I have heard of a linux based data recovery for hard drives (corrupt) its bootable and once loaded and booted it will scan for drives and show there contents and let you pick and choose which ones you would like to back up/ save to a disk so you can wipe a drive and keep your info but I cannot remember the name of it.
I'm running 10.04 LTS (64 bit) During a recent attempt at dual booting Windows 7, the Windows installer made a boot partition on the wrong drive, formatting the drive, and therefore destroying all my data.
The original partition was NTFS, and the new (unwanted partition) is NTFS.
Is there something in Linux I can do to recover the data that was there, or am I going to have to install Windows on yet another drive and use some Windows tools?
The data on this drive is extraordinarily important, containing ten years of digital photos, my source codes, and musical compositions (protools sessions etc).
I have an hp laptop with 2 hdd slots, both are sata. it came with a 320gb hdd with vista ultimate 64. i added another 320gb hard drive to my laptop and installed kubuntu on the second hard drive. Since vista was my primary hard drive, parts of grub were installed on it i.e. stage 1.5. And the rest was installed on the kubuntu hard drive. Because of that neither os would boot independently of one another.
I eventually got tired of kubuntu and in wanted to uninstall it. I formatted that disk. Now vista gave me grub errors, like I knew it would.I was going to fix the vista boot sector and mbr by running bootrec.exe off of the vista disc. But since I have an hp laptop, hp doesnt provide a recovery disc with just vista, it is an install of the factory image of the os plus software and therefore doesnt have the utilities I need to fix my problem.I ended up navigating to some sort of command line in the windows recovery environment and tried running it there, but no luck.
I tried navigating in the hp recovery environment, and accidently had vista start to reinstall itself on the drive, and actually I did that 3-4 times, each of which I stopped the recovery early on, within 30 seconds, but it had managed to mess up my partition table. I was wondering if there is some utilities in linux/ windows that will help me restore the partitions back the way they should be? I have done a data recovery with get data back for ntfs, and was pretty successful getting some stuff back, figures since the mft was screwed up.
So first of all I want to make an exact clone of the hard drive. Something like dd but just make an image file for now. Since there are no partitions on the drive I dont think I can use partimage, or drive image xml and I wonder if clonezilla will work. And I dont know how to test it without have to reload the image and wiping the drive in the process. I have imaged the drive with get data back but it does me no good cause I cannot restore that image back to the drive, or at least dont think I can.
Second I would like to see if I can recover the partition table , or mft that was over written. Here is a list of programs I can use for imaging or recovering. [URL]Third, since I have 2 320gb hard drives, one that is corrupted, and one that I took kubuntu off of and loaded vista with the recovery disks. Can I take the mbr, and partition table, or boot sector off of the working vista and move it to the broken 320 and fix it that way?
I am student of MCS and working on final project. I am the user of windows xp. I am new in Linux. I am working on a project that titles "Hard disk data Recovery of ext2 and ext3 in linux". In windows, including dos.h and bios.h header files in program of c language I can send interrupt to bios and access most of the devices like parallel port, hard disks etc. But problem is that there is no bios.h and dos.h files in gcc. Now how can I access my hard drive using c program. How can I call int13h interrupt in linux or there is any other function in the linux to access the hard disk. In fact I want to access sectors of my hard disk using c language program. How can I do it?
We have had a hardisk crash in our RAID1 webhosting server running CentOS5 and Plesk. We first realized something was wrong when our main site didn't load but showed MySQL errors. We then found out that the system was in read-only state. Something that also happened the day before yesterday, but we could fix with a FSCK. Then the system worked well til around 18 hours later when it crashed with the same sympoms. So, we rebooted the server and wanted to do a filesystem check again. But the HDD wouldnt even load. It was gone. Unfortunatelly it was not realized that the second disk in the system was also not working any more for some time now. Fortunatelly we had our main site backed up externally though. So we could re-install a fresh box and mounted the two drives to the system. We checked the harddisk. One is practically empty (the older one), the other has almost only files in 'lost + found' but these are all "numbered", no real filenames or so.
My sister-in-law (SIL) has a Western Digital ShareSpace 4TB network access storage that was setup in a RAID 5 configuration (four 1TB hard drives). To make a long story short, a blinking red light on the device and a call to Tier 2 technical support, one of the guys mentioned using Fedora as a way to retrieve the data from the hard drives (seems like the hard drives are good but maybe the actual NAS device crapped out).
I will not have access to the hard drives till this weekend and of course Tier 2 technical support is closed on the weekends. I have almost no Linux knowledge but can follow instructions pretty darn well. I am looking to install Fedora 14 Desktop Edition 64 bit on my desktop sometime tonight or tomorrow. Once I have Fedora installed, how would I mount the hard drives and have Fedora read the RAID 5 array?
I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:
/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?
I have several drives in an LVM VG/LV and for some reason on reboot, a drive will get a corrupt GTP table. I have killed the entire VG and re-created it without the drive that was showing the problem, then then it just happens to another drive. It does not appear to be the same drive each time either. I've confirmed this by using smartctl to check the SN of the drive reporting a corrupted table. It's not always the same drive.
I have swapped around cables to the two controllers to see if I could pin-point which cable or port showed the problem and long story short, there was little consistency in it. This simply does not appear to be caused by any single cable, port, controller, or drive.

When I see that and select Ok, it just shows it again. I can do an mklabel and mkpart, then the LVM LV shows up under /dev as it should, without another vgscan. If I then mount that LV, I can see the data is there and it seems Ok despite the warning of mklabel saying it will destroy the data. Logs show no cause during boot. So, what is causing this? Will doing the mklabel kill the data on it? I just don't understand why Ubuntu is randomly corrupting GTP tables.

i have recently setup and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a virtulal drive usingVMWare 6.04, installed the desktop gui as well, I need to add other drives for data and loggng, which I did in the VMWare side. I can see the 2 drives in ubuntu, but can not access them, I get he unable to mount location when I try. How can resolve this please as I need these to virtual drives to be used as data drives.
I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data
Recently I was forced to hard reset my computer a couple of times (mostly out of frustration) and due to my idiocy i was confronted with the standard Kernel Panic message at bootup. I tried running an fsck from live cd which corrected a bunch of errors but to no avail (as far as getting rid of the Kernel Panic msg). I then tried to mount the filesystem by accessing it from live cd (and later even installed ubuntu on a small leftover partition to get rid of the annoying live cd lag) but it says that I don't have access to my home or root folder. Mounting from command line gave the same issue.
So now to the question. Is there a general procedure to access data in my corrupt filesystem if it is encrypted?
basically the situation I'm in is someone mistakenly expanded an NAS without unmounting the drive on the server. This corrupted the superblock and its apparent that all the backups are no good. The drive in question was expanded from about 800gigs to 1.8TBs, its done via an NAS.
At this point I'm most concerned about getting the files off the drive, I can deal with resetting the file system but I really need those files. This happened within a week of me joining this group so I'm kind of doing damage control here, backups were not taken of this particular drive.
I have a Hard Drive that has a corrupted file system and i have tried the usual MS Windows fixes, chkdsk and a number of recovery tools inc Dos recovery tools and failed.
The Drive is an MS Windows drive with an NTFS file system.
chkdsk scans and after several hours fixing numerous problems eventually gives up and fails to complete.
The directory "My Documents" contains several GB of data and displays that this is true. When trying to access the directory, access is denied because its corrupt. Using Windows and Dos recovery tools i can view the contents of the directory sometimes! but cannot copy out any of the data, the applications return messages saying no can do basically.
I would like to try to use Linux to recover the data.
Problem number one is i have never tried to add a hard drive to an existing Linux system before, how do i go about adding a new drive?
The 2nd problem is, is there a Linux application that i can use to attempt to repair and recover the corrupt data on this drive or more specifically in the "My Documents" directory.
I have recently recovered from an HDD failure on my Drobo. One of the disks died and corrupted the entire array (which is not supposed to happen). I have since managed to copy the data off onto smaller disks and after replacing the failed drive, have copied everything back.
Now that im up and running again, i was wondering how this situation would play out on encrypted disks, or in the case of a drobo a large encrypted partition (as you cannot encrypt the entire array).
Would i still be able to recover the data if i were to encrypt it? It is a 4.2TB array, and i assume that I would need to copy the data in its entirety to recover it, so using multiple smaller disks would be out of the question right?
I have Fedora 14 installed on my main internal drive. I have one Fedora 14 and one Fedora 15 installed on two separate USB drives.When I boot into any of these drives, I can't access any of the other hard drives from the other drivesll I can, but just the boot partitions.Is there any way of mounting the other partitions so I can access the information?---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 AM ----------I guess even an explanation on why I can't view them would be good too.
I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.
Yesterday, my Windows 7 machine managed to somehow destroy a SD card with some pictures on it. Now, every time the card is inserted into a computer running windows, or the camera it came from, it asks to be reformatted. Obviously I would like to recover the pictures from the card.
I tried a scanning the card with a windows program "card recovery" and the program was able to scan the card and find the images on it. But I have to pay $40 to actually copy them from the card to the computer.
So I did some digging and tried to find a way to recover the data for free using my Ubuntu machine.
Some details about my hardware: Running Ubuntu 9.04 SD card: 8Gb SDHC from PNY Optima The camera was a Nikon D5000
What I have done so far: I used ddrescue to create an image of the card. However, at this point, most of the instructions I found only have you try and mount the image. Then I used the testdisk utility and the mmls utility from the SluethKit to try and find a partition on the SD card image that I could mount. Both of these programs failed to identify a partition on the card.
A friend's old Compaq Presario came with Windows XP. However, when it got buggy (without his knowledge or consent), his kids overwrote his OS by installing a warez edition of Windows 7 Ultimate. Unfortunately, that wiped out all his data, including photos of his late wife that he does not have backed up. I want to recover those if possible. I don't want to install anything because that may overwrite the photos if they're still there in some shape or form.
What I'm wondering is if there's a DVD-bootable distro of Linux specifically for data recovery. If I could boot to that, I could run its data recovery utilities without danger of putting anything on the hard drive. Once I've recovered the photos and backed them up to an external hard drive, I'm going to make his PC legal by installing Ubuntu. That's no problem. I'm very up to speed on that. What I need to learn is the best data recovery strategy via some type of bootable Linux. I suspect someone has written such a tool given how often people lose data due to viruses, accidental deletions, formats, etc.
I'm trying to recover my Western Digtal 500GB hd (connected through IDE), I've already succesfully recoverd 80GB with copyr.dma (didn't have a bigger IDE drive laying around). and want to do the rest of the drive with GNU ddrescue. I use the Parted Magic live cd to do this. The problem is that I can't find my HD, although it is listed when I look in the Hardware info app. How can I access it as /dev/hda or /dev/sda or whatever it wants?
While install Ubuntu on an existing xp pro I accidentally formatted my hard disk. Is there any way to get back my files it contains e books pdfs photos music files and movies. Data recovery. My Hard Disk 80GB SCSI NTFS.
My laptop died. I was running FC11. I have taken my harddrive out and connected it to an usb-adaptor and mounted it on my FC11 desktop. However, when I open it all I see is grub. Palimpsest sees both the 250MB of grub and efi etc., and it also sees 120GB of LVM2. I cannot however access any of my data.
A friend has a embedded system (korg recorder) with a ata drive in it, that crashed. We are trying to come up with ways to retrieve the data off of the drive. I'm asking in security as this seems like it would be close to forensics, hence security. Hints on software for linux to help either recover files, move files, copy/clone the drive? I'm not so concerned about the korg's os on the drive, as we can create a new blank drive and install that, its the data that is critical, that needs to be recovered. The original korg os was only recognizing drives up to 100gbs so I'm guessing this might be a fat16 filesystem if that helps. Well, that and the program installed to the drive to run it in the korg is an exe.
