Slackware :: Security Page Been Updated To Include Latest Firefox?

Oct 5, 2010

I'm on the Slackware Security mailing list and I check the Slackware Security Advisory page daily because the mailing list, for me at least, is unreliable. After Firefox nagged me about a security update, I went to one of the FTP mirrors to check for an update and the Firefox update was there, but it still hasn't shown up on the official Slackware Security update page.

Programming :: Include Common Elements On Every Page?

May 16, 2010

I am trying to learn how to include common elements on every page. At first I made the mistake of calling it ssi but I do not think that is correct in php5. I downloaded phpb3 to look at and they are not doing it that way. they do it like this.

Problem is I can not find any articles that explain it. I even looked at the php manual and did not find it. Could someone explain this or point me in the right direction.

Fedora :: Npviewer Segfaults - Firefox Sometimes Shows The Title Of A Page In A Tab But The Page Is Blank

Nov 23, 2009

On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?

Fedora Installation :: How To Keep F13 Updated To Latest Release

Jul 31, 2010

I'm currently running F11 x86 and want to update to F13 x64, so a new drive and fresh install and copy all the config & data from old drive. and Prey, a lot....I'll be installing F13 x64 later this weekend, But F14 will be out in a few months then F15 and so on.I've tried the upgrade option (x86 to x86 in the past) on the install dvd but it doesn't work and I wind up with a broken install and have to do a fresh install after saving most of the import data and config files, but I usually missing something and get hosed. Part of the problem could be using Nvidia drivers for video and several applications installed from several different repos.I've never been able to safely uninstall the Nvidia driver and still have a working system, let alone upgrade to a newer version and still get a visible desktop.

I was thinking that couldn't I just edit a yum file and point it to a new repository and have it upgrade the machine with out all the fuss?I followed a procedure once or twice on how to do a inplace upgrade, but that didn't work either. I'd like to keep the machine running the latest bits, but with all the pain and suffering I need a simpler method to do it. Is there a procedure or process I can run or follow to keep Fedora in sync with the latest release with out having to continuously swap disks, reinstall and copy critical data files?

Slackware :: Get To The Point And Catch Up With Security Firefox

May 10, 2011

I start playing with Slackware and I am amazed about its endless possibilities. There is a security advisory for Firefox and 4.0.1 must be installed. Do I need to compile my own FF 4.0.1 build? Or, instead of inventing the wheel, could Slackware's Firefox 4.0.1 package be pulled from somewhere? if my question sounds naive, just trying to get to the point and catch up with security issues.

Slackware :: VirtualBox 3.1.6 - Kernel Include Directory

May 31, 2010

I tried to build the virtualbox 3.1.6 kernel using the files from and I got this error that says it cannot find the kernel include directory. My current kernel is (slack 13.1).

I tried SOME_VAR=/usr/include --> (I forgot the exact variable name, but I used the variable name I saw in the error message) just a guess , but it didn't work of course.

Is it at /usr/src/linux- or something like that? Or is there anything wrong with the slackbuild script?

Slackware :: Undefined Symbol: Mysql_select_db When Reloading Httpd With INCLUDE

Feb 18, 2011

I have Slackware r13.0 32 bit installed, and I'm interested in getting SNORT installed with Barnyard and BASE to learn about IDS using my own home network. I'm following a guide found here:

I'm having trouble getting past the "create the BASE tables" section. Everything up to that point seems to have been functioning properly. When I attempt to login with my username/password, I get rejected.

The httpd error log reports the following:

[DATE] [error] [client] user snort not found: /frontend

I can manually get into the mysql database with this username/password combination. I've been working on this on and off again for the past few days, and I forgot what led me to the module, but I remember reading some posts elsewhere that pointed to this module. I found the source, and used apxs to compile and install it. However, when I insert the "LoadModule mysql_auth_module modules/" line into the httpd.conf file, I can't restart the httpd service, and I'm given this error:

httpd: Syntax error on line 117 of /etc/httpd/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/modules/ into server: /usr/modules/ undefined symbol: mysql_select_db It seems that the frontend URL on my server is attempting to use php to authenticate to the mysql database. Am I on the right track here? I've seen other posts with similar problems, but they recommend re-installing either mysql or php from the slackware site, but the Slackware package browser site ( is down until a new one is written from scratch.

Ubuntu Installation :: Jaunty 9.04 Updated And Now Firefox Died

Feb 8, 2010

I have Jaunty 9.04 and I was sitting online yesterday and the update manager came up. I let it do its thing as usual, but it seemed to have an issue with some firefox related package (having to do with branding?) and then the little flipping-out icon showed up in my tray saying that a package broke. It did not, and the firefox launcher turned into a missing puzzle brick and clicking it causes a small window to come up with the following message:

XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul
Line Number 31, Column 1:<window id="main-window"
So I might have tried to uninstall firefox from synaptic or something, but this just created more errors and I don't think it worked properly anyway. Inside Synaptic, there is one listed as a "broken" package in the broken filter. It is something to do with Firefox Branding AMD64 and all that goodness.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Lynx Will Not Boot After Firefox Updated

Sep 17, 2010

Problem occurred after attempting to update firefox and configure evolution. Attempted to update firefox last night, it froze, attempted to open the system monitor to end the unresponsive process, and got a message saying the system was unable to support a new process because it couldn't fork. Did a forced reset, and the following now happens upon starting up. After selecting ubuntu (as it's a dual boot system with Windows XP) at the grub loader, blank screen, to this:

mount: mounting dev/disk/by-uuid/5b24d4b5-9b8d-4608-9387-0d92756dcdd8 on root
failed: invalid argument
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory

It will not run recovery mode, and I have no bloody what it means by init=bootarg.

EDIT: Nevermind- I'm going to try the methods listed in [URL], and hope the gods of fsck smile upon my lowly hard drive.
