Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Install Auto-deleted Backup Hard Disk?
May 2, 2011
My backup hard disk is connected by USB cable. After I installed Ubuntu 11.04 the disk had been wiped and a version of Ubuntu installed on it.I had forgotten to disconnect the external disk's usb cable before running the install in case something like this happened.I then just took whatever the installer said regarding partitions: I trusted it;and the installer's manual partition manager is a little too technical to be user-friendly. Mostly, I just trusted the automated partition manager to be making the right decisions for me.
The installer's auto-partition manager said it was erasing two partitions. I thought, oh that must include some sort of swap drive then. The auto-partition manager said it was using 500Gb of space. I thought, well there's more HD space on my desktop than I thought.I recently acquired the machine. It was a hand-down.The installer said do you want to install Ubuntu with, over or beside whatever existing versions there are. I said, over. I wanted a clean install since my attempt at making Ubuntu do an upgrade install had already failed. This was clearly stupid of me. But it was not as stupid as issuing an O/S installer that did what this one did.
The installer completely wiped my external usb backup drive. Not only that, but it installed another instance of Ubuntu on it. The install routine actually installed two instances of Ubuntu 11.04: one on my local HD and one on my now erased external HD.Just to rub salt in the wound, the update manager only updates the version that's running: the version on my internal HD. The version the installer copied over my backup data is redundant.I have fortunately a second backup of most essential data. But the external HD contained data that was not copied elsewhere. It has been permanently erased. It will probably possible to retrieve this data from original sources at a considerable inconvenience. I do not know at this time whether and how much of the data that was erased is now lost forever and what the consequences of the loss would mean.
When i try to install UBUNTU 11.04 it shows me the warning that there is no OS on my hard disk. But i have windows XP SP3 & UBUNTU 10.04 on my hard disk. Will all the files be deleted on my hard disk containing Windows XP if i install UBUNTU 11.04? How can i solve the problem?
My primary drive is 250GB and has the root, home and var (I'd read it's good to put var on a separate partition for MythTV which I'm planning on doing) on separate partitions. I have a second 1TB drive that I'll be using to backup the 250GB drive and also host less critical data. I've created two partitions on this drive, one 250GB and the other covering the rest of the drive. I'd like to move the Videos directory out of Home on the 250GB onto the 1TB drive but can't find a definitive way of doing this. Should I just follow this guide for moving the home folder to a new partition? Next question is when performing a backup of the 250GB drive how do I make sure it's going to the 250GB partition on the 1TB drive? Can the different partitions be mounted separately?
I used photorec to recover lost files and it brought up 70gb worth of files, when I was done looking through them I deleted these files. but these files still seem to be taking up my disk space. When I try to access my trash bin with root I get a message that reads...."The folder contents could not be displayed. sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": operation not supported." if I open my trash bin when I'm not in root, the bin is empty.
I'm using a dell XPS M1530 laptop with windows vista and ubuntu 10.04. Last week when I turned on my laptop I got an error saying internal hard disk not found. When I called dell support, I have been told that my hard disk is dead. I have few important stuffs in my hard disk for which I don't have any back. So I tried using ubuntu live CD to back up my data as in the link below.[URL]..I'm using ubuntu 10.04 live CD(64 bit). When I go to my places after booting from the live CD I can't see any partition showing my hard disk. I can see "Computer". When I go in it I can only see "File System" and nothing related to my partitions in my HDD. What should I do now? Do I need to mount my hard disk or is my HDD completely dead?
My ubuntu login window seems to be chrased and seems no way to restore it. I was planning to move ahead with reinstalling it but could any1 tell me how can i copy data to external hard disk. I am in Mannual restore section with promt staying at root@ubuntu :/#
just got Fedora 15 up and running and i have a 2nd internal HDD which i want to use for backups only, how do i format it exactly, mount point? file system? I've tried few options but when i try to point at it with Deja Dup i can't access it?
I looking for advice on what is the best way for backup on opensuse in case hard disk failure .
I have opensuse as server running samba (with some share folder) and mysql and web service. for mysql backup I run cron job using automysqlbackup script that run 3 times a day (morning , lunch , evening).
in case of hard disk failure, I wish to be put every things on new hard disk in 1or 2 hours.
My hard disk is failing and I amnot able to boot into the system! Currently I have logged into the system uing Live CD! Any way to compress and back up the data in my hard disk in an efficient way!
I got myself a dell laptop from the local computer store. Its a used machine with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. I want to load Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 though so I can do perl development. BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.
I copied my backup disk (3.2 GB) onto my hard drive using 10.4 in order to reorganize my storage, but then I could not trash it.In "file browser" a lock icon appears next to the folder name, and I always get the error message that it can not be put into trash in one step, would I like to delete it? I click on "delete" and no help.Further trial led to an error message that I don't have "permission." I'm the only user.I don't know anything about terminal and not one command, and usually when I ask for help, people provide "code" but no instructions on how to enter it or where.I'm the rawest beginner at terminal,
I'm having trouble getting Ubuntu installed on my desktop, I'm trying to get a dual boot going with Windows 7.
The Windows 7 install was fine and the OS is working with no problems at all. But when I try and install Ubuntu, the installer can't see any hard disks on the system. The first screen is OK where it checks for available disk space, but on the following screen there are no disks listed.
I can boot into the Live CD with no problems, and I can see the disk and create partitions with GParted, but when I go back into the install it can't see them. fdisk -l can see them as well code...
I tried using the all_generic_ide option as well because I saw that in another post but it didn't help. I'm not really sure where to go from here, I've looked in the BIOS and there's very few options relating to the HDD, and none of them seem relevant. There's no RAID configuration or anything weird like that.
The machine is an AMD 64 with a Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI motherboard. The HDD is a 250GB SATA2. The disk seems fine, and I've verified the install DVD as well, it seems to be OK (I tried both the 32 and 64 bit installers).
I am going to install the ubuntu 10.0.4LTS to my hard disk under windows XP, here is what i tried
1.down the iso:ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso file from ubuntun.com 2.down the unetbootin-win-549.exe and write the iso file to my USB disk 3.reboot my system to boot from usb disk 4.as i expect, every thing goes well util i got the err like this:
Installation Failed The following file did not match its source copy on the CD/DVD: /target/use/lib/openoffice/basis3.2/program/lib/plug_genli.so
As I have no blank cds handy right now, I had to go the way descirbed here:URL...But when I seect my partition and / (no sub dirs, an empty ext3 formated 6.8GB partition, exclusivly for that usage) it tells me there ws no installation media found and the search path got automagically adjusted to /imges/image.img.And ideas howto fix that? Or how to install fedora from harddisk (without big fuss)?
When I try to install 10.4 on my hard drive, I get all the way to the "Prepare Partitions" menu and there are no disks listed and all button are grayed out. I am installing on an EVGA X58 motherboard with Intel ICH10 and I have AHCI enabled. Does Ubuntu support AHCI? Do I need drivers to install?
after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died. The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops. One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. Now that other hard disk has error and will not work
I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible, can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.
I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?
Subject: grub no auto update new hard drive.doc Date: 07/26/2010 03:48:45 PM grub no auto update new hard drive. When installed 11.2 on Western Digital VelociRaptor 150 GB hard drive and now installed 300 GB VelociRaptor drive. Your grub does not update correctly to identity the op systems after the new drive is imaged; youre kidding right? I request that you provide the instruction for correcting this; you must have and auto update for grub.
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted. The hard disk with the problem is:
Code: $ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb [sudo] password for brian:
Firstly I've never (successfully) upgraded before using update manager -d but I've only tried once. I'm on 10.10 at the moment but I want to make a full disk backup using Acronis and try out 11.04 beta 1 so if I can't boot (like with the 11.04 Alpha 3) I'm ok.
What I want to know is if I upgrade to beta 1 it will install new things and settings, if beta 2 is released and I upgrade to that (after having beta 1 installed) will it overwrite all the settings again? Or will I be able to spend time set beta 1 up nice how I want it (if it works) and just smoothly upgrade gradually to final 11.04 keeping it pretty much exactly how I want it?
Also with the software sources, I understand I need to disable the ones I manually added before updating from 10.10 then to re-enable them, but how do I re-enable them for Natty as they are currently for Maverick? Do I just change the word Maverick to Natty, or is it better to remove and re-add them for natty? And do the authentication keys need updating or are they ok? I don't really know a lot about the keys.
1 more thing (sorry) will an upgrade overwrite any settings I have e.g. etc/fstab, sudoers, things like that? I know when you upgrade it gives you an option for some things e.g. keep or replace, if I keep old settings from maverick does it matter? Or does 11.04 add new lines/things to these files if I choose replace?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm pretty new been using ubuntu as my only OS for couple months now and most of my time has been spent tweaking settings and I don't want to lose them, or do a clean install when 11.04 final is released as I won't ever be able to remember them all.
