Slackware :: Low Battery Alarm Fluxbox

Apr 19, 2010

I'm using fluxbox on my eee pc 1000h and use conky to display % battery charge but (unlike my previous laptop) I don't get a hardware-triggered beep warning me of low battery.I've done a bit of searching but haven't yet found a neat software solution for either a beep or toolbar notification. Any suggestions?(I'm not wanting to switch back to KDE right now.)

Fedora :: Fluxbox Laptop Battery Charge Meter

Jun 24, 2011

I've been tooling around with Fedora with the Fluxbox environment on my old Dell 400SD4 laptop and it works fantastic. I'm still getting a feel for the environment, but one major concern that I had was a battery meter. Being a laptop, it's important to know when I'm almost out of juice. Does anyone have any suggestions for a battery meter for Fluxbox? Preferably one that can be installed through the yum repositories?

Slackware :: KDE Funnies After Ditching Fluxbox?

Feb 17, 2010

So with 13.0 I compiled the fluxter pager and it come back with 'unable to connect to server' when bringing up fluxbox...I noticed that in KDE there is a nice pager that after some playing fits quite well into an enlarged taskbar, and began to set up my application to remember where it is in the pager, and the size/position of windows...Now, I have it set so that only minimised windows show as icons in the remainder of the taskbar, but I have noticed when I start up my app that all the windows show as minimised even though they are not.... when I click through each page of the panner they begin to dissapear and eventually I am just left with a couple that once I click them (even though there already maximised) they dissapear and I am left with a clean taskbar..

After this minising the window works as it should. The process I have spawns new processes, generally one in each pager window, and each process spawns multiple windows within that page window, so I have a lot of minimised stuff to go through! This is compounded by the fact that I have selected to only show minimised windows from that 'screen', which doesnt seem to work, unless of course the panner is still working on one screen, and not taking into account the virtual panner windows...

Slackware :: Which GUI Library Works Best With Fluxbox

I am planning to develop an application that will have a GUI. The first priority is stability and second is performance. Portability and eye candy is not important. To fit these primary requirements the app will be run under and optimized for Fluxbox WM.

What is the best GUI development kit such as Qt, GTK or FLTK that is best fit for such an app? I mean what is the most stable, reliable and fast GUI development library that works best with Fluxbox?

Slackware :: Start Program When Fluxbox Starts?

Apr 25, 2010

I use NetworkManager to handle my net connections and it's applet that allows me to control everything from the gui is called nm-applet. I was able to edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.fluxbox so that nm-applet starts when fluxbox does and away I go. From runlevel 3 that is.

On my laptop I like to boot into runlevel 4 for various reasons. When I start a fluxbox session from runlevel 4 this doesn't happen. What file do I have to edit to get this to start from runlevel 4?

So far I've installed the NetworkManager and the network-manager-pptp plugin along with all the dependencies specified in the slackbuild packages which I downloaded from [URL]. I could use some help configuring the network-manager so that I can launch it as a regular user rather than as root and I want it to come up in the fluxbox toolbar if possible.

Slackware :: Fluxbox + Cairo-compmgr Questions About Transparency?

May 25, 2011

ive used openbox for quite some time, but recently decided to make the switch to fluxbox. i have gotten everything up and running except for true transparency. i have seen screenshots in which this works, but i have not been able to duplicate the results.

in openbox, all i had to do was run cairo-compmgr at startup and my terminals were automatically transparent, and all the window effects i selected with cairo-compmgr were applied when i chose them. in fluxbox, i run cairo-compmgr, it starts up fine, and i know its running because i can use it's transparency settings to set whole windows to alpha (super + mouse scrolling), and the little "tab" buttons that fluxbox has have shadow effects drawn on them. the actual windows, however are not effected by cairo-compmgr running in the slightest. the windows themselves dont have shadows, and my terminals do not use transparency at all. even my xchat notifications have black boxes around them because not transparency is being used.

Slackware :: HD Constantly Spinning When On Battery Power

Dec 27, 2010

I'm running the latest slackware64-current on my Dell laptop (Inspiron 1420). I rarely run it on battery power, so I don't know when this behavior started, but now it seems when I'm on battery power the hard drive likes to spin down and then spin up. This is not after 5 minutes or so of inactivity. This is 30 seconds of inactivity because I'm reading a web page or something. There is a noticable delay in the response of the system as a whole when the drive is having to spin back up. I'm also using xfce-4.6.2 with the xfce power manager. I've checked the settings, and I don't see anything about spinning down the hard drives. I've also looked through some ACPI rules, but I'm coming up empty.

Slackware :: Laptop Isn't Able To Detect The Current Battery State?

May 1, 2011

My linux laptop isn't able to detect the current battery state. I am using slackware64 13.37 xfce with a Toshiba L645 laptop.

This is what I came up with so far.

Code:
lsmod
Module Size Used by
snd_seq_dummy 1479 0
snd_seq_oss 30116 0

[Code].....

I use a program called conky that reports my cpu frequency and most of the time it's always at 0.93GHz instead of 2.53GHz. Sometimes it jumps to 1.20GHz and 2.53GHz but falls back down to 0.93GHz. Is this normal?

Slackware :: Xfce4-power-manager-1.0.1 And No Battery Options

Oct 17, 2010

I noticed that there is a 1.0.1 version of xfce4-power-manager, so I tried it out last night. Note: It requires libxfce4ui >= 4.7. I compiled it using the same SlackBuild script as the one in Slackware 13.1. It compiled and installed just fine. However, when I logged out of XFCE and logged back in, I could only set a few options, and battery options were completely non-existant.

I double-checked, and my user account in in the power group. Has anyone else had a similar problem? In the meantime, I've downgraded back to the 0.8.5 version that Slackware ships with.

Slackware :: KDE 4.6.0 (from Alien Bob's Ktown Repo), Battery Monitor No Longer Works?

Feb 22, 2011

I am running Slackware64 -current. I just upgraded KDE to 4.6.0 from Alien Bob's ktown repo, and upon doing so my battery monitor no longer functions properly. More specifically, the icon will appear in the panel, but when I choose the option to show the charge/discharge state it does not show. The icon only ever shows that the battery is not plugged in to an external power source (showing a plug and a red x). It is important that I get the battery monitor functional once again as I am running my new Slackware64 -current install on a laptop and don't like to be left wondering when my laptop's battery will die and if I need to plug it in.

Debian Hardware :: Lower Laptop Battery Charging State To Prolong Battery Life

Mar 2, 2010

getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactionsŁ and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery. So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.

Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery MaintenanceŁ utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.

I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.

Ubuntu :: Laptop With No Battery - Checking Battery State

How can I disable this check so that the laptop will still boot without a battery fitted?
