Slackware :: Error Messages On The Text Console When Runnig Startx

Jun 10, 2010

Slackware 12.0 (GNU/linux kernel 2.6) I am said slackware is very stable (I suppose this means it has few bugs). However, every time I run startx to start the graphical interface, for a brief moment I can see (just before the screen is put in graphical mode) a lot of error messages. How can this be? I use slack 12 a lot and have reinstalled this distro many times. However the described behavior always repeats.

Slackware :: Set Default User And/or Password In Console Login, Automate Startx?

Jun 23, 2010

- is there a way to set the default user in console login so that all needed is to press enter(or event without it) to be able to input the password for that user - also is it possible to console login without password, by just inputting user name and pressing enter how to put startx for that user right on login, so that the user doesn't input the command manually

Slackware :: No Console Messages During Boot?

Jun 23, 2010

I'm running slack64 13.0. At initial boot i see the two penguins and text from th kernel scrolls past until my root partition is mounted where upon all messages stop until the console prompt or KDM pops up. Everything seems to be operating as normal but i've no idea whats happening during the rc scripts (FS checking, etc). When shutting down though the rc.6/rc.0 script messages appear in the console though.

To my knowledge i've not changed anything that would effect this (just modified inittab for runlevel 4 & tty4,5,6 in runlevel 4).

There's nothing in dmesg but most messages don't get logged there as i understand.

Slackware :: 13.1 Text Console Horizontal Alignment?

Feb 16, 2011

I use various hard disks in my computer. When I install a 13.1 disk, the six text consoles <Ctrl-F1> through <Ctrl-F6> are shifted to the left such that the first 2 characters in the line are off my flat panel screen. I use several different disks on this machine and all other disks are properly aligned. change the vga line in /etc/lilo.conf to vga = normal rather than vga = 773. This didn't fix the problem and resulted in another problem. If I adjust my flat panel horizontal adjustment, when I start XWindows, those screens are too far to the right. Is there a way to adjust the horizontal offset only for the consoles?

Slackware :: Can't Change The Console Text On Netbook

Aug 16, 2010

I just installed Slackware 13.1 on my Acer a0531h. My first problem is the size of letters on pure console. It's too small. I tried tweaking lilo but even using 'normal' doesn't change the size of letters. I haven't changed the default font (I think it's called default8x16). The text looks pretty sharp though, so I'm wondering whether this is its native resolution. The text during installation was huge, and quite blurry. I just want to have a text size I can easily read and if possible be sharp. I know I can start X and have whatever font family and size I want, but somehow I feel better using pure console. Just in case it matters, I want to say that eventually I want to have UTF8 support on the command line (so that I can read and write Greek).

Slackware :: Change Base Console Text Color

Sep 5, 2010

I'm interested in changing the console text color. I can change the console color easily in X, but I'd also like to change the color of the text when my computer first boots up (like right after LILO).Is this something I can modify without rebuilding the kernel? If not, does anyone know where in the source I could make a change like this?

Slackware :: User_foo In Text Console Has Not Same Environment As User_foo In GUI Terminal?

Jun 15, 2011

Kernel, slackware 12.0
Xfce 4.4.1

when I open a graphical terminal in the GUI, I appear as being the same user who ran X in order to enter the GUI, say user_foo, as said by whoami. But a program I usually use in a text console as user_foo, gets Command not found here. Furthermore, the name of the dir I am in does not appear in the prompt, whereas it does when in the text console.

I guess this has something to do with enheriting the environment, but don't know wht to do for this to happen. How do I open this GUI terminal? I do so by choosing among one of several ones in the DE main menu. When I click the menu entry, the terminal doesn't ask for a password.

Slackware :: Frequent X Crashes Into Command Line With Error Messages

Nov 26, 2010

I'm having, oddly enough, stability problems on my main slackware desktop. Whenever I try to do certain things, for instance going fullscreen on a flash video, starting regnum online or open arena, it drops out of X into the command line with a few error messages (next time it crashes I'll post the messages). On occasion, it'll do that without any input. Now, there's a few major changes I've had on the desktop since yesterday, chiefly that I've been able to connect it to the net for the first time in a few months. Now because of this, I've been installing plenty of software from slackbuilds, plus flash from adobe (necessary evil). I'm using xfce with some compositing on a geforce Ti 4200 AGP 8x 64Mb with nvidia drivers installed and dual monitors, each now set to 1280x1024 and in twinview, pentium 4 2.8Ghz, 1 GB ram. HDD has a 70GB ext3 slack partition, triple booting with 80GB ext4 ubuntu lucid partition and 40GB ext4 mint isadora.

Slackware :: Failed To Initialize NVIDIA Graphics Device On Startx With Slackware 13.1

Aug 24, 2010

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

Ubuntu :: Can't Send Log Messages To Console.

May 16, 2011

after upgrading to 11.04, natty, I have a problem with rsyslogd.

In previous releases I went to:

and uncommented the lines under comment:

# I like to have messages displayed on the console, but only on a virtual
# console I usually leave idle.

This was redirecting the log messages to a console I could get to via Ctrl-Alt-Fwhatever.

In natty, this no longer works. When I switch to the relevant console I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

The file /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf still exists. A new arrival is also 50-default.conf.ucf-dist which, as far as I can tell is a clone and which I have also modified like 50-default.conf.

The file /etc/rsyslog.conf (configuration file for rsyslogd) exists and its last line reads:

$IncludeConfig /etc/rsyslog.d/*.conf

which presumably should force rsyslogd to read 50-default.conf at startup.

Looking at the running processes I can see that rsyslogd runs.

Any ideas where I am going wrong?

OpenSUSE Install :: Autologin - Syslog - Kernel Messages - Console

May 9, 2010

What i'm trying to accomplish seems rather silly but is needed for my little project here.

I'm using OpenSuSE 11.2 as a media center PC and need it to login automatically(console not X). That one i accomplished without problems.

However, after login i can see all the info about the services that were started and that needs to "go away".

One could do a "clear" in the .bash_rc and or .bash_profile but it will still show the login prompt which i don't want to see either (i don't even want to see the blinking cursor as well).

Question: How do i accomplish that so that the login console shows only the "splash screen" without any output of the kernel,rc.status nor the "issue-file"... just a plain blank screen ?

Slackware :: Init 4 Wont Startx After Upgrade?

Jan 28, 2010

Thing is : I have an Install DVD created from current with the script from AlienBob about two months ago, I use it as my "default" Slackware64 13 install.

I had my drivers working ( KO modules loaded in kernel ) I had to build for Broadcom Wireless and Nvidia GPU. Today I decided to make an upgrade w slackpkg, blacklisted kernel kernel headers, and everything pertaining to it. Still the damn thing installed 2.6.32.x. anyway, ran lilo to take notice of the change, and rebooted. booted allright, only when i Init 4, it failed to startx. new kernel, new mods needed to be loaded, i picked my DVD with drivers, and tried to run the Nvidia proprietary installer...

It uninstalled the previous driver and started compiling a new kernel module..I had the previous DVD installer of Slackware64 Current, as well as my private repo of packages, either built by me with src2pkg or makepkg, or from slackbuilds, I had my /home partition mounted apart, so i regenerated my system in about one hour...
