Has Ubuntu a tray icon for updates when this are available? In 9.10 and now in 10.04 when an update appears in Update Manager nothing appears in task bar. (Like Windows Update or Mint).I have enabled the options for this in Update Manager Settings... (Search Updates daily) but.
when i start my skype account after login, I minimize and on the task bar appear the Icon , but few minute after, the icon disappear from the task bar. If I check the process (wy typing ps -aux | grep skype) i found the process of skype, but I'm unable to get it in foreground (nor with alt-tab key. I was unable to see the skype icon).so every time I have to kill the process ad start it again.
F12 completely patched. Can someone provide some insight into the various volume controls available and why they seem to conflict with each other? The incognito application that loads up on the task bar as a speaker icon keeps getting changed. I try to nail it at 100% but it keeps getting altered - how I don't know. BTW - I say its an incognito application as there is no way to identify what piece of software it actually represents. I assume it's the gnome-volume-control-applet, but there is no way to know for sure as it is devoid of any identification. I run rhythmbox and its volume control also gets altered from where I attempt to set it.
I assume that gnome-volume-control-applet is the master to set a limit on what anything else can do. I then assume that rhythmbos's volume control operates within the envelope that gnome-volume-control-applet allows. Both assumptions are probably wrong as nothing makes any sense. Maybe all the pulseaudio stuff is also in there somewhere messing with the controls, but I see no user space apps to influence pulseaudio. To top it off, I can push the volume control on rhythmbox around from 100% down to 16% and there is no discernible change in volume. When I hit 14% there is a halving of volume, and from there on down to 0% seems to function linearly as expected. Why is there this non responsive range between 16% and 100%?
I run Ubuntu 10.10, recently I got this problem. if I open more than one program, and click on icon of them on task bar to switch between them, KDE crash and restart with log in screen. now since 2-3 days this restart also happening when I ALT+TAB to switch between running programs .
This has been bugging me for a few weeks now all of a sudden i lost my email icon chat etc and the volume icon in the top notification area. i have tried deleting and re adding the notification area back but they are still missing. also sometime when i boot up i loose my minimize and close window icons on the windows??? not sure if this connected i am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a dell vostro 200
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on a Toshiba Netbook NB300. After performing an upgrade I find myself unable to connect to my wirless network and have lost the wifi icon in the task bar. Ethernet connectivity is however working.
iwconfig shows: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off ifconfig shows

I need to take to bring back wireless connectivity to my netbook and restore the wifi icon to the task bar.
I'm trying to add .desktop file for my application but I'm stuck with very strange problem.I created 48x48 icon for my program called etmmanager.png.I created .desktop file according to specifications:
Code: [Desktop Entry] X-SuSE-translate=true Categories=Application;Utility;X-SuSE-TimeUtility; Comment=ETM Manager for time logging Exec=etmmanager code....
My problem is that icon is not working in menu! I can find my program in Utilities->Time->ETM Manager and this is what I wanted, but there is no icon for the program.
It starts working if I specify absolute path in etmmanager.desktop file like Code: Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/etmmanager.png About my system - Opensuse 11.1 KDE 4.2
After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 all of a sudden, the task manager or task bar, keeps changing length. The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.
Anybody knows how to fix overlapping tasks in KDE system taskbar? Here System Monitor overlaps with digiKamWorkaround to rearrange icons - start any new task.Sorry for taking real photo of the screen. When I do PrintScreen KSnapShot task appears in the list and makes all task to rearrange. The resulting screenshot contains already fixed view.
How do you launch a task from a terminal command line interface and it not be kill'ed if you close the terminal window. Like if I run jedit I type jedit & which launches jedit as a backgorund task. But, if I close terminal window, jedit dies to. How do I laucnch jedit and completely divorce it from the terminal task?
I keep getting the updates icon popping up asking me to install software that is either already installed (Adobe Flash Player 10.1) or something that fails when I actually try to install is but I am sure it is also already installed (RPM Fusion Repository Config -free and nonfree). When I try to install the RPM Fusion packages it asked me for a Software Signature and then fails with the following message: failed to install signature: Traceback
[code]...
I have the flash player installed already and I am sure I already installed RPM Fusion. how can I resolve this and stop it from constantly asking me to install these packages?
I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), and my System Monitor (a.k.a. Task Manager) has stopped working. I had been using the graphical version of the app because it was easier and faster for me to deal with. I know that there is a command line solution for this, but I also know it involves having to know the task number of the program I want to kill (I've got a game that I love to play, but only closes cleanly about 10% of the time). I've posted a couple of screen shots to show the errors... The first one is the error message itself (I have to hit 'OK' on this twice to clear it), and the second one is the resulting empty window of the System Monitor
I have my task list in evolution (mainly so it can sync with my phone and online task list) but I always forget to look at the task list. Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.
It's not possible to select a thread prefix and post a new thread with no mouse/touchpad working, so could someone post this as a separate thread:Title: Ubuntu 10.04 - Touchpad not working after last night's updates.Message: Dell 1510 - touchpad not working, touchpad buttons neither, after last nights upate
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and after installing the recommended updates yesterday, my printer, which was working perfectly, no longer works. I tried reinstalling it by downloading the appropriate driver, but it still won't work. Here is the error log:

After suspending my computer, the battery icon doesn't work anymore (nothing happens when I put my mouse over it and it doesn't detect wether the computer is plugged in or not). Also, the brightness of the computer doesn't change when I plug/unplug the computer. All of that works fine before i suspend the computer.
They seem to be stuck on the GNOME default icon set for it, I have tried using the Elementary icon theme for Empathy but to no avail, I have also tried completely removing and then installing the application, removing the folder in USR/Share and repeating. Nothing.. Can anyone help me get either Ubuntu's icon set for Empathy or Elementary's working?
I've been using Ubuntu 11.04 for a couple of weeks now, and I can't seem to get notify-send to work correctly (yes, I did install libnotify-bin)
Yesterday, I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 and the first thing I did was install libnotify-bin to try notify-send on a fresh install.
It worked fine after the reinstallation until I did sudo apt-get upgrade. Immediately after the updates finished, I tried notify-send again and it failed to display a notification.
No error messages, command exits correctly, no indication of anything going wrong except no notification pops up.
I was wondering if anyone else is having trouble getting updates. I ran the software update out of the control center when I first installed 11.4 with the gnome desktop.I ran the yast online update and got what was on there, but now it just gives me error messages, basically it's stating it can't connect to the repositories.
One day, I was altering the size of the icons to make them smaller. I first made them larger (to 150%), and then shrunk them down to 66%. I did this through Nautilus while being in the /var/www folder. The Desktop icons resized down to the 66%, as well as all other icons. However, the icons in the /var/www folder remained large (at the 150%). I've tried changing it, and no change occurs in the particular folder.
I just got new netbook for christmas and so I promptly set it up with a dual boot system cause Windows 7 starter is garbage.Anyways after ditching the Netbook Remix because quite frankly I found the Unity setup to be quite garbage. Nothing worked the way I wanted it to and I found it quite annoying. So I ditched it for the regular desktop version. I quickly found that the battery indicator didn't work.
I removed and re added the indicator panel. Nothing. killed the gnome panel and restarted it multiple times. still nothing. Restarted multiple times. nothing. I even reinstalled gnome-power-management to no avail. I also installed laptop-mode-tools and nothing has worked. I went into the power settings and set it to always display the icon and it simply showed a lightning bolt as if there was no battery and it was a tower computer.
I am using ubuntu 9.10 and the vmware player 3 was working fine. But after the kernel headers updated to 2.6.31-22 the vmware player shows the pop up and says it cannot find the kernel headers. But actually, the linux-headers-2.6.31-22-generic are installed. I tried to re-install the vmware player but with no sucess. Is there any way to correct this error.
I've been running Maverick 64bit fine on my Dell M1330 laptop until a couple of days ago. After the latest updates (I guess to kernel 2.6.35-24-generic), sound stopped working properly. The sound indicator applet tells me that the sound system is not responding. The login sound doesn't play anymore.
On the other hand Rhythmbox plays and I can hear the music. I can adjust Rhythmbox volume but not the global volume (as neither the sound indicator applet nor the multimedia volume keys on my laptop work).
Code: $alsamixer it works flawless. Here is what I get if I try to run pulseaudio from the terminal
Code: $ pulseaudio E: module-ladspa-sink.c: Master sink not found E: module.c: Failed to load module "module-ladspa-sink" (argument: "sink_name=ladspa_output.mbeq_1197.mbeq
My server was set to automatically install updates, and stopped working while I was away. When I got back to it, it now has a boot menu to choose between kernel versions, with no default or timer. So I pick one, and there are heaps of other problems. the /home partition isn't mounting, despite the fstab being unchanged. I can mount it manually using mount with no problems /var/syslog has nothing since April, and isn't updating when I reboot, so I'm not sure what I can cut and paste to here for you all to look at. The networking isn't running, in fact, most of the network interfaces aren't even showing up.That's just what I've identified so far. I have no idea where to start. I can't find anything wrong other than the fact it's not working.I can't copy and paste any output at this point, because I can't ssh,
