However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.

I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.

Ubuntu :: Disable Compiz On One Monitor In A Two Monitor System

I have persistent video tearing my second monitor (Mitsubushi HDTV). I have tried everything that was suggested with some improvement. I have no issue with tearing if I add the following to my xorg.conf

Quote:

Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Is it possible to disable composite for one monitor only and keep it for the other. Or at lease is it possible to have compiz for one monitor only and disable it for the other.

Ubuntu Installation :: Monitor Preferences - No Values - 11.04 New Install

Apr 28, 2011

I started with a newly built system using an ASUS P8 H67-M LE Series MB, that has Intel's Sandy Bridge

The CPU is an i5

I installed the 64 bit Ubuntu, 11.04

In the Control Center, I go to the Monitor Preferences, and all the settings are grayed out.

Monitor in On is set.

Resolution, Refresh Rate and Rotation are disabled.

If I click the Apply button, I get a pop up window with the message:

The selected configuration for displays could not be applied required virtual size does not fit available size ....

The Detect Monitors button is enabled, but clicking has no effect. No monitors are identified.

How do I get the monitor settings working?

Ubuntu :: Messed Up Colors And Fonts After Changing Monitor Preferences?

Jan 25, 2011

I have this weird problem; When I change the monitor preferences in the 'System > Preferences > Monitors' dialog, the colors and fonts of much of the text on the screen get messed up. The issue is best seen in the attached figure. All applications seems to run as normal, and there is no other trouble than the visual.

It happens in the moment i hit apply. It happens every single time. The desired changes is applied as they should. To turn my PC back to normal I have to restart it, and then it will start again with the new settings without any problems at all.

The problem occurred for the first time yesterday. I think it may have to do with some updates (advised updates through Update Manager) I have done lately (I tend to mindlessly install most updates). Other than that I have no idea what is causing the problem.

Have anybody experienced a similar problem? Does anybody have a clue of what is causing it, and what I can do to solve the problem? PS: I am running Ubuntu 10.10 32bit on a 5 year old Dell Inspiron 630m.

Fedora :: 14 - Overriding Power Management Preferences - Settings Are Set To Never Put The Monitor To Sleep

Nov 17, 2010

I have an odd problem since preupgrading from Fedora 12 to Fedora 14.

My power management settings are set to never put the monitor to sleep, yet after a certain amount of time, lo and behold, the Fedora box has gone blank and I have to enter my user information and password to get back to my gnome session.

In the power management preferences I have "never" selected for both putting the computer or display to sleep.

In the screensaver preferences "Lock Screen After" is *not* checked. (And if I click "advanced" I also note that "Power Management Enabled" is also *not* checked).

I'd just as soon not have to "log on" to this machine every time I'm away from it for a while.

Ubuntu :: Can Run Compiz For Only One Monitor - Intel 945gm

Apr 10, 2011

I've been looking into this issue this whole afternoon, but I couldn't reach a definitive conclusion, so I decided to ask. Sorry if it's been explained somewhere else, I truly didn't manage to find it.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop with Intel 945GM graphics controller. My laptop's screen native resolution is 1280x800. When I'm using only that, compiz runs fine.

When I connect a second screen -- a TV with native resolution of 1360x768 -- it doesn't work because the virtual screen resolution exceeds the maximum 3D texture size [2048x2048].

Lowering the resolution of both screens until the total size is less than 2048x2048 works, but it's really ugly and sacrifices a lot of screen real estate.

My question is: is there any way whatsoever to make compiz run only on my laptop screen and disregard the other one? An even better solution would be to run two instances of compiz, one for each screen, but I'll settle for having it on my laptop screen only, if possible.

Ubuntu :: External Monitor Breaks Compiz, Visual Effects?

Nov 22, 2010

A few days ago, I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 onto a Mac. I dual-installed with Mac OS, and everything appeared to be going very smoothly. until I connected to an external monitor (a video beamer I use in my classroom). This led to:

a) the external monitor apparently being considered the primary monitor, and

b) compiz effects being disabled.

I addressed (a) by modifying the file monitors.xml in [me]/.config. (Before that. I had created a startup entry xrandr --output LVDS1 --primary. That also seemed to work; after changing monitors.xml, however, I disabled that startup entry, as it now appeared redundant to me.) Generally and for all I can tell, my actual computer screen is now correctly identified as the primary monitor -- from the moment I log in, at least. The log-in screen itself, though, appears on the external monitor, or not at all when that monitor is turned off.

This is the content of my monitors.xml file: I have not found any solution for (b): when I physically unplug the external monitor and reboot, compiz will run again; but once I plug in the external monitor, it won't.

General :: Compiz And Desktop Effects On Netbook With External Monitor

Jan 28, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off.

A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB).

In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.

Ubuntu :: KDE / Gnome Keyboard Conflict?

May 6, 2010

Just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04. I use Gedit as my primary text editor. When I was running 9.10, I was able to map shortcuts in Gedit for code snippets and use them without any problems. Now, in 10.04, when I map shortcuts in Gedit, as expected my WIN key is recognized as SUPER (which is how it was in 9.10). But for some reason, KDE now has that key mapped as META. Which means I can set the correct shortcut in Gedit, but can't ever use it because KDE seems to think there is no SUPER key.

I've tried every conceivable option in System Settings > Regional & Language > Keyboard Layout > Advanced > Alt/Win Key Behavior. Nothing works. I've also tried various combinations of enabling/disabling keyboard layouts altogether, and switching keyboard models. No luck so far... What's so mind-boggling is that this all worked flawlessly in 9.10. I must've screwed something up recently, but I have no idea where to look...

I went to the Skype site and changed my password, then I connected via the Skype website, no problem, but with straight Beta. This works fine, but when I exit Skype, I have to re-connect via the website again, the version on my system is unable to connect, apparently due to the presence of the other version.

Ubuntu :: Wierd Opera And PulseAudio Conflict?

Feb 15, 2010

From time to time I have to close Opera in order to regain the ability to use Totem or VLC (perhaps others). I'll explain. Normally everything is fine, but from time to time I will open Movie Player (Totem) and it will attempt to load whatever I have sent to it and it will vanish (crash). I can attempt to send anything to it and the same problem occurs (audio or video; mp3, flac, avi, &c). I can test the same problem with VLC and the same results occur (vanish/crash).

If I close Opera (and optionally restart it), I again can use Totem and VLC. I have tried merely killing Opera's plugin wrapper (thinking it was perhaps related to a plugin seizing PA), but this does nothing for the matter. (Of course killing Opera does as this is more or less the same as closing Opera.)

Ubuntu :: How To Resolve Third-party Ppa Packages Conflict

Aug 15, 2010

I need to install some packages, but it fails because I previously installed gnome-shell testing, and now have the ricotz ppa packages conflicting with the default packages. See error below.

Code:

libgtk2.0-dev:
Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (=2.20.1-0ubuntu2) but 2.20.1-0ubuntu3~10.04~ricotz2 is to be installed
Depends: libpango1.0-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libatk1.0-dev but it is not going to be installed

How do I remove these packages and re-install the default ones, without risking damage to my system?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Conflict With Old Video Card?

Nov 23, 2010

Trying to install from a 10.04.1 Lucid LiveCD. The computer is pretty old but has Windows XP installed on it currently, which runs. (So it can't be that old!) I boot up and press F6 and I get the screen. When i try to install I get the Ubuntu logo with the 5 white/red dots and there is movement. The activity light on the CD drive flashes regularly and chugs along. At a certain point the screen attempts to change resolution or something and it goes all cyan and messed up. I assume that this is at the point where it attempts to load the graphical disk partition utility or whatever. Is there a way to pass a command line option at the install menu to make it a text only install or at a lower resolution? I'm not sure if it's trying to jump to the default IDID (or whatever it's called) resolution of the LCD monitor, since the video card may not support that resolution or something. (Because the video card is much older than the monitor).
