Ubuntu :: After Formated Windows Partition Using GParted - Unallocated And Moved Under Extended Partitions

After I formated my windows partition using GParted it became Unallocated and moved under Extended partitions. I can't create the unallocated partition as primary one, or drag it out of the extended ones. I tried GParted live CD also, but nothing worked.
I have the following disk partitions from the left side of partition table as of now: NTFS - Primary windows vista Extended - 3 Nos. all NTFS - middle one contains data Unallocated space NTFS - Primary NTFS - Primary HP Recovery
My intention is to add unallocated space to the extended partition. Will I be able to use Gparted to do it?
Or can I install Ubuntu in one of the extended partitions and make this unallocated partition the home partition for Ubuntu. I am not able to add new partition in this unallocated space as disk manager in vista throws up an error no free disk space to complete the operation. I read in some forum that OEM installations allow only 3 primary partitions and one extended or 4 primary ones. Is it true for OEM's only or its a universal rule?
I wanted to create NTFS partition from unallocated space but by my mistake that space is beyond extended partition. How can I add unallocated space to extended partition and then create NTFS partition without deleteing any partitions?
My setup is as shown in the image below,i have 170G of unallocated space which id like to add to my Extended partition so that i can create logical partitions.I can only create one primary partition now of 170G which i don't need.Can i boot my machine off a live-cd and a run a gparted and add the unallocated space to the extended partition?
I was reading another thread about someone with a bad partition table and I decided to join this forum. I'm not going to take any drastic actions with the partition (/dev/sda3) in question. I am going to wait for instructions on what to do first. I am not very good with Linux and need some hand holding. System: DELL 4550 Dual-Booted with XP and Ubuntu. Works OK, just no swap. Well, here's what I did: I deleted a partition for Windows XP Pro because it was a trial, and it ran out. I then decided to slide the swap partition for the Ubuntu Linux that I dual-boot into over. (If this was successful, I was going to try expanding the root partition to take up the unused space.) I used Gparted on a CD to do this, as I figured it was safe to do.
I now cannot mount the swap space at bootup (and have to go into a backup version of the OS), although I can use Gparted in Linux to execute the "swapon" command, and it appears that it worked because I now see "swapoff" as an option on the context menu. (I actually don't even need a swap partition, except to hibernate.) If I highlight the swap partition and click on "Drive" on Gparted's menu bar and select "Create Partition Table", it will erase all data on /dev/sda, so how do I fix the bad partition table non-destructively?
I tried to repartition my hard (320GB) drive yesterday because I need (40 GB) more space in windows, below I mention the previous file system and later file system architecture. It is dual boot (windows 7 and Fedora 13). I am sorry that I did not take screenshot!
1. boot partition, 100 MB 2. windows-7, around 75 GB 3. extended, around 230 GB
inside extended 3 logical partitions:
3a. 125 GB for backupv(NTFS) 3b. 4 GB for linux swap 3c. 100 GB for linux
I used gparted. Since I had to create more space in between windows and logical partition for increasing windows, (I could not shrink Linux as it comes to the end) so I removed Linux (I reinstalled later) first, moved (hold in the middle and drag) backup partition to the right by 40 GB, created a primary partition out of the left portion of logical partition and merged with windows. Finally installed Fedora on the right most portion (60 GB now) in the logical partition. Now my file system looks like following;
Now my problem is, I don't like that 7.84 MB unallocated space in the logical partition. I was told that it (smaller than the smallest chunk gparted can allocate to any partition) will always be there unless we allow some program to do the partitioning automatically rather than I manipulate/move it manually? It is true? If so is there (m)any software which can do this? Or simply how to get rid of this unallocated space.
I am trying to partition my unallocated part of the disc in my laptop in ubuntu 10.04 using Gparted.Here is a screenshot of my disk and its partitions:
when i select the unallocated space i can ONLY create a PRIMARY partition..the LOGICAL and EXTENDED ones are grayed out.. i want to partition this unallocated space in two or three parts, and it seems i only have one (out of the four) primary partitions left.. so i cannot create the partitions i want!
I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.
I've installed Windows 7 + XP + Ubuntu 10.10 and Mac Os X on my PC. The problem is that XP wont boot. I've tried a lot of fixes for the last 2 days but still nothing. So I've come to conclusion that it might be probably due to its partition (dev/sda being inside of another Extended partition (dev/sda3) as you guys can see on the attachment. If so, how can I move it out of the extended partition.
I'd be very grateful if some charitable person could help with a problem. I have a portion of unallocated space, 15GB, which is situated to the left of all my other partitions (according to GParted). Unfortunately I already have 4 primary partitions. Although I am willing to delete my last partition, I still amn't sure how I could go about reclaiming the 2 portions of unallocated space under one new partition
my home partition is an extended one, and when i want to create an unallocated space the space will stay in that extended partition. but there is also an 7 gb unallocated space which i want to merge with the other unallocated space. I also cannot extend that partition over that 7 gb. how can i overcome that problem?

I'd like to create a swap partition having already reached the four partitions per disk limit. So I'd like to create an extended partition and move some partitions into it. The question is which partitions to move and where to create the extended partition.
Some partitions have so much data that I cannot back them up, so I'd prefer to avoid performing operations that might risk them.
By the way, is there a command line tool that provides equivalent output as gparted?
I would like to combine my Linux partition (/sda3) and /sad1 to give me more disc space. I would also like to combine the two unallocated partitions to install a Windows 7 dual-boot with Ubuntu. How would I do that without totally raping my current Ubuntu install?
Recently I decided to give Ubuntu 10.04 a try and I didn't like it + some drivers were really buggy so I deleted the partition. I can't boot. I covered the process of how I fixed it on my blog here. Anyhow, now I'd like to expand my windows partition as there's 175gb of unallocated space. The problem is gparted won't let me expand it (trying this via liveCD). I've tried mounting/unmounting it's no luck.
[URL] I used testdisk as the replies suggested recovered all my linux partition including my 2 linux distros and boot partitions, but now my windows 7 appeared as unallocated space, which is very ironic, I fixed my last problem only to have situation reversed. I recovered the mbr record from my boot partition, but because that record dose not include the ntfs partition, that partition appears as unallocated space. so how can I make that ntfs partition recognized again so I can update grub and boot to my windows 7 partition? Please help me out, I have had this partition stuck in my computer for a while doing nothing...
I need to create a NTFS partition. However Windows installer doesn't see 'unallocated' under /dev/sda4. I do not want to touch /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda5. I also need swap. Is there any chance I can move 'unallocated' under /dev/sda4 from extended and recreate it as a primary partition?
I have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.
I used to run Windows and Ubuntu side by side. I have removed Windows and only run Linux now. However, when I try to release the partitions for use with Linux, Gparted just doesn't give me the correct resize options. Have attached a file, so you can see my problem. I believe its because the /dev/sda4 drive is sandwiched between the two unallocated partitions, and I just have no option of resizing into those empty ones. I have tried formatting them, but it just won't play. Ignore the fact they have locked keys, I have been using the Live CD to boot, but this screenshot was taken from my normal login.
I have accidentally deleted the first booting parition (Windows 7) with GParted, so then I immediately googled and found an utility testdisk which has successfully recovered the parition and it can boot and be seen from linux again. Only Exception is GParded, which sees an unallocated space on whole disk from this point!
I found this post [URL].. which looks like solution, but I can't figure he count a number of sectors 978726293. 500107862016 / 978726293 = 510.978263885 what is near to 512 (sector size), but not equal. So I don't understand the arithmetic.
I have 500 MB of unallocated space on my hard drive. I would like to create a new partition with ext 3. Unfortunately, gparted gives an error so I am wondering if there is a way to do this without using gparted.
Vista Recovery Windows 7 GRUB Extended -->Fedora 12 (ext4)
so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
I bought a PC with Window Vista on it as my partner needs it. Using gparted I set up Primary partitions for Vista OS (sda1) and Ubuntu OS (sda2), plus an extended partition for Vista files, Ubuntu /home and swap:

My problem is Vista (as always). The 30GB I allocated is not enough, even just for the OS and it won't now boot from GRUB, though I can see it from GRUB. I don't want to do anything that risks a problem for Ubuntu. Will grub still see both OS if I wipe sda1 (Vista OS) and reinstall Vista OS on the extended partition sda6? Ideally I would like to merge sda1 with sda6 and install Vista on that, but that looks way too risky / impossible.
Edit - There is another drive on the PC which is much larger and I use for backup. Is there any scope for installing Vista on that one so that GRUB still identifies both. Not ideal as I like having one as the backup for the other.
I have a 6TB external eSata bay (Lacie BigQuadra). I made a GPT table with only one big ext4 partition. All was ok. I resized the ext4 partition and I created a 1TB NTFS partition. I can use it on Kubuntu but Windows 7 tell me the partition is not formated. When I go back to Kubuntu, parted tell me that the secondary GPT table is not at the end of the disk and tell me it's probably an other OS that thinks the disk is smaller that its real size. It seems Windows 7 thinks the disk size is 2 TB (and modify automaticaly the GPT table and create a secondary GPT table on the middle of the disk).
What can I do to make my NTFS partition visible in Windows 7? What can I do to prevent Windows 7 to move the secondary partition table on the middle of the disk and to modify the primary GPT table ?
I have installed Windows 7 Professional (64 bit version), and OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bit) on to a newly built Core i5 machine. I installed Windows first, with 3 partitions. The 100MB partition Windows reserves, a C: drive for the operating system and a D: drive for data. Both of these are NTFS partitions. I then installed OpenSuse into the unallocated section at the end of the new disk drive. The Linux partitioner showed OpenSuse in an extended partition, containing a swap / /home and /tmp partition. Both operating systems now appear to be working fine, but I'm worried about the Windows Disk Manager showing that the OpenSuse partions are primary ones, and are not inside an extended partition. It only shows a small amount of unallocated space at the end of the drive as being in an extended partition.
Should I delete OpenSuse and start again? Perhaps creating an extended partition with Windows before trying to reinstall OpenSuse?If I leave the disk as it is, is it likely to continue to dual boot without something unstable occuring? It may just be a Windows problem which will not be fatal, but I'm worried all my files may get scrambled at a some point in the future.
I installed a dual boot windows 7 and xubuntu and now decided that I would like to allocate more hard disk space to xubuntu. I've resized the windows partition (sda2 in the screenshot) and it is now the grey unallocated. I'm having trouble moving this unallocated space to the linux portion (sda5). I did my homework and found that this is done by booting off a live cd and using gparted from there, because you can't modify a partition that you're using. I also read that you had to turn swap off. I did both of these tasks, but as you can see from the attached screenshot, I am unable to resize the linux partition to fill the unallocated space.
Here's my "sudo fdisk -l" for reference:

Also, the sda4 is a shared partition that I can access from both windows and linux.
Although I've seen several threads with the same problem, I have not managed to solve the problem. GParted identifies my /dev/sda as unallocated disk space! The machine a Dell Inspiron M101Z laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit + W7 64 bit. I wouldn't have discovered the problem until I decided to replace my 32 bit Ubuntu with the 64 bit version, then GParted from the live cd identified my drive as Unallocated space!
I've already tried to use testdisk to write the partition table, but though it writes the table successfully and then it prompts to reboot, GParted still sees it as Unallocated. I've also tried fdisk /dev/sda then p then w to write the partition table, but again GParted screws up for some reason and sees it as Unallocated.
I successfully partitioned my desktop with Gparted and made it into an XP/Ubuntu dual boot.
Now i'm trying to do the same with my netbook (eee pc 1000he), and the existing partitions look funny:
How should I change this to prepare for installing Ubuntu? Can I just install to the unallocated space on the extended partition? I don't need optimal efficiency here, I just need to know where to install Ubuntu for a workable dual boot.
It's confusing to me that Windows is on an extended partition, and also that /dev/sda2 has the boot flag (this drive contains nothing but two undeletable folders titled "amd 64" and "i386"). This set-up is the result of a Windows re-install at a sketchy computer shop.
I was resizing my windows partition and accidently turned my computer off. When I went to run a disk check from gparted I get multiple filesystem errors. Chkdsk /r when run from a recovery cd says it can't determine the size of the partition so it can't continue. Is there anyway to get my files off the corrupted partition from within linux. Right now Gparted shows that it has been resized but that it is corrupted and i can't even attempt to mount it. There are only a few files I need to get off the partition but they are really important.
