Slackware :: Upgraded To 13.1 And Can No Longer Login To X

May 25, 2010

I upgraded to 13.1 and can still login with all users via ssh on a headless machine, but now when I try to login to X via XDMCP I just get returned to the login window. I do not have KDE or kdm installed, but rather use xdm. I was having no trouble prior to upgrade and even had an XDMCP session going during the upgrade, but once I logged out I couldn't log back in. I'm not real sure what's going on.

Fedora :: Wine Upgraded - Sound Hardware No Longer Detected

Sep 20, 2010

After upgrading to the latest Wine, I find one of my most prized Win apps no longer works properly (no longer detects sound hardware). Seeing as the previous version (1.2.0-2) of Wine worked fine, I have located its (16) rpm's in the Yum cache, but irrespective of which one I double-click to install, it fails, complaining one of the other packages isn't already installed. Shouldn't the installation-manager automatically detect that these all of these dependent-on-each-other files are present? The 'newest' previous version in the repository is 1.1.38 - really old in other words - and my app works with it but I'd really like to install the newer version in the Yum cache.

Ubuntu :: Upgraded - Dual Boot To Vista No Longer Working

Apr 29, 2010

I upgraded today to 10.04, everything went fine and was working fine. I went to boot back into Vista via grub2. I immediatly get the PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, check cable PXE-M0F Exiting PXE ROM

I first checked my boot order, and lan is very last. Also, through Ubuntu I can view everything on the hard drive so it is not that. I think it may have to do with during the update process, it asked about grub2 update preferences and asked about different drives and such (I am not exactly sure what it was called). I didn't select all of the choices, and I believe this may be the cause, as this was the only thing I had control of that I could have screwed up.

Slackware :: KDE Takes Longer And Longer To Load

Sep 19, 2010

I experience this since kde 4, but it never really was that bad because once in a while on updating kde I also deleted the .kde folder in my home-folder and everything was fast again.

But I haven't done this for a while now and kde take really long to load. Is there any folder to clean up there without deleting the whole .kde-folder and loosing all my settings again?

It takes 20 seconds or more before I see the login dialog box. After selecting the user it takes another 20 seconds before I see the box change to enter the password. This only happens at boot. If I logout and log back in everything is fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded From 8.04 - Lucid: Login Slow?

Sep 28, 2010

Upgraded from Hardy where all worked fast and the only annoying bug was a total freeze every so often. So I thought it would be good to go to the next LTS version and see if it works better. However it is very slow starting up. bootchart reports 2:44 min compared to 40 sec for Hardy and that is only the start-up. Then the real drag begins after you enter your password. It's been up to 30 min!!! before the system became responsive and did not have a solid HDD light.

So my question is where do I start troubleshooting. I'll include the bootchart and dmesg log. What else is needed to tackle this issue? I'm really in a tizzy here, since it's my wives laptop and she is not as patient as I am, to put it mildly. Do I need to downgrade back to Hardy

Slackware :: Upgraded To 13.0 - No Keyboard / Mouse In X

- PS/2 Keyboard works in console terminal
- Neither Mouse nor Keyboard works under kdm or xdm

- You will find that deleting:
(and of course: /etc/rc.d/rc.hald restart)
- will allow hald to start the correct module:
- instead of trying to start a non-existant file:

My theory is that since hald is the same version in 12.2 and 13.0, had believed that the cache file held valid information, when in fact it did not. I did not think to check the modification date before deleting the file.

Slackware :: Upgraded To 13.1 - Temporary Directories Full

I've upgraded to 13.1 from 13.0 but can't startx. I get this error;
'call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?)'

When I ctl-alt-backspace there are numerous messages including these two;
'/usr/bin/kde4-config: symbol lookup error:/user/lib/
undefined symbol: _zn9qlistdatadetach3ev.
startkde: error: could not locate lnusertemp in /usr/bin/startkde: line

Linux 13.0 worked OK right out of the "box" so I don't understand why this version has this problem. Was something changed from 13.0 to 13.1?

Slackware :: Upgraded System From 13.0 To -current Using Slackpkg?

Nov 22, 2010

I recently upgraded my system from 13.0 to -current using slackpkg. However, I did not go through warnings on the web regarding the exact procedure to be followed (first running install-new and then upgrade-all). I just did a upgrade-all and then rebooted the system. And then the system would not boot and gives a related error. Upon googling, I found suggestions as to booting from the install dvd 13.0, installing the old version of e2fsprogs and then reboot and doing the neccessary changes [URL]... Me being a linux newbie, don't know how exactly to do these things. Can anybody direct me with the list of commands/things to be done to solve this issue?

Slackware :: Accidentally Upgraded Kernel-headers - Should Downgrade ?

May 22, 2011

When I first did my install of Slackware 13.37, I installed the kernel from /testing.

I did a "upgradepkg testing/kernel*.t?z"

Well just now I realized that there was a kernel-headers package in /testing, and I've heard that you should only use the kernel headers that glibc was compiled with.

So did I make a mistake installing the kernel-headers from /testing?

And if I revert back to the stock kernel-headers package, will I have to recompile all the programs I've compiled with the headers?

Slackware :: Upgraded WICD - Cannot Connect To Wireless Point

May 24, 2011

I just upgraded to 13.37, and for some reason wicd now cannot connect to my wireless point. It keeps saying the password is wrong, when I know for an absolute fact that it is correct (even changed the password to '1' just to make sure, and no dice. Which is weird because even though its the exact same version of wicd, and not only that, it no longer seems to be able to see networks with my built in card, so having to use a USB card. Anyway, googling turned up very little. Seems to be a common problem across distros, and some people reported that downgrading to 1.6.x fixes it.

So, I ran
removepkg wicd
And it uninstalled wicd. Downloaded wicd- from a 13.0 mirror and did

installpkg wicd-
While in the correct directory. It installed, and I ran wicd. But checking the version number when it loaded, it says its 1.7.0 again.

Not really sure why this happens. I'm assuming there's some remnant of wicd that removepkg doesn't dump, and its preventing me from installing this older version of wicd. What do I need to do for this? If anyone has a surefire way to make 1.7 work again, that would be fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Longer Login After Update?

Feb 28, 2011

I am having a problem with the latest update of lucid ubuntu. I was on 10.04 for the longest time but decided to update while I was out doing errands. When I got back the logon screen was made up of blue and gray windows on a completely black background and the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work!

I found that if I unplugged and then replugged my mouse that I could get it working, but not all the options work properly. When you try to close a menu it just stays up, but it isn't there at the same time. Also, the shutdown/restart options don't work along with the physical power button on my computer, I have to remove the battery and power cord to shut it down.

I am currently dual booting ubuntu and windows 7 on my gateway NV59 laptop.
