Ubuntu :: Create A Dvd That Contains Server Desktop And Alternate Install Opptions - And All Four Main Desktop Environments (gnome - Kde - Xfce - Lxde) And Unity?

Aug 12, 2011

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Debian Multimedia :: Xcompmgr 'master' - Rounded Window Borders Don't Draw And Redraw Properly When Using The Terminal (gnome-terminal And The LXDE And Xfce Ones)

Aug 26, 2011

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.

Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

OpenSUSE :: XFCE Settings Applets - Documentation

Apr 21, 2011

When I click on "HELP" in some of the XFCE settings applets, I get an error. It looks as if the software is looking for the help under "/usr/share/doc/xfce-utils/" whereas the documentation is really stored under "/usr/share/doc/packages/xfce-utils/". I can add a symlink as a workaround. But before I do that, I thought I should ask whether there is a configuration file somewhere that allows setting the documentation path.

OpenSUSE :: Switch Desktop Environment From LXDE To XFCE?

Nov 13, 2010

I have a laptop that is a little bit older, and OpenSUSE was running pretty heavy on it with the KDE and Gnome desktops (I installed Gnome, tried it for bit, then wiped it and did a clean install with KDE).

Since it was so sluggish on that laptop, I grabbed a couple live CD's of OpenSUSE with the LXDE and XFCE desktop environments. The XFCE disc doesn't seem to boot at all, which I tried in a couple different computers, and on Virtualbox with the same result.

LXDE worked fine and I installed it just fine, with hopes of switching over to XFCE later, as I like it better. This brings me to my question, can someone tell me what the easiest way is to switch from the LXDE desktop to XFCE?

I found a page in the OpenSUSE site that appears to be dedicated to XFCE, here is the link:

Xfce - openSUSE

I went there, I clicked on 11.3 on the right hand side, and then clicked on the 1-click install option for X11fce, the first option. It opens the YaST software manager and I followed the prompts, and it finished. All of the packages were installed, except XDM.

I was expecting that the software would install and configure the desktop, and I'd reboot to see an XFCE login. This was not the case.

what the correct, and safe way would be to switch desktops?

Ubuntu :: Applets In Gnome Panel Are Garbled Up

Mar 9, 2011

The clock applet and indicator applet in Gnome garble up from time to time. I have 2 Ubuntu installations at home and several others at work, some 32-bit and some 64-bit, all exhibiting the same issue occasionally. I think it's a bug in the Gnome panel. In the attached screenshot you can see an example of how the time in the clock applet is garbled up.

It's not always the clock that is affected, some other times it's the login name, the weather, or the shutdown button... Worst case, the shutdown button becomes totally invisible preventing me to log off (workaround: use the three-fingered salute).

Software :: Gnome Panel Applets Keep Moving?

Nov 2, 2010

It seems like every few times that I log into Fedora 12, running Gnome, my Panel Applets will move, re-arrange, or get deleted. For example, this morning when I logged in, my Multiple Desktop Selector was gone. I had to re-add it to the bottom panel. Yesterday when i logged in, my top panel had its applets re-arranged, instead of A B C, they were in the order B C A with an extra space at the end.

Any ideas what is going on here? Or anyone experiencing the same thing? Or is this just the Gnome applet location uncertaintly principle?

Debian :: Awn Applets Do Not Work After Recent Update

Aug 19, 2011

I have been dsitro skipping around. Reinstalling the new versions every six months, only to find more major drawbacks recently with ubuntu. I fixed a major problem with adobe flash being majorly slow on my hardware by following the debian flash guide, what a life saver. I now love my linux system, flash was always a pain, made me appreciate windows. I thought I might try a rolling release distro (PCLinuxos is pretty good but I couldn't install office in wine). I heard about the speed of debian - the mother of all distros. But when I tried debian stable, I had hard crashes so I decided to try Wheezy instead.

Now I seem to be sitting pretty. With one exception, the latest 0.41 update of the AWN window manager breaks the awn applets. I have locked the version at 0.4 by going back to the stable branch that worked. But I would rather not have to check to see if the next updates is going to break them again. There were some more updates recently to awn-applets not sure if they fixed this problem. Why was this update released in the first place, when it breaks down awn almost completely ? without the applets it's almost useless. It's probably something simple like changing the directory but still annoying.
