Slackware :: KDE Takes Longer And Longer To Load

Sep 19, 2010

I experience this since kde 4, but it never really was that bad because once in a while on updating kde I also deleted the .kde folder in my home-folder and everything was fast again.

But I haven't done this for a while now and kde take really long to load. Is there any folder to clean up there without deleting the whole .kde-folder and loosing all my settings again?

I'm on Ubuntu 10.10, and have tried to update, un-install (and purge), reinstall - same errors. Then I un-installed (purged) and deleted all evolution folders and files (re-installed gnome-panel - it was deleted when I manually removed the evolution files), then reinstalled. same errors.. I've tried to install and un-install through the terminal, synaptic package manager and through the software center, with no luck.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 29: Disk Write Error Then Trying Again Windows Seems To Boot But It Takes Much Longer

Aug 17, 2010

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.

Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.

Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

Since my latest update to Ubuntu Lucid, VLC is no longer working. When starting VLC, I get an impractical dark interface that doesn't response to any command.

Slackware :: Machine's Internal DVD Rw No Longer R's Or W's

May 8, 2010

My machine's internal DVD rw no longer r's or w's. :-) I've successfully used the "boot only" usbboot.img before, installing Slackware 64-bit with an external DVD drive. But with the usbinstall instructions, I do have 2 questions before I begin:Where should the files "INSUSB", "SeTMEDIA.diff", "", "mbr.bin", "rc.usb.diff" be? In my home directory? Or where? And "ms_sys" should be "installpkg"ed from /tmp, or is from /home okay?

And finally: how should "ms_sys" be installed to the USB stick since using "dd if=usbhd.img of=/dev/sd*" would clobber "ms_sys" if it were already installed?I consider myself "moderately" Slack literate...I mostly use my laptop as a document creator, surfboard and a/v player. And while I've used other distros (and FreeBSD) during the last 10 years, Slack continues to be my "one true" os since the 9.0 days.

Slackware :: Wicd No Longer Bringing Up Wlan0?

Jan 15, 2011

I have recently started using this laptop as a host for tinkering with vmware. I have wicd installed on it, which normally brings up wlan0 and connects to the nearest configured wireless lan automatically.

Vmware has installed another, virtual, NIC on the host, called vmnet8. I configured it in /rc.d/rc.inet1.conf with a static IP.

Now when I boot up the laptop vmnet8 starts up and running and correctly configured, but wlan0 doesn't. I have the wicd icon in my systray but it doesn't find a network, even when i click on it and refresh etc. I have to open a terminal and "ifconfig wlan0 up" in order to get the NIC up. Then wicd works fine.

Networking configuration in Slackware looks like a bit of a nightmare frankly (why i usually use wicd!) so I thought i'd ask you chaps before messing about too much.

However, the flash drive does not show.I can manually mount the drive and all is well as root. I can't even tell you when this started. I am using Alien's 4.6 KDE packages with all the deps. I just opened mc and checked everything. HAL is disabled and has been for a long time. Slackware :: Severe Performance Degradation In 13.37 - Taking 2 To 3 Times Longer

Jun 17, 2011

we bought a dual 12-core Opteron machine (Supermicro H8DGi board). Installed Slackware 13.37 and performed some few tests. We observed that performance quickly degraded as the box became loaded. For instance, a lonely task may took "t", but when running 24 of them at the same time (fully loaded box), it may took 2 to 3 times longer. From some test we did (tinkering with BIOS, moving memory modules, etc) we came to the conclusion the problem was due to a terrible memory managment. Finally we solved the problem by recompiling the kernel and taking the .config file from OpenSuse. Thus, there must be something to be tweaked in the standard Slackware .config file

Slackware :: KDE 4.6.0 (from Alien Bob's Ktown Repo), Battery Monitor No Longer Works?

Feb 22, 2011

I am running Slackware64 -current. I just upgraded KDE to 4.6.0 from Alien Bob's ktown repo, and upon doing so my battery monitor no longer functions properly. More specifically, the icon will appear in the panel, but when I choose the option to show the charge/discharge state it does not show. The icon only ever shows that the battery is not plugged in to an external power source (showing a plug and a red x). It is important that I get the battery monitor functional once again as I am running my new Slackware64 -current install on a laptop and don't like to be left wondering when my laptop's battery will die and if I need to plug it in.

Slackware :: Dead Items At - Default Source Tarball Is No Longer Accessible

Oct 6, 2010

Recenlty I installed sbopkg for maintaining slackbuilds scripts and I found it very useful. But there are some limitations coming from outdated repositories for older version of slackware. Eg. a tar ball with Maxima source maxima-18.1.... which is default in the repository for slack 12.2 doesn't exist at this moment. One can find older and newer versions. I understand that maintainers of slackbuild scripts are rather focused on recent slack version. Nevertheless such outdated entries should be somehow marked

in the way that a visitor will know that a default source tarball is no longer accessible. Maybe persons who submit the scripts should be responsible for keeping track for a sources. If that problem won't be solved it is a danger that will play only a role of some addons to the very recent slack release - but if this will be a case then simpler is to build say additional two or three DVD's of packages.

Slackware :: Eth0 No Longer Recognized After Upgrade And ASUS Mobo Replace In -current

Jan 27, 2010

My office has a box which is, by necessity, dual-boot WinXP/Slack. The Slackware I'm running there is -current, all great and fine. Until now... It turned out that my mobo, an ASUS P5KPL-CM, died after a power surge. Since the XP needs software activation, we replaced it for an exact copy of the mobo. After the change the box worked fine in XP, and I was able to connect to the network via the Ethernet interface. BTW, the Slackware version is Slackware-current, updated as of the Jan 9 update (after that I was no longer able to connect to the Net with Slack). However, in Slackware there was a problem: eth0 was no longer recognized. Using /sbin/ifconfig only listed the lo (loopback) interface. The lspci output is:

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
