Ubuntu :: Invalid ELF Header - Libicudata / Launch Software-center And Openoffice?

Dec 29, 2010

I get this error when trying to launch software-center and openoffice (I'm sure more too, this is what I have noticed so far):

This is on a recent install of 10.10 netbook remix, and I then installed xfce.

The library is there:

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Fails To Launch?

Feb 27, 2010

I installed it yesterday. It worked well. I was able to log into windows without any trouble and restart into Ubuntu without a hitch.

This morning I launched Ubuntu as usual vi GRUB. I was asked to install about 135 upgrade files, which went withou an apparent challenges. I then went through the restart and noticed that there was an extra two choices in GRUB, but I just left it to launch Ubuntu automatically. Which it did.

I then messed about with the appearance settings. Noticed a some more updates were waiting which included 49 files. I went through the updating process and restart.
GRUB worked well, and I was soon loggin in with username and password.

The Ubuntu Screen became visible with the flashing horizontal line and about 3 seconds later everything froze. I waited for several minutes - I timed them - but still no progress - everything remained frozen.

I switched off the machine completely, as I knew of no other way to get out of this situation. I rebooted and when GrUB launched I booted into windows 7 with absolutely no problems.

I used restart in windows and then allowed GRUB to boot into Ubuntu. Once more I was able to log in but soon after the Ubuntu Screen appeared and the horizontal line flashed for a few seconds, everything froze. This time I waited five minutes before switching off the machine by disconnecting at the mains.

I am now using windwos 7 to make contact

OpenSUSE Install :: BIOS Message - Fails To Launch From CD

May 16, 2011

Recently, for whatever reason (I am led to suspect a bad hard drive), Windows 7 failed to boot even in safe mode so I decided to just use a clear hard drive and install a far less troublesome OS, so I decided to try to use openSUSE. I used a backup laptop to download and burn the 4.7 GB release. Problem is, I haven't a clue how to get it to work. I thought just placing the burned DVD in when booting would be enough, but the BIOS keeps telling me it fails to launch from CD. Luckily, I had enough foresight to download a live CD just in case. I was able to install from the live CD, and when I checked the DVD, I was able to access all the content.

But I haven't a clue how to use it to upgrade/install all the extra software. Also, I should add I am completely new to this whole thing. While I have used Linux before, for the most part others dealt with all the administrative aspects of ensuring the system actually ran/had the needed software on it. Finally, I have one major restriction placed on this whole issue. I live out in the middle of no-where and the only internet I can get is limited to 200MB a day (I downloaded the CD/DVD elsewhere, but normally don't have a chance to do that). As such, being able to install from the DVD and not needing to download much software would be nice.

Ubuntu :: Netbook Launcher Fails To Launch After Update?

I have done a clean install of Lucid netbook remix on a Dell mini-12 laptop.

Finally managed to get the broadcom wireless driver packages and poulsbo drivers to install correctly and decided to install all the offered updates.

After reboot I get the menu bar at the top but then desktop flashes between white and my background image for ages but does not give me the normal netbook tabs etc.

If I try a restart I get a pop-up saying 'Netbook Launcher is not responding'.

Fedora :: OpenOffice - Fails To Start For One User?

Apr 13, 2010

on the risk of starting another OO thread I would like to share my problem to resolve it... (found this 'challenge' nowhere on the forum) installed openoffice apps on my F11 64-bit box through add/remove software until some time ago everything worked well for all users now with one specific user OO hangs upon startup when opening a file (only displaying splash screen, nothing further). this user is nowhere blocked intentionally

to resolve I did:tried other users, all works well (starting from menu, opening files in Nautilus by double-click) renamed ~/ to ~/ so new prefs are created, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start) copied ~/ from well-run user, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start)

installed gnumeric as an alternative but I like to bring this to a happy enough eyeballs the solution must be out here somewhere

Ubuntu :: (11.04) Radeon 5700 Series : Catalyst Fails To Launch?

Apr 30, 2011

I really don't know what's going on here. I had Ubuntu 10.10 working great, and noticed 11.04 came out. I had been waiting a while and, for some reason, I decided to start with a fresh install rather than an upgrade. So basically here's what I've done so far:

- Installed Ubuntu 11.04 amd64
- Installed Opera, and XSensors
(sensors-detect only detected my GPU and CPU, not mainboard this time. But I can live with that.)
- Activated the FGLRX driver, rebooted.
- Tried to launch Catalyst Control Center, received this error message:
[Initialization error]

There was a problem initializing CCC Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver apropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

Ubuntu :: Guest Session At Login Screen - Fails To Launch GDM

Aug 2, 2011

Basically, the problem is, we have a bunch of computers in a computer lab, that we want to students to access, but not modify in ANY way. That includes backgrounds or whatnot. And after restart, any changes they may have made, change back. Also, they can't have read access to the administrator account on the computer.

This needs to give a permission denied, or something:
cd /home/(admin account username)

The Guest Session is exactly what we are looking for, but try as I might, I can't get it to work. Because, we don't want to have to login as administrators, then activate guest session, just for our students to use the computers. The idea being, we can leave the computers in there, and not worry about the students breaking anything.

One thread I tried was: [URL]. However, using his method, will log the student into the account, and after about 5 seconds, log them back out.
The other method listed lower in the thread,
Seems to work, but upon logging out, fails to launch the gdm

Only way to restore is restarting the computer.

Slackware :: Default Xfce Terminal Launch Fails With Error

Feb 24, 2011

Fresh guest install of current as of changelog dated 16-Feb-2011, in to VirtualBox 4.0.4 (13.1 x86_64 host).

1. About 6 of the icons normally residing in the top half of Settings Manager are missing (names are their and functions work). Selecting 'Appearance -> Icons' and re-selecting the one choice available restores one, the rest remain MIA.

2. Default xfce Terminal launch fails with error <????> Re-selecting the default 'Preferred Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal -> Xfce Terminal' has no effect. 'Properties' shows the usual 'exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator'.

Setting 'Preferred Applications' to 'X Terminal' launches an xterm successfully as expected.

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 Fails To Correctly Import Pps / Ppt Files - Openoffice 3.2.1

Dec 27, 2010

It would appear that novell openoffice on opensuse 11.3 fails to correctly import pps/ppt files. Slide transition data is lost and this results in presentations without sound. This problem does not exist in openoffice from openoffice from will play pps files with sound which will not play with openoffice from Novell. However the version requires JMF.

JMF is old and 32 bit. I have tested openoffice 3.2.1 from with JMF on a 32 bit 11.2 system and it works. I assume that JMF will not work with a 64 bit JRE. I also assume that it would be difficult to get a 32 bit jre to work with a 64 bit openoffice FMJ is an alternative to JMF. It plays various types of audio including mp3 and wav. It is packaged for installation on 11.3. Does anybody know if this works in place of JMF with openoffice from on a 64 bit system?

Ubuntu :: 2530 Konica Printing Fails With OpenOffice And Maverick 10.10

Oct 18, 2010

I have a Konica 2530DL colour laser and have used it with versions from 6.06 onwards.

However now, with 10.10 I find I cannot print at from most apps eg OpenOffice or PDFs. I get errors on video frame showing on the printer but nothing obvious on the PC.

Test print and gedit text prints works fine and so does using a VM with Lucid running on the same host prints fine too from anything.

Can't see any other comments about this problem anywhere but I know the printer is fairly common and has worked well with Linux in the past.

Using it with IP printing on port 9100 and allow the installation to detect and select the driver. Not setup anything clever and I have the same issue with a Lucid upgrade to 10.10 or a clean install. However the VM running Lucid prints fine. Must be something changed on Maverick somewhere.

Ubuntu :: OpenOffice Calc Fails To Include Sheet References In VLOOKUP Formula

Nov 1, 2010

I am trying enter a VLOOKUP formula in Sheet1, where the array is in Sheet2. For both the items, I have used mouse to enter cell references, which I always do.

1. Search criterion has been entered as a range, which is different from previous versions and not a very comfortable situation.

2. array reference completely missed entering Sheet2! in front of A1:C13. Only way out of this is manually entering the sheet name, which is not only cumbersome but also ludicrous. Moreover, we never had to do it like this in the past. I am using 3.2.1 in Ubuntu 10.10.

OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.

Fedora :: KDE Will Not Launch?

Aug 8, 2010

My first distro was kubuntu, and am now trying Fedora with KDE. I was annoyed that the open windows were not shown on the task bar. I tried adjusting all sorts of things, and finally figured out that all I had to do was add a certain widget. I had no idea that this is what I was looking for, since kubuntu already does that by default. But in the process of figuring this out, I caused KDE to crash. The next time booted with Fedora, KDE would not launch. So I logged into a virtual terminal and ran startx. I got the following errors:

error while loading shared libraries: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
startkde: could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Launch Bar And Top Bar Gone?

I have been using ubuntu since 10.04 version and configure with compiz to activate the corners, cube, etc. No problems with that. When I upgraded to 11.04 these things were not working but honestly I did not care that much and was just playing with compiz, so I was playing with an option in compiz about the size of the icons in the new 11.04 launch bar, just when I clicked it my top bar and launch bar are gone and not coming back after rebooting many times. BTW I already uninstalled compiz via terminal and the same problem is happening, maybe important for you to know (alt+f2 or other shortcuts not working except for ctr+alt+t)
