Ubuntu :: Black Screen On Startup Then Frozen After Working For Sometime

Dec 10, 2009

Not beeing an expert on Ubuntu, but loving it running on my old Dell Dimension 2400 Series, I do have some issues after the upgrade to 9.10.

1) Frozen screen after a while working with the system. Cursor moves, but frozen
2) Black screen at startup.

Retyping this message again on my Mac Laptop as Ubuntu froze again. I took the following action: Followed directions as listed here [URL]

1. Select recovery mode from the boot menu.
2. Select login as root from the menu in recovery mode.
3. Type this at the prompt
# sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
4. Exit
# exit
5. Now select Resume normal boot from the menu.

Every thing should be OK by now. This seemed to work, but after another reboot, black screen again. System Specs: [URL]. Running with 1 GB of Memory and 320Gb Hard Disk /w 2Gb Swap and 318 Gb Extended.

Ubuntu :: Black, Frozen Screen After Booting Up?

Mar 15, 2010

If I choose to boot Ubuntu, the splash screen appears, but right when the login screen should appear, I get nothing. This is how it started: While update manager was installing updates, I hit ALT+F2 to get to the TTY. I did this because ubuntu now refuses to mount any usb devices whatsoever. (for more on that, see this link: [URL] Once I got to TTY3 or whatever, I hit ALT + F7 to get back to the GUI. All I got was a black screen and a mouse. The computer froze and I restarted. All I have now after booting is a black, frozen screen. ALT + any F key to get to TTY doesn't work.

Fedora :: Screen Goes Black - Mouse Frozen - Caps-lock Blinking

Dec 14, 2009

I keep starting up Fedora and I'm not able to get far (although it's not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it's frozen, and thhen the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can't do anything or get it to recover. Sometimes it happens after 30 seconds, sometimes 40+ seconds and sometimes within 15 or so seconds.

How do I stop this and diagnose this?

I've tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, butt the same thing occurs!

I have:
Fedora 11
Kernel: i586
Asus EEE PC 1002HA

One other thing, it does always seem to happen after I've turned on wireless. And I've been using F11 for months now with no issue.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen On Startup / Resolve This?

Nov 30, 2010

Recently my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 has had an abrupt power shutoff (actually several times -- my battery has some problems).

Now when Ubuntu boots, I get the startup screen, but after a few seconds, the screen goes black. I can still boot from the live CD and in fact I am using my computer from the CD to write this post.

A few more details: When I press the power button while my computer is in this "blank" state, I get hard drive activity. Also, if I press "power", and then "enter", the machine actually shuts down.power

Slackware :: Screen Goes Black On Startup?

Jul 19, 2011

HP laptop with Intel graphicsunning Slackware current with a kernel.Booting with the "nomodeset" kernel parm works but X gets stuck with a 1024x768 resolution. When booting without, the screen goes black after a few pages scroll by, just at the point where the console switches to a higher resolution. Changing to a different console didn't help, so I blindly log on and type startx, and the screen comes back to life with KDE running at the higher 1366x768 resolution, I try a few apps, the webcam, suspend to RAM, resume, and everything is now working flawlessly so it doesn't look like an X issue. At this point I can change to another console (or exit KDE altogether) and the screen is back on at the higher resolution. Looking at the X log and some dmesg output makes it seem that starting X possibly replaces, reloads or unloads a driver? If this is the case, how can I prevent the conflicting driver from loading in the first place?Quote:

dmesg |grep drm

Ubuntu :: Infinite Startup Loop - OEM / Black Screen

Apr 18, 2011

I'm doing a dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 on my Asus UL80v. When I restart and keep going into Ubuntu I'm fine, but I think if I go to Windows and then restart, the infinite start up happens, and I'm currently stuck in this. It'll go to the OEM screen, then a black screen with a cursor, then it goes black, and then back to the OEM screen and so on and so forth.

Luckily I have Ubuntu 10 on my flash drive, so I'm booting to that while I try to figure out this. Which reminds me, when I use the flash drive, there's an option to boot to local disk which also does not work, if that's worth anything. Before this happened, I ran check disk on windows because I ran into some partition troubles. There seemed to be no problems, and I can still access the drives from this flash Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Servers :: Black Screen On Startup Most Of The Time?

Aug 4, 2011

I'm having a problem with a server I just got. The first thing I did when I got it was to format the drive and install ubuntu server, but on booting up I got a black screen and my monitor (samsung syncmaster914v) displayed a bouncing notification with the text "not optimum mode recommended mode: 1280 x 1024 60hz". However at one by using a combination of plugging in the monitor after booting, and pressing random keys on the keyboard I was albe to boot into the server, and was able to access the monitor meu, which told me it was running at 640x480, and 60 hertz. having access to the console I stupidly tried changing the resolution and then rebooted, getting the same black screen.

Ubuntu :: Just Changed Graphics Resolution In STARTUP MANAGER - Black Screen

Jan 18, 2010

I just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?

the weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptop im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.

How can I clean this up? Also I have tried to start with the grub 1.99 on the 11.4 system and all I get is a black screen at startup. I am happy with grub on 10.4 except for the extra lines.

Debian Installation :: Black Screen Right After Startup Post Install

Feb 23, 2016

I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on a MSI CX620. Installation went fine but trying to boot it up the first time nothing but a black screen shows up. I've tried:

Holding shift on startup - Nothing

Press down all keys - Not much, only ctrl+alt+delete makes the screen turn off and then on again.

I'm thinking that I had secure boot on which I now after installation see could be a problem, but I didn't think it would be a problem as I could just go into bios and turn it off, but seeing now that I can't even go into bios it may be a problem.

Question: when I am booting up and getting all those "OK" green remarks, how do I cancel a daemon that freezes instead of giving me an ok or failed? I have tried <Ctrl><C> with no joy. I have tried dropping to interactive mode ("I") and bypassing the bad daemon, but interactive mode freezes when I go to start GDM, so no joy there either.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Login Screen Frozen

Nov 3, 2010

A few days ago I tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition on my laptop, since it doesn't have such a large screen. I installed it, restarted, and got presented with the login screen. I typed my username and password, waited for a while, sice it seemed to have frozen, and got presented with an error message saying something about "unity drivers" (the window didn't have a windows border, so metacity didn't seem to have loaded yet), and sorry, but I don't remeber the exact message anymore. I clicked the OK button, the system froze for a while again, and I got presented with the login screen again... This repeated itself 3 times, and then I came on the idea to set the session to Ubuntu Desktop Edition. It was slow, but it loaded, but it seemed to have loaded only half of the environment...

Today I decided to just try again, but with the Desktop Edition this time. I booted the CD into a live session, but all I got was a wallpaper with 2 icons jumping up and down. After waiting for quite a long time I got 2 error messages saying Metacity and Gnome-Panel had crashed. When I switched to command line mode (CTRL+ALT+F1), i got a command line interface wich was adding 2 new error messages every second...

Ubuntu :: Bootup Usually To Frozen Screen

Dec 30, 2010

Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a couple of Dell Inspiron 2650 laptops (both 512M memory) and when they run, they're great, but they only successfully boot up maybe 10% of the attempts. Most of the time, the touchpad and keyboard are inoperative, but I recall sometimes the enter key gets me past my user Id to input password. Trying to enter recovery mode isn't any better, but once into recovery, I'll boot up in safe graphics, but it is probably only running because it succeeded in entering recovery, anyways. I have elected to to boot up in safe graphics, but they still both freeze. No error messages, just a frozen background/icons screen.

Ubuntu has searched the hardware and reports there's nothing requiring proprietary drivers installed.

After reading all the other problems posted, I figure my laptops are doing pretty darn good, but it sure would be nice not to set around starting up and shutting down, over and over.
