Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Doesn't Find Manageable Screen?

Oct 13, 2010

I upgrade yesterday my lenny to squeeze.

Now I have some problem with compiz. When I do compiz --replace, I get:

compiz (core) - Fatal: Software rendering detected.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager

Is it a driver problem? My ATI video card is one of them that works only with open driver and they seems corrrectly installed. glxinfo | grep render, give me a positive result.

Ubuntu :: Error: No Screens Found

May 9, 2010

I'm trying to install 10.04, but have hit a few bumps. The first time I tried to boot the live cd, the monitor frequency would go out of range. I fixed this by deleting the

Code:
ro quiet splash
from the end of the boot line, and replacing it with
Code:
ro vga=773 nomodeset

After booting with this modification to the kernel line, rather than booting into the live cd desktop, it takes me to a command setting. To try and get things moving I type

Ubuntu Installation :: With NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card Drivers (310M) On A Dell Vostro 3300 - Errors "no Device Found - No Screens Found"

Oct 28, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.

The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:

1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

Ubuntu :: Gparted Error - No Screens Found

Oct 10, 2010

I downloaded the new gparted (6.4.1 I think) and when I try to run it from a live cd in the default settings it keeps telling me that it can't find my screens. I have an intel video card. I haven't had this problem with older versions of gparted. I suppose I could use an older version, but I'd like to know what the problem is.

Ubuntu :: No Screens Found When Trying To Start X Server / Get That?

Oct 14, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.10 x64, fully updated kernel and stuff, in VMWare Workstation 7.

Before I tried installing the Nvidia driver, I set up all my stuff, settings, etc. Restarted several times, everything went okay.

I then decided to install the Nvidia drivers for my GTS 250. I first tried the manual install (sudo sh NVIDIA-INSTALL-NAME.run) and it failed saying something about the nvidia.ko or nvidia.so. I tried using this page http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9203671 to fix it, but it still failed, so then I used the automatic method (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current) and it installed fine, then I ran nvidia-xconfig and restarted.

The VM started up, but no GUI came up, instead, a black screen with a terminal (I think it's called a Virtual Terminal) came up and asked me to log in. I tried the command "startx" from there, and it told me no screens were found.

What can I try?

Ubuntu :: Nvidia 'No Screens Found' After Every Reboot?

Nov 7, 2010

Some background to summarise, I have installed 10.10 clean over the top of 10.04. I did not have X/display problems on 10.04. After installing the Nvidia display driver for my device (Asus 8800GT - display driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.12.run) in order to get dual-headed display working under TwinView (as I had previously have used on 10.04 problem-free) I cannot reboot/shutdown my machine without a Fatal Error No Screens Found message appearing at boot time.I can hibernate, but this is less than ideal, especially after installing updates which require a restart. Every time this does happen I can re-run the driver installation and all is well again.Below are two copies of my Xorg log. The first is the erroneous log, the second the successful log. Below that is my xorg config file generated via nvidia-xconfig.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Fatal Error: No Screens Found?

Feb 15, 2011

I just installed Maverick on a brand new system last Saturday. Everything worked, except dual monitors, so I activated the proprietary ATI/AMD driver. That allowed the dual monitors to work, except that it put a little "AMD unsupported hardware" watermark in the lower right-hand side of each screen. After a day or two, I decided to go back to the default driver while trying to figure out how to avoid the watermark.

I assumed that when I deactivated/removed the proprietary driver that it would automatically switch back to the default. Instead, my computer now boots to TTY1, and when I try to install xserver.xorg, etc., I get a lot of error messages, ike "No screens found" or "Screens found, but configuration is unusable," etc. The same messages show up in the logs. Can anyone help me get back to a useable desktop display? At this point, I don't care which one. erhaps the proprietary would be easiest since it seems to be holding my system hostage, but either one would work.

The idea is to put the right extension on the vga monitor but don't why the monitor is know my main screen and my laptop the extension. I have tried to change sides but the laptop is still the extension and not the main one as I want.

Is there a hard way to make this work?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Startup And Shutdown Screens Do Not Display Properly

May 2, 2011

The startup and shutdown displays are a series of vertical black and white lines, and the text displayed on them appears as more or less white blobs. Otherwise, the displays when 11.04 is running are fine, but this startup looks so naff it would be nice to change it so that the diplays can be read. I would hate to demonstrate Ubuntu to someone and have to explain such a display.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Fatal Server Error No Screens Found 9.10

Jan 9, 2010

I've installed 9.10 on a work station with success. I've got an nvidia quadro fx 3000 and its supported under nvidia legacy driver apparently. So I've tried to install the driver with no success. Xorg.0.log reports a fatal server error no screens found. I get a flashing console login when I boot with "nvidia" device driver in xorg.conf, it boots fine with "nv". No matter what I try I cant get it to boot with nvidia drivers. Also, on a side note, after initially installing nvidia driver thru hardware in gnome, I no longer have a grub loader option to select recovery or anything else. Upon boot it displays "grub" briefly then continues to boot to gui. I've set the delay to 20 seconds with no results.

Resolved the issue of the display, now on to the grub menu.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Save Display Settings - 2 Screens?

Oct 6, 2010

I have seen posts on the fact that dual screen configuration seem to be a nightmare with opensuse 11.3. As a few already mentioned, it worked all fine with 11.2 and now we are back to. I have two screens attached to my laptop: the standard LVDS and one HDMI high res monitor. It works fine to configure it once but it is NEVER SAVED so I have to do this at EVERY boot. Even more annoying: when the slid is closed, my laptop goes into "no display mode" (black screens) and when it tries to come back to life (opening the lid again) everything is screwed (to use a nice word).

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Configure X-Server - Errors "device Not Found" And "no Screens Found"

Apr 15, 2011

I installed debian 4.0 (etch) on an old computer with some pickled graphics card in it, and then I upgraded the computer to one with slightly newer hardware only without the graphics card (the new one used on board graphics). I moved the hard drive from the old one to the new one but when I booted it up it failed to start the X-server and I got some errors listed for "device not found" and "no screens found".

I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" however I can't seem to find a working configuration. It seems pretty silly that when installing debian it can detect all this automatically with no problems but when it comes to changing some hardware around you are left in the dark with a complicated re-configuration process. Is there not some way to automate this? I'd rather not have to re-install everything

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 With KDE 3.5 - Screens Found But No Usable Configuration

Dec 27, 2009

I previously used 11.1 with KDE 3.5. Since I have /home on a separate partition I decided to install 11.2 from scratch to avoid any conflicts with KDE 4 installing. No problems on first reboot and some updates were installed. Now at each boot I'm dropped into text login. If I try <startx> I get <no screens found> and /var/log/Xorg.0.log gives <screens found but none have usable configuration>. Ubuntu :: Xorg Messed Up - Fatal Server Error (No Screens Found)

Apr 23, 2010

My issue began with my resolution changing to 800x600 in Karmic Koala and then my inability to change it back to anything else. In my haste to fix it before going to work this morning I loaded a new xorg.conf without backing up the old xorg.conf with data not relevant for my monitor and now I'm in limbo. The good news, I hope, is that I also run 8.04 on the same computer so I do have access to what I hope is proper xorg.conf / I've modified the existing xorg.conf file and I'm still getting the "low graphics mode" message (EE) problem parsing the config file and (EE) Error parsing the config file. Red Hat :: Fatal Server Error No Screens Found On RedHat 7.1 XFree86

Apr 4, 2009

there are several posts related to my problem but not quite what I want. I don't need any effects to be running nor do I need perfect resolution. I have a PCI-E card Nvidia 8600 gts and I need to run redhat 7.1 for reasons that are not debatable. I also have an onboard ati radeon X 1250 but currently I am running the PCI-E.The installation was successful and ran in GUI, however after installation and reboot, the screen keeps flickering trying to load the desktop.I just need to get the GUI running the same way the installer was able to run in GUI, I tried editing the XF86Config file to change the driver to either vesa or vga but still didn't work. Probing for devices is not an option since the card is not listed and the maximum video ram goes up to 64MB in xconfigurator. It probes my card as a VGA generic with 1 MB ram. I know there is a way to have the desktop load just the same as the installer's gui settings but that's where I need help.

this is after changing all the 'driver' values to vesa. I don't understand why it can't find the screen even though I used the horizontal and vert. sync values for my monitor. Any instructions or advice on how to just get the desktop loaded would be great, I know this is a very old OS but regardless I need for it to work.

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded To FC10 - Video - Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found Gotta Go, X Session Getting Corrupt

Jun 13, 2009

I must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:

First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.

Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Start Gui (no Screens Found) / Terminal "dual Screen"

Dec 7, 2010

I've experienced 3 1/2 years of Ubuntu bliss. I have run into the first issue that I cannot solve using these forums, and I'm at my wit's end. Problem: I cannot start gdm (gnome?). I get the "Fatal server error: no screens found" error. Also, my terminal screen is duplicated on the top and bottom of the laptop monitor, indicating something gone terribly wrong.

When the problem started: immediately after running standard update to 2.6.32-26 (this time). Last time, it happened after running a standard update, but that was weeks ago. I did a complete reinstall (three times, including once to 10.1)

My system:
Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (clean install + recent updates)
Kernel version 2.6.32-26
Also have 2.6.32-25. Neither one works in recovery mode, either.
Machine: Dell Inspiron 1420
