Software :: Read Process/thread Schedule Information?
Nov 18, 2009
is there any tool can show the thread/process schedule information? i would like to know when the thread/process wakeup, and when it was suspend? it includes kernel and user space. With this information, i can know the thread/process task schedule, and calculate the MIPs.Another, do you know whether LTT support User space thread trace?

Is it possible to schedule a process in the foreground? Lets say a cron schedule to be ran at 9:00. I would like to come back at 9:30, see how the process is running, and being able to interact with it... lets say kill it, or whatever. Is it possible? (Its not necessary to use cron, but it must be in Command Line)

In short our required is that we are creating a share library which can be loaded by a process and that share library analysis the process which load it. Since share library is in address space of the process so I need to find out how many threads created by the process and what is status of their stack trace etc.
So I am looking for a way to get list of threads in running process.

I want to know, is there any way to prevent the multi-thread process from crashing if some errors (say, segmentation faults) occur in one of its child threads? I've found pthread_sigmask() function, but that does not seem to work:
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <unistd.h>
[code]...

I'm trying to create a separate thread for my program which basically polls using the read command. However this new thread seems to block the main thread, anyone know why this could happen.
In main I call this function pthread_create(&mainEventThread, NULL, GenericEventThread, NULL);
which calls
/*New threads start function */
void *GenericEventThread()
{
short int i, nError = -1;
[Code]...
I've used pthread_self to check that a new thread is being created, so why is the while loop in one thread blocking the main thread from running, I haven't used the join function anywhere in my code.

I'm trying to find how to schedule a process to start at a specific time (not on start up). How would I schedule a process/application to start at a specific time (if it matters, it will be a background process). For instance, have process abc start every weekday at 5am. I've done this for windows many times though have only been using linux regularly for a few months and haven't figured out the best way of doing this.
So far the best solution I have is to create a program that will start on boot and have it check the time and sleep until the required time and then start the required process(es) at the required time(s). But this seems more of a hack since I'd expect there to be a proper way of doing this.

Is there a way to find out information about a process based on the command used to run it?
Ideally I would like to get processes ID %CPU and memory usage back. I have written a short shell script which does this but I wonderd was there a command that did this.
Here's my shell script
Code:
#!/bin/bash
ExpectedArgs=1
ARGS=$#
if [ $ARGS != $ExpectedArgs ]
[Code]....

I am going to use "pthread_setaffinity_np" to bind a thread to a specific core. My application has two threads. I have used mutex to assign a specific id to each thread and then bind that thread to a core different from another core. but it seems that the os assigns both thread to one core.What should I do to bind each thread to a specific core?

I am troubleshooting something and I got this problem.
If I do "pstree -p"
It shows,
Code:
[code]....
However, it does NOT show up in "ps -elf"
Code:
ps -elf | grep soffi
0 S whho 7734 1 0 80 0 - 36435 - 11:14 pts/2 00:00:03 /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin -splash-pipe=5
0 S whho 7833 7759 0 80 0 - 751 - 11:21 pts/3 00:00:00 grep soffi
I was wondering if 7735, 7736, 7737, 7743 were really processes. Then I checked /proc, I could cd to /proc/7735, /proc/7736, etc, but I could not ls them out. I looked at the man page of "pstree", it says,
Code:
Child threads of a process are found under the parent process and are shown with the process name in curly braces, e.g.
icecast2---13*[{icecast2}]
So, what does all this mean? Does it mean that 7735, 7736, 7737, 7743 are just threads but not processes? If so, why could I cd to /proc/<id> but not see them in "ps -elf".

building an install cd or dvd media that will automatically install the Linux software on a client pc. There is no network connectivity so the client can only be loaded with Linux from CD or DVD media. The crux of the matter is that I can not automatically install the Linux software on client WITHOUT typing linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg at the boot prompt.
I want to avoid any user prompts and just have the software install with the RPMS that I need for this client pc at the boot prompt. Actually, when the boot prompt commences, I would like the software install to start with no user intervention. I've tried several different methods in isolinux.cfg, but the OS always wants boot prompt for the cdrom. Can the boot prompt information be read automatically from the isolinux.cfg with out user intervention? I'm looking for the same behavior as a LIVE CD that kicks off with no boot prompts after a few seconds. Here's a copy of my isolinux.cfg
default linux
prompt 1
timeout 600
display boot.msg
F1 boot.msg
F2 options.msg
F3 general.msg
F4 param.msg
[Code]....

I've been reading various tutorials of the boot process but still am not clear. I don't care about grub stage 1 and 1.5 at the starting point of when the root filesystem is loaded into VFS(Virtualfilesystem), who is loading it, and from that point on. 1) Does grub load the root filesystem(read only) into VFS?2) Does the kernel load the root filesystem(read only) into VFS?3) Does INIT load the root filesystem(read only) into VFS?after this is concluded....Does INIT or the Kernel create the real root filesystem(rw)...right before the pivot.root

I got this error message when installing Fedora 11 by an installlation DVD (download from [URL]) Unable to read group information from repositories. This is a problem with the generation of your install tree. This error message appeared after the step that the installer asked me to choose where to install boot loader and configure the GRUB boot menu. The error message came with two button: [Retry] and [Exit installer].

I am trying to dual boot Vista and F10 and I have 2 different 400GB hard drives to do it on. On the first HD, I have Vista installed but when I try to install F10 on the second, I get this error message:
Quote: Error: Unable to read group information from repositories. this is a problem with the generation of your install tree. I've looked it up and found some forums but none answer how to "fix" it (if it is indeed something that you fix).

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

I want to create a new process (for which the sleep is just an example) in the while loop:
$ more test
#!/bin/ksh
while read -r line ; do

I want to schedule a Java program to run at a certain time, which will open a GUI progress monitor while it runs, and then terminate when it's done. I can execute it fine from the command line, but I it doesn't seem to work when I schedule it with crontab. In fact, I can't make any gui by scheduling it, not even something like gedit or firefox.
I know it's pretty rare that someone would want to do this, but is there any way to schedule a GUI app?
