On my debian web server I curently have ImageMagick 6.3.7 08/07/09 Q16 since this is an old version of imagemagick i wanted to upgrade my system that still runs etch, and afterwards upgrade imagemagick. I can not see what version the current lenny imagemagick package has, but I assume it is newer then 6.3.7, no?
When i ugraded I found out that my apt-sources used stable rather than etch. So I already had a mix of lenny and etch I suppose. I then had > cat /etc/debian_version 4.0 Before I upgraded I changed my apt sources from stable to etch, updated the package-tools and did a dist-upgrade (for details, I followed these instructions). After restarting I have still 4.0 as debian version. Also uname -r is 2.6.17. How can I do a correct update?.
Also my services were not started (ftp, ssh, apache2), so I asked my hoster to start the ssh service. This morning everything was up again, but it seems like nobody there have had a look at this. How do I absolutely ensure that my ssh service is start at boot. It is a remote webserver, so I need at least this service to be running.
actually my Debian is still in Etch stable version. What is the best way to migrate to stable lenny version
My understanding was :
replacing Etch links in sources.list with Lenny links perform aptitude update & aptitude safe ugrape.
I try to upgrade Etch to Lenny and get the following problem:
# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
I've a very old server with Debian Etch, and now I need to upgrade to Squeeze. I think it's correct to upgrade first to Lenny, so I followed this link:
Score is -2280

Why is my Xen server (An up-to-date Lenny box) making Xen DomUs as Etch boxes? I run a command such as:
This is 100% replicable. I certainly never asked it to create an Etch VM! I cannot find anything in the docs to change this. And for the record, I did let it finish creating it, and it most definitely made an Etch box.
Just to set the scene, I'm not a Linux expert, but am learning the hard way! I have a 6 server cluster that needs upgrading (this includes quite a few of our own packages), and am currently working on a spare server. Lenny is now installed, and my next problem is that libapache-template-perl doesn't seem to exist in Lenny. So, is there a definitive list of 'replacement' packages, if not what can I do about this one.View 9 Replies View Related
I'm trying to upgrade a Debian Etch box to Lenny. I've opened /etc/apt/sources.list, did a global replace etch->lenny. Then I did "apt-get update" as root. After some activity, I got the following message:
W; GPG error: http://security.debian.org lenny/updates Release: the following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY xxx And then another error of the same nature for the different, FTP site. Then it said I might to run apt-get update to correct that.
<Big Red Flashing Sign that reads, "NEWBIE with two Linux books and very little brain"> I just installed Sarge from a CD onto an old PC and ended up with Debian Linux 3.1, Kernel 2.4.

I did not configure any servers or do any package selections but did manage to get the internet connection working (actually Debian managed that all by itself). I'd like to "upgrade" to Lenny.
Do I need to upgrade to Etch first or can I go straight to Lenny? At what point do I "upgrade" the kernel (before upgrading to Etch/Lenny? After?)
I'm trying to upgrade an etch system to lenny, I've updated my sources list to lenny and ran apt-get update. When I try apt-get install apt
apt-get install apt I get the following:
Reading package lists. Done Building dependency tree. Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies. apt: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.7-1) but 2.3.6.ds1-13etch10+b1 is to be installed Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.2.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages
if I try apt-get install apt libc6, it wants to upgrade a whole heap of packages - will this be a safe thing to do ?
I've been upgrading a bunch of our servers from sarge to etch and then to lenny, on two of these servers, cron has broken, cronjobs will not run. On another two (that have no significant differences from the others) cron is unaffected I created a simple job to run while I was testing
*/1 * * * * root /usr/local/mailtest-1 in the script is echo test mail from busted server | mail -s "test mail from your busted server" [URL]. and that runs fine if I run it manually, I've added it into /etc/crontab and crontab -e but haven't got a single mail from it. The cron service is running
I tried apt-get remove --purge and then a re-install but it doesn't seem to have worked. All the logs have stopped rotating as well so I'm starting to think that maybe it's not a fault with cron but with some other service that it depends on. However, I've not been able to figure out what that might be.
Testing an upgrade Etch>Lenny 5.08, and one issue I've found is that "sudo konqueror" in a teminal no longer gives root priveleges, instead konqueror starts with limited rights. It also seems that using a .desktop shortcut, an attempt to run konqueror under any credentials other than the logged-on user fails.
Yet, 'sudo kwrite' works. Anyone met this before, or know why?
I have just upgraded my Debian 4.0 box to Debian 5.0. The upgrade is ok and the version of debian is 5.0.6.
Webmin, despite all my efforts, is still displaying 4.0 and when I force it to 5.0 manually, it states: "Warning - Your system is actually running Debian Linux version 4.0."
Debian/Lenny: HPLIP installed fine from debian repositories; But when starting hp-toolbox, I get the error:
error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/Photosmart_C4200_series?serial=MY71TCQ11504VP
warning: Device not found
When logged in as root, all is well; logged in as user, above error occurs
i'm new to Debian os and currently want to install php5 apache2 and mysql 5.1. But ive got problem to start the mysql services. The error on command prompt as belows:
I have a nearly 10 years old iMac at home and installed Lenny on (somehow, I had to thrash Mac OS 9.2 :-P). Everything was successful until now, but on entering "startkde", the screen fills withkpersonalizer: cannot connect to X serverlines. Upon looking at other threads here I tried mdetect, installing X11... but to no availView 14 Replies View Related
I'm installing a file server on Lenny (Samba on RAID5, nothing exotic)
First, I installed on a basic SATA drive, to check everything else in the system was recognized correctly. Success.
Then, I added my 3405 Adaptec board, with a 3 drive RAID5, and reinstalled, still on the lone SATA disk.
Install runs ok, shows correctly the 3405 board, detects the logical drive alongside with the SATA drive. Smooth. I install Lenny on the SATA drive, planning to use the RAID5 for later partitioning and data storage. During install, the SATA disk is shown as SCSI-1 and the RAID5 disk as SCSI-2. Again, install completes correctly.
But on reboot and after selecting the default config, the system complains it can't find /dev/sda1!
If I remove the 3405 board, Lenny boots fine.
Is the presence of the Adaptec board and RAID5 drive changing the numbering of the disks, so that the SATA disk is no longer seen as /dev/sda1 ?
my iwlist scan is normal. ethernet connection ok, wirless not working but does seem to receive. wifi radar lists my router ssid. Does this say I have the correct router for my wireless is my question? I am also getting this error message with this system on KDE, LENNY. From KWLAN a wpasupplicant front end.
"you do not have permissions to start pppd or pppd was not found. Dial up networking will not work."
i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).
I have an old compaq pressario (with a compaq cd/dvd player + HP cd writer/Reader) with Debian Etch and a gnome desktop, and I would like to extract the mp3 dvd a friend gave me (He made it from bittorrent). On a XP box the cd is played without problem but I would like to extract and play each song on Etch. I have Sound juicer which works allright for usual audio cd but not with this mp3 thing. I have tried to define a new profile with params I have found on the net for mp3 but up to now without success. I even don't know if it's a problem of hardware being too old, or if I could solved this with the appropriate softwareView 6 Replies View Related
I was able to compile python 2.6.5 on debian 4 etch successfully. The contents of /usr/share/python/python_defaults are now like this:
Typing "python" on terminal now starts the correct version which is 2.6.5.
The next thing I installed wxPython from wxWidgets repository. I followed the instruction explained here:
When installation was about to finish, I got this error:
I am sure something I have missed something before installing wxPython. It seems it's related to "python_defaults", but I am not sure.
There is a "Debian" way to get clamav 0.96 in Debian Etch 4.0 ?
I put volatile repository in my sources.list, but after upgrade I've:
For archiving purposes, I am looking for the different (Gnome, KDE, Xfce) live CD images of the last revision (9) of Etch. I want a copy of them to compare how the system and the desktop environment have evolved in the last couple of years. Actually, I would also like to have live CD images of older releases, but I don't know if they exist.View 5 Replies View Related

I have two ext3 drives recovered from a failed NSLU2 network file server. I need to recover some of the files stored on them, so...I attempted to mount them on my debian ETCH (LV file system), thus:
# mkdir /mnt/usbdrive
# mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive
Instead of seeing the drive content I see my harddrive's GRUB & Kernel partition. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to see the drive's content?
I need to install Etch (not Lenny ) over the internet - but all my mirrors won't even entertain me. Is there a way to still install Etch over the 'net - as opposed to Lenny? I need Etch because of some specific software I am running - and I have to PXE boot (I've used the Etch netboot.tar.gz files).View 6 Replies View Related

I have recently started working on our server. My knowledge about *nix systems is very limited, so I turn to the oh-so-friendly internet community for help. The server is running Debian Etch, postfix, courier and some other stuff. And suddenly out of the blue the emails from the internet are not being received. Emails being sent internally are being received and everyone can browse the internet.Host or domain name not found. Name service error for na$for name=xxx.xxx.xx.xx.list.dsbl.org type=A: Host not found, try again.Does anyone have any experience with something like this? I would love to get this thing fixed.View 6 Replies View Related
I am renting a virtual server which is running Linux Debian Etch. I have access through the root account.
I am very new to virtual servers, and also very new to Debian Etch. I am happy I found this forum when trying to research on the Internet.
The things I need to know are:
- Comes Debian Etch with a GUI (graphical user interface) which I can use on the rented virtual server?
- And if not, I would like to ask the community here if there are any GUIs which I could install to that server, and how?
I want to be able to access the server in a much easier way than to have to type each command. I want to use that server to host domains, as soon as I am more self-confident with Debian Etch.
I need to install some package on a very old box with Debian Etch.
When I type: apt-get update
I get several error:
Where can I find a valid etch repository?
