Software :: Webpage Access At Specific Times Management Program For Ubuntu?

May 27, 2010

I'm having here at home one quite addicted Farmville & similar game player which I would like to somewhat control in at least late night/early morning hours, Was browsing a while around for a program which could be used as a webpage blocker for several hours (predefined time), but all I came up was either scripts which I don't understand (I myself can be counted as a newbie in Linux stuff) and don't want to risk blindly or just user account time manager (timekpr).

I found a great solution in my case for MacOS users called SelfControl, but as you can guess ... there's no Linux native client for that. So, my question is - is there any easy and understandable way to block specific webpages for a predefined time period (let's say, every morning from 03:00CET - 08:00CET)?

OS: Ubuntu 9.10 Computer knowledge of the farmer: Getting on Farmville and/or playing Gnome's Mahjongg is pretty much all.

General :: Run A Program For A Specific Amount Of Time Starting At A Specific Time?

May 18, 2010

I want to record an internet radio station starting at 2:00am tomorrow morning. The specific program on the radio station lasts until 6:00am. The command I need to run to record the station is: Code:mplayer -ao pcm:file=indie_heat_of_the_night.wav -vc dummy -vo nullI'd use cron, but 1. I'm not sure how to and 2. it seems unnecessarily complicated for something that I only want to run once. If cron is the only/easiest solution, I guess I'll just have to resort to that, but I'd rather not.

But its just need to show only the site files such as index.html and its sub folders.

i think the problem is because of logging in to the server through ftp as normal user,which is created in server. so i think if we login as ftp user we can able to access only the website files.

Ubuntu :: Wallpaper Management Program That Works With Dual Monitors?

May 25, 2010

I've been looking and trying various programs to replace my beloved Wallpaper-Tray on my new Ubuntu 10.04 setup. The problem is, nothing seems to be able to work with my dual monitors like wallpaper-tray did.

Drapes, Wally, Nitrogen, and Wallpapoz are all pretty worthless when it comes to dual monitors. I am looking for something that will stretch my dual-screen wallpaper across both screens like wallpaper-tray did. Drapes comes close by centering a wallpaper in the middle of both screens - but if it can't stretch it across both screens then that's a deal-breaker for me. Not all my dual screen wallpapers are 3840x1200. Also, drapes was giving me errors every time at startup....very annoying.

Or am I just missing something with the programs I've been trying? It's surprising that those programs wouldn't have more options available for dual monitor setups.

Ubuntu :: Second HDD Improve Boot Time And Access Times ?

Jun 26, 2010

I managed to install a second hand 10Gb HDD on my old P4. I want to see how I can use this extra disk to speed up Ubuntu 10.04 if possible.

I installed my swap onto this second drive but since I never use swap I can't see any real improvement. Next, I'm considering the creation of a new partition on that disk that would handle /tmp. Could that improve access times?

Finally, what other tricks could I use with this 2nd HDD to speed things up?

General :: Power Management - Program To Artificially Create CPU Usage?

Jul 27, 2010

Since I own one of those Centrino based Core 2 notebooks that create annoying buzzing noises when idle (= entering C3 or C4 power saving states), I'm looking for a program that creates artificial CPU usage. It should allow me to limit the CPU usage to a certain percentage (I know that there are a lot of easy ways to create 100% usage ;-).

Another option would be to disable the C3 or C4 states, but in newer kernels the sysfs interface to set the max_cstate on-the-fly was removed for some reason, and I don't always want to reboot after switching from AC to battery (and vice versa).

Ubuntu :: Launching A Program From Terminal To A Specific Viewport (Compiz)?

Mar 18, 2011

Anyone know how to launch a program from CLI (command line) to a specific viewport? I start programs all the time from the CLI and there are times when I'm in "typing demon" mode and don't want to touch the mouse. Being able to launch a program to a certain viewport (Compiz, w. effects) would be really helpful at times.

I'm familiar with wmctrl and i can use the -a and -c options to switch to and close windows fine. I only have 1 desktop (9 viewports, though), and wmctrl's support for viewport seems limited at best. Ideally, I'd like to launch a program to a specific viewport, but just being able to move an existing one to a specific viewport would work, too.

Please note: I'm talking about moving apps to viewports AD HOC or DYNAMICALLY, not in a fixed way like I believe devilspie and such (and Compiz' Place plugin). Depending on my task, I need to quickly launch several apps to different viewports, and this VARIES for me a lot. ubuntu 10.04 lts / gnome / compiz w. full effects

Server :: Firefox - Unable To Access VsFTPd Directory. Connection Times Out After Authentication

Apr 13, 2011

Seismicmike here. My first post. I'll try to be as clear and concise as possible. For the sake of this post, I'm going to use as a place holder for my public IP. On my web server, I would like to be able to access the /var/ftp directory through a web browser. I have successfully done so with Google Chrome, but I cannot access the directory in Firefox or IE. Both FF and IE ask me for authentication but then time out attempting to load the directory.

I suspect that there may be something up with switching to passive mode and/or that this issue may be more with my configuration of Firefox and not with the server (seeing as how Chrome works). Another possibility may be related to SSL. When I connect with FileZilla, I have to use the FTP over Explicit SSL/TLS option in order to connect. In any case I still would like to fix it. I would also like to avoid having to install FireFTP if at all possible.

Steps to reproduce (not that you can without my actual IP =J):

* Open Chrome
* Go to
* Enter username
* Enter password

Ubuntu Servers :: Program/Process Route To Specific Network Device?

Jul 30, 2010

Is there a way to bind specific programs to specific network devices (not IPs, since I have dynamic IPs)?

For example, I wish for irssi to route through eth0 and w3m to route through eth1. Keep in mind these devices have dynamic IPs, so I cannot attached them to an IP.

The solution cannot be accomplished through route since route pivots on IPs not devices.

Debian :: Force A Program To Use A Specific Version Of GTK When Compiling

Jul 15, 2010

I decided I was going to compile XChat from source today for "fun." What I ended up doing was spending a few hours getting it to compile, then find out everything didn't work the way I thought it did. I was under the impression that after I ran "sudo make install" I was "upgrading", when in reality I'm just installing a seperate version alongside the old one. Apparently I have to keep the old version so every program that was compiled with it will continue to work, so how do I:

1) Force a program to use a specific version of GTK when compiling.
2) Find where my version of GTK installed to.

I've asked some people and I've just been told to "learn LD_PRELOAD". I've googled and can't figure how I could even apply that to my current problem
