I have upgraded this system 3 or 4 times from Lucid to Meerkat without any problems. After a nasty update to my Natty installation I have re-installed Lucid and am upgrading to Meerkat, then on to Natty again. However when I try to upgrade I am getting the error below.
I've tried to upgrade my FC8 on Presario F700 series laptop to FC 10 and facing some issues. I've a live CD (i386). Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -
1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm
2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm
im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.
7 months using Linux , 2 months in this Forum. I'm searching for answers too long. My vga card crashes to a black screen with 178 and 183 drivers searching and executing threads for this problem does not fix nada.

i'm running a fresh install of 10.10 with a casper-rw partition off a usb drive.
Last nigth I upgrade my system to squeeze and it whent well except for grub-pc and udev. If i try to upgrade now udev will not install do to problems with the kernel version and grub-pc can't seem to find the boot image.
I just upgrade from 10.3 to 11.4. Everything went fairly smoothly and most things are still working execp nfsserver

I've done the ordinary sources.list update (lenny to squeeze) and Code: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install dpkg apt aptitude.sudo aptitude full-upgrade However, udev failed to install, and I used..Code: touch /etc/udev/kernel-upgrade and did full-upgrade again. Everything was going fine, I went through several package configurations and suddenly, after 30-40 minutes of "Unpacking Setting up." I just heard two system beeps and got an error similar to a kernel panic. The SYSRQs did nothing. Did a hard reboot.I got two kernels in GRUB now. + the GRUB2 chainloading option. Used this one and got Code: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block It's all the same with the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel kernel panic. Using the older kernel didn't fail on the boot up, but showed many UDEV related errors and logging in was impossible - all I get were segmentation faults. Forgot to mention it - my FS is Reiserfs
I've burned the installation media on several different types of media, and i'm getting an error after the 3 bars load (first screen). I've tried the verify and boot option, and it's fine. I'm trying Fedora 10 on a studio xps 1340. The error messageet isCE hpet increasing min_delta_ns to xxxxx nsec twice, thenForce XPAon: 0about 15 times, thenCE hpet increasing min_delta_ns to xxxxx nsec a few more times, this pattern alternates and the xxxxx keeps increasing, starting at something like 10000 and jumping by 50000 each time it reposts.
while upgrading packages in my ubuntu 10.4 i m receiving following exception

I have an Asus Eee running the factory installation of Linux. Xandros, I think. Whatever it is, it's not letting me update Firefox, so I'm trying to replace it with Ubuntu Netbook. I made a bootable USB stick according to the instructions at [url], and I know the problem isn't with the USB because the Windows machine I'm currently on wants to know if I want to try out Ubuntu or install Ubuntu or learn more, but when I put the stick in the netbook, nothing happens, and when I reboot with the stick in the netbook, nothing happens. The netbook's set to boot from a USB if there's one present; I checked. Is the problem that the stick's only supposed to work on Windows?
I had an Ubuntu 10.10 installation that ran fine for around a month or so. I decided to go out and try to install aptosid (formerly known as sidux) as a dual boot. I couldn't get the desktop to boot in the LiveCD and kept getting an error saying that the nouveau module could not be loaded. I rebooted and at the main LiveCD screen, I added xmodule=vesa xres=1440X900. I was able to get a 1024x768 resolution. I decided that I really didn't like aptosid, so I shut it down and took out the LiveCD. When I booted back into Ubuntu, my resolution changed down to 640x480 for some reason. I decided to remove the proprietary nVidia driver I had installed via jockey. Once it was removed, I restarted. Now, I see no startup splash or a login screen - my monitor just goes to sleep.
I have all my files backed up already, so I decided to pop in my Kubuntu 10.10 LiveCD to install that. Once I choose the "Start Kubuntu" option, my monitor goes to sleep. I tried putting in Linux Mint Debian Edition LiveCD to see if that would work, and I had the same issue. After this, I went for the nuclear option and installed Windows 7 to see if it would wipe out any memory of my Linux drivers from the system. The Windows drivers for my card worked fine, so I decided to put the Kubuntu LiveCD back in and got the same problem. I am currently running a Partition Magic LiveCD, but could only boot into it using the Xvesa option instead of Xorg. My video card is an nVidia 9800 GT - and it has always worked in the past.
Well, this new issue when installing the new lucid relase iso seems to be closly related to my previous bug report refering to suspend and hybernate failing to power off, freezing at and of suspend/hybernate preperation. now what happens... installing ubuntu lucid 64bit, all gos perfect. finally i get the window begging me to reboot. i click reboot. window finsihes its work and disapears. that's it. screen is frozen with its purple background. no ctrl+alt+del, nor anything else works. only reset button. so it failed ro reboot like it fails to pwoer off for hybernate or suspend. on same machine this does not happen with karmic. it is a soley ubuntu lucid problem. any suggestion how to track that down? p.s. in my original thread and bug report i provided a pm-suspend.log that went all good till the last statement "powering off".
I'm not certain that my problem is due to an Ubuntu upgrade, but I'm running out of options. My private Wordpress installation was working fine, including being able to upgrade plugins and WP versions within the application. I've been doing all of the Ubuntu updates as I'm notified. I'm still on 9.10, but was planning to upgrade to 10.04 shortly - as soon as I get the Wordpress installation upgraded in fact.
But the plugin upgrades, and the Wordpress upgrades, are both failing with fopen errors, like so:Download failed. Could not open handle for fopen() to [URL]..After checking everything else I can think of (including temporarily making the wordpress directory hierarchy 777), and looking at the php.ini file, I wonder if some Ubuntu update is messing things up. Or if I've somehow changed something else that is causing the problem.
I've tried several times over the past day to install Ubuntu Netbook using Wubi but it kept on failing after the download of the ISO. After checking the log, I notice that it complains that 10.04 != 10.04.1 regarding the version. For the netbook, the ISO downloaded is indeed 10.04 while the installation title says it is installing 10.04.1.
I am sure that there is an easy fix for this in Wubi. I've used Wubi in the past and I am quite happy about it. This is not the proper place for it, but I'ld like to see the installation type support VirtualBox too - i.e., the Ubuntu setup installed by Wubi should be able to run inside VirtualBox.
I am running a 64bit 10.10 with gnome. Its pretty much a fresh install. I saw a project called CAINE, it looked neat so I'd thought I'd give it a try, something in the installation mucked up. Now when I open the Software center I get a message telling me "Items can no be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired" I click repair and I get this error message: E:I wasn't able to locate file for the caine-from-deb package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.:So I thought I'd give it a go using synaptic package manager, it gives me these error messages: E: caine: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2 E: caine-from-deb: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2.I am currently unable to install or update any software at the moment so I really need help to get this fixed.
I'm struggling to know where to look for a problem. A newly upgraded machine uses the following main parts:
Asus M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3 motherboard AMD Phenom II X2 560 processor 4GB Crucial high speed memory Onyx OCZ 32 GB SSD
Every attempt at installing Ubuntu 10.10 fails with a message about copying from the CD to the disk. The CD has been burned again, and can be run as a live CD on a different machine. The motherboard has had the BIOS upgraded to the latest version. Swapping the Onyx OCZ SSD for a Seagate Barracuda 320 GB (taken from a working system) fails in the same way, although it takes a little longer.
A basic install of Windows XP worked, apparently without problem. Running the Ubuntu 10.10 live CD does not work properly - attempting to start Firefox causes a message to appear in the bottom bar saying it is starting, but it disappears again without Firefox actually starting. (Works OK with the same CD on an older machine).
i am trying to build a EC2 image using VMBuilder and it keeps failing. i read and it seems that i need to install GRUB version 1 instead of 2. i tried to find documention on how to replace it but no luck. i am no expert in Linux.
I just installed Karmic Koala on one of my hard harddrive. The other disk has Windows XP. Previously I had a working dual-boot setup, but after problems with Ubuntu I reinstalled it. On booting, I get the following:
There is no Grub menu which might allow me to drop to a Grub prompt and evaluate. This occurs whether I boot with the Ubuntu harddrive or re-set the BIOS to boot with the Windows harddrive. If I boot with a LiveCD, I see that both my Ubuntu and Windows harddrives exist and are readable; the Ubuntu was indeed wiped clean and reinstalled; the issue is with the boot process. How can I set this up to boot?
It's been quite a run-around trying to get the Nvidia driver working.I have already followed a lot of instructions, at least onceI still get caught at "the pre-install script failed". When I looked at the script itself, it says it's "triggering an error status to prevent the installer from overwriting ubuntu's nvdia packages."Some say this script can be ignored, but it seems to be the only thing keeping my install from working. Some say install from root prompt, some say GUI OK. Some say d/l from NVIDIA, some from repository. I have been doing root, init 3, removing old drivers, etc..
I really like qBittorrent.I would really love it if it worked in the unity desktop. There's a few issues with this--
1. No icon in system tray.
2. No access to latest version in software center.
I've looked around in the forums and tried to "whitelist" all apps--I don't know what that means and don't personally understand why ALL apps weren't whitelisted in the first place. That was unsuccessful.
And it won't boot, so I checked the drive with gparted on my desktop, and get some errors about invalid block sizes and corrupt partitions. When I try fdisk, it lists an EFI partition as I would expect, and then another partition with the right size, but its listed as type empty. I also get some invalid size errors there. This happens with an older iso I have successfully used in the past. When I run fdisk on the ISO file, I get the same errors as the USB drive. Here's the output [code]
I think my issue is with the message about 2048 vs 512 byte block sizes. I tried setting up partitions on my drive and just copying data to them from the iso. This makes the BIOS recognize the USB disk and it tries to run the bootloader, but fails since the symlinks are messed up copying that way. I've tried a few different boxes (all running sid) and I get the same results on all of them.
I just installed Debian Squeeze onto my desktop and when i try to access it I get a dialog displaying:Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:Error opening '/dev/sdb1': Permission deniedFailed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Permission deniedPlease check '/dev/sdb1' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions, and the mounting user ID. Skype doesn't recognise my plugged in mic and earphones. I can hear sound through the headphones from other programs. DVD burner burnt a cd for me, but seemed to pause at around 15-20% and sat there for half an hour. When I ejected CD it jumped to 100% stating it had finished. The CD was a Live Install CD for Ubuntu, which didn't work. I get I/O errors when trying to install from CD on start up. I'm guessing it didn't burn properly or isn't being read properly. I'm generally unsure of what drivers are installed for all of my hardware. Not sure if there is an auto-detection program in or for Fedora that can help, or if I will have to stop being lazy. Skype, like mentioned before. I'm not sure if this is a software issue or driver issue.
Mozilla failing to open. When clicking on the Firefox icon it wouldn't start. Shows an icon at bottom of monitor on toolbar, but disappears after 5-10 seconds with no browser opening. I had recently installed a VLC player with plugin for Mozilla while logged in as root. Wondering if I messed this one up myself? I stumbled onto updates and it had Mozilla install in there. It works again. I'm sure it won't be reoccurrent. If I were to post system specs and issues I'm having, would someone on this forum be willing to guide me through or point me in the direction of having my laptop fully operational? All drivers basically. It works as is, just not completely
I added the "@clustering" and "@kvm" keywords to my ks.cfg file but during installation, an error about not being able to find either of these packages popped up and it wasn't installed.
I do see the Cluster and VT directories in my redhat_es5.4 directory along with the Server directory. The rest of the files install just fine.
In doing some net and forum searching, I find a reference to a base.repo file that lists the directories but I'm not sure if it's related to creating a yum repository or if not, should it have been created in the redhat_es5.4 directory.
While I've built kickstarts for several years and am comfortable with the file, this is the first time I'm working with rpms outside the main Server path.
