Have anyone tried enabling libvdpau, libva (vaapi) and MPlayer with the proprietary Nvidia driver? Does it actually work on slackware stable/current? (Lower cpu utilization during HD decoding) Is this the correct installation workflow?
I started a thread asking for advice in the hardware forum. I didn't want to post a duplicate thread, but I was unable to get it moved here, so I'm kindly asking you slackers to help me install the aforementioned driver.
I just installed Fedora 11, and am trying to install my video card drivers. I have an Nvidia geforce gtx 260m. So far I have installed both the kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia packages, and I still cannot enable desktop effects. After i installed the akmod package, I sometimes see the nvidia logo for a split second when I log out, but my drivers are still not correctly installed.
I'm having problems with my Nvidia card. X doesn't work after installation (9.10), only command prompt. I've read the instructions at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/nvidia on how to enable Nvidia drivers, but the instructions are only for GUI, which I don't have. Anyone knows how to enable Nvidia drivers from command line ?
I recently followed instructions to enable the nvidia driver. run the following commands:
then rebooted, a tricoloured loading bar appeared and finished, then all i got was a blank screen with flashing cursor. I don't get a prompt to login and can't access my account. I am dual booting on this machine with ubuntu, is there anyway i can restore my fedora partition and enable my nvidia graphics
Can't enable 3d effects on lucid lynx even if restricted nvidia driver (v195.36.24) is installed and activated. Actually 3D effects were working with compiz etc, but at a given moment -not sure if after the final release of the 10.04 - they stopped working, and now it always fails to enable them.
I just installed Fedora 13 and though I'd give kde4.4 a try and see how it is. So far I'm liking it however I've got a couple problems with kde.
First off, I cant enable desktop effects (I don't seem to be only one with the problem, though I havn't found a fix yet).
Secondly, when I mouse-over an item on the panel, a piece of a window on the opposite side of the screen from the panel 'vanishes'. This isn't very easy to explain so I've attached a screenshot. My mouse is over the clock on the top right. I had this bug on an earlier version of kde4 some time ago, hoped it was fixed .
The nvidia drivers are installed (from rpmfusion), working (I can play games and glxinfo reports direct rendering etc) and don't throw any errors - the composite extension is loaded. --- Below are some system specs and details: Vid: GeForce GTX 260M Kernel: 220.127.116.11-124.fc13.x86_64
I've been using Debian mostly for years now. Just got Slackware 13 (Xfce4) all set-up really nice. But I can't seem to "kill" or stop the x server to install the nvidia driver. I downloaded the one I know works for my older gforce4 card from the Nvidia website itself (the 96.43.19 one). In Slackware,..when I hit "Ctrl+Alt+F1,...it doesn't go to the prompt! I've tried everything I can think of in the Terminal,..but I admit, I don't really have a clue what I'm really doing,..and Google isn't really turning up much to go on. I even got the driver started in the terminal,...then it "fussed" at me for not killing x.
my laptop is ASUS U41JF with Intel Core i3-380M and nVIDIA GeForce GT 425M, everything on my Slackware64-current is fine except the video driver.I have tried both ways:1. Packages from Slackbuild(260.19.29)2. Driver from nvidia offical website(260.19.36)Both methods fails because the screen turns black when I set nvidia driver in xorg.conf ans start X. I've been trying to install the driver for my NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 in Slackware 13.1 with no success. I always get the same error report: the module you're trying to build does not match the kernel source or something like that. The result: unable to build module and the installation crashes.
I have tried to:set a custom kernel source path, install it with the slackbuilds driver and kernel, extract the contents and trying to compile it myself, find possibly conflicting drivers or modules, use different versions of the same driver (I've tried installing the versions 256.53, 256.44, 195.36.31 and 173.14.27)recompile the Linux kernel in an attempt to make sure that the tools used to build the kernel were the same used o build the module.
The only time I got a different error message was when I used the slackbuild packages. It built the 'nvidia.ko' module, but it didn't work. I got a version magic notice when booting and, when I tried to start x, a fatal error "no screens were found."
Just to be sure, I made a clean full install of Slackware (only added WICD to be able to download the drivers and ran slackpkg update and upgrade all) and tried again. It didn't work.
I've been trying to figure out the cause of system hangs with slack 13 for a a week or so. I get random total freezes with the keyboard LED's blinking at me and the only solution is to do a hard-reset. I was using a self-compiled 18.104.22.168 kernel on 32bit Slack with similar results, but thought it had more to do with several bad starts as I got used to Slack's way of doing things... eventually I decided I'd made enough bad starts with that installation and after reading a bit about _current fixing some stability issues added another installation to my machine using Slackware64 and upgrading to _current. It worked great, then I installed the NVIDIA proprietary driver. The system hangs are back.
Sometimes they happen quickly, sometimes they take hours, sometimes while I'm working, sometimes when the machine has been idle for hours. For a couple of days I've been going back and forth between the NVIDIA propreitary and the nv driver. I've run memtest86 for 4.5 hours and not a single error, I'm running this on a new HD, I even upgraded the case fan (the old one was starting to complain!).
I've also installed different versions of the driver 185.x.x, 190.42.x. I've used slackbuilds, I've used "sh NVIDA.xxx.RUN" I've said "yes" to everything the installer asked, I've said "no".
So far no hangs with the nv driver. I've been leaving one or the other running at all times and no hangs with the nv driver, but within hours with the proprietary driver.
All that is to say I'm confident the issue is with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, OR something in my kernel options that only shows up when I'm using the NVIDIA driver.
Is anyone else running this successfully?
SLACKWARE64 kernel 2.6.32 (same behavior on 32bit with 22.214.171.124) compiled kernel with "make oldconfig" then "make localmodconfig" BEFORE the NVIDIA driver was installed. ext3 filesystem (same behavior with ext4 on previous installation)
After compiling the 126.96.36.199 kernel and re-installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers, my touchpad has started to act strange; the cursor seems to glide a lot faster, yet more erratic and when I try to hover over an icon the cursor wont stay still, furthermore I lost the ability to 'click' on anything using just touchpad.
I have checked dmesg and Xorg.log for any clues, as well as removed everything with the exception of the card and device section from my xorg.conf. The issue has nothing to do with compiling the new kernel, as it was working perfect until I installed the Nvidia driver.
I'm having an issue where the proprietary nvidia driver seems to crash my system. the weird thing is that it only happens if i have already started an X session. here is what i mean. i don't use a display manager so i invoke X by running startx. now if i run it for the first time it starts no problem. but if i kill X with ctrl-alt-backspace and then try to run startx again it just hangs and the machine completely freezes up. this only happens with the proprietary nvidia driver. if i use the vesa driver it works fine. the open-source nvidia driver doesn't seem to support my card: GeForce GT220. i never had this problem with slackware 13 x86. i have tried using the 190.42 version from slackbuilds.org as well as the latest version from nvidia's site 190.53. aside from this problem it seems to work fine otherwise.
I'm running Slack64 13.1 and I'm in good shape with the 33.4 kernel, but if I upgrade the kernel to 35.x what do I need to do to get it working with my Nvidia 7300GT? I have the nvidia installer, NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.12.run. Do I just do from the stable repo

Upgraded from 13.0 to 13.1 following the instructions. Downloaded latest nvidia package (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.16-pkg1.run) for my geForce4 MX 4000. Compiled and installed new module (old one was 96.43.13).

I just performed a clean install of Kubuntu Lucid earlier this week after deciding it was time to upgrade from Hardy. Pretty much everything worked, until I attempted to install the proprietary NVIDIA driver.
OS details: Kubuntu 10.04 x64 Kernel 184.108.40.206.What happened when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia-current package was simply that it didn't work. I could open the nvidia utility, it would say the driver was not in use. Attempts to force the issue by running nvidia-xconfig would render the X server unable to start, which gave me some quality time in a shell console with APT or restoring the xorg.conf file from backup. Trying to compile and install the driver from nvidia also wasn't working out so well.
I think the issue boiled-down to the install presumably attempting to upgrade the kernel during initial install from CD, but not doing so completely. I had all the appropriate 220.127.116.11 kernel and header packages, but GRUB was apparently still booting to the 18.104.22.168 kernel (which had no headers or anything) and not giving options to boot to the upgraded kernel.
How I fixed this was to remove all packages related to the 22.214.171.124 kernel via APT, then remove all the 126.96.36.199 kernel packages. That second operation triggered the 188.8.131.52 kernel to be reinstalled, and GRUB to be configured correctly to boot to it. At that point, I reinstalled nvidia-current, and it worked. I tried this after determining I was on the 184.108.40.206 kernel, and had no option to boot to the 220.127.116.11 one.
Your mileage may vary. In retrospect, I probably could've fixed it by fixing GRUB to boot to the current kernel. This appears to be a consistent issue, as I reinstalled at one point, just to start over, and went through the same thing again.
I suspect the driver I obtained from the nvidia website and patched (due to issues it has with recent kernels) might work now that I'm booting to the correct kernel with headers, but I think I'll save that for another time since nvidia-current is working great for me at the moment.
I recently reinstalled Debian on my desktop to migrate to 64-bit. Everything was working swimmingly before but I've encountered a bizarre error i have never seen before. After installing the Nvidia driver and rebooting when X comes up it complains it cant find any screens. However, if I kill X and start it again it starts with no issues. I also have an odd message at startup which might be part of the problem as well.I'm running Debian Testing AMD64 with and Nvidia 9800 GTX+. I compiled 18.104.22.168 for the install.
For what its worth the Nvidia module is showing up for lsmod so I don't really know what is wrong. I have tried reinstalling the nvidia driver as well which didn't help. The error message during bootup is:
Now, i had an ATI Radeon x1950 and was using the open-source drivers with Fedora 11 and worked fine apart from maximum resolution was 1024x768. So knowing that Nvidia's Linux support was far superior i shelved out on a new GPU the GeForce 9500GT. I tried "yum install kmod-nvidia" - restarted and then the system loads using the nouveo drivers... So i blacklisted the nouveo drivers and changed the xorg.conf file to use the nvidia driver. Restarted, now its using the vesa driver! Blacklisted the vesa driver and after restarting its still picking up the vesa driver! So... i then head to nvidia's site, download the latest driver from there, shut down X-Server, installed them, restarted..... and still using the blumin vesa drivers!
I use slackware 13.1-current on desktop with 4gb ram, nvidia geforce 210, and AMD cpu. I have problem with my X starting using 40-50 MB of RAM and after some hours suddenly rises up to 400-500 MB. I have tried KDE ( with and without desktop effects ), LXDE, 3 different nvidia drivers ( the one made from the slackbuilds ) but no luck. I decided at last to use the default slackware's driver. I uninstalled the nvidia driver and do startx, but it says code...
I have no idea about GPU and drivers, it was a mistake to install a driver for my nvidia just to have desktop effects. I just want to bring the things back as at the beginning of the systems installation and the default drivers. Do you have any idea how to do it?
I'm new to linux, and i have installed linux slackware 64bit..after a complete setup i downloaded the latest Nvidia proprietary drivers, the binary package from nvidia.com..i have a geforce gts250..it's the first time i encounter this issue..i have already installed the driver with my old monitor (an lg flatron with max 1680x1050)and it always worked fine..with this new monitor (lg w2243s with a res of 1920x1080) it seems that every bin package from nvidia don't recognize the monitor...after installing i find a res of 640x480 and i get stucked, i tried to force it by editing the xorg.conf file..but nothing changes..how can i get the max res with nvidia bin package?
