So I bought a new wireless pci-e adapter today that has a realtek 8192CE chipset. I checked before I bought it and it is supported in the kernel since 2.6.38. Just to be safe I used the kernel-huge-2.6.39-rc4 config file from testing just to get it to work. All the kernel modules are loaded correctly and it is recognized by iwconfig, however wicd acts as if there is no wireless card in the system. I checked dmesg and saw this error.

So I googled around and didn't find much except for somethings about needing firmware. I did make firmware_install but for some reason there is no rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin file. As a test I found an RPM that had the bin file I needed. I converted it to a tgz and ran explodepkg on it to extract the one file I needed. I made a directory /lib/firmware/rtlwifi and dropped the .bin file in and wicd immediately found my networks. So I guess it is a missing firmware issue, however I am currently not able to obtain and ip address. Why did the kernel not build the firmware I need, or is that something I have to download and build separately?
I needed to get a wireless adapter for my desktop PC so I went to newegg and looked around to see what PCI-E cards they had available. I came across a Encore one that uses the realtek 8192CE chipset. I confirmed before I bought it that it is supported in the kernel as of version 2.6.38. I am running Slackware 13.37 and I compiled a new 2.6.39.1 kernel and after I rebooted the kernel I checked lsmod,iwconfig, and ifconfig and confirmed that all the correct modules are loaded and the card is recognized by both iwconfig and ifconfig. At first Wicd acted as if there was no card in the system so I checked dmesg and found that I was missing the firmware for the drivers. I went to the realtek sight and downloaded the drivers from there and got the firmware and copied it to /lib/firmware/rtlwifi and now wicd recognized the card and finds my networks. But whenever I try to connect to my network I get an error saying "Can't obtain IP address". I have googled around and can't find any clues on this. The only thing I have noticed is that the activity LED is not working which leads me to believe the card is either turned off/or not powered on. The light works fine in Windows 7. The network I am connecting also uses WEP. I am having no trouble connecting in Windows so I know the card works.
I am currently running openSUSE 11.4 on my Toshiba A505 laptop. I'm not certain about the exact model number of the wireless adapter but I believe it's made by Realtek. It does not show up in my list of network connections in YaST so I assume I'll need a driver for it.

I've got a new laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-23-generic x86_64 architecture) and with a wireless adapter I can't get to work. The adapter is Realtek RTL8191SEvB:
Just made the jump to Ubuntu, and until this install I considered myself very tech savvy. Now not so much! Built my new desktop, loaded Ubuntu 64 bit no problem. But I'm having a terrible time figuring out how to load the native driver for my realtek wireless adapter. I successfully un-tarred the file, and used the terminal to run the make command by using cd command to navigate to the file. It returned a wall of text, and in my mind looked to work. Next I go to run "./clean" in the same file location in the terminal and it returns:

Not completely sure if this is an issue, I try moving to the next step of instructions issuing the command "insmod 8712u.ko" in the terminal same file location and get the error message insmod: error inserting '8712u.ko': -1 Operation not permitted I've tried running "sudo insmod 8712u.ko" from both that file directory, and from my home file directory. My guess is I'm missing a step or need to be typing these commands in a different file directory in the terminal.
When I first turn it on to the desktop, it automatically connects and disconnects automatically 5 times then sometimes it would disconnect a few times randomly out of the blue.

Well, at first I need to tell that after having big problems (audio, video, modem, network,...) with my venture into slack world at about 7 years ago, I thought that even with my insistence it would be hard to get used with it. Around the middle of December last year I decided to try again and again I had face some problems (now with fdisk and GPT support in a 64 bit machine).
But now, at about a month after that, I need to say that having passed those initial problems with installation, not only I manage to learn a lot about linux in general (dependencies, rc. editing, permissions, groups...) as I am amazing to what Slackware became. From 3D graphics acceleration in KDE (with an easy config for my video card, something I thought it would be impossible and that makes it by far better looking than any Windows Desktop fancy try), to great programs and suites integration like Amarok, OpenOffice, Ktorrent, THE firefox, and so many others all allied with the full control of the system (no automatic updates, no mysterious packages UNLESS I really allow it) not to tell g++, python and so on.
However, besides a raid 0 non readable partition, I am having a persistent problem with my wireless that always mix my pppoe connection when I try to config it via rc.inet1 (or rc.wireless ...).To better explain my situation I have a computer with Asus P5k-e/Wifi-AP with came with an integrated wireless device (Realtek RTL8187L).Also, the way I work out to connect to the internet was through (an ethernet) pppoe connection setup using pppoe-setup.Right now it is working like a charm after pppoe-start and stop commands.
At about a month, when i was starting my first steps to config my machine, I tried to follow [URL] three times, and in two of those I manage to start my wireless, but in all it mixed up with my pppoe connection and since either pppoe-config as pppoe-setup didn't work after that (even after backup the files) I had to reinstall the whole system. (Yes, I know that probably there is an workaround easier via shell or file editing, but since every time I need to restart in the Windows, search for solution on internet, print those I find, restart, and try in slackware again, I decided that reinstalling was the fast solution for me at that time.)Now, I am a bit more confident with my knowledge of the linux and decided to try to setup wireless again.
After an extensive search in the forum, I found out two major solutions: One pointing to alienwiki (with I really think is the best approach besides my previous experience) and other pointing to the proper realtek driver at [URL]As i am yet trying to decide which method use, I download the driver and it came with an strange file (RadioPower.sh) that are called by wlan0up. So I recently installed Slackware 13.1 and now want to get my D-Link DWA-140 to work with it. However I'm quite an amateur at Linux and can't seem to figure out how to. After following many different how-tos and tutorials this is where I am: I got 2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1 (supposedly USB driver)package and rt2870.bin (supposedly firmware) in my root catalog. What I have already done with them:
make & make install in 2010_0709~ blacklisting modules 2x00usb, 2x00lib, 2800usb modprobe rt2870sta copying rt2870.bin to /lib/firmware
Regardless of everything, my adapter still is not active.. and how can I make the OS load the module at startup?
Now, my issue is that I have no access to ethernet in my apartment so I need to rely on wifi for my install. But during the install when it is looking for the network hardware it never sees the TP-Link Dongle and never asks if I wan to load the firmware. I even tried it with the CD image that has the non-free drivers included but it never asks for the drivers. Any other distro, like Linux Mint 7.3, sees the dongle fine.
So is there a way to force load the realtek-firmware drivers during install?
I recently moved out of state and don't have access to the net, however the neighbor of where I am staying is nice enough to let me leech off of her network till I get going. I know next to nothing about slackware and wireless networks since I have never had to mess with it. I have done my reading and have gotten this far.
1) wirelss card is installed and recognized, its a PCI b/g card that uses the ath5 module. The module is loaded and seems to be working.
2) I have heard wicd is easy so I installed it from /extra and it found my essid and accepted the wep password and it says connected at 45% and shows an IP.
however when I launch firefox or try to ping out nothing happens.
after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"
I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.
Out of all the Linux I have tried, this is the only one which will hibernate and startup again properly. But it has no drivers for the rtl2860 wifi adapter. I am thinking of using NDIS wrapper, but it may stop hibernation working. I see a guide which I am going to try to follow, but has anyone out there got this adapter working and hibernation still works?

I'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.
I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.
(For the record, I have already read the other threads. Either they don't work for me or are too difficult.) My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 250. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-28 generic i686) after erasing Windows 7. At first, the usb wireless adapter worked. Then, I restarted the PC because of some updates and it didn't work anymore. In "edit connections" I find "Auto SpeedTouch8350DB" which is the wireless connection (on my sis's computer it works). When it tries to connect, I'm asked the password but it doesn't work.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bits) and a wireless usb adaptor Alfa Network AWUS036H with Chipset Realtek 8187L. After a few minutes connected, the adaptor disconnects and I can't reconnect again. I search this forum but I'm not sure about what to do. Do I need to get and install another driver? I need to use the windows driver?
I`ve got a dual boot of win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. After I put the system to sleep in win7, it was unable to start the ethternet adapter back (Now after system boot, the lights around the ethernet port blink for a few times and then turn off. This repeats in a while). Now it is disabled in ubuntu too. Is there any way to start it again? It is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller.
I recently bought the Alfa AWUS036h which uses the Realtek rtl8187 chipset. I am able to load the module and connect to any network, but its almost as soon as I try to load a page the connection drops. It never stays connected for more than 30 seconds. My other computers using the same adapter in the same spot work fine, unfortunately there not running slackware. I've tried compiling the newest stable kernel and checked the rd.inet1.conf settings.
I installed Slackware 13.1 in a EEE PC 1001px. After the installation I had speaker sound but not using the headphones. Then I ran alsaconf and now I don't have any sound at all!!!
Alsamixer shows the channels: Master - Speaker - PCM - Mic Boost - Mic Boost - Capture.
I have a zyxel dsl (usb) moden, which needs a firmware portion to work, called cxacru-fw.bin.
I have been using this modem using with at least two different slackware distributions, even when the atm drivers were not included in the kernel.
Presently I am using slackware 13.0, with the vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.29.6-smp kernel.
I downlowded the 2.6.34 kernel, because I need it for a new webcam, compiled and installed it, and oops! the modem does not work anymore.
I am pretty sure I have configured the kernel correctly; dmesg tells me the modem is recognized by the kernel, as it is with the previous one, but the firmware is not loaded, because the DSL led remains off.
