I have win7 installed first and when I installed Ubuntu 10.4, I could not be given an option to choose partition manually but entire disk option only. My disk have 4 partitions, one of them is for Ubuntu. I don't want to erase Win7 existing first so how can I do?

Today I bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 and after much screwing around I have Ubuntu installed kinda. Installing Ubuntu is generally a breeze and I have three machines running 8.04 pretty much rock solid unless I fiddle with 'em, but; I download and boot from a 10.04 LTS cd and gets to the new purpley splash with a couple of icons down the bottom, then goes into endless full-screen terminal scrolling and the computer heats up. So I tried 8.04. Not much different. I try 10.10; same as 10.04 LTS. So I try the alternate installer rather than desktop but that crashes too. I finally find a website suggesting to run the alternate installer, hit F4 and choose 'failsafe graphics' (which wasn't there for me) and then F6 and select everything but 'Free Software Only'. Hey, worked and I get through the text based installer no problem, restart and I'm looking at a grub2 menu and can select Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Cool.
So I select Ubuntu but goes to a text based, command line Ubuntu. Hasn't loaded a desktop. I try to 'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' from the CD but after much scrolling tells me not there. It is telling me I have umpteen updates I should get and asking me to insert the CD, which is fine as the machine is not online, but then can't find what it's looking for.
So I've gotten this far. My router is not set as a DHCP server; all machines have static IPs which is why this new one is not online. Would the simple answer be to plug it directly into the internet gateway router and do the updates from there, ubuntu-desktop included?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have searched and read threads about the Bitlocker, grub and TPM issues that might show up, but I can't draw any conclusions as some information contradict each other. To make sure I don't screw up my pc as thought I need to make a new post.
At work I'm supposed to run Windows 7 and encrypt the win-partition with Bitlocker. I have installed Windows, turned on the encryption and it ties into the TPM. But as I am moving over to the *nix department I want to run Ubuntu as dual boot to check everything rusn fine with all the systems I need. Before I installed Windows I partioned the disk:
1,5 GB for system/bitlocker requirement
147 GB for Windows, C:
85 GB which is empty where I intend to install Ubuntu (not formated yet)
I boot into Windows with my bitlocker/TPM key on an USB-stick. Without the usb-stick the pc won't boot. Now, before I try to install Ubuntu I want to make sure to do it the right so I don't mess up the Windows installation or won't be able to boot the pc at all.
There seem to be several "schools" to this. Some suggest I should have installed Ubuntu first, then Windows and then encrypt. Some say, no worries just fire away and install since you are not planning to read the windows-partition from Ubuntu. Or an alternative, install but make sure to deactive the encryption during installation. Some say, install but make sure grub is installed in (multiple choices) location.
I tried unsuccessfully to install what I thought was windows in a virtualbox. After a ton of reading, I realized I don't actually have windows, but the Toshiba recovery discs that have windows on them. I was initially able to run Mint within Windows, but what I would rather do until I can buy windows (bleh) is dual boot. Will this recovery software allow me to partition the hard drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo we install Windows 7 home premium. Then in goes the Ubuntu Disk. Ubuntu seems to think that the windows 7 partition is one big lump of unallocated space. Tried multiple re-installs of Windows 7, all concluding the same. A bit of googling told me that it has something to do with partition tables or something. I even tried to use Gdisk to delete Gpt from the windows disk, which - as I have absolutely no idea what any of it means, - resulted in me screwing up the entire Win7 partition hence win7 not being able to boot anymore.
i've seen on the internet include a lot of technical garble which I don't understand. I've been using Linux for a while, but as far as partitioning and dual booting is concerned, it's always gone smoothly for me up until now
I bought a new computer (laptop HP DV6-1375dx) and I want to set a dual boot with win7, like I did with my desktop (clean install) However, my question is, with the new laptop all I have is the rescue disks vs. having the single OEM version. IS that a problem? for the desktop I followed lifehackers article "Dual boot win7 and ubuntu in perfect harmony." no problems at all.
what I am afraid of is formatting the new hard drive and the recovery partition and not being able to use the disks for some reason....am I over-reacting?
I've tried this a couple of times and can't load Ubuntu.Here's the scenerio, I have 3 partitions.
/dev/sda1 = ntfs (Win7)
/dev/sda2 = ext4 with the / mount point
/dev/sda3 = swap space
I've some tutorials where I need a /boot partition as well and others where I just need the root partition. At the bottom, there is a drop down box for you to select the device for boot loader installation. Those options include /dev/sda, /dev/sda1 (Win7) and /dev/sda2.
I need to do to get the dual boot working? My first thought is to install the boot loader onto /dev/sda but I'm unsure. It keeps booting Win7 and can't get the option to load Ubuntu.
I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) next to my Windows 7, in SSD hard drive. I'm able to boot Ubuntu with no problem, but my problem is my Windows. When I try to enter windows 7, all I get is a black screen with one blink char, and from there it does nothing...

I have the option of selecting between win7 and Ubuntu during start up, but when i select Ubuntu it goes to the first 2 lines of command and then restarts again. Windows 7 works fine. This is the second installation of ubuntu on this computer, the first attempt did the same thing (would not boot into ubuntu but win was fine) after i lost power. This time i shut the computer off for a full week while i was on vacation. I have switched between windows and ubuntu a couple of times and had no issue with this installation.

I used to have a win7 hp laptop. I decided to use ubuntu9.10. i installed it to my second drive (d after shrinking of c: drive to 100 gb. After installation of ubuntu, i try to boot win7 from grub screen, it goes to blue screen and restarting, not opening. But when i choose ubuntu, it is working properly. When i try to repair it, the win7 cd does not see any drive, only its x drive (where it boots). how can i start my win7 again. I am working on this 2 days.

Does ANYONE have a stable dual boot Win7 & Ubuntu 10.04 system? I have been trying for WEEKS to get a computer configured for my student lab. I get things going and everything seems to work for a few days. And then for no reason, the next time I reboot, Grub just seems to commit suicide.
Latest example. Win 7 & Ubuntu have been co-existing perfectly fine for about a week. Iow, I do something, then reboot, and the grub menu comes up - I select something and it boots my OS of choice for that session.
But today, I've been putting the last few touches on this computer before I use Clonezilla to copy it to all of the computers in the lab. You know - hard stuff like:
* set the default profile in Windows
* install a printer in both Ubuntu & Windows
* set a background image for the logon screens that have our "don't do anything bad" policy.
how there is nothing in there that should mess w/ grub or the boot loader, right? Yet I reboot the computer, I get to where grub should load - and BARF - I get the Bios splash screen again and the computer reboots on it's own. What the !@(#$&!@#$% is going on that this keeps happening to begin with?
I was trying to dual boot ubuntu on my desktop which has windows 7 already installed on it with raid 0. I have 2 500GB hard drive and when I boot from cd and try to install ubuntu it only detect one of my hard drives and it said I only have 500GB and there is no OS installed on this machine! I look online but I couldn't find any solution!

After getting the Silver Ghost all set up and purring like a kitten for my daughter, she now informs me she'd rather have Win7 HP instead of Win XP Pro SP3. Ubuntu and Win XP Pro are on separate HDD. Can I do a "clean install" of Win 7 HP on the Windows drive without screwing up GRUB? Or will I need to do the dance described at [URL]. I've had to modify Ubuntu because of conflicts between 10.04 and the Ralink 2780 (?) wireless-n drivers.
I have successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 on two older computers, one a laptop using wubi, and the other an older Dell 8250 using an install CD with a dual boot on one drive. Now I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit to my Windows 7 64 machine which has one C: drive with one partition and plenty of free space, with the goal of installing Ubuntu to a logical second partition on an external hard drive attached with a USB connection.
Unfortunately, after I boot from CD and start the install, I can't get past the install screen titled "Preparing to install Ubuntu", on which I have checked "Download updates while installing" and "Install third party software". I have three green checks for the install criteria and am connected to the internet. After I click "Forward", the spinning "busy" mouse icon continues to spin for about 20 minutes (I haven't gone longer than this) but does not progress me to the next screen. I can quit the install by clicking on "Quit".
I recently installed Ubuntu and thus am now dual booting it with W7 (which was installed first). These are the options I get with Grub:

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with this; why is there an option for Linux 16 and then for 14? At the moment I'm booting into Ubuntu using Linux 16. I'm a sticker for looks and would prefer reducing it down just to:

I would like to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I have Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD and Windows 7 Pro Live CD. Ubuntu is installed but Windows 7 isn`t. I have gparted installed. I found the following directions within Ubuntu documentation.
Master Boot Record backup and re-replacement
Back-up the existing MBR, install Windows, replace your backup overwriting the Windows boot code:
Create an NTFS partition for windows (using fdisk, GPartEd or whatever tool you are familiar with)
Backup the MBR e.g. dd if=/dev/sda of=/mbr.bin bs=446 count=1
Install windows
Boot into a LiveCD
Mount your root partition in the LiveCD
Restore the MBR e.g. dd if=/media/sda/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda bs=446 count=1
Restart and Ubuntu will boot
Setup grub to boot windows
I don't want to backup the MBR and restore as listed. I would rather use the Ubuntu Live CD to reinstall the GRUB.
How do I overwrite the MBR?
Do I use gparted and change the partition?
Do I create an NTFS partition as listed above?
Or what do I need to otherwise do to boot the Windows 7 Live CD so that it will install?
I'm completely new to Ubuntu, and haven't actually installed it yet, so my questions aren't concerned about how I use it, but rather the problems of installment and more importantly how to get started. The first thing I got a little question for is how to split my HDD into two partitions in order to install Ubuntu, as I will be dual-booting it with Windows 7. The second thing I want to ask about is how big the risk of corrupting my HDD is when installing Ubuntu, and whether I can take some precautions in order to reduce the risk of said thing. The third thing I'm gonna ask about is how to get drivers for my graphics and that alike. And fourth and last: Is it going to make a difference that I'm running it on a laptop?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora13 to dualboot w/ my windows 7. I quickly found out that I don't care for fedora. I was referred to Ubuntu, and put Ubuntu 10.04 on in VirtualBox. Lo and behold, I like Ubuntu a WHOLE lot more! So, I promptly went to Disk Manager (in win7) and deleted the Fedora partitions (told you i'm a noob). Of course that was a poor choice, and I was only able to get my computer to boot again by reinstalling f13. neat.

SO what i was thinking is go back to Disk Manager, delete partitions sda 3,4, & 5 (the linux ones), then reboot from the Ubuntu live disk? But I don't know what the sdb1 partition is?
I haven't done this in a long time, so I probably just need a quick refresher on a few things. I had to revert to Vista as my primary OS for more than a year to do CAD work, but now I finally have the freedom to move back to Ubuntu. I have my Win7 upgrade that I still haven't done (yes, I know I'm late to the party) and I want to update my Ubuntu 9.04 install to 10.10.
If I remember how to do this correctly, I should upgrade Vista to Win7 first, and then install Ubuntu second. I have two separate hard drives, so each OS will go on a separate one. The only issue I had in the past is that the drive with Ubuntu on it must be set as the primary boot device, otherwise GRUB wouldn't load. Is this all correct? I've been out of the Ubuntu loop for quite a while, are there any caveats to this process that I should be aware of?
I have a pretty good grasp on general computer works and I have read alot about the dual boot system and can do it with multiple variations of linux. My problem lies within my laptop, that I want to do a dual boot on (which is my only one with wireless). It is currently running Vista Home Premium-x86 and I would like the upgrade to Windows 7 Proffessional-x64. I have access to it but I have to keep Vista as is in order to keep Windows 7 as an upgrade which will have to be a custom install. This HD is dedicated to Vista and the backup partition as it is already.
I've read just about everywhere that you first have to do Ubuntu install and partition and then Windows, which makes sence, and then change the GRUB. However, I'm unsure about this case.
What would be the best way of going about making the partitioning scheme? I've already backed up everything possible so loosing that info is not the problem. Vista is the problem. My HD is a toshiba 320gbs- 2.5" form factor. My plan was to make 3 partitions. Windows, Ubuntu, and then the back up partion for Windows. I wanted to allocate Windows 150gb, Ubuntu 150gb, and then the other 20gb as back up for Windows.
I wanted to install ubuntu 11.04 alongside win7 on my notebook (with no optical drive). I created 2 primary partitions (one for win7 [ntfs] one for ubuntu [ext4]) and 2 logical partitions (one for swap one for general use for storage[ntfs]) by running ubuntu from my USB Flash disk and using gparted. First, I installed win7 without having any problem, then ubuntu also without having any (apparent) problem (I installed boot loader on MBR: the default setting). After the ubuntu installation is over, I was instructed to restart my computer as usual and win7 started without asking me which OS to boot. When I run ubuntu from my Flash disk and run gparted and selected the boot drive as the partition on which ubuntu was installed, I got the error saying "missing operating system". I suppose GRUB is misconfigured and that is causing the problem because nothing went wrong during the installation processes. How to configure GRUB by running ubuntu from my Flash disk. BTW win7 is working just fine.

Disk Utility says that it is "unallocated"! It had lot's of important info on it! Sorry for urgency, but it's important I get this OS and files back, intact.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am a major noob to FC12. I need to install Windows 7 Pro and FC12 dual boot. I first used the windows CD to create 1 250 Gig partition on my 500 Gig HD. Of course windows created the 100 MB system partition. I left the rest unpartitioned. Windows installed okay. I then booted to the KDE FC12 Live CD and installed FC12. I specified to use the Free Space remaining on the HD. The installation finished but now only boots into FC12 and does not prompt me for the OS I want to boot.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI figured I would begin delving more into the open source environment by dual booting fedora and windows xp pro. Windows xp WAS already installed on the laptop, so I went through the steps to get fedora installed. Everything appeared to be working fine. Fedora came up nicely, and then I tried to boot windows (using grub boot loader). The Windows splash screen appeared, making me think things were fine. But suddenly the screen went black, with the computer going through a restart. This happened every time I tried to boot windows. So I began scouring the web to see if someone had a similar problem. I tried numerous things, but none of them worked. Of them, this appears to have gotten me farther than anything:
Going into grub I changed: rootnoverify (hd0,0)
to: rootnoverify (hd0,1)
Everything else remained the same. When I made this change, the computer went through Ramdisk, and the Toshiba recovery tool. Then two dialog windows appear in secession.
The first stating: Windows cannot find c:inerrordialog.exe
The second stating: Windows cannot find c:inootpriority.exe
I stumbled across information about the recovery console tool. Well, since my laptop has an OEM installation, there is no recovery console tool. But eventually, I was able to find one that I could download. (In case anyone is interested, here is the link for the [URL]
I burned the image to a cd on another computer, and then attempted to boot to the console from the cd/dvd drive on the laptop. But the system crashed, with the customary blue screen. I was hoping to be able to execute the chdsk command to repair whatever damage there might be, but this problem occurs each time I run the image. Fortunately I backed stuff up before this. I'm just hoping that I won't have to go through the ugly process of restoring everything because it's a lot to restore.
I have a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 64bit preinstalled. The processor is core i5 and the machine has 4GB RAM. I freed 25GB of memory from my Hard disk and tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 (AMD). Everything went fine. I restarted and Logged into Ubuntu. It worked like a charm. Then I restarted to Windows7. This also worked well as expected.
But, when I rebooted again, I got a black screen saying that �No modules found. Press any key to restart�
When I press a key, it says �No operating system found�, probably after checking through a network (it printed lines starting with PXE).
I tried exactly in the same way with Ubuntu 8.04 in my machine, and this worked without any problem. The Bootloader was not corrupted after restarting from Windows. I noticed the problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. I feel like a problem regarding the bootloader version. AFAIK, 9.10 and 10.04 is using GRUB2 when 8.04 use the old version of GRUB. Will I have to switch to the legacy GRUB? (I would love to keep using GRUB2). If yes, I would like to know How.
I have a Dell ZINO HD and dual booted fine prior to 10.04. Grubs seems to not identify the Win7 OS partition correctly. According to Disk utility DEV/SDA1 is a DELL utility partition, DEV/SDA2 is the RECOVERY partition, DEV/SDA3 is my Win7 OS partition...and DEV/SDA5 is my Linux partition. Ubuntu boots fine... but with GRUB using SDA2 (HD0,2) for win7 I cannot boot to it... is there a fix?

Edit: I have a Sony Vaio FJ170 laptop with Phoenix BIOS version R0060X6 & a broken DVD Drive. The BIOS doesn't support booting from USB (it does have 'External Drive Boot' option, but my USB stick doesn't get listed under boot devices in BIOS when connected to the laptop).
A few days ago I upgraded to Windows7, then installed Lucid through WUBI. With the help of another thread of mine (here), I changed the default boot option & timeout of Windows to zero to directly boot into Ubuntu. So far it was good. But recently I tried to get back to Windows for some reason but could not succeed as the F8 key no longer brings up the Window's Advance Boot Menu.
Is there another way to restore the dual boot menu timeout to get back to the Windows installation. Or even better, is there some way to make a fresh install of Windows & Ubuntu side-by-side without DVD drive. I am only 14 and absolutely new to Linux. The network booting methods given on the Internet were too complex for me to understand. I like Ubuntu but also need Windows for programming C++ & Photoshop CS4.
I'm having serious troubles to install ubuntu-10.04.1. My raid is an hardware raid with intel chipset. Note that win7 is already installed and working with my raid. I made some space from windows, to install Ubuntu (40gb). First, I run the installer, everything seems to be fine. I choose to install Ubuntu were there is the most space free (sorry, I'm not sure about the real terms used there).
Then my partition with the vista loader appears. So the installer can see my raid, and should work fine (everything is detected correctly). But once I'm in the end of the installation (around 95%), a pop-up appears, and tells me that Grub can't install in /dev/sda and it's a fatal error. I can choose an another destination, but it doesn't seems to work.
I have Windows 7 x64 on a RAID0 Setup and have a separate 120GB Hard Drive and want to DualBoot with Ubuntu! How do I go by doing that seeing that LiveCD is not detecting Windows 7 Loader?
