
But I cannot make the process (java program) run on the background. it keeps running in the same terminal i start my daemon script. Trying --background option for start-stop-daemon does not help.
Still trying to get my openVPN running.I can get the daemon running from terminal but nothing is configured. I copied my config file over from Windoze partition. My openVPN works flawlessly on both my windoze boxes.
Following this but came to another dead end when Im instructed to: Next, edit /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/vars adjusting the following to your environment:
I am trying to use my Apple Remote Controller that came with my iMac 4.1. I did some research and on the Ubuntu site it said that its possible with a application called Infrared Remote Controller. It detected from the hardrive which version I had etc but than a error message appeared on the bottom saying:
I'm trying to modify an existing user so that any files they create can be at least read (although writing and execution would be nice) by any other user. The reason is because I need the daemon running my Apache server to be able to access files created by a daemon running under this user, files which will be created and accessed in real-time.
I am tring to stop avahi from starting and running at all.I use kill PID and killall avahi-daemon and it will not go away, it comes back with a new PID. Does anyone know a way of stopping it?
I'm new to Fedora and have just purchased a subscription to a GoDaddy Virtual Dedicated Server, which I'm able to control using SSH.I have a Java application that I want to run as a daemon on this VDS. Some google searching yielded a bunch of different methods of doing this, none of which I'm sure would be guaranteed to work with Fedora, so I was hoping someone here could give it to me straight and fill me in on the simplest way of doing this. What is the best/simplest way to run a Java application as a daemon on Fedora?

I have a java program which I need to run as a service or daemon. What is the most stable method to do it? It will be heavy processing socket programming which will be continously receiving data?
I am working on a daemon that I want to change some variables while its running. Is this possible?I want to implement a command line type interface for my daemon so I can send it commands that will change the current values of specific variables, and also be able tell the daemon to load/save a config file. The only thing I have found so far is passing arguments to a daemon, but that seems to be a one-time shot when your first starting it.
I have installed talk on centos, turned it on by editing xinetd.d/talk and setting disable=no.I have restarted xinetd (service xinetd restart) and verified that talk is configured to start (chkconfig --status-all).what am i missing? shouldn't either port 517 or 518 respond to telnet? what else can i do to get talk running?

I want to start a daemon as another user, but it doesn't seem to work. What I'm trying to do is run svnserve (subversion server) as the apache user.

I installed LAMPP a couple of weeks ago and was working fine. Today when I try to start lampp, it will only start MySql and ProFTPD. It says "XAMPP: Another web server daemon is already running." How can I find out where this other server is located and stop it?
Having installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?
I successfully installed the nessus. It was .deb file . first of all, I type "sudo dpkg -i Nessus-4.2.2-ubuntu910_amd64.deb". The output of this command was "You can start nessusd by typing /etc/init.d/nessusd start" That's why I type that command and I get " $Starting Nessus : ." There is nothing like interface of this software, when I try to search GUI from synaptic package manager. So What should I do ?

Whether NessusCleint and Nessus Server are available as two different packages or they have been merged into a single package.
Earlier there used to be 2 diff packages one for Nessus Cleint and other for Server. But now i was not abel to find any package for clinet and in the only package thats available on nessus.org also does not contain any cleint in it.
It's listening on the default nessus port 9390. I am trying to connect to the nessus server instance using Open-VAS Client. I have generated the client and server certificates, I have pointed the client at the User Certificate File, the User Key File and I have a CA cert. I have created a user account on the nessus server. The problem is that when I try and log in from the Open-VAS client it keeps saying it can't connect. Is there anywhere I can check to see if it's being caught in a firewall, or where I can see if the connection is even making it to the server..
