Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Reinstall Deleted GRUB Bootloader (Natty)

Jul 11, 2011

I got a system crippling virus on my windows installation. My recovery disks gave me the same problem. So I installed Win 7 enterprise using a disk my dad got from his work. The installation went smoothly. When I started my computer after it went straight to Win 7 without the GRUB bootloader (not the case with restore disks). Could somebody please help me with this issue because I cant stand using Windows for anything other than games much longer.

Fedora Installation :: Reinstall Grub After A Windows Installation Deleted It?

Jul 23, 2011

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

1. Find the partition where the Grub Stage1 is code...

Ubuntu Installation :: Recover Deleted Bootloader Files By Mistake (not GRUB)?

I cannot boot into by Ubuntu 9.1 machine.... Trying either GUI or rescue mode gives me the following error messages (which i copied by hand since they were in cli)

Code: mount : mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/64e5cb0d-058a-4a4c-af4b-7afb6427a72e3 on root failed : invalid argument

mount : mounting /sys on /root/sys failed : no such file or directory
mount : mounting /dev on /root/dev failed : no such file or directory
mount : mounting /proc on /root/proc failed : no such file or directory

Target doesnt have /sbin/init The only thing i remember doing before this is deleting some bootloader files... but they were on another disk so I didn't think that it would affect my ubuntu install. Guess I was wrong how I can recover my system?

Ubuntu Installation :: Add Windows 7 Directly To GRUB 2 Bootloader?

Anyhow, I'm a n00b to the Linux world, so I installed it on my Windows 7 desktop to dual boot. Current configuration is as such:160GB HDD with 3 partitions: Ubuntu Studio 10.10 on one, Win 7 on another, and the third is for storage.1TB HDD for extra storage. So far, all is well, but I'm not pleased with the default GRUB options and layout. It gives me 4 options to choose:

-Ubuntu Studio
-Memtest
-Memtest Debug Mode (or something to that effect)

Software :: Deleted GRUB And Cannot Reinstall It

Feb 6, 2009

I've forgot to add/make clear, as I have said this is a single OS system, if there is a less complicated fix that will leave me without grub (but with a bootable system) that would be fine. Something like
Code:
fdisk /MBR
but I understand that command is only for DOS, correct?

I've managed to delete/screw up my installation of GRUB. My hardware RAID controller had gone on the fritz and I was getting an operating system not found message during boot. Turns out I needed to reload the firmware for the card. I now believe the card is working fine however in trying to troubleshoot the problem (which I initially thought might have been related to GRUB) I have managed to hose GRUB, and I now see
Code:
Loading GRUB..

Error 15 at startup. I am running Ubuntu 8.0.4 LTS. I have been using an 8.10 desktop live cd for troubleshooting. Grub-install does not work when using the live cd. I have tried to follow directions given on this page: [URL]. However if I chroot to where my OS partition is mounted on the live cd:
Code:
chroot /media/disk
it does not recognize the grub command.

If I simply try:
Code:
sudo grub
find /boot/grub/stage1
it does not find them. If I try:

Code:
sudo grub
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
it checks for stage1 and does not find it. (This may be related to the fact that I am not chroot'ed to the correct OS partition when trying to run these commands, since, as I have mentioned before, I can't get the grub command to run after I chroot to my OS partition.)

When I initially started fooling around with grub I did not even have a boot partition, so I am not even sure that I had GRUB installed in the first place (this was simply a clean install of 8.0.4, not a dual boot system) but since then I must have screwed up the MBR by trying to reinstall/fix what I thought was a broken GRUB. I could not find the GRUB files on my computer, so I have downloaded GNU Grub 0.97 and unzipped it, and moved the entire contents into a /boot folder which I created, so I now have the proper /boot/grub/stage1 directory. (However I never ran any installation after downloading grub, I simply moved the files, perhaps this is the issue).

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Overriden By Old Windows XP Entry - After Reinstall Grub

Oct 7, 2010

I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is

1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.

2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.

3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.

4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.

5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting

6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows

7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.

"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?

Basically, I used a USB stick to run ubuntu 9.10 live, then tried to install to an external 500gb HDD connected with a Sharkoon Drivelink USB adaptor. The installation went fine, but I get a GRUB error 21 when booting a lot of the time. I figure this is due to the way in which the drive is connected. I am a complete noob, and I want to just ove GRUB completely and restore my Vista bootloader. Unfortunately, I do not have an installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one, and none of the others I have other PC's are the same version (home premium 32-bit).If you know of a way to fix the GRUB issue/sso I can use the external drive I would love to hear them too, but the main aim of this thread is to help me remove GRUB and restore the windows bootloader. Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Windows Entry From Grub Bootloader?

Jan 26, 2010

I currently dual boot and wish to know how to remove the Windows partition/drive while still allowing Ubuntu 9.04 to load safely as my main OS. I know how to restore windows partition by;

If MBR gets damaged boot from MS Windows Xp disc, Select "R" for "recovery console", select main windows installation drive (admin password usually nothing, just press enter) and type "FIXMBR" this will allow you to boot windows again, but Ubuntu partition will be unbootable and require installing ubuntu again to dual boot.

But this leaves Ubuntu partition Un-bootable as it removes the grub menu, how would I do the same for Ubuntu and make window partition un-bootable so I can remove it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Reinstall Went Wrong After Windows Wiped It Out

Jan 9, 2010

Some days ago I decided to reinstall windows, of course windows wiped Grub of the MBR. No problem. I booted of the live CD (9.10) and tried to reinstall grub, I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed before windows wiped grub. I tried the following tutorial: [URL] My fdisk -l output is the following: root@ubuntu:~# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000f2962
[Code]....

sda3 is my root partition, sda2 is the partition where all my media files are located. I mounted /dev/sda3 to /media/root and then I tried to reinstall grub with: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/root /dev/sda It came out with no errors, and then I restarted my computer. Grub started, but with a command line. It was the 1,97 beta-4 version. Since I'm quite unfamiliar with GRUB (or really technical linux stuff)

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.04 - Lost Grub Legacy In Windows Reinstall

Jun 19, 2010

I dual-boot ubuntu 9.04 and windows 7. I recently reinstalled windows, and it wiped grub-legacy off of my MBR. Reinstalling grub shouldn't be tough, right, especially with clear instructions? Anyway, I can't get anywhere with the official instructions here: [URL]. The first issue is that the current live CD has no program "grub" in terminal. I dug up an old live cd, but I couldn't get anything with the directions:

Find where Grub is. If this gives a few different answers then you will need to find the correct one, perhaps by trial-and-error.
find /boot/grub/stage1
That command didn't find anything, nor did some similar commands found on google.

So I'm really at a loss. What should I do?
-Can I install Grub 2 on my MBR? Will that work with 9.04?
-Can I access my 9.04 install, copy files to Windows, and then just format the partition and clean install 10.04?

Ubuntu Installation :: Basic Reinstall (Partition And Bootloader)

Apr 15, 2010

I installed Mint 8 on my sister's laptop (after her existing Vista, and I did so on a separate partition created during the normal setup process in Gparted) and she now wants to try out another distro and take off Mint, so how would I go about this? Would I boot from the distro's live CD, determine the correct partition, (I'm thinking of Gparted here) and then... what?

- Would I have to mark the partition to be deleted, delete it, then ask it to install on a similar-sized partition?
- Or would I not delete it, just mark to format it as ext4 or some other file system and it would then just install the OS of that live CD over the existing partition?
- What about the swap partition - does that need any changes at all?
- Will Grub/Grub2 et al normally be updated to reflect the replaced OS?
- I may do this on my own desktop machine in the future: I may want to consolidate all my existing partitions into one easy to manage massive partition. Is this also easy to do?
- How can I determine which OSs are on which partitions?

Ubuntu Installation :: Deleted, And Now Can't Reinstall Lucid?

Jul 13, 2010

I deleted Ubuntu off of my laptop, because I was having some issues with it (I had lost some of my icons in Software Center, couldn't access my Yahoo Mail etc..). I deleted it using this method. I then went into my Windows Vista OS, and accessed Disk management via Control Panel. The partition Linux was previously on was Unallocated, and I had a D partition which was Windows recovery. I then shrunk my C (main Windows) partition down. I deleted the D partition. So now I have the C partition, and a large unallocated partition. I was planning on installing Ubuntu from CD onto this unallocated partition. I am using the same CD I had previously used to install Ubuntu. My roommate was also using the same CD today to install Ubuntu on his computer. I know the CD works.

So when I inserted the Ubuntu CD it loaded the first couple of screens. It got to the purple screen where the install text would normally have appeared and then continues to load.... but the "do you want to install? etc..." text did not come up. It then loaded to a black screen, loaded back to the purple screen, reads the disc, keeps loading... and loading... and nothing ever comes of it.I tried again, this time when the first purple screen comes up, I hit enter. I get the language select. I then get the options. I click install Ubuntu. it then starts loading... and loading... black screen, purple screen, black screen with text... but nothing comes of it.My windows is working fine. I don't know why it won't install

Is there any way to simply remove grub? Does GRUB reside in a specific partition? Do I have to just delete the partition that has GRUB on it?The way my bootable partitions work is something like this.

1)Installed Vista

2)Installed Ubuntu

3)Thought I removed GRUB

4)Put in new HDD(1) and installed Win7 onto it

5)Put in another new HDD(2) and put another Win7 onto that (but I disconnected every other HDD so that the bootloader would be written onto the new HDD(2). When I have all my HDD's plugged in now, I get a GRUB load error (I think it's 21).
