Ubuntu :: Dump Serial Ports To Text Files With Timestamp?
Jun 1, 2010
I have a computer with 4 RS232 com-ports (MSI MS-9A19).
To each com-port, I have instruments attached that transmit data like this:
982000001088420<CR><LF>
982000001088421<CR><LF>

On my CentOS 5.2 install I've installed a dual-port serial card based on the NetMOS 9835 chipset. I've followed the serial instructions, but everything they tell me to do is already done - see setserial outputs below. I've compared these values to the lspci output (below, NetMos card is at the bottom of the output) for the card and it appears right. Problem being, I can't use the serial ports. Oh and I did use search, and looked at every 9835-related article before posting this :)

I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm attempting to use a microcontroller to send MIDI messages over a virtual serial port. I want to (eventually) read them with Mixxx. I'm using an FTDI chip, so I get a /dev/ttyUSB0. I've tried spikenzielabs' Serial-Midi program, but it doesn't see any serial ports. NOTEMIDI looks really old and won't compile on my 10.04 LTS machine.

I need to talk to several serial ports. I was thinking of having a bunch of USB to serial cables and then plugging all of them into a USB hub, which goes to the computer. What I want to know is, will I see each serial port as a separate thing? With 1 USB to serial cable and no hub, I see /dev/ttyUSB0. With this hub, will I see /dev/ttyUSB0, /dev/ttyUSB1, etc?

I am about to write a program to listen and read data from /dev/ttyS0 and write the data to /dev/ttyS1 after processing. Also, the same time I need to listen to /dev/ttyS1 and write to /dev/ttyS0 if any data arrived at /dev/ttyS1.

I am unable to access a serial port as normal user in OS 11.2. The ownership for the port,/dev/ttyS0 belongs to root:dialout. Group dialout has RW permissions.So,I guess the user has to belong to 'dialout' group.Even after a user is included in dialout port,still the user is unable to access,"Permission is Denied".
Before OS 11.2,I used to make the users members of group "uucp" to get serial port access.I tried that also in OS 11.2,without luck.So,I have to be root to access it. This requirement itself seems to be one of the fossils of old time Linux where for normal usage of PC resources,one needed elevated privileges.I guess the trend now is to let the user do all PC work,but in a safe way.

I got a directory with files in it like: 2006-07-01.foo2007-08-04.foo I need to update the timestamps on these files using "touch -t 200607010000 2006-07-01.foo" on each file in the directory so I came up with the following one liner:
for i in `ls -1`; do touch -t `ls -1 | sed -n 's%([0-9]{4})-([0-9]{2})-([0-9]{2})(.*)%1230000%p'` $i; done
My goal was to use sed and get the timestamp for touch and then loop through each file and touch with the timestamp.However the script, not giving me the results I intended. Can anyone chime in on what I am doing wrong?I have been banging away at this for a couple of hours now and am clueless on what it could be. I also tried another variant such as:
for z in $(ls -1 *.foo); do echo $z $(for i in `ls -1 *.foo | sed 's%([0-9]{4})-([0-9]{2})-([0-9]{2})(.*)%1230000%p'`; do echo "$i"; done); done

I am using makefile to complile all C Programming files. But certain files are not getting compiled and hence its object file is not getting generated. This is happening due to files haven't been modified for a long time. It seems that compiler knows that its object file is there hence no need to complie it actually it is not.

I have a directory listing with many subdirectories having many files. I want to recursively search for the oldest 5 files starting from the base directory and not 5 from each subdirectory. I am writing a shell script which sorts them using ls -lRtur|egrep "txt|jpg" > /tmp/file1 Now from this /tmp/file1 file I want to sort the files same as what the ls -ltr command does that is oldest file time to newest file time first. How do I sort based on Linux time stamp? The files itself also have Linux timestamps embedded in them So I can sort based after extracting them as well if it is easier.
My /tmp/file1 has entries like below.
-rw-rw-r--. 1 usr1 usr1 705 2010-01-22 17:25 sample20100603173659.jpg
I want to get the 5 oldest files and then delete them.

I have 2 text files : file1.txt and file2.txt
cat file1.txt
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces
cat file2.txt
2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
54 this is sentence3file2
I would like to join these 2 files. The result should look as follows :
cat joinedfile.txt
2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces
54 this is sentence3file2
==> so the joined file must be sorted on the first number. Any ideas how this can be achieved ?

I'm posting because I've read everything I can find on google and in the forum and the man page and still can't get it to work. I did read the FAQ, I hope I have adhered to it.I've tried several things and I don't remember exactly everything I tried and in what order.I've got several (12) HP ProLiant DL140 G3 servers running CentOS 5 that lockup about once a week. These are in a remote colo cage so I all i have access to is the built-in HP lights-out management interface, which includes a console, and ssh. I've been trying to get kdump setup to try to figure out what's going on. As an aside, if I run top on the console (via the management interface) the servers stay up for about a week, if I don't run top they crash within about 48 hours.I've used yum update to update to the latest available kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.x86_64) and installed the debuginfo and debuginfo-common RPMs from http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/x86_64/I have a single command in the /etc/kdump.conf file:ext3 /dev/sda5

I want to generate core dump files from my program when it crashes. Its a pretty big process and has about 10-11 threads in it.I have followed the documentation to enable core dump by setting ulimit to unlimited etc. I quickly tried "A demo program creating a core dump" from the following webpage, which succeeds in Segfault and dumping a core file in the directory that I configured.However, I tried running my original program and caused it to crash. I did this by making calls to kill(), raise() or the same null pointer access as shown in the webpage above. In each case, my program crashed but did not generate a core dump file. Am I missing something?My program is in C++ and my environment is Redhat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20)
Going through the "Why do I NOT get a core dump?" section on the same webpage as above, I can see two potential problems. One - there are issues with the suid/sgid (bullet # 6). I am not able to change any settings with suid because my system does not contain either /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable or /proc/sys/kernel/suid_dumpableTwo, my program has threads in it and the bullet # 8 is the problem.

may be an advanced question but I need to know how to do this. Here at work I am in charge of recruiting and we have about 1,000 resumes in already. All of the resumes are in a .pdf format. I need to rename every .pdf in the following format:{firstnameLastname}.pdfThe only way I know how to do this is to convert all the .pdf files to text, extract the name out of the first few lines of text, import into excel, and then use VBA to rename the files in mass:Here is my logic so far:~Deskop/a = houses all the .pdfresumesOpen terminal: Code: cd ~/Desktop/afor f in *.pdf; do pdftotext -raw $f; done That will convert all of the preceding resumes into text filesNow I would like to append the name of the text file into the last line of the text file. So, for example, for Resume1.txt, I want to append "Resume1.txt" to the last line within Resume1.txt. So after I run the command I open Resume1.txt and on the last line within I want to see "Resume1.txt" on the last line, at the end of the resume.How can I do this? I would like to use a loop and have the terminal append the filename to the body of the text file until all of the have been appended.

Here's a little tool that does this:
Without arguments, updates the SOA serial in a zonefile to the current date. If the date was already updated, just updates the revision number (incrementing up to 99, and then again 01). Uses RFC 1912* recommended format.
With $1 == <two digit number>, auto updates (if necessary) just the date part and uses your provided revision number.
With $1 == <eight digit number>, uses that as a date (no validation of any kind), and just auto update the revision number
With $1 == <full serial>, will just replace whatever the serial is with the provided serial, without any validation
* YYYYMMDDRR (4-digit year, 2-digit month, 2-digit day of month, 2-digit revision number)
This script + keeping SOA/NS/MX/CNAME RRs in a common file $included from other files with $ORIGIN and A/PTR/TXT RRs, made everything way easier to manage, enabling me to script some zone switchers, automatic failover/redirection of DNS on WAN changes, etc, etc. I think this stuff might be cool to integrate with something like this script and make nice CLI toolset for bind. Looking forward to implement it.
Code in pastebin
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# globals
script_name="${0##*/}"
script_dir=$(readlink -f "${0%/*}")
script_version=1 .....

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but
cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

I am hoping to be able to get an old serial-touchscreen to work with a usb/serial adapter. I had this touchscreen working some years ago on different hardware. I would like to hook it to the machine I am setting up as a multimedia host with mythtv among other things.
Following the instructions I left behind when I got this to work way back when does not work. See [URL] ....
This info is a work around to get the xserver to see the touchscreen. [URL] ....
I do know that the touchscreen works as I am able to get garbage on the screen as in the first part of my howto. But I have not had any success getting xorg to see it. I wish I had posted a copy of the xorg.conf at the time, but......
There is an issue with the current xserver in testing that I am hoping the next update (in unstable) will fix when it gets pushed to testing. That is that Code: Select all# X -configure fails with a segfault. So I am not able to generate the xorg.conf needed to get it to work. I was going to post a bugreport, that is when I found out there is an update in unstable, so I am waiting for it to get pushed at the moment.
Anyway I am hoping that I can link /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/tty0 and get it to work. I would like some kind of guess as to my chances of success before I go to all the work of getting the monitor hooked to the host.

I found this command that works great finding and replacing a simple string to another in files located in that folder and all sub-folders.
Code: find . -name '*.php' | xargs perl -pi -e 's/OldText/NewText/g'
The problem I have is that I need to replace a more complex string, like this: Old string: /mnt/stor6-wc2-dfw1/627896/982574/ New string: /mnt/stor8-wc2-dfw1/369587/302589/ There I don't know how to do it... since the / is what separates the old from the new strings, and the strings that I want to replace have / in it. Also, I would like to know how to specify under what folder replace the files, for example, I want that it search/replaces all files under /var/www/mysite/htdocs folder.
