I'm blue in the face using chmod and chgrp. Both root and my own username are members of the cdrom group under the administration menus.The dialogue above displays, and then the disk icon appears afterwards, but it's very slow. Anyone have a clue about this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Ubuntu v10.04 with a wireless card.My desktop is a Dell Optiflex running WinXP.The desktop is connected via ethernet cable to a Linksys wireless router. Certain folders on the desktop are set for sharing. Up until early last week I was able to access the desktop folders from the laptop with no issues.Suddenly I am now getting this error "Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share" whenever I try to access the desktop folders from the laptop.I suspect an upgrade is the culprit, but not sure.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've set up a RAID6 array with a normal hard disk (/dev/sda) for boot. However whilst rebooting the computer I noticed that ubuntu is booting into a splash screen asking me: Can't mount /dev/md0 (which is my RAID6 array) Press s to skip, c to continue, something along those lines. The reason for this is that one of the drives from the RAID6 array was showing Uncorrectable read errors towards the end of the disk.I was unaware of. I'm in the process of replacing this.
As this server is completely headless (all I have remotely is SSH), I had to plug in a monitor and keyboard to find out that all I had to do was press S to get it to boot. Wasted around an hour for that!
So my question is, how do I get Ubuntu to stop automatically trying to mount /dev/md0 before it boots? Booting so that I can get SSH access is more important than getting the raid drive. Here is my /etc/fstab file (note I've put a # in front of /dev/md0, sdg1 and sdh1 are external ESATA drives, UUID is the swap):

I have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. When I try to mount the drive I get this error message: "Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/data" What have I done wrong and how can I make it mount again? I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

View 14 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to connect to the three other machines in my house but am having quite a hard time doing so. i've never had a problem in the past with ubuntu, but, with 9.1 and windows 7, things have gotten a bit harder. i'm running 9.1 and my roommates are running windows 7. i've installed, set up and configured samba and i can see the computers on my network, but any time i try to access either of the drives, it says unable to mount location: failed to mount windows share.

and if I check messages in the Log File Viewer I see the following text repeated (save for the last line) a couple of dozen times.

An error occurred: Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file. As far as I can tell I have the relevant CSS libraries installed I'm lost without being able to play CD's and DVD's on my system.
I switch on the PC and it loads the Grub splash screen. However, it does not automatically boot the top entry after two seconds as it's supposed to and just hangs. I hit enter to boot it and it attempts to but after a few seconds gives me the error "unable to mount file system....a maintenance shell will be started"
This occurred after I was using it and then everything suddenly froze up on me and I had to crash out Now this!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from Ooo 2.4 to Ooo 3.3, running it on Hardy. Everything seems to work fine, except for the dialogue window to open / save files.
In the previous version of Ooo I worked with, files were opened and saved by Nautilus. Now Ooo uses a different file manager which I don't like, because I can't jump quickly to my favourite maps and it's harder to navigate through my files. It has to be easy to have Nautilus again opening files, but I just can't find out how.
I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.

I'm currently using Lucid, but this happened on Karmic as well. The way I see it, the result I would like would be either:
1. The "safely remove drive" command just unmounts the drive (I can't imagine what else it does anyways, besides give me this stupid error)
2. There is no "safely remove drive" option.
I have a problem in my ubuntu 10.01 that it can't load a drive/volume in ubuntu. When I tried, it said: "Unable to mount location Error mounting: mount: /dev/sda1: can't read superblock". And when I boot my pc with 'Windows', it said : "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" under a blue screen. What can I do to solve this problem?

This came up suddenly during a fast mouse click session. As root its OK. I would have liked to add a small image about this but i do not have any web site for this any more.

Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. View 2 Replies View RelatedI've set up Samba under Ubuntu for windows SMB file sharing (currently unauthenticated but soon to be backed off against A.D.) This is great within Windows where l folders are available as mounted in all applications but from my Ubuntu desktop and Ubuntu laptops, we can only access network folders and files from the File browsers and bookmarks one finds in the "Places" menu. Our issue is that most (but not all) dialogue boxes don't have any options for viewing non-local files and folders. i.e. when I'm in my web browser and I go to upload a file from our local network file server to an internet location, the "Open" dialogue box cannot see any of our local network locations.

I have been trying to convince people to use Ubuntu instead of windows, but this seems to be a deal breaker for most of them. When uploading pictures to the web or facebook it is very difficult to navigate pictues in the file browser window with the little bitty thumbnails beside the file name. If there is no way to do this how would I recommend this idea for Ubuntu and to whom would I submit it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhile in a web browser I'm trying to attach a file which resides on a network location. The file dialogue doesn't allow me to browse any network location. I've mounted the volume and added locations to favorites. I've also tried entering an smb:// path. This only happens in browsers, both FFnd Chrome, some examples would be attaching a file in gmail, yousendit, etc. I can browse and work off the network normally in desktop apps.
I'm very new to *nix.
