Slackware :: Skype Begins To Startup Bombs After Installing Inkscape

May 27, 2011

I'm getting the following errors when I try to start skype:

I installed Skype from the package HERE. Everything was fine, all was stable and rosey, until I installed Inkscape today. I hadn't even noticed it wasn't running until someone got a hold of me and said they were trying to get a hold of me. When I went to fire it up, thinking that I had somehow inadvertently closed it, it sprang right up for just a second and then was gone. Same thing - three times in row. So I tried starting if from the command line and got that error. I can start it from the comman line as root, with the following error:

The deps for Inkscape that I installed, and in the following order, were all from the 13.1 repo, and the ones I didn't already have installed were:

Software :: Fedora 12 And 13 Packages Installed When Installing GNote And Inkscape On Fedora 14?

Dec 23, 2010

I recently upgraded from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 and noticed something strange when I used Yum to install GNote and Inkscape. Yum installed the Fedora 14 version of the programs, but installed some dependencies that were actually from Fedora 12 and 13. The output below shows what packages were installed.

Yum output:

==================================================================================================== ===================================================================
Package Arch Version Repository Size

When I ran the yum command to list all of the packages for the dependencies in question, it only listed the version for Fedora 12 or 13. Is there something wrong with one of my repositories or do these Fedora 14 programs actually use packages from previous versions of Fedora?

Fedora Installation :: Anaconda Bombs During Upgrade?

Jun 10, 2010

I have run preupgrade; the image won't fit on the existing boot sector; so it wants an internet connection, which it has. Then it bombs after it detects the existing installation (Fedora 11), and also detects where the boot record is, which I tell it update. The bug report file generated by anaconda is attached. I would have done this in Bugzilla, but for some reason it will not recognize my login.Critical information:quad x86_64 machine, 8 GB memory, dual boot, two hard drives. hard drive 1 has Linux, hard drive 2 has Vista, the mbr is on hard drive 2.It is possible the unusual configuration is the cause of the problem. I do hope I can get around this, because there is so much stuff installed that it would be a real pain to start from scratch.

Ubuntu :: Installing Skype On 8.04

Apr 16, 2010

Installing Skype on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

I noticed that many people, as well as me, want to install skype on 8.04. I found many tutorials with lots of dependences and terminal commands. So i found a better solution how to install.

1. Go to Skype's download site: Latest 2.1 version - click here

2. Download Static (5th type, little skype cube), i didn't test any others so maybe some of them work

3. Save .tar.bz2 (26,3 MB)

4. Extract

5. Open the folder and run Skype.exe

6. Done, just type your username and password

I'm using this version, i had no problems with chat and calling. Also options and pop-ups work.

Fedora :: Update To Sunbird-1.0-0.17.20090916hg.fc12 Bombs?

Jan 23, 2010

I just finished a few updates this evening (Friday Jan. 22, 2010). Attempting to launch Sunbird from the menu after the updates finished brought nothing. From the command line:

BASH:~/-> sunbird
Cannot find Calender runtime directory. Exiting.
Great, just great.

If you also experience this same scenario, there is a quick fix. As root, load /usr/bin/sunbird into a text editor of your choice. Edit the line:

to read:
I suppose that would be /usr/lib64/ if you're using 64 bit OS.

Whether this was a glitch in the delta rpm rebuild (yum presto) that only might have effected me, or a packaging snafu that's going to catch everyone, I don't know at this time.

Fedora :: Getting Error Message While Installing Skype

I was noticed the below error message when I was installing the SKYPE linux version downloaded from the official web site of SKYPE. Actually I have already installed the QT4 with the highest version correctly even I can used the QT UI for programming now. But still I faced the problem of lack of libraries afterwards.

[root@IT60 LinuxSoftware]# rpm -ivh skype*.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:

Bump: The skype is running fine by the below link. [URL]. This version needn't those QT libraries again? It's strange. In before I was using the version called "skype-" that also downloaded from SKYPE official website. But it's not working as I mentioned above.

Slackware :: Reaching The End Of Endurance Without Skype

Feb 2, 2011

I've just about reached the end of my limits wrt Skype running in a Windows 7 Guest OS on my laptop. I'm still running pure Slackware64 and avoiding multi-lib on it. I've actually never installed Wine before, I guess just because it was so buggy and didn't work very well back in 1994 or so, and I've never looked back or bothered to give it a consideration since. But I also have to fire up VirtualBox if I want to run QuickBooks or the Adobe Suite. So, my choices at this point are:

1.) continue on the same course w/no Skype under Linux

2.) install Wine and hopefully run Dreamweaver, QuickBooks, and Skype

3.) go multi-lib Slackware and then I'll have Skype (Plus a few other things).

So before I embark on setting up Wine.... Would anyone like to weigh in on what you think some of the pros and cons are for me choosing #'s 2 & 3 at this point?

Ubuntu Security :: Prevent Fork Bombs From Bringing The System To Grinding Halt?

Mar 18, 2011

So I am basically just curious about this, but is there a way to prevent fork bombs from bringing the system to grinding halt in Ubuntu, without setting hard limits on the resources available to users? I read about fork bombs on Wikipedia, and being the masochist I am (and not having any unsaved work), I tried entering those 13 characters into terminal. Wow. I have never seen a computer freeze up so fast. What really peaked my curiosity is that the same fork bomb has almost no effect on the performance of Mac OSX (10.6). I know that one can limit the availability of resources to specific users. Is that essentially what Snow Leopard is doing?

Slackware :: Skype Doesn't Use The XFCE Theme?

Feb 28, 2011

I'm new to Slackware (been on *buntu until now, and use Mint at work). And had to learn some things to make the system do what I want to. That was the aim actually, when I decided to install Slackware 13.1 instead of the Win 7 on my new laptop. And here is one of the two things that I have to do now, to make the system completely the same as I want it to be.I use a black theme - Audacious - on my XFCE on Slackware 13.1. And the skype doesn't use the theme. It stays originally light.

(At work I'm with Mint with LXDE, the same theme. Exactly. And the skype uses it. And looks very good ...)So, I tried the options in the skype options menu - General - Choose style. But no option has the desired effect.I plan to uninstall skype and either install it again from slackbuilds, or just download the static (or the dynamic) one from But, if there is something else I can do - I'd prefer this way.PS: There is something curious also - OpenOffice on the Mint distro doesnt' use the theme. But OpenOffice on the laptop use it, and becomes black ... ?? ... I don't know if this tells something, but - I noticed this.

Slackware :: Skype Incoming / Outgoing Audio Dropping Out

Aug 20, 2010

I just started using Skype and I am having a problem with the incoming/outgoing audio dropping out. The videoconference will start normal the connection being perfect. The guys on the other end can see me perfectly and can hear me loud and clear for the first say...10-20 secs but afterwards the outgoing audio from my part is dropping off and they can not hear me anymore. They can still see me. I can still be seen on the other end and typing and the share screen works perfect from my part or from their part but they can not hear me anymore..

Or there are days when it goes the other way round. The incoming sound would be dropping out. I can still be seen and heard on the other end and typing and the share screen works prefect but I am not able to hear them. I am using Slackware 13.1 on a XFCE desktop installed from the official DVD downloaded from the official site and the sound works perfect. I have no problem watching videos and hearing the sound in ..... or any other audio-video streaming sites.

Slackware :: Skype Not Working With Latest Util-linux?

May 19, 2010

I've found that my skype stopped working with recent -current updates ( around beta ... ). It was looking for a library - on checking I found the 64-bit version but no 32-bit version - quite strange as this has been working fine since my original slackware64 13.0 installation. Anyhow, I got the 32-bit util-linux package, did the 32-bit package convert thing and skype is now working:

1. convertpkg-compat32 -i util-linux-ng-2.17.2-i486-1.txz
2. un-archive
3. copy the libuuid lib to /lib and soft-link in /usr/lib

I didn't install the whole compat package as this is not really necessary I think.
