Ubuntu :: Firefox Takes 30 Second To Start , Used To Be Instant / Resolve This?

Oct 16, 2010

My Firefox used to start instantly, or at least near instant, but since yesterday it took about 30 sec to launch. Opening subsequent windows is near instant, but once all windows are closed it would take a long time to open again.

When I open it up in a terminal, it has absolutely no error message, clean start up and shutdown.

I turned up the CPU clock speed from 1.2GHz to 2.0GHz and it doesn't seem to help. Other programs starts fine too, so I kind of ruled out performance issue.

Yesterday I also tinkered with compiz settings and also installed the cairo dock and some media codecs. But I can't pinpoint when does it happen exactly, I also struggle to draw any relationship if there is any. And if it matters Firefox is 3.6.10 and Ubuntu is 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Can Not Find Grub Menu / Resolve This?

Mar 20, 2010

My parent's hard disc is failing and I am trying to boot into single user mode to run fsck. If I try to enter through terminal with "sudo init 1" the screen goes black and the computer freezes. I tried to enter single user during start-up with ESC, but the machine still boots straight into a normal session. I was going to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to for the machine to display the grub menu option but I do not seem to have a menu.lst under /boot/grub. Does anyone have any ideas as to where this file might be or an alternate way to enter single user mode?

Ubuntu :: Windows Won't Boot / Goes Back To Grub - Resolve This?

Mar 15, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire 5810T which came with Windows Vista. I prefer Ubuntu but I need some windows applications so I dual-booted Vista and 9.10.

There was a few minor problems with the Vista side but I didn't use it enough to care. A few weeks ago Vista would not open some programs and others would shut down automaticly and some would open but not connect to the internet like they should. This happened on my previous laptop and when I used the system recovery discs to restore the computer all those issues were gone.

I used the recover discs to restore everything to its original factory settings, it said everything was successful so I restarted. My computer got to the grub menu but when I chose Windows Vista as my operating system it goes black for half a second then returns to the grub menu.

I can get into Ubuntu fine, and I can see the Vista files when I mount the drive to Ubuntu. When I look at the files everything is the way it should be if I had restored it but I can't boot it..

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Geom Error After 10.04 Upgrade / Resolve This?

May 22, 2010

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. Previously, I had a dual booting system where GRUB allowed me to boot 9.10 or WinXP. I have two hard drives - an 80 GB drive with XP and a 1 TB drive with Ubuntu.

During the upgrade I chose to upgrade my GRUB version. I only selected to install grub on the Ubuntu drive. I didn't work - I couldn't even get GRUB to load. It just gave the error: the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found.

So I reconfigured GRUB and installed it on both drives. Now GRUB loads and I can boot 10.04 just fine, but I can no longer boot XP.

What command should I run to give you a glimpse of my system? Would that help diagnose this?

General :: Grub Freeze And Trouble Installing / Resolve This?

Feb 23, 2011

I just bought a Intel D525MW ITX board, a PicoPSU and a stick of 2GB ram.
I burned the new stable debian netinst to a disk and booted it up from a usb cdburner. At this point I had a usb keyboard and a usb kingston pen drive (temporary / ) connected. The computer would freeze whenever I chose a menu item. I rebooted a couple of times, same thing. I disconnected the usb pen and were finally able to start a graphical install. I quickly reconnected the pen and the install went fine as far as I could see.
Now. When I boot from the pen it just freezes showing "GRUB lading. Welcome to GRUB!" and a blinking underscore.

I were able to boot the usb pen on my Alienware laptop just fine - although it wanted a reboot after it ran a fsck.

Hardware :: Can't Install Boot Loader - Both Grub And Lilo Failed / Resolve This?

Jan 17, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721. Recently I replaced Windows Vista Home Edition (32 bit) with Slackware Linux 13.

Lilo wouldn't work, when I turned on the computer it printed "Li" and then 20 lines of 090909... and then the computer would hang up. So I just used my Slackware-boot-flashdrive-thing that I created during installation to boot my computer and told myself that I would fix it later.

Also, when I installed, cfdisk (or it might have been sfdisk) complained that /dev/sda did not contain a valid MS-DOS partition table. fdisk still worked, so I used it to create a new table, and cfdisk worked fine and the installation went along normally.

I reinstalled Slackware about two days later (I realized that I had installed the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit). Lilo still didn't work.

I thought it might be something wrong with the Slackware DVD, so I downloaded and attempted to install about 4 different distributions. None of the CDs would work. The computer would start up, Linux would start to load, and the computer would freeze.

Xubuntu was the only distro I had that I could get to install. Halfway through the installation, (Surprise!) I got an error, something like "Package Grub failed to install, you will not be able to boot your new operating system".

The rest of the install went fine, so I restarted my computer and tried to use another one of my CDs to boot Xubuntu. I got the error "/dev/sda does not contain a valid partition table", and later "ext4-fs: checksum failed on dev sda at sector...", and "please specify a valid partition for root=". I am absolutely positive that I entered the correct partition, I triple checked and entered other partition names to make sure.

I'd also like to add that the computer makes horrible crunching noises when it starts up and when I do stuff like press keys. So is something seriously wrong with my hardware, or is there another explanation for all of this? Because I really don't want to have to try to repair the computer and can't pay to have it repaired.

Ubuntu :: Grub Does Not Start During Boot?

Jan 24, 2011

A friend of mine installed ubuntu 10.10 alongside with Windows XP. During the installation he manually edited partitions. Now, the grub loader does not start, and in order to start ubuntu he has to use live cd to choose "boot from first hard drive" in the menu. Windows XP is missing from the boot options.

See the output of "fdisk -l" below (he has two identical hard drives). It looks like a big mess. Any idea where to start fixing this?

Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Does Not Start In Grub

Aug 3, 2010

I'm new to the world of dual booting Ubuntu. My computer is currently running windows 7 64-bit, and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 32-bit to run beside it. So I've created a boot disk, and I try to install Ubuntu. The weird thing is when I get to the frame that says "Prepare disk space" it correctly shows that I have windows 7 on the computer, but it shows it's on the wrong drive. In fact within the Ubuntu installer it doesn't even show the physical drive that windows is on, it only find the other two drives. If I load up System > Administration > Disk Utility then I can see all 3 physical hard drives and all the partitions on them, but not under the Ubuntu installer.

So I tried installing Ubuntu onto one of the other physical hard drives and that seemed to go just fine. The only problem is now when I boot, the only way I can swap operating systems is to go into my BIOS and change the boot order of my hard drives. If the hard drive with Windows is higher in the boot priority, it will boot windows, no problem. If the hard drive with Ubuntu on it is higher, then it takes me to grub, where it correctly shows windows 7 and ubuntu. Only problem is when I choose windows 7 all I get is a blinking cursor and nothing happens.

If I choose Ubunutu it boots correctly and everything works. So in a way I do kind of have them both working, but it'd be nice not to have to go into my BIOS just to change operating systems. I'm guessing that grub's problem is that the Ubuntu installer identifies the wrong drive that Windows is installed on, so when I pick Windows from grub it goes to the wrong drive. Can I fix grub manually? Or is there some compatibility issue between Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 32-bit that is causing this conflict?

Ubuntu :: Error On Start Up: Grub Rescue?

May 20, 2011

I recently plugged the hard drive from my parents' old computer into my computer's motherboard to copy some files (it's an IDE drive if that makes a difference). I copied all the old family photos and whatnot into a folder on my Vista 64bit desktop which runs off of my computer's main hard drive. I shut the computer down and unplugged the old IDE drive and tried to start it up again. After going through the typical start up screens it gets stuck on a black screen that says:"error: no such device: 66727dd9 (morenumbers).e3cbf9f71233grub rescue>_"the cursor is blinking where the underscore is. Typically, it would go to the screen where I choose whether I want to run ubuntu 10.10 or vista.I went into boot preferences and everything looks okay.. I tried plugging the hard drive into different ports on the mobo and still nothing. All my useful files are in the Vista partition of my hard drive so I'm fine with wiping everything and doing a fresh install of both vista and ubuntu so long as I can keep those files. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I've never heard of "grub rescue"

Ubuntu :: Installing From USB Into SATA SSD, But GRUB Never Start?

May 23, 2011

I'm trying to install Natty from a USB thumb drive on a SATA SSD. My main system is OS X. The method to create an instal USB disk on the download page didn't yield a bootable disk (the partition was readble, with the right files, but GRUB never started). The quick method from the clemsonlinux wiki gave me a minimal bootable drive, though. From there, I tried to install Natty on my SSD.

Once again, the partitioning process appears to work fine, the files are copied, no problem, but the GRUB install fails silently.I think that the problem comes from the fact that, when I boot from the USB drive (even if the SSD is set as the first boot device), the SSD ends up at /dev/sdb, whereas it would be at /dev/sda if the machine could be booted from the SSD.I chose the automatic partitioning method and ends up with sda1 (/), sda2 (ext) and sda5 (swap). If I launch the installer in recovery mode and ask to mount /dev/sdb1 as root, mount reports that sda1 is / (sda1 doesn't even exist), but blkid reports the SSD as /dev/sdb.

The output of the boot_inf_script is clearly pathological, but I didn't manage to get it out of the machine with what I have (gmail is broken in lynx).I've also tried to install LILO instead of GRUB. LILO boots, but doesn't find /dev/sdb (which is now /dev/sda) and gives me a busybox prompt.I've tried to install GRUB from there, but, once again, I get a black screen at boot time.
