Slackware :: GIMP Installation Is Failed

Dec 29, 2010

It's sort of a pain to find any support on this because GIMP comes pre-installed. For whatever reason it didn't install properly on install, and being lazy and a newbie, didn't bother to research the initial install's error it produced upon attempting to execute it, and instead found another package and installed it.For whatever reason it's still not loading. If it was any other application I'd probably just search for an alternative, but seeing as this is GIMP there isn't really...(there's Krita but GNOME's my favourite WM and I dislike using KDE applications[I'm quite superficial], and I'd probably be using an image editor a lot so yeah).

Ubuntu Installation :: Gimp - Gimp-help-en - On 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Installing Other Applications And Preforming System Tasks?

Jun 12, 2010

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.

Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)

1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:

2. Then load up the language support application:

3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.

4. Fix'd

I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

Ubuntu :: Default Image Viewer Failed But GIMP Fine

Mar 19, 2011

The default image viewer in 10.10 (eog) has met its match, a ~500MB image of the moon. I just thought it was kind of funny, while browsing the software center for an image viewer that could handle it, I noticed the description of the one installed by default and thought it was kind of funny, so I snapped this screenshot and thought I'd share it with you guys. By the way I have 4 GB of RAM and can view the image just fine in GIMP, just thought this was kind of funny.

Slackware :: Gimp Blocks When Click On Rulers - 13.37

May 12, 2011

I am really happy with my Slackware installation but I encountered a problem using Gimp, I would like to know if it's just me or really the problem can be reproduced by others, here is my problem:

When I open an image or create new one if a click on the rulers and drag the mouse to create a new guide the mouse clicks seems to doesn't work, I cannot move any window but if I choose the toolbox window and press shortcut keys they select the tools, when I change to another workspace and turn back to the gimp's workspace everything works again but I couldn't create a new guide.

I am using XFCE as desktop and the proprietary NVIDIA drivers (just in case it may be a problem). The Gimp error console doesn't show anything.

If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution. This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue.

It said not to contact VideoLAN, but instead the Distro I am. Was there a file I should download in order to fix this? If there is one, where do I place it or run it to stop this error?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Gimp On Upgrade

Jan 28, 2010

I recently upgraded to koala, but gimp no longer functioned after upgrade; i.e. open file popup dialogue freezes, crop tool is non-functional, preferences dialogue was absolutely a blank box. Tried un-install/re-install thru both the new software center and synaptic. Same broken result every time. Tried a direct download from but ran into a lot of dependency stuff I know nothing about; I'm an end user, not a coder. So, how do I get a functioning install of gimp?

The config.log complains that it's missing glib.h.

If aptitude shows libglib2.0-dev installed the pc file must exist somewhere.. how to verify that libglib2.0-dev is installed correctly?

Fedora Installation :: FED13 Kickstart - Client Failed - Loader Failed To Mount

Jun 27, 2010

I have configured the remote installation of Fedora 13 with kickstart with nfs installation method. All work ok until I boot the Fedora 13 client system.

Fed13 client system receives the IP address from dhcp, receives the loader, loads vmlinuz and initrd.img from tftp, load anaconda, configures the network and dev eth0, mounts nfs server to load kickstart file, loads kickstart file (language...) but when it tries to mount nfs server to install from Fedora 13 installation tree it fails.

First, I thought that I had an error on my NFS configuration but I was wrong. I opened tty with ALT+F4 on the Fedora 13 client and I sew this error:

Is this a bug or can I modify anything to correct this error? How?

Slackware :: KVM - VM Entry Failed With Error

Feb 2, 2011

I have a new server with AMD Opteron (first time, other server has intel) and slackware 13.1 32 bit installed.

kvm (qemu-system-x86_64) did not start with this error:
kvm: vm entry failed with error 0xffffffff
kvm_run returned -22

Got new kernel from slackcurrent ( and rebuild qemu tools (qemu-kvm from SlackBuild).

Now kvm starts but I have another issue:
The virtual machine (I take a working image from another server) starts, shows the initial lilo message, "Loading linux ....", "BIOS data check succesfull ..." and then hungs with a black screen.

The command line is:
/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -hda /tmp/elezioni-ter.qcow2 -m 512 -localtime -k it -vnc
If I add the '-no-kvm' at the command line the vm boots ok.

Slackware :: Can't Ssh Into Slack 13.37 'Host Key Verification Failed'

Jul 14, 2011

I have Slack 64 bit installed on my desktop, sshd is running. From my netbook running Ubuntu I can not connect through ssh, I always get 'Host key verification failed' message. I have tried a lot of things, I got to a point where I could not ssh either way. So today I removed and re-installed Openssh on both systems. I made sure I was using the new ssh_config and sshd_config files on both systems. Right now I can ssh from the desktop ( Slack ) to Ubuntu ( netbook ) but not the other way around. I do not get a known_hosts file created on Slack, I do get one on Ubuntu. I don't understand why Openssh server on Slack is not accessible, and why the known_hosts file is not getting created.

is what I have installed. Most of the suggestions I have found suggest deleting the entry for the remote host. Problem is it never gets created. How do I go about fixing this? This is a link to the last howto I followed, after the re-install of Openssh. [URL]...

Slackware :: Kernel 2.6.33 Failed To Boot (Cannot Remount Read-only Fs)

Mar 7, 2010

I tried to compile a 2.6.33 kernel following Alien's guide.

I pretty much used the default values for every (NEW) option avaiable. I used "make localmodconfig" on my current config (zcat /proc/config.gz) and then tried to use "make menuconfig" to check if I could change anything. I didn't understand most of the options, so I skipped it. Then I used "make bzImage modules" and "make modules_install", copied the files mentioned on the wiki and run lilo.

But when I try to boot using my custom kernel, it gives an error like "Cannot remount read-only filesystem as read-write! This can cause serious problems."

If I try to continue the boot, it hangs when trying to launch the syslog script...

The new kernel entry on lilo.conf is:

image = /boot/vmlinuz-custom-2.6.33
root = /dev/sda4
label = newkernel
just like the default kernel entry.

By the way, one thing I changed is the kernel compression format, which I set LZMA. But it didn't seem to be the problem, since it at least started...

Slackware :: Turn Off Or Reboot Machine By Command Failed

Nov 4, 2010

I am using Slackware 13.1 on my Asus K40IN, I also use dual boot by LILO with Windows XP. In Windows XP I can reboot or shutdown by select Start -> Turn off Computer, or just physically push the power button, then the machine will shutdown. In my Slackware 13.1, I can physically push the power button, the machine show that it is switching to run level 0, and then it will power off. However, I can not turn it off or restart my machine by the command (run "halt" or "reboot" as root), it show identical things like when I physically push button, but when it turn to status "Restarting machine" or "Turning off machine", my computer hang there, it does not power off machine or restart it. Is there any one experienced this situation? What should I do to fix it?

Slackware :: Install Xen Failed - Virt-manager Allow To Create Xen VMs Or Just KVM VMs?

Mar 8, 2011

I've been using KVM with great results on Slackware but one thing about Xen 4 that appeals to me is VGA and PCI passthru. I did try to install the Xen Slackbuild some time ago but failed. I'm afraid I can't remember why now. As far as I remember the Slackbuild was just out a day or so, so perhaps there were unresolved issues in the early days. How is Xen now? Does it run as well as KVM, for HVM as well as PV guests? Does virt-manager allow you to create Xen VMs or just KVM VMs? I'm very happy with KVM on Slackware (and Xen on NetBSD) but as I say, the Xen 4 release has some enticing features which pretty much do away with dual- and multi-booting. Full-throttle graphics in a VM?

Slackware :: /dev/root Mounting & Booting Into The Generic Kernel Failed?

Jul 4, 2011

I just did a full install of Slackware64 on my netbook. Everything was sweet until I tried switching to the generic kernel. Even before this, I noticed when I ran the mount command it listed not sda3, which really is the root partition, but /dev/root as the root partition. This also appears in mtab, but not fstab. So yeah, here are the errors when I try booting into the generic kernel:

Code: mounting /dev/sda3 on /mnt failed: No such device No /sbin/init found on rootdev (or not mounted) bin/sh: cant access tty: job control turned off

I've tried rebuilding the script several times, as well as lilo.conf. But no success I've looked at some similar old threadss here but most of them are related to slackware 12 and older, so I don't know if these issues are related or not.
