Ubuntu :: Cant Get Access To Telnet Console / 'connection Refused'

Mar 2, 2010

I have an application that uses a telnet console, and I have an autostart script to start it (and check that it is running). The problem is that if the program is not startet by root, or by using sudo, I cant get access to the telnet console, it just says "connection refused".The application works fine, but I cant acces its console, so I have to shut it down, and then restart it with sudo to be able to log in to it.Anyone know how to make the script start the application with enough rights?

Programming :: Telnet: Connect To Address 127.0.0.1: Connection Refused

Jul 21, 2010

I want to create script wherein it will check the application if its running. The command that I'll be using to check the application is telnet (if you can recommend others, that's ok). I've an application and it is listening to port 1808. If I do telnet localhost 1808, the response is :

Code:

[root@test ~]# telnet localhost 1808
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused

What I want to happen is if the response is like to code above, it will execute a commands. Obviously, above code knows that the application is not working so I need to execute a commands. I created a script before using expect but I don't think it will work because I haven't establish a shell yet unlike successful telnet I could spawn expect.

This last one is strange as I the IP looks odd.

What I am doing wrong, and how do I fix it. After much surfing many mosts say that telnet is not used anymore but I want to use it to test my smtp server.

Ubuntu :: Telnet: Unable To Connect To Remote Host: Connection Refused

Jul 16, 2010

when i try a telnet to a host like that: telnet 10.10.10.10 1234 i got this: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused.

1/ does this mean that the problem is not due to a firewall, but that the host 10.10.10.10 doesn't listen on the port 1234? other way does this mean that my firewall is authorizing traffic on the port 1234?

and when i try a telnet on another port like that: telnet 10.10.10.10 1235 i get: Trying 10.10.10.10 ...

in this case this

2/ does this mean that the firewall is blocking the traffic between my host and the 10.10.10.10 on the port 1235?

Fedora :: Get A "Connection Refused" Error When Trying To Telnet To Port 7500?

Sep 6, 2010

Ok, a bit of a backround. I am a recent Ubuntu user and made the switch to Fedora being utilized as a server. I am trying to move to a new MUD(text based D&D type game) codebaseI have gotten my code compiled and executed the startup script. The process shows in the ps ux list. As the game it set up it uses port 7500. As the script running I get a "Connection Refused" error when trying to telnet to port 7500. Upon using nmap, I show only my SSH port open (the only daemon I have installed currently) yet no port 7500 open.

I believe this to be an issue somewhere in Fedora as I've had no issue on Ubuntu with past MUD codebases.I have disabled the firewall within Fedora and still no luck. Please bare with me as I'm new to fedora's intricacies.Short Story for those that hate reading long winded posts: A port that should be open by acript known to work on other distro's doesn't seem to open the called port using Fedora

Programming :: Script - If Telnet Root Hostname Fails Then Try To Ssh In - Error "Unable To Connect To Remote Host: Connection Refused"

May 11, 2010

I'm trying to make an SSH script for my place of employment. This script, I want to go out to the server hostnames we have specified (in another file) and change a users account password. We use Kerberized telnet, so if telnet root hostname fails, I want it to use ssh username hostname and use the old password (specified). If both fail, I want it to ask the user what the port should be and input the port in the ssh command.

But I'm having a issue having it try telnet root hostname and if it fails then, try to ssh in, I have no clue how to have it proceed. Is it an if statement? Here's the telnet failed message: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

Ubuntu Networking :: "Connection Refused" - Script - Access All PCs In LAN Via Ssh From Server

May 10, 2011

I need to access all PCs in our LAN via ssh from our server in order to do some maintenance. All of them have Ubuntu or Kubuntu Lucid Lynx. Some of the PCs allow this access with no problems, but most of them not. They just answer "Connection refused". I realized that these PCs don't start sshd at startup. If I type "sudo service ssh start" manually in these PCs then sshd starts and all works. But I need it to be started automatically.

I tried some workarounds to solve with no success. I always tried to run a script at startup that could start ssh. If I write a script with this single command inside (service ssh start) and execute it as root, it doesn't work! It doesn't start ssh. But if I execute the same command directly in the command line, it works. I don't understand this behaviour. Also I don't understant why it doesn't happen to ALL the computers. Some of them start ssh at startup with no problems.

Programming :: Redirect Console To Telnet

Jun 4, 2010

My hardware is the FriendlyArm mini2440 Samsung board. I run our main application from init.d/rcS. It uses printf's to display continuous program debug information that can be seen on the serial ttySAC2 console. I would like to be able to remotely view this information by a telnet connection when needed. What is the best way to accomplish this? The telnet user can possibly activate some script or program. I saw there is a ttysnoop program that I could not get to compile.

There must be a simpler way. There must be several ways. Instead of using printf I could do something else. I do not want to use a normal log file to the flash file system. I had thought of using a ram file in /var directory but it would complicate matters as I would need to limit its size and the telnet user needs to view the program's printfs in a real time fashion.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PulseAudio Volume Control - Connection Failed:Connection Refused

Jul 4, 2010

I tried to finally set-up surround sound on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine and i was successful in doing so after a while of changing settings and tinkering. After doing so though, i was later in the day not able to get into the Pulseaudio Volume Control, therefore, everything is stuck where it is and i can't change anything. When i try to open Pulseaudio Volume Control i get the error message, Connection failed, Connection refused. My programs still play sound and i can control the sound of the programs through the programs, but i cant control the sound of the sorround sound now and my main sound bar only affects my stereo speakers, not the surround ones.

I believe this may have happened after the random disk check on restart, but i can't 100% confirm that and i'm not even sure if they are related. I still have sound, but i have no way to control the volume of my entire system at once. I did some looking around online and saw that others are having or had the same issue, and it was through different versions of Linux also. somehow reset everything so i can access PAVC and start over . I also tried steps listed in another thread here on the same topic, but they weren't working and it also seemed to be for older Ubuntu versions.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Bluetooth Connection Between Two Computers Throws Connection Refused (111)

Apr 3, 2011

I'm trying to create a PAN (Personal Area Network) using a laptop (Siragon ML-1040) and my desktop computer, but I get the Connection Refused (111) error.

Blueman doesn't detect any network service between the two computers unless I start PAND on one of them and then it detects the NAP service. That, only after I enable the NAP/Workgroup services on the Services submenu in Blueman. However, it doesn't work neither with the NM plugins or without them (dhclient and that other one I can't remember the name of).

Any clues over here? I'm using pand 4.91 and blueman.

Ubuntu :: SSH Error:Connection Refused?

I have trawled the forums regarding the setup of putty and openssh and everything appears to be correctly configured.I have checked that the services are running on the server and that the IP address for the server is correct. The guides I have read online suggest that ssh should be correctly configured as part of the install, so why can I not connect from the same LAN?Is the firewall enabled by default during install?

Ubuntu :: Recording Audio Over A Telnet Connection ?

Jun 9, 2010

I am using a PC to telnet into a Lucid Lynx Ubuntu system, and trying to record audio via a microphone which is connected to the Ubuntu system, and play it back on the PC. The microphone works when recording and playing directly on the Ubuntu system (so I know it's not hardware), but not when recording over the telnet connection. Playing other audio files does work over the telnet connection (so once again, I know it's not hardware), it's just the recording that doesn't work.

So basically it's just the audio-in over the telnet connection that Ubuntu isn't liking.

I tried removing PulseAudio (as I had a Fedora system that I had to do this with also, and that was the fix for that system), but apparently recording doesn't work at all in Ubuntu without it, as the microphone wouldn't work directly on the system anymore after in removed it. So I reinstalled it, but I am still stuck.

I cannot use any other programs to accomplish this - and I don't think I have to, I believe something is just messed up somewhere that is not allowing my microphone to pick up sound over the telnet connection, but I don't know what it is.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get A 'Connection Refused' Error

Apr 21, 2010

I need to browse the net more securely and bypass throttling by an infrastructure-dictator by creating a SSH Tunnel directly to my internet service provider and use it as proxy.

I tried both a dynamic and local tunnel, was a able to connect to the server and log-in just fine, but when I tried to surf I get a 'Connection refused' error.

Here's what I tried:

Code:
ssh -D 8022 user@tunnel.host -N
ssh -L 8022:tunnel.host:8080 user@tunnel.host -N
(not at the same time of course)

Then I set 127.0.0.1:8022 as proxy in browser settings. As long as the tunnel is open the browser displays a blank page with no error when I try to open a remote web page, while the terminal gives me a 'Connection refused' error.

I'm using OpenSSH_4.7p1 Debian-8ubuntu1.2, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007 on Xubuntu Hardy.

In case anybody is wondering this is perfectly legitimate. The tunnel.host I connect to is a server set-up by my ISP specifically for this purpose.

Either of the examples above should work as others who have the same ISP reported that it works. Therefore, I suspect this is an issue with my own security settings which are slightly on the paranoid side but I can't figure out what. Stopping ufw and explicitly opening port 8022 didn't help.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connection Refused Through Wifi?

Jul 23, 2010

I cant connect with ssh to my workstation using my notebooks wireless lan. with cable I'm able to connect.so the funny thing is, if I first establish a connection from my workstation to my notebook (like ssh it or just ping the notebook) I'm able to create a ssh connection from my laptop to the workstation using wireless lan.scanning my workstation from the wireless lan of my notebook with

Code:
nmap -sT -p 22 ventury
says port 22 is closed

scanning it from the notebook with cable lan,it says port 22 is opened

scanning it from the wireless lan of my notebook an have sent a ping from the workstation before says port 22 is opened.ution.

I got a 64bit version of Kubuntu 10.04, up to date, installed on both, my workstation(ventury) and my notebook (defiant).the question is: Do I always have to ping my notebook first if I want to ssh from it to my workstation or is there some other solution? And why does it work fine with cable, but not with WiFi?

Ubuntu Networking :: Port 22:connection Refused With SSH

Dec 21, 2010

having a port 22:connection refused problem with SSH. None of what I have read has been what I have been experiencing, so I figured I would post here. The worst that could happen is this gets completely ignored, or I am told that there is already a solution, that I missed it, and directed to it. Here is my problem:

Just learned how to ssh into my machine a few days ago. Everything has been running smoothly until I ran into a little problem: all of a sudden I can't connect anymore. I have sshd-server installed and updated. I have sshd turned on

Code:
/sbin/service sshd start
And I even ran:

Code:
/etc/init.d/sshd start
Because I was told that it would start ssh from boot. Nothing has changed from today and yesterday and I haven't been having problems with port 22 being blocked.

I have also tried to ssh into the machine by the machine itself:

Code:
ssh <IP of machine>
with the same error.

I imagine herein lies the problem. But why won't it stay running?I am not running any firewall on galla (iptables -L told me that).P.S. I can sucessfully ssh out of galla to cachin. And, even if I just try to ssh localhost on galla, same thing happens.

Ubuntu Servers :: VsFTPd - Connection Refused

May 29, 2011

Connecting remotely through FileZilla works ok, but I can't connect from localhost (FWIW I'm running WordPress and would like to be able to upload plugins from the dashboard).

I've got vsFPTPd installed and - I think - running:

Code:

# service vsftpd start
vsftpd start/running, process 25782

All ok so far... however I can't see it on any of my ports:

Code:

# nmap localhost
Not shown: 995 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcp open ssh

[code]....

And of course if I

Code:

telnet localhost:21
That's 'Connection refused...'
Nothing in 'netstat --listen' either.

The odd thing is, I can connect fine using FileZilla.

To confirm, I have

Code:

local_enable=YES
set in my vsftpd.conf.
